Taxonomy & naming
Sturisomatichthys tamanae was originally described by C. Tate Regan in 1912 in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (volume 1912, part 3, article 36, p. 669), from specimens collected at the Río Tamana in the Río San Juan system, Chocó Department, south-western Colombia. The original combination was Oxyloricaria tamanae; the current combination Sturisomatichthys tamanae is validated by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). Sturisoma tamanae is an additional synonym that appears in older literature.
The genus Sturisomatichthys was established by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1979 and was comprehensively revised by Londoño-Burbano and Reis (2019, Copeia 107: 792), who examined type and non-type material of all valid species and confirmed the placement of tamanae. A key finding of that revision, supported by the molecular phylogeny of Covain et al. (2016, Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 94: 492), is that Sturisomatichthys is strictly trans-Andean — occurring west of the Andes — while the sister genus Sturisoma is entirely cis-Andean, occurring in the Amazon and Orinoco basins to the east. This geographic split largely supplants the older criterion of snout length for separating the two genera.
Within Loricariidae, Sturisomatichthys belongs to the tribe Harttiini of subfamily Loricariinae (Armbruster 2004). The species carries no hobbyist L-number or LDA code.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 8.5–9 in standard length (SL), corresponding to around 9.5–10.5 in total length (TL) with filaments. Suedamerikafans document a maximum standard length of 9.5 in. The body is slender and strongly depressed, with a pointed snout extending well in front of the mouth — the classic whiptail silhouette of the Harttiini. The upper caudal fin lobe carries a pronounced filamentous extension; the lower lobe is also elongated in adult males.
Body coloration is a medium tan to golden-brown, overlaid with a fine dark reticulate or speckled pattern across the dorsum and flanks. The snout and rostral region often carry a slightly darker wash. The ventral surface is paler, sometimes cream-coloured. Dark spots are typically present on the dorsal, pectoral, and other fins — a diagnostic character distinguishing Sturisomatichthys from Sturisoma, whose fins (other than sometimes the pectorals) lack dark spotting.
The abdominal plates of Sturisomatichthys are less organized than in Sturisoma — they are not arranged in three clearly defined longitudinal series — and the median lateral plate count of 15–18 is lower than the 20–21 of Sturisoma. The pectoral spine carries odontodes that become more elaborate in breeding males. Mature males also develop stiff bristles (odontodes) on the sides of the head (cheeks and rostrum) and along the base of the pectoral spine — features absent in females. Females are broader-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Sturisomatichthys tamanae is endemic to Colombia, occurring in the San Juan River basin (Pacific drainage) and the Atrato River basin (Caribbean drainage), with additional records from the Baudó River. The type locality — Río Tamana — is a tributary of the lower San Juan in Chocó Department, at approximately 5°N, 76.7°W, at roughly 197 ft above sea level (Welsfans database). The San Juan is a short, fast-dropping river of the Chocó bioregion, one of the wettest terrestrial environments on Earth, fed by intense Pacific rainfall year-round.
In the field, this species and its congeners occupy clear, fast-flowing stretches with rocky or gravelly substrate. The Chocó's rivers are generally soft and slightly acidic to neutral — conditions driven by the high rainfall and minimal mineral weathering of the coastal mountains. Published water parameter recommendations for the species (Scotcat; Welsfans) converge on 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and well-oxygenated water with measurable current. The fish is commonly found pressed against rock faces or among root tangles in moderate to swift current, where it grazes periphyton and biofilm.
Feeding
Like other Harttiini whiptails, Sturisomatichthys tamanae is a periphyton grazer — it rasps algae and associated biofilm, diatoms, and fine detritus from hard surfaces in flowing water. The morphology of the mouth — a broad, flat suckermouth with fine, multi-cusped teeth suited for scraping thin films — confirms this dietary mode. The genus is listed as omnivore rather than strict herbivore on multiple databases (Welsfans), and field specimens likely also ingest small invertebrates and organic particles incidentally.
In the aquarium, the diet should be primarily vegetarian: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, and lettuce all work well. Scotcat reports cucumber and spinach as accepted staples. Occasional protein supplementation — frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, white worms — is reasonable but should not dominate the diet. The fish will also graze on any soft algae growing on glass and hardscape. Driftwood in the tank provides additional surface area for biofilm colonisation and light rasping, though this species is not a wood-eater in the way Panaqolus is.
Mating
The reproductive biology of Sturisomatichthys tamanae follows the open substrate-spawning pattern typical of the genus. Males are distinguished from females by their more elaborate odontodes on the cheeks, rostrum, and pectoral spine, which become most pronounced during the breeding season. Females are noticeably wider across the body when carrying eggs. Both sexes develop filament extensions on the caudal fin, but males typically show longer fin extensions overall.
Conditioning involves a varied diet, clean water with regular partial changes, and if possible a gentle seasonal simulation — slightly cooler water and increased current mimic the natural dry-wet season cycle. In the wild, the Chocó has no true dry season but rainfall intensity varies, and temperature fluctuations between 24 and 82 °F are likely. Pairs or small groups (one male, multiple females) can be kept together in large aquaria, as these whiptails are generally peaceful with conspecifics outside of direct competition for spawning sites.
Breeding
Breeding observations in the genus Sturisomatichthys, including the closely related S. citurensis and S. leightoni, point to open-surface spawning — the female deposits eggs on a smooth, vertical surface such as the aquarium glass, broad leaves, or flat stones, and the male fertilises and then guards them. Scotcat notes that eggs for the genus are typically deposited on tank walls; the male fans them continuously and the eggs hatch in approximately 7–9 days at typical tank temperatures.
Specific breeding data for S. tamanae are sparse — PlanetCatfish lists no confirmed breeding reports as of 2024 — but the genus-level pattern is well established. Fry are reportedly able to eat Artemia nauplii, minced lettuce, and mashed peas shortly after becoming free-swimming (Scotcat). The male continues to guard the eggs and early larvae. In the aquarium, low nitrate, stable temperature in the 75–79 °F range, and moderate flow appear to be the most important conditioning factors. A species with Data Deficient IUCN status and limited wild collections, S. tamanae remains a target for any breeder willing to invest in the long-term keeping requirements of a larger whiptail.
In the aquarium
A tank of at least 59 in in length (roughly 80 US gal) is recommended for an adult pair of S. tamanae, reflecting both the fish's size (up to 9.5 in TL with filaments) and its need for adequate flow. Robust filtration providing both mechanical and biological processing is essential; the whiptail produces moderate waste and is sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes. Flow from a powerhead or directional return pipe allows the fish to station itself in current, which is important for long-term health.
Water parameters should target pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (up to about 10 °dH), and temperature 75–82 °F. The fish tolerates the upper end of this range in well-oxygenated, high-flow conditions but should not be maintained in warm, stagnant water. Flat, smooth surfaces — tile-like rocks, sections of slate, or clean acrylic — encourage spawning attempts. Plants are safe companions: the species does not consume robust plants such as Anubias, Java fern, or Bolbitis in normal circumstances, though delicate carpeting plants may suffer from grazing or foot traffic.
Tankmates should be peaceful mid-water species that do not compete for the benthic territory the whiptail requires. Small tetras, hatchetfish, pencilfish, or similar upper-layer fish are ideal. Avoid large, boisterous cichlids or other heavily armoured benthic plecos that may stress or injure the comparatively slender whiptail. The species is rarely available in the trade and is seldom seen outside specialist loricariid keepers.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisomatichthys tamanae as Data Deficient in 2014 (assessors Mesa-Salazar, Sanchez-Duarte, Lasso and Usma), reflecting insufficient information on population status, trends, and threats rather than confirmed decline. A Data Deficient listing under IUCN criteria indicates that the species cannot be adequately evaluated — not that it is safe.
The species' restricted endemic range within the Chocó bioregion of Colombia is a cause for genuine concern. The Chocó is one of the world's top biodiversity hotspots and simultaneously one of the regions experiencing the most rapid deforestation, driven by agricultural expansion (particularly oil palm and cattle ranching), illegal gold mining, and infrastructure development. These activities deliver sedimentation, turbidity, and chemical contamination into the fast-flowing, clear-water rivers that S. tamanae requires. The overlap of a highly endemic river fish with one of the fastest-advancing deforestation frontiers in South America argues for more field surveys and formal re-assessment.
