Sturisomatichthys citurensis is a large, graceful whiptail catfish endemic to Panama, where it inhabits the clear, fast-flowing rivers of the Tuira and Bayano basins on the Pacific slope. Described from the Río Cupe at Cituro over a century ago, it is the only Sturisomatichthys species native to Central America and sits at the northern edge of a genus that otherwise radiates through the Andes and trans-Andean lowlands of Colombia and Venezuela. Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, its restricted range and a single major hydroelectric impoundment on its primary river make it a species of genuine concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Sturisomatichthys citurensis was first described as Oxyloricaria citurensis by Seth Eugene Meek and Samuel Frederick Hildebrand in 1913, in their monographic survey of Panamanian ichthyofauna (Field Museum of Natural History, Publications, Zoological Series, vol. 10, no. 8). The type locality is the Río Cupe at Cituro, Panama — a tributary of the Tuira drainage on the Pacific slope of eastern Panama.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Sturisomatichthys citurensis (Meek & Hildebrand, 1913). The synonym history includes Acanthicus citurensis, Oxyloricaria citurensis (the original combination), and Sturisoma citurense — the last reflecting a former practice of placing these fish in Sturisoma before the two genera were formally distinguished. The placement of this species in Sturisomatichthys rather than Sturisoma rests on a cluster of morphological characters: abdominal plates that are less organised (not in three clearly defined longitudinal series), dark spots typically present on one or more fins (dorsal, pectoral, pelvic, or anal), and 15–18 lateral plates in the median series rather than the 20–21 of Sturisoma. The geographic rule of thumb — that Sturisoma are cis-Andean (east of the Andes) while most Sturisomatichthys are trans-Andean — also applies, with this Panamanian species sitting trans-Andean on the Pacific slope (PlanetCatfish). Armbruster's 2004 phylogenetic analysis of Loricariidae placed Sturisomatichthys within subfamily Loricariinae.

Morphology

Sturisomatichthys citurensis is a large loricariid, reaching 10 in standard length (SL), making it one of the bigger members of its genus. The body plan is immediately recognisable as a 'royal whiptail': extremely elongated and depressed, with a prominent pointed snout, a single dorsal fin set high on the body, large pectoral fins armed with strong odontodes, and a long, tapering caudal peduncle that terminates in a filamentous extension on the upper and lower caudal fin rays in mature fish. The body is encased in keeled bony scutes in Loricariinae fashion.

Coloration is typically tan to sandy brown with a pattern of darker saddles or a reticulated network; dark spots are present on one or more fins, a diagnostic character for the genus. The ventral surface is paler. Sexual dimorphism follows the Sturisomatichthys pattern: males develop pronounced odontodes along the leading edge of the pectoral fin spine and on the snout, and the caudal filaments are typically longer in mature males. Females become visibly wider in the body when carrying ripe eggs. The genus is facultatively air-breathing (FishBase ref. 126274), confirmed for the broader genus group.

Habitat

Sturisomatichthys citurensis is endemic to Panama, where it occurs in two river systems on the Pacific slope of eastern Panama: the Tuira basin (which includes the Río Cupe type locality) and the Bayano basin (also known as the Chepo/Upper Chepo system). FishBase lists distribution as 'Central America: Tuira and Bayano River basins.' IUCN notes claims of the species from Colombia, but these remain uncertain.

Both the Tuira and the Bayano drain the Darién and Chucunaque highlands — a geologically complex zone at the junction of South and Central America. The rivers are characterised by clear to slightly turbid water, rocky and cobble substrates in riffles and rapids, and seasonal variation in flow driven by the pronounced wet/dry seasons of Pacific Panama. Water temperatures in these lowland and foothill rivers are warm tropical, typically 75–82 °F. As a Loricariinae whiptail, S. citurensis occupies the hard-substrate sections — boulders, ledges, and bedrock outcrops — where current is strongest and algal growth on rock surfaces is richest. The Bayano River was impounded in 1976 to form the Bayano Reservoir, substantially altering the hydrology of the lower basin and fragmenting the species' accessible habitat.

Feeding

Sturisomatichthys citurensis, like its relatives, is primarily an aufwuchs grazer. The ventral suction disc and the bicuspid scraping teeth are adapted to rasping periphyton — the film of diatoms, cyanobacteria, small green algae, and associated invertebrates that coats hard substrates in fast-moving water. At 10 in SL, this is a large grazer capable of processing significant biofilm surfaces across its body range.

In captivity, the dietary requirements replicate those of its well-studied congener Sturisomatichthys leightoni (the Colombian royal whiptail, a far more commonly kept species). Algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking foods form the core diet. Blanched vegetables — courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, peas — are accepted and beneficial. Soft, fine-leafed plants may be nibbled and are best avoided; robust Anubias or Java fern attached to rock are suitable aquarium plants. Some protein supplementation (sinking pellets, occasional frozen foods) is acceptable but should not dominate. An established algal growth on tank surfaces and rocks is the most valuable food source for long-term health.

Mating

No detailed account of courtship behaviour in S. citurensis specifically has been published. Inference from the genus pattern — particularly from observations of the closely related S. leightoni, S. festivus, and S. aureus (the last being the most frequently bred Sturisomatichthys in captivity) — provides the best available model.

Males of Sturisomatichthys develop prominent pectoral odontodes and snout odontodes as breeding condition improves, and territorial display around spawning sites (typically exposed rock faces or wide, flat substrates in moderate current) has been documented for congeners. The male guards and fans the egg mass after spawning, with the female departing. Gravid females broaden conspicuously in the midsection. No courtship or mating observation specific to S. citurensis has been published, and the species has no known captive breeding record on PlanetCatfish.

Breeding

Sturisomatichthys species, unlike many loricariids, are open substrate spawners rather than cave spawners. The eggs are deposited directly on rock faces, the underside of flat stones, or other open hard surfaces in moderate to fast current, and the male guards the clutch in place — fanning the eggs and keeping them free of fungus. This open-water paternal care strategy is consistent with the fast-flowing habitats these fish occupy, where cave sites may be scarce or impractical.

For S. citurensis, no clutch size, incubation period, or fry development data have been documented in the literature or hobbyist records. By analogy with S. aureus and S. leightoni, clutches of several dozen to low hundreds of eggs (30–150 is the genus range in documented breeders) might be expected, with incubation of roughly five to ten days at tropical temperatures. Fry are large relative to many loricariids and begin feeding almost immediately. Conditioning adults on a diverse, high-quality diet including spirulina and fresh vegetables, combined with increased water changes and slight temperature variation mimicking wet-season onset, represents the best approach for inducing spawning attempts.

In the aquarium

Sturisomatichthys citurensis is essentially unknown in the hobby. PlanetCatfish records no registered keeper, no wish-list entry, and no spotting for the species — an extraordinary absence that reflects both its Panamanian endemism and its Near Threatened status under IUCN criteria. Wild collection from the Tuira and Bayano systems is legally constrained by Panamanian environmental regulations, and no captive-bred stock exists in the trade.

If specimens were ever obtained, care requirements would resemble those of related whiptail plecos adapted to fast, warm tropical water. A large aquarium — at least 55 US gal for a single adult — is required for a 10 in fish. Strong filtration, good surface agitation, and regular water changes maintaining excellent water quality are essential. Temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.8–7.5, moderately soft to moderately hard water. The tank should be furnished with large smooth boulders, slate, and wood, oriented to create zones of faster and slower current. Algal growth on hard surfaces is the key dietary requirement and cannot be substituted entirely by commercial foods.

This species is best treated as one to observe on the rare occasions it surfaces in zoological or specialist collections, rather than a current hobbyist target. Any specimen that does enter the trade should be assumed wild-caught and handled accordingly.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisomatichthys citurensis as Near Threatened (NT; criterion B1ab(iii)) in an assessment dated 19 December 2019 (Lyons 2020). The assessment identifies ongoing decline in the quality of its freshwater habitat as the primary concern. The species' extent of occurrence is restricted to two river systems in eastern Panama, and the Bayano River — one of the two drainages — was dammed in 1976 to create the Bayano hydroelectric reservoir, fragmenting the available habitat in that system. Continued habitat modification through deforestation and changes in river hydrology associated with land-use change in the Darién region pose additional threats.

The Tuira basin, which drains the Darién National Park and Biosphere Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), offers some of the best remaining habitat protection for this species. The IUCN record notes uncertain reports from Colombia; if confirmed, these would expand the known range and might influence the threat assessment. No targeted conservation programme, captive assurance colony, or systematic monitoring programme for this species is documented. Given the combination of a very restricted range, specialist riverine habitat requirements, and documented habitat decline, the current Near Threatened category may understate the species' vulnerability if Panamanian freshwater habitats continue to degrade.
