Taxonomy & naming
Chilatherina axelrodi was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 1979, on the basis of material collected earlier that year from a small stream in the Bewani Mountains of northern Papua New Guinea. Because it was described in Chilatherina, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used: Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Chilatherina axelrodi Allen, 1979. The genus Chilatherina is one of several within the family Melanotaeniidae — the true rainbowfishes — which radiate across New Guinea and, in the case of Melanotaenia, northern and eastern Australia.
The genus name Chilatherina combines the Greek cheilos, 'lip', with atherina, an old Greek name for the smelt or silverside, alluding to the family's atheriniform affinities and to the prominent lips of these fishes. The specific epithet axelrodi is a patronym honouring Dr Herbert Richard Axelrod (1927–2017), the American tropical-fish authority, entrepreneur and pet-book publisher whose name attaches to a number of ornamental species.
Within the genus, C. axelrodi is one of the smaller, more slender species. It came to scientific notice through live specimens collected in September 1979 by Gerald Allen with Brian Parkinson and Peter Neusinger; most of those original fish died soon after reaching Australia, and the species has stayed scarce in collections and the hobby ever since.
Morphology
A small, laterally compressed rainbowfish. FishBase records a maximum of about 3 in standard length, drawn from Allen's New Guinea field-guide material; aquarium and import literature has reported larger dominant males — to around 4 in — with females usually under 3 in. Like the rest of the family it carries the divided dorsal fin, a short anterior portion followed by a longer posterior one, set above an anal fin with a long base. Reported fin counts are 6–8 dorsal spines and 11–13 dorsal soft rays, with a single anal spine and 19–24 anal soft rays.
The sexes are easy to tell apart in a settled group. Mature males are the showier: brighter, larger, and deeper-bodied, the body deepening with age and dominance as it does across the rainbowfishes. Females stay plain — silvery, comparatively unmarked. Male colour tracks mood and condition, sharpening in a displaying fish and fading in a stressed or subordinate one. Published descriptions of the live colour pattern are thin, so beyond the brighter, deeper-bodied male the fine points are best treated as data-sparse rather than asserted.
Habitat
Chilatherina axelrodi is a narrow endemic, known with confidence only from the Yungkiri Stream (Yungkiri Creek), a small tributary of the Pual River — formerly the Nemayer or Neumayer River — in the Bewani Mountains of northern Papua New Guinea. The type locality lies roughly 25 mi inland from Vanimo on the north coast, near the border with the Indonesian province of West Papua. FishBase places the species in the latitude band of about 2°S to 4°S.
The stream itself is small, narrow and slow-flowing, set in lowland rainforest, with slightly turbid water. The original collectors recorded the fish around sub-surface vegetation, submerged logs and branches, and noted a water temperature near 82 °F and a pH of about 7.8 at the collection site — neutral to slightly alkaline conditions rather than the soft, acidic water of many rainforest streams. FishBase summarises the species as tropical and freshwater, with a temperature range of roughly 81–86 °F.
It does not have the stream to itself: Chilatherina crassispinosa and Melanotaenia affinis were collected alongside it, while C. fasciata and C. lorentzi were taken elsewhere in the Pual River system. The single-stream distribution is the central fact of the species' biology and the reason its status is precarious — there is essentially nowhere else it is known to occur.
Feeding
Like rainbowfishes generally, Axelrod's rainbowfish is an omnivore, though FishBase places it at a low trophic level of about 2.9 — toward the herbivorous end of the family's range. Allen's early observations (1980) recorded a diet of mainly filamentous algae, which the fish scrapes from hard surfaces with villiform teeth that extend around the lips. To that algal staple it adds the usual rainbowfish fare of small animal foods: ants and other terrestrial insects falling onto the water, aquatic insect larvae, and small crustaceans.
In a tank it should behave as its relatives do — feeding readily in the upper and middle water column, taking good-quality flake and small pellets along with frozen and live foods. Given the algae-heavy wild diet, lean toward plenty of vegetable matter and grazing opportunity. This is a rare fish, seldom held in numbers, so feeding notes specific to C. axelrodi are scant; husbandry is best extrapolated from the well-documented needs of the family as a whole.
Mating
Like the rest of the family, Axelrod's rainbowfish is an egg-scattering spawner with the pronounced courtship dimorphism rainbowfishes are known for. Males — larger, deeper-bodied and brighter — do the displaying, intensifying in colour to court females. In the wild, spawning is seasonal, concentrated between October and January.
Expect courtship and spawning to peak in the early hours after first light, a receptive female trailing a displaying male into fine vegetation to release eggs. Since rainbowfish males display hardest in front of rivals, the species is probably at its most colourful when several males are kept together — the general pattern across the family — though behavioural studies of C. axelrodi in particular are scarce.
Breeding
Breeding follows the standard rainbowfish pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved vegetation, no parental care. Field observations give a spawning season of October to January, during which a female produces on the order of 50–150 eggs spread over several days rather than in one clutch — the protracted, drip-feeding spawning style the family is known for.
In aquarium terms it comes down to the familiar approach. Conditioned adults deposit small, adhesive eggs that attach by fine filaments to fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, or to synthetic spawning mops; move the mops to a separate container to hatch, since the adults eat both eggs and fry. Captive-breeding accounts specific to C. axelrodi are limited because the species has so rarely been available, so the method above leans on its reported wild breeding and the well-established practice for its relatives.
In the aquarium
In practice this is a specialist's fish, not a general-hobby one: it has been scarce in the trade since its original collection, when most of the first imports died shortly after arrival. Where it is kept, treat it as a typical small-to-medium rainbowfish — active, peaceful, sociable, happiest in a group, with a male-skewed or balanced mix so the males display against one another and hold their colour.
Match the water to where it comes from: warm, near-neutral to slightly alkaline, not the soft-water default so often assumed for tropical fish. The type-locality readings — about 82 °F and pH near 7.8 — fit FishBase's 81–86 °F range. Give it a long, open swimming lane, good filtration and stable conditions, as you would any rainbowfish. Tankmates should be similarly sized, peaceful, and quick enough not to be outcompeted at feeding. No diseases specific to the Melanotaeniidae are known, so general rainbowfish care applies; the real obstacle to keeping this one is simply finding it.
Conservation
Chilatherina axelrodi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 6 December 2019. The listing is driven by the species' extremely restricted range: it is known from a single small stream, the Yungkiri Stream in the Bewani Mountains, giving it a tiny area of occupancy and no outlying populations to buffer against local decline or habitat change. CITES and CMS list the species as Not Evaluated.
A fish confined to one rainforest tributary has little slack against disturbance of that catchment — logging, sedimentation, or non-native fishes introduced anywhere in the Pual system could hit the entire known population at once. Unlike the more widely traded rainbowfishes, C. axelrodi is not backed by a large captive hobby population, having been rare in aquaria from the outset; its survival rests almost entirely on one wild stream. Further field survey, to confirm whether it occurs more widely in the Pual drainage, would do most to firm up its status.
