Chilatherina bulolo was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gilbert Percy Whitley in 1938, from material collected in the Bulolo River drainage of the Morobe region in what is now Papua New Guinea. Because the species was originally placed in a different genus and later moved to Chilatherina, the authority is written with parentheses — (Whitley, 1938). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; the species sits in the family Melanotaeniidae, the rainbowfishes and their relatives, within the order Atheriniformes.
Chilatherina is one of the New Guinea rainbowfish genera, set apart within the family by body form and fin structure rather than the bright two-tone colour patterns that make some Melanotaenia famous. The genus name pairs the Greek cheilos, lip, with atherina, the old Greek word for the silverside or smelt — a nod both to the lips and to the silverside-like form shared across the family. The specific epithet bulolo is a geographic name taken from the Bulolo River, the type locality, and gives the fish its English common name, the Bulolo rainbowfish.
Morphology
Chilatherina bulolo is a small rainbowfish, reaching about 3 in in standard length according to the measurements summarised in Allen's 1991 field guide to the freshwater fishes of New Guinea. Like other members of the family it has the characteristic rainbowfish profile: a laterally compressed, moderately elongate body carrying two separate dorsal fins — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal — together with a long-based anal fin. Recorded meristics include roughly 5 to 7 dorsal spines, 9 to 13 dorsal soft rays, a single anal spine, and a high count of 19 to 24 anal soft rays.
In-life colour notes for this species are thin in the technical literature. Rather than invent a precise pattern, the honest move is to fall back on the genus form: a slim, silvery rainbowfish whose males deepen in body and intensify in colour with maturity, as across Melanotaeniidae.
