Taxonomy & naming

Chilatherina alleni was described in 1997 by David S. Price, based on a series of thirteen specimens measuring 1.5–3.5 in in standard length collected from a tributary of the Aiborei River in the Siriwo catchment of Irian Jaya — the western, Indonesian half of New Guinea, now the province of West Papua. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Chilatherina alleni Price, 1997; because the species has remained in the genus in which it was described, no parenthetical authority is used. FishBase places it in the order Atheriniformes, family Melanotaeniidae — the true rainbowfishes and their blue-eye relatives.

The genus Chilatherina is endemic to New Guinea and comprises roughly eleven species. Its name combines the Greek cheilos, 'lip,' with atherina, the classical Greek name for a small silverside (the eperlane) — a nod to the rainbowfishes' atheriniform affinities and to the genus's distinctive jaw structure, which is the principal feature separating Chilatherina from the closely related and far larger genus Melanotaenia. The specific epithet alleni honours Dr Gerald Robert 'Gerry' Allen, the American-born Australian ichthyologist whose decades of fieldwork and revisions underpin most of what is known about New Guinea's freshwater fishes, including his own 1981 revision of Chilatherina.

In the aquarium trade the species is almost universally called the 'Wapoga rainbowfish,' a name that traces not to the type locality but to the hobby strain's collection history: the fish kept by hobbyists are generally understood to descend from a 2008 collection by Johannes Graf and colleagues taken from the Wapoga River. The trade name has stuck even though it does not correspond to the river from which the species was originally described.

Morphology

Chilatherina alleni is a small rainbowfish. The type series ranged from about 1.5–3.5 in standard length, and FishBase gives a maximum of 2.5 in SL; aquarium accounts report fish reaching roughly 3.5 in in total length under good conditions, the larger figure reflecting tank-grown specimens and the difference between standard and total length measurements. The body is the moderately elongate, laterally compressed shape typical of the genus, carrying the family's divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior one.

What defines the species is its colour behaviour rather than any fixed pattern. At rest the fish is comparatively subdued; mature males flush into a strongly saturated display state. This is not permanent body colour but a mood-driven signalling system, intensifying sharply after a water change and during courtship, when a male flashes high colour to coax a female into releasing eggs. Hobby accounts note that the fish are attractive even half-grown at 1.5–2 in and grow steadily more colourful with age, with the most intense colour reserved for dominant, displaying adult males.

As in rainbowfishes generally, the sexes differ: males grow larger, develop deeper bodies, and carry the full display colour, while females remain plainer. Members of Chilatherina are noted for changing colour strongly with age and for the role that jaw structure plays in separating them from Melanotaenia, but beyond these features the genus's meristics overlap broadly and the everyday distinction between species rests heavily on colour and provenance.

Habitat

The species is endemic to New Guinea, occurring in the rivers of the Siriwo and Wapoga drainages of West Papua (formerly Irian Jaya), Indonesia. FishBase classes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical fish. The type locality is a tributary of the Aiborei River within the Siriwo catchment, and the hobby strain originates from the Wapoga River system to the east.

Allen's 1981 revision of the genus records that Chilatherina species favour stream sections receiving maximum sunlight, over a substratum of gravel or sand that is often littered with leaves and fallen log debris. This is the clear, well-lit, flowing-water habitat characteristic of many New Guinea rainbowfishes, where overhanging vegetation supplies both shade at the margins and a steady fall of terrestrial insects into the water.

Precise field measurements of temperature, pH, and hardness for C. alleni specifically are not recorded in the available sources, so the species' preferred water chemistry is inferred largely from its lowland tropical New Guinea range and from the conditions under which it is successfully kept and bred in captivity. On that basis it is treated as a warm-water fish suited to roughly the mid-20s Celsius; firm wild values are data-sparse and are not asserted here beyond what the husbandry record supports.

Feeding

Chilatherina alleni is an omnivore with a low trophic level — FishBase gives 2.9 — reflecting a diet built substantially on small invertebrates and plant material. Allen's account of the genus lists filamentous algae, small crustacea, terrestrial insects such as ants and beetles taken from the surface, and aquatic insect larvae among the natural foods. The preference for sunlit stream sections fringed by vegetation fits this mixed surface-and-substrate feeding strategy, with a steady input of terrestrial insects supplementing what the fish grazes and gleans in the water.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and, like rainbowfishes generally, accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods. A varied diet that includes a meaningful live or frozen component — small crustaceans, insect larvae, and similar — supports both condition and the development of the males' display colour, which can fade on a monotonous regime. As an active mid- and upper-water feeder it does best fed small amounts across the day rather than in a single large meal.

Mating

Mating follows the rainbowfish pattern: male colour display drives female spawning readiness. The male shifts from a subdued normal state into intense display colour, which sharpens during courtship and works directly to encourage the female to release eggs. The display is reliably triggered and amplified by a water change — a cue breeders use deliberately to bring males into peak form.

The genus reaches sexual maturity at a small size. Allen's data indicate females maturing at roughly 1.5 in standard length and males at about 2 in — meaning the fish are reproductively active well before reaching their full adult length. This early maturity, combined with the high resilience FishBase attributes to the species (a population doubling time of under fifteen months), points to a fast-turnover, opportunistic life history.

As in rainbowfishes broadly, the most vivid display and the most active spawning come in the morning hours and in the presence of more than one male, so the species shows its colour best — and breeds most readily — when kept as a group rather than as an isolated pair.

Breeding

Chilatherina alleni is an egg-scattering, plant-attaching spawner that is bred much as Melanotaenia rainbowfishes are. According to husbandry accounts of the species, gravid females deposit several eggs daily rather than a single clutch, each egg adhering to aquatic vegetation by a thread-like filament — the hallmark attachment mechanism of the family.

Incubation is reported at around fifteen days at 72–75 °F, after which the fry hatch and grow rapidly; under good conditions they may themselves reach maturity by the end of their first year. The combination of continuous small-batch egg-laying, ready attachment to fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and quick fry growth makes the breeding strategy familiar to anyone who has spawned rainbowfishes, and the practical method is the same: condition a group well, provide fine-leaved plants or mops as a spawning medium, and move eggs or mops to a separate rearing container since the adults offer no parental care and will consume eggs and fry.

The newly hatched fry are small and need correspondingly small first foods before graduating to larger fare. Because the species spawns over an extended period rather than all at once, eggs and fry of several ages are typically present together, and steady harvesting of the spawning medium is the usual way to manage a productive group.

In the aquarium

Chilatherina alleni is a peaceful, active, schooling rainbowfish that is rather rare in the hobby — a species sought out by rainbowfish specialists more than one encountered casually in the trade. It is undemanding in care, which is generally described as the same as for Melanotaenia: a group in a well-filtered, planted tank with open swimming space and bright lighting that lets the males' display colour develop. As with the rest of the family, the fish is at its best kept in a group so that males display against one another.

Firm species-specific wild water values are not on record, so aquarists keep it on rainbowfish defaults appropriate to its lowland tropical New Guinea origin: warm water around the mid-20s Celsius, with breeding accounts citing temperatures of roughly 72–75 °F for successful incubation. Stable, clean conditions and regular water changes matter more than precise numbers — and the water changes have the added benefit of triggering the males into colour. The fish is small, peaceful, and harmless, suiting a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates.

For the hobbyist, the appeal of this species is precisely the males' on-demand colour shift: a routine maintenance change can turn a tank of plain silvery fish into a flickering display within minutes. That responsiveness, plus the modest size and easy temperament, makes it worth the hunt for those who can find it — though its rarity keeps it out of most general aquarium stores.

Conservation

Chilatherina alleni is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), which concerns a restricted extent of occurrence combined with a continuing decline in habitat quality. The assessment was published with species ID 169522, and the Vulnerable status is corroborated by independent references including an Australian import-risk review.

The core conservation concern for the species is its naturally limited distribution: confined to the Siriwo and Wapoga river systems of West Papua, it has the inherent fragility of any narrowly endemic fish, with little outlying population to buffer against localised pressure on its habitat. The criterion B listing reflects exactly this — a small geographic range exposed to a continuing decline in the quality of the streams it depends on.

The species is not heavily exploited for the aquarium trade — it is rare and specialised in the hobby rather than a mass-collected staple — and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and the population as resilient. The pressures behind its Vulnerable status are therefore tied to habitat condition within a confined range rather than to collecting. Its ready captive breeding means that the limited hobby demand can be met largely from tank-bred stock, sparing the wild population from significant collecting pressure.
