Taxonomy & naming
Sturisomatichthys kneri was formally described by Ghazzi in 2005, published in Copeia (volume 2005, number 3, pages 559–565), under the name Sturisoma kneri. The species name honoured the nineteenth-century Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner (1810–1869), who made foundational contributions to the study of South American catfishes. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Sturisomatichthys, which is now the accepted generic placement.
The nomenclatural history includes an old combination, Loricaria kneri Steindachner, 1878, but this was never formally diagnosed as a distinct species in that genus; Ghazzi's 2005 paper provided the first valid description, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Sturisomatichthys kneri (Ghazzi, 2005) as the valid name.
Sturisomatichthys is separated from the superficially similar genus Sturisoma by several structural characters: central abdominal plates in Sturisomatichthys are not arranged in clearly defined longitudinal series; dark spots are usually present on the dorsal, pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins; and the midventral plate series is shorter (15–18 plates versus 20–21 in Sturisoma). A further biogeographic correlate holds broadly across the two genera: Sturisomatichthys species are predominantly trans-Andean (draining west of or through the Andes), while all Sturisoma are cis-Andean. Lago Maracaibo, lying in the Maracaibo lowlands between the Venezuelan Andes and the Sierra de Perijá, falls within the trans-Andean zone.
The genus name combines the German Sturio (sturgeon) with the Greek soma (body) and ichthys (fish), evoking the sturgeon-like elongated profile of these whiptail catfish.
Morphology
Sturisomatichthys kneri is a large whiptail, reaching up to 9.5 in standard length (SL) — making it one of the larger species in the genus. The body follows the strongly depressed, elongated loricariine plan, tapering posteriorly to an extended caudal filament.
The formal diagnosis by Ghazzi (2005) identifies several morphological characters that distinguish S. kneri from all other Sturisomatichthys: a greater interorbital width (7.4–8.0% of standard length, versus 4.5–6.2% in congeners); little or no frontal contribution to the orbital rim; absence of ventral expansion of the sphenotic; and 18 (versus 20–22) plates in the midventral plate series, with keels on these plates not coalesced. These are osteological and plate-count characters that require examination of specimens to assess reliably.
As with other Loricariinae, mature males would be expected to develop hypertrophied odontodes on the head, pectoral-fin spine, and cheeks as secondary sexual characters, though species-specific breeding dimorphism has not been documented in the literature for this taxon.
Habitat
The known range of Sturisomatichthys kneri is restricted to the Lago Maracaibo drainage of Venezuela. Lago Maracaibo is a large, ancient brackish-influenced lake in northwestern Venezuela, connected to the Golfo de Venezuela by a natural strait and fed by numerous rivers draining the surrounding Andes foothills and the Sierra de Perijá. It supports a notable endemic fish fauna shaped by its long isolation.
No specific microhabitat data for S. kneri are recorded in the literature accessible via the cache. As a large benthic loricariid in a lake-and-river system, it would be expected to occupy slower-flowing or lacustrine margins with appropriate substrate — sandy or silty bottoms in shallow to moderate depths. Feeding

By analogy with the broader Loricariinae, males in the genus would be expected to show territorial behaviour around spawning sites and to develop more pronounced odontode ornamentation when reproductively active. The degree to which S. kneri shows these traits in the wild is undocumented.

Its restricted distribution in the Lago Maracaibo drainage — a region not typically targeted by ornamental fish collectors — and its apparent rarity in collections suggest that wild specimens rarely if ever enter the trade.
For aquarists who may encounter specimens from scientific or specialty sources, general Sturisomatichthys husbandry principles would apply: large tank to accommodate the substantial adult size (approaching 9.5 in SL), fine or mixed substrate, excellent oxygenation and water quality, and a diet based on algae wafers, biofilm grazing, and supplementary blanched vegetables. No water parameter data specific to this species are available to guide conditions with precision.
Conservation
Sturisomatichthys kneri was assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern on 5 June 2017 (IUCN ID: 118044689). The assessment acknowledges the species' restricted range within the Lago Maracaibo drainage.
Lago Maracaibo and its tributary rivers face well-documented pressures from petroleum extraction (the lake basin sits above one of South America's largest oil reserves), agricultural runoff, and urban waste from surrounding cities including Maracaibo itself. Water quality in the lake and its inflows has been periodically affected by these activities. The extent to which these pressures affect S. kneri specifically is not documented, and the 2017 IUCN assessment did not elevate the species above Least Concern.
