Taxonomy & naming
Bedotia longianalis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1914 from freshwater and brackish water near sea level at Mahambo, on the east coast of Madagascar. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats it as a valid species in the genus Bedotia, family Bedotiidae — the Madagascar rainbowfishes — within the order Atheriniformes. Because it was described in Bedotia and remains there, no parenthetical authority is used.
The genus Bedotia honours Maurice Bedot (1859–1927), the Swiss systematist and director of the Geneva natural history museum, known for his work on hydrozoans — it was named in his memory, not for any feature of the fishes. The Bedotiidae are a small Malagasy radiation whose closest relatives lie among the Australasian rainbowfishes (Melanotaeniidae). That split across the Indian Ocean is a Gondwanan disjunction examined in Sparks & Smith's 2004 molecular phylogeny, which treated Madagascar's bedotiids and the Australasian rainbowfishes as one ancient, vicariance-shaped lineage.
The specific epithet longianalis combines the Latin longus ('long') with analis ('of the anus', here referring to the anal fin), pointing to the elongate anal fin that distinguishes the species. Within the genus, Bedotia species are separated largely on fin proportions, colour pattern, and meristics, and the group has seen ongoing taxonomic attention as Madagascar's freshwater fauna is revised.

A small, slender, laterally compressed rainbowfish built to the Bedotiidae pattern: an elongate body, a terminal mouth suited to picking small prey from the water column, and the two separated dorsal fins of the atheriniform rainbowfishes.
