Taxonomy & naming
Tetraodon lineatus was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of Systema Naturae — the same foundational work that established binomial nomenclature for animals. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid combination as Tetraodon lineatus Linnaeus, 1758, with authority not parenthesised because the species has remained in Linnaeus's original genus.
The genus Tetraodon was historically used as a catch-all for freshwater and brackish pufferfish worldwide, but has since been substantially revised. The African species — including the Fahaka, the Mbu (T. mbu), the Congo puffer (T. schoutedeni), the miurus (T. miurus) and the duboisi — remain in Tetraodon as currently circumscribed. Asian taxa formerly placed here have been redistributed: the green spotted and figure-eight puffers now sit in Dichotomyctere, the Mekong river puffers in Pao, and the ocellated puffer in Leiodon. The dwarf puffers are Carinotetraodon and the golden puffers Auriglobus. Tetraodon is thus now an exclusively African genus.
The name lineatus is Latin for 'striped' or 'marked with lines', a direct reference to the horizontal dark lines that run along the fish's flanks. The common name 'Fahaka' derives from the Arabic vernacular used in parts of Egypt and Sudan, where the species has been known for centuries. It is also called the Nile puffer in reference to its range in that river system.
Morphology
Tetraodon lineatus is a large, robust pufferfish, the maximum recorded total length being 17 in — making it one of the largest African freshwater puffers and substantially bigger than most species kept in the hobby. The body is typical of the family: deep, rounded and scaleless, with a blunt snout, large forward-facing eyes and the four fused beak-like dental plates (two upper, two lower) that characterise the Tetraodontidae. The pectoral fins are the primary means of propulsion in calm water, flapping independently with a sculling motion; the caudal fin serves for bursts of speed.
The colour pattern features a pale cream to yellowish-green dorsal surface and flanks marked with a series of irregular dark brown to black horizontal stripes and blotches, the pattern varying between individuals. The ventral surface is white to pale yellow. The skin is spineless in this species (some tetraodontids bear visible spines when inflated), but it carries tetrodotoxin in the skin and organs as a chemical defence.
Sexual dimorphism is minimal and not reliably distinguished by external examination, which contributes to the difficulty of breeding this species in captivity.
Habitat
The Fahaka puffer is a strictly freshwater species, never brackish. Its native range spans the Nile basin (Egypt and Sudan south through Ethiopia and Kenya), the West and Central Sudanian rivers — the Niger, Senegal, Gambia, Geba and Volta — and the Lake Chad basin, as well as Lake Turkana in East Africa. The range covers a large number of countries including Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Niger, Chad, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso.
The species inhabits the main channels, floodplains and lake margins of these large river systems, typically over sand or mud substrate where benthic invertebrates are abundant. Water in much of its range tends toward warm, neutral to moderately alkaline conditions reflecting the large-river character of the Nile and the Sudano-Sahelian basins — rather than the soft, acidic water of the Congo that characterises T. mbu and related species. FishBase records pH around 7.0 and temperatures of 75–79 °F for the species; care guides suggest a slightly broader range of pH 6.5–7.5 and hardness up to ~15 °dH is tolerated. It is a benthic predator, spending much of its time close to the bottom.
Feeding
Tetraodon lineatus is a carnivore specialising in hard-shelled benthic prey. In the wild its diet consists primarily of snails, bivalves and mussels, supplemented by worms and other invertebrates encountered along the river bottom. This molluscivorous diet is matched to the biology of the beak: the four fused dental plates are exceptionally hard and generate enough bite force to crack snail shells and bivalve valves with ease.
A critical consequence of this diet is that the beak never stops growing throughout the fish's life. Without regular access to hard-shelled prey to grind it down, the beak overgrows and eventually prevents the fish from eating — a condition that is fatal if not corrected by manual trimming, an intervention requiring sedation and specialist care. A diet of snails (pond snails, ramshorns, nerites), small shellfish, mussels and hard-shelled crustaceans is therefore not merely beneficial but necessary for the long-term health of any captive Fahaka.
In the aquarium, whole unshelled cockles, mussels, clams, prawns and live snails are the core diet. Soft foods such as worms or strips of fish may be accepted and can provide variety, but should not replace the hard-shelled component. The Fahaka is a confident and vigorous feeder.
Mating
Breeding of Tetraodon lineatus in captivity is extremely rare and is documented only by a handful of specialist keepers working with very large, dedicated setups. The species' aggressive nature makes pairing inherently difficult: two Fahaka puffers housed together will typically attack each other, and sustained cohabitation without injury requires careful management, very large volumes of water and abundant visual barriers.
Observations from the few recorded captive attempts, as documented by Seriously Fish, indicate that spawning involves the male gripping the female's underside during a close physical embrace, with eggs and milt released simultaneously. Wild mating behaviour has not been systematically studied. There is no evidence of bubble-nest construction or mouthbrooding in this or any other tetraodontid; the family breeds by substrate spawning or open-water egg release.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Tetraodon lineatus is exceptionally rare and has been achieved only by experienced specialists with large purpose-built tanks of 120 US gal or more for the breeding setup, heavily planted and furnished with refuges. The few documented successes describe eggs being deposited on the substrate or among vegetation, after which parental care is minimal to absent — the Fahaka is not known to guard its eggs or fry, in contrast to the Congo puffer (T. schoutedeni), the most commonly bred African tetraodontid, in which the male guards the clutch. In the Fahaka, removing the pair or at least the female after spawning and raising the eggs separately is recommended by the few keepers who have achieved it.
Eggs are reported to hatch in approximately 72–96 hours at tropical temperatures. Fry are tiny and require infusoria and similarly minute foods in the earliest stages, with frequency of feeding being critical. Growth is relatively slow. The species has no established commercial breeding programme, and virtually all Fahakas in the hobby are wild-caught — a point with conservation implications, as demand for large wild specimens is ongoing.
In the aquarium
The Fahaka puffer is a demanding species suited only to dedicated, experienced keepers. At up to 17 in it requires a genuinely large aquarium — a minimum footprint of around 180 × 23.5 in is commonly cited for a single adult, with larger being better. It must be kept alone: the Fahaka is an aggressive predator that will attack and kill tankmates, including other pufferfish. There is no community setup appropriate for this fish.
The beak demands constant attention to diet. Hard-shelled live or fresh-frozen prey — pond snails, ramshorn snails, cockles, mussels, clams, whole prawns — must form the core of every meal. Soft-bodied foods will not wear the beak sufficiently and a diet of earthworms or strips of fish alone will result in beak overgrowth. If the beak does overgrow, sedation and physical trimming by an experienced aquarist or vet is required. The fish should never be offered foods by hand without caution — its bite is powerful enough to draw blood or remove a fingertip.
Pufferfish are scaleless and lack true protective gill covers, making them sensitive to medications. Copper-based treatments are toxic to them and must never be used. Doses of other medications should be halved or more and introduced cautiously. The Fahaka is a heavy eater and produces a large bioload; strong, oversized filtration and frequent large water changes are non-negotiable. The fish should never be lifted clear of the water — when stressed or threatened it gulps water to inflate, and exposure to air during inflation can be fatal. Its skin and internal organs contain tetrodotoxin; it is dangerous to consume and should be handled with care even in routine aquarium maintenance.
Conservation
Tetraodon lineatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no current conservation status. Its very wide distribution across multiple large river systems — the Nile, the Niger, the Senegal, the Volta, the Chad basin and Lake Turkana — gives it a degree of security that narrow-range African puffers like the Cross River puffer (T. pustulatus) do not share.
Nonetheless, the species faces the range of pressures common to large-river fishes across sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile basin: habitat modification from dam construction and irrigation infrastructure, pollution from agricultural and industrial runoff, overharvesting for subsistence food and for the ornamental trade. Because virtually no captive breeding exists at commercial scale, all demand from the aquarium hobby is met by wild capture — often of large, sexually mature individuals. The tetrodotoxin content of its skin and organs makes it unsuitable and dangerous as human food in most of its range, which historically reduced subsistence pressure, though this protection is not universal.
A formal IUCN assessment would clarify the true conservation position of this species. Hobbyists keeping Fahaka puffers can contribute to reducing wild-take pressure by supporting any future captive-breeding efforts and by providing the specialist long-term care that prevents premature mortality of wild-caught animals.
