Bedotia alveyi is a Madagascar rainbowfish described only in 2010 from a single cluster of cool, clear streams in the Makira region of northeastern Madagascar. Slender and silvery, it carries crescent-shaped golden spangles on the rear half of many of its body scales and a single diffuse dark band along the flank — a quieter, more localised cousin of the familiar Madagascar rainbowfishes of the aquarium trade. Endemic to a few river tributaries and assessed by the IUCN as Near Threatened, it is essentially unknown in the hobby and known mainly from the work that named it.

Taxonomy & naming

Bedotia alveyi was described in 2010 by Christopher C. Jones, William Leo Smith and John S. Sparks in Copeia, in a paper titled 'A new species of rainbowfish (Teleostei: Melanotaenioidei: Bedotiidae) from the Makira Region of Northeastern Madagascar.' The type material comes from tributaries of the Antainambalana and Vohimaro rivers in the Makira region, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Bedotia alveyi Jones, Smith & Sparks, 2010. Because the species was described in Bedotia, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.

The genus Bedotia is the larger of the two genera in the family Bedotiidae, the Madagascar rainbowfishes — an endemic radiation restricted to the island's freshwaters and placed within the Melanotaenioidei alongside the New Guinea and Australian rainbowfishes. Within Bedotia, B. alveyi is diagnosed less by meristics, which overlap broadly across the genus, than by colour pattern: a crescent-shaped to semi-circular iridescent spangle on the posterior half of many opercular and flank scales, and a single diffuse broad midlateral band, against the two bands seen in the widespread B. geayi and B. madagascariensis. Many congeners are similarly narrow-range endemics, each tied to a particular river basin, so a Makira-region species fit the established pattern of fine-scale geographic structuring in the genus.

Morphology

Bedotia alveyi is a small, slender, fusiform rainbowfish reaching about 3.5 in in standard length. As in other bedotiids the body is elongate and laterally compressed, built for a life of active swimming in flowing water rather than the deeper-bodied profile of many Melanotaenia. The fins lack spines: the dorsal fin carries roughly 16 to 25 soft rays and the anal fin about 17 to 22 soft rays, with 35 to 37 vertebrae reported in the original description.

The species' most useful field character is its scale ornamentation. Many opercular and flank scales bear a crescent-shaped to semi-circular spangle on their posterior half, throwing golden — and occasionally whitish to bluish — iridescent highlights across the body, while a single diffuse, broad band runs along the midline of the flank. The caudal-fin lobes are rust-red. Together, that single midlateral band, the crescentic scale spangles, and the red tail lobes separate B. alveyi from the better-known double-banded Madagascar rainbowfishes. As with many recently described, rarely kept fishes, detailed accounts of live colour and of any sexual difference in pattern are sparse, and the description rests largely on preserved type material.

Habitat

Bedotia alveyi is endemic to northeastern Madagascar, where it is known from tributaries of the Antainambalana and Vohimaro river systems in the Makira region — an area of humid forest that forms part of one of the island's largest remaining blocks of intact rainforest. The recorded latitude band of roughly 15 to 16 degrees south places it firmly in the wet northeast.

The tributaries it occupies are described as generally shallow, clear and cool, with moderate flow and low turbidity. Substrates range from rocky — small rocks up to large boulders — to somewhat sandy stretches. This is a clear-water, well-oxygenated stream fish, not an inhabitant of still or turbid lowland water, and the cool, clear character of these forest streams comes directly from the surrounding forest cover that stabilises flow and limits sediment. FishBase classifies the species as a tropical, pelagic freshwater fish. Precise field measurements of water chemistry for B. alveyi are not published in the sources at hand, so specific temperature and pH figures are treated here as data sparse rather than estimated.

Feeding

No species-specific diet study has been published for Bedotia alveyi, and FishBase carries no populated diet record for it; its trophic level is given only as a modelled estimate of about 2.6, consistent with a small carnivore-leaning omnivore. What can be said is therefore drawn cautiously from the genus and from the species' habitat.

Madagascar rainbowfishes of the genus Bedotia are active, upper- and mid-water feeders of clear streams, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and insects fallen onto the surface — together with whatever drift the current delivers. A slender, fast-swimming fish in a moderate-flow stream is well suited to picking invertebrate prey from the water column and surface. In the absence of direct observations for B. alveyi specifically, this should be read as a genus-level inference rather than a documented feeding record for the species.

Mating

There is no published account of courtship or spawning behaviour for Bedotia alveyi. The species was described from preserved material, and being effectively absent from the aquarium trade it has not generated the breeder observations that accumulate for popular rainbowfishes. The reproductive notes below are therefore drawn from the better-studied members of the genus and the broader rainbowfish lineage, and are offered as analogues rather than as records for B. alveyi.

Bedotia rainbowfishes, like rainbowfishes generally, are egg-scattering plant spawners without parental care. Males of the commonly kept Madagascar rainbowfishes court females with fin displays and heightened colour, and spawning is most active in the early morning. Pairs deposit small adhesive eggs that attach by fine filaments to fine-leaved vegetation, with a few eggs released at a time over an extended period rather than in a single clutch. Whether B. alveyi follows this pattern in detail is unrecorded; given its placement in the genus it is a reasonable expectation but not an established fact.

Breeding

No captive or wild breeding record exists for Bedotia alveyi in the sources reviewed. The species is recently described, restricted to a small set of Makira-region streams, and not part of the ornamental-fish trade, so the husbandry literature that documents spawning for fishes like B. madagascariensis simply does not exist for it.

By analogy with congeners, Bedotia are typically egg-scattering plant spawners whose adhesive eggs hang by filaments from fine-leaved plants or spawning mops and hatch over roughly a week to ten days, with adults offering no care and readily eating their own eggs. If B. alveyi were ever brought into culture it would most plausibly follow this template — conditioning a group, spawning over fine plants or mops, and removing the eggs to a separate container for rearing on very small first foods. This is, however, an extrapolation from the genus; the specifics of egg size, clutch, and incubation for B. alveyi are unknown and are noted here as data sparse.

In the aquarium

Bedotia alveyi is essentially not in the aquarium trade. Described in 2010 and confined to a few tributaries in the Makira region of northeastern Madagascar, it has no established hobby presence, and no species-specific care account could be located across the rainbowfish husbandry community — only genus-level guidance covering the widely kept Madagascar rainbowfishes such as B. madagascariensis and B. geayi.

Those genus analogues describe peaceful, active shoaling fish that are best kept in groups of six to eight or more, in a planted tank with plenty of open swimming space and cool, clean, well-oxygenated water — conditions that mirror B. alveyi's clear, cool, moderate-flow stream habitat. Should the species ever enter culture, that profile would be the sensible starting point: a roomy tank with steady current and high oxygen, a group rather than a pair, and stream-clear water management. These recommendations are explicitly borrowed from the genus and should not be read as a husbandry record specific to B. alveyi, for which none exists.

Conservation

Bedotia alveyi is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 30 June 2014, published 2016; species ID 55324446). That status reflects the vulnerability of a freshwater fish restricted to a small set of river tributaries in a single region of Madagascar: a narrow range offers little buffer against local declines.

The threats facing Madagascar's endemic rainbowfishes are well documented at the family level and apply directly here — habitat degradation, deforestation and the sedimentation that follows the loss of forest cover, and the spread of introduced fishes that prey on or compete with native species. For a clear-water, cool-stream specialist like B. alveyi, forest loss in the Makira catchment is especially consequential, because the cool, low-turbidity conditions it depends on are maintained by the surrounding forest. The species' occurrence within the Makira protected-area landscape, one of the largest remaining rainforest blocks on the island, is a meaningful point in its favour, but its overall outlook remains tied to the continued integrity of those northeastern Malagasy streams.
