Taxonomy & naming
Bedotia madagascariensis was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1903 and is the type species of the genus Bedotia, which gives its name to the family Bedotiidae — the Madagascar rainbowfishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Bedotia madagascariensis Regan, 1903; because the species has always been held in Bedotia, the authority is written without parentheses. The species sits in the order Atheriniformes, the silversides and rainbowfishes, but its lineage is geographically and evolutionarily distinct from the Melanotaeniidae of the Australia–New Guinea region, reflecting Madagascar's long isolation.
The genus name honours Maurice Bedot (1859–1927), a Swiss zoologist and director of the Geneva natural history museum who specialised in Hydrozoa; the specific epithet madagascariensis simply marks the island of origin. The species has a tangled history in the aquarium hobby, where it has long been confused with its congener Bedotia geayi of the Mananjary basin; many fish traded as 'B. geayi' or simply 'Madagascar rainbowfish' are in fact B. madagascariensis or hybrids. The modern reference point is the 2007 redescription by Paul Loiselle and Damaris Rodriguez (Zootaxa 1520), which re-diagnosed both B. madagascariensis and B. geayi and helped untangle the two.
Morphology
Bedotia madagascariensis is a small, elongate, laterally compressed rainbowfish reaching about 3.5 in standard length, with a slender, torpedo-shaped body well suited to life in flowing water. Like other atheriniforms it carries two separate dorsal fins — a small spinous first dorsal set well back on the body, followed by a soft-rayed second dorsal opposite the anal fin. The eyes are large, as is typical of a sight-feeding, surface-oriented stream fish.
The base colour is silvery to translucent olive, marked by a dark lateral stripe running from the snout through the eye to the tail base. The colour is in the males. Their unpaired fins develop bright margins — yellow, orange, and black banding along the edges of the second dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, with a reddish or yellow flush that intensifies during display. Females and immatures are plainer, with more subdued fin colour and a fuller body outline. As with rainbowfishes generally, colour is strongly mood- and condition-dependent, brightest in displaying males in good water and good light. Hard meristic characters overlap with B. geayi, so fin pattern and origin are the practical means of telling the two apart.
Habitat
The species is endemic to eastern coastal Madagascar, where its natural range runs from the lower reaches of the Ivoloina River south to at least Manambolo Creek, which drains into the Canal des Pangalanes (Lakandrano Mpangalana) a short distance south of Vatomandry. These are low-altitude waters — typically at elevations up to around 98 ft above sea level — comprising clear, well-shaded streams with slow-flowing sections and dense riparian vegetation. The water is characteristically soft and slightly acidic, sometimes tannin-stained, the cool clarity of a forested catchment.
Within these streams the fish forms loose, size-graded aggregations of up to several dozen individuals, with juveniles occupying shallow margins and larger adults holding deeper water. Beyond its native eastern drainages, the species has an introduced foothold inland: following a 1950s translocation to marshes near Mahitsy, close to the capital Antananarivo, it has become established in parts of the Betsiboka basin. Reported aquarium-husbandry figures from this habitat envelope are a temperature range of roughly 73–84 °F and pH from about 5.0 up to neutral, with soft to moderately hard water.
Feeding
Bedotia madagascariensis is an omnivore that feeds chiefly in the upper and middle water column, taking small invertebrates from the surface and drift. Its trophic level is low (around 2.6), consistent with a diet built on small insects, insect larvae, and other minute aquatic and terrestrial prey, supplemented by plant and algal material. The large eyes and slim, manoeuvrable body fit a fish that hunts moving prey by sight in moderately flowing, shaded water.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and readily accepts a varied menu: good-quality flake and small micropellets, including vegetable or green flake, alongside frozen and live foods such as mosquito larvae, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and Daphnia. As with most rainbowfishes, a varied diet with a real live or frozen component improves colour and breeding condition. It grazes more or less constantly, so small portions several times a day suit it better than one large feeding.
Mating
The Madagascar rainbowfish is an egg-scattering, plant-spawning species with no parental care, and under good conditions it spawns more or less continuously rather than in a single seasonal event. Mature males display to females with intensified fin colour — the yellow, orange, and black fin margins flaring at their most saturated — and drive receptive females through fine-leaved vegetation. Sexual dimorphism underpins this courtship: males carry the brighter unpaired-fin colour, while females are fuller-bodied and plainer.
Display and spawning are most active in the early part of the day. A male leads a willing female over fine plants or spawning mops, where the pair release a few eggs at a time. Because males show best against rivals and the species shoals naturally, breeders tend to condition and spawn small groups rather than isolated pairs; keeping several individuals together both encourages display and reduces the harassment that can fall on a lone female.
Breeding
Bedotia madagascariensis is a serial, continuous spawner that deposits relatively large, tough eggs a few at a time over a period of days to weeks, rather than producing a single clutch. In the aquarium, a male drives the female over fine-leaved plants — Java moss is a classic choice — or over synthetic spawning mops, and the adhesive eggs are scattered among the fibres, where they attach and develop.
The comparatively large, durable eggs hatch in roughly 7 to 10 days, the incubation time shortening with warmth. Adults will eat their own eggs, though less so when they are well fed, so breeders commonly transfer the spawning medium or eggs to a separate rearing container to protect the developing brood. The fry are small and require correspondingly small first foods — infusoria initially, graduating to newly hatched Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii and finely powdered prepared foods as they grow. Growth is steady, and the bright adult fin colours of males develop gradually as the fish mature.
In the aquarium
The Madagascar rainbowfish is an active, peaceful shoaling fish that is best kept in groups of ten or more; in a proper school the males display against one another and hold their best colour, while lone or paired fish tend to be drabber and males can become mildly territorial if females are outnumbered. It is a restless, capable swimmer that needs open swimming space — a tank of around 47 in (four feet) or longer suits an adult group — combined with dense planting and driftwood at the margins to provide cover and break sightlines.
Water should reflect the species' clear, soft, slightly acidic stream origins: a temperature of roughly 73–84 °F, soft to moderately hard water, and a pH from about 5.0 to neutral, kept clean and well oxygenated with efficient filtration and a gentle current. Dim to medium lighting and the cover of dense riparian-style planting suit the fish and show off its fin colour. Tankmates should be similarly sized, peaceful, and not so boisterous as to outcompete it at feeding — other rainbowfishes and calm community species work well. It is hardy once its grouping and water needs are met. Just bear in mind the long-standing trade confusion with B. geayi, and seek captive-bred stock of confirmed identity where possible.
Conservation
Bedotia madagascariensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii,v), with the assessment dated 22 June 2016 (species ID 2721, assessment 58294066). The listing reflects a narrowly endemic fish whose eastern-coastal range is under sustained pressure. Deforestation of the surrounding catchments drives erosion and siltation that degrade the clear, shaded streams the species depends on, while introduced predators — notably the spotted snakehead Channa maculata, introduced to Madagascar in the early 1970s — together with piscivorous wading birds add direct predation pressure.
This combination of a small range and mounting habitat and predation threats is a recurring pattern across Madagascar's freshwater fishes, many of which are endemic and imperilled. The hobby offers a measure of relief: trade specimens are largely captive-bred, so demand falls mainly on aquarium-raised rather than wild fish. Aquarists can best support the species by sourcing confirmed, captive-bred stock — which also helps counter the long-running confusion with B. geayi that has muddled both trade and conservation records for the Madagascar rainbowfishes.
