Tetraodon schoutedeni, the Congo puffer, is a small, richly patterned freshwater puffer endemic to the Congo Basin — one of the most characterful and sporadically available African species in the aquarium hobby. Reaching around 6 in, it is notably smaller than the giant mbu puffer that shares its basin, and is among the few African pufferfish for which captive breeding has been documented, with the male standing guard over the clutch of bottom-laid eggs. Like all puffers it is a molluscivore with a permanently growing beak, a volatile temperament, and a suite of biological quirks that demand dedicated, species-appropriate care.

Taxonomy & naming

Tetraodon schoutedeni was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1926, based on material from the Congo River. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists it as a valid species within Tetraodon Linnaeus, 1758, the genus now restricted to the freshwater puffers of Africa.

The wider tetraodontid family underwent significant generic revision in the early twenty-first century. The old catch-all genus Tetraodon formerly held puffers from Africa and Asia alike; it has since been pruned so that Tetraodon in the current sense is exclusively African, encompassing the Congo Basin species (schoutedeni, mbu, miurus, duboisi) and the Nile-to-Sudanian fahaka (T. lineatus), among others. The Asian species previously assigned here have moved to Dichotomyctere (the green spotted and figure-eight puffers), Pao (the Mekong river puffers), Leiodon and Auriglobus, while the dwarf puffers sit in Carinotetraodon and the South American species in Colomesus. The specific epithet schoutedeni honours Henri Schouteden, the Belgian zoologist and ornithologist who worked extensively on the fauna of the Belgian Congo.

Morphology

The Congo puffer is a compact, rounded fish reaching approximately 6 in standard length, though aquarium specimens more commonly reach 4–4.5 in. The body is the typical puffer shape: globose and scaleless, tapering toward a small caudal peduncle, with no true gill covers and no pelvic fins. The four fused teeth form the characteristic beak — two in the upper jaw, two in the lower — which is perpetually growing and must be worn down by hard food.

Coloration is distinctive and appealing: a warm yellowish to olive-brown ground is overlaid with a pattern of dark brown to black spots and reticulations, giving a mottled, somewhat tortoiseshell effect. The belly is pale. The eyes are large, independently mobile and expressive — a feature hobbyists often describe as giving puffers a personality unlike most fish. Sexual dichromatism is subtle or absent; females may appear slightly deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Tetraodon schoutedeni is endemic to the Congo Basin, the vast river system draining central Africa. Its type locality is the Congo River itself, and occurrence records are concentrated in the central and lower Congo, one of the most biodiverse freshwater systems on Earth. Habitat data are sparse, but the Congo Basin's mainstream and connected waters are characteristically warm, soft and acidic — in contrast to the harder, more alkaline Nile-system waters that the fahaka puffer (T. lineatus) inhabits.

Conditional water parameters reported for the species and consistent with the Congo Basin system include temperatures of 75–82 °F, pH roughly 6.0–7.0, and soft to moderately soft hardness. The Congo River's extreme depth and the strong chemical gradients between its channels and backwaters mean local conditions vary, but soft, well-oxygenated warm water is the reliable baseline. The species is benthic in habits, associated with submerged structure, rocks and snag piles where molluscs and crustaceans are available.

Feeding

Like all Tetraodon, the Congo puffer is a carnivore specialising in hard-shelled prey. In the wild its diet centres on molluscs and crustaceans — snails, small bivalves, freshwater shrimps and similar invertebrates — which it cracks open with its powerful beak. Occasional small fish or insect larvae likely supplement the diet of opportunity.

In the aquarium, offering hard-shelled food is not optional: the beak consists of fused teeth that grow continuously and must be abraded by hard prey or they will overgrow to the point of interfering with feeding, eventually requiring manual trimming by a veterinarian. Pond snails (Melanoides, Physa, Planorbis) are the preferred staple; fresh or thawed cockles, mussels, small crayfish and shrimp in the shell are valuable additions. Soft foods such as earthworms and bloodworm can supplement but must not replace the hard-shelled component.

Mating

The Congo puffer is a substrate spawner. Courtship is poorly documented in the wild, but hobbyist breeders report behaviour typical of the family: the male pursues and courts the female over the bottom, pressing close and nudging her before eggs are deposited on a firm substrate — a flat stone, broad leaf or the aquarium glass. There is no bubble-nest and no mouthbrooding.

The female deposits a clutch of adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, after which the male takes charge of the nest, remaining close to fan and guard the eggs throughout incubation. This male-guarding pattern is one of the defining characteristics of captive T. schoutedeni breeding accounts and differentiates it from scatter-type African puffers. Outside of the spawning context the species is aggressively territorial and the pair should not be left together without close monitoring, as puffers readily attack conspecifics.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Tetraodon schoutedeni is rare but documented, making it one of only a handful of African puffers to have been reproduced in the hobby. Accounts describe conditioning the pair with a varied diet of live and frozen molluscs and crustaceans, and providing a spacious tank with visual breaks and a suitable spawning site — a flat slate or smooth stone placed on the substrate.

Spawning is followed by active male guarding of the egg mass. The incubation period is not precisely established in publicly available hobbyist records. Raising fry presents the typical puffer challenge: they require tiny live food initially (infusoria, newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii) and grow into the aggressive, hard-biting temperament of the adults rapidly. The rarity of the species in the trade means breeding success is considered a significant hobbyist achievement, and specific data on clutch size and incubation duration remain sparse.

In the aquarium

The Congo puffer demands a species-only or puffer-specialist setup. It is aggressive and territorial toward conspecifics and will reliably fin-nip or attack any tankmate — its bite is powerful enough to injure far larger fish. A single specimen is the safest approach; if a pair is attempted for breeding, the tank must be large and heavily decorated with sight-breaks, and both fish watched closely for serious aggression.

The beak is the keeper's primary husbandry responsibility: a diet of hard-shelled prey — pond snails as a staple, supplemented with cockles, mussels and shrimp in the shell — is mandatory to keep it worn to a functional length. Soft-bodied foods alone will allow the beak to overgrow. The Congo puffer's water should be warm (75–82 °F), soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.0), reflecting the Congo Basin origin. Strong filtration is essential: puffers are messy, protein-heavy eaters and produce significant waste; large, frequent water changes (at least 30–50% weekly) are non-negotiable. As scaleless fish without true gill covers, puffers are sensitive to medications — copper-based treatments are toxic and must never be used; dose all other medications conservatively. Puffers inflate as a defence by gulping water and should never be lifted into the air, as air-inflation is harmful and can prove fatal. The skin and internal organs carry tetrodotoxin; handle with appropriate care and never allow the fish to be consumed.

Conservation

Tetraodon schoutedeni has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List, and the species may be Data Deficient or Not Evaluated given limited distribution data and the narrow endemic status in the Congo Basin. Its range — the Congo River system — is one of the most hydrologically intact large river systems remaining in Africa, but it faces growing pressure from artisanal and industrial mining, agricultural expansion and associated water-quality degradation, as well as hydroelectric development projects.

The species appears rarely in the aquarium trade, suggesting either genuinely low abundance, limited collection effort or logistical difficulty in exporting from the region. Wild capture for the hobby is the primary route into the trade since captive breeding remains uncommon. Increased captive-breeding success by hobbyists would reduce dependence on wild-caught specimens and provide valuable baseline data on the species' biology — both outcomes worth encouraging given how little is formally known about this puffer in its native habitat.
