Glossolepis dorityi is a little-known rainbowfish from one small round lake in the lowlands of northern West Papua, Indonesia. Described in 2001 and named for the American missionary who first collected it, it holds one of the most restricted ranges of any rainbowfish. That confinement to a single 4-to-5-hectare waterbody is why the IUCN lists it as Critically Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Glossolepis dorityi was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 2001, in a paper published in the rainbowfish-focused journal Fishes of Sahul (Allen, G.R., 2001. A new species of rainbowfish (Glossolepis: Melanotaeniidae) from Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Fishes of Sahul 15(3): 766–775). The type material came from a small lake in the Grime (Grimé) River drainage of what was then Irian Jaya and is now the Indonesian province of West Papua. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Glossolepis dorityi Allen, 2001; because the species was described in Glossolepis, where it remains, the authority carries no parentheses.

The genus name Glossolepis combines the Greek glossa, tongue, with lepis, scale. The specific epithet honours Dan Dority, an American missionary working in New Guinea who collected the type specimens. The hobby knows it under three names — Dority's Rainbowfish, the Zig-Zag Rainbowfish, and the Grime Rainbowfish — the last two pointing respectively to its markings and to the river system it comes from.

Allen placed G. dorityi close to two other New Guinea members of the genus, Glossolepis leggetti and Glossolepis multisquamata. Glossolepis is a small genus of New Guinea rainbowfishes within the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes, which range across New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia.

Morphology

A small rainbowfish, with the largest recorded specimens reaching about 4.5 in in standard length. Like the rest of the family it is laterally compressed and carries the divided dorsal fin — a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior one — though meristic and proportional data beyond the original description are thin.

The name Zig-Zag Rainbowfish points to its patterning, but well-documented colour descriptions are scarce in the literature, and colour intensity in rainbowfishes depends heavily on mood and condition: a displaying male flushes far brighter than a stressed or subordinate one. Fine morphological detail for the species is data-sparse. It is best identified by its origin in the Grime River system rather than by colour alone, which overlaps with related Glossolepis.

Habitat

The type locality is Lake Nenggwambu, a small round lake of roughly 4 to 5 hectares about 31 mi west of the better-known Lake Sentani in northern West Papua. The species is known only from the Grime (Grimé) River system and its tributaries in this corner of northwestern New Guinea — a single drainage, centred on one little lake.

It works the whole water column, from near the surface down to the bottom, in shallow water of roughly 1 to 1.5 metres' depth; FishBase records a depth range of 0–3 ft. At the type locality G. dorityi was the most abundant fish present, sharing the lake with a banded variety of another rainbowfish, Chilatherina fasciata.

Water chemistry was not measured in detail at description, but the type locality is inferred to be hard and alkaline, pH above 7 — in line with several other Glossolepis habitats. The lake sits in a tropical lowland setting, and the fish is freshwater and benthopelagic throughout its narrow range.

Feeding

Allen recorded no natural diet in the original description, so feeding habits are inferred from the genus and family rather than observed. Like other Glossolepis and rainbowfishes generally, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore. FishBase places it at a low trophic level of about 2.8, which fits a diet weighted toward small invertebrates and plant or algal material.

Rainbowfishes of this group carry villiform teeth that extend around the lips, suited to scraping algae and biofilm off hard submerged surfaces. So the likely diet pairs grazed algae with ants and other terrestrial insects taken from the surface, aquatic insect larvae, and small crustaceans — reasonable inferences from close relatives, not direct records for G. dorityi.

Mating

No courtship records exist for Glossolepis dorityi, so what follows is the genus-typical behaviour of New Guinea rainbowfishes, which is well documented. These are egg-scattering plant spawners with no parental care. The female selects a male, the pair align side by side and quiver together, then release eggs and sperm at the same moment before darting apart, scattering the fertilised eggs into vegetation.

Between breeding males the behaviour is mostly stylized display rather than damaging aggression — the flaring and colour-flashing seen across the family, where rivals signal without serious fighting. Display is most vivid when several males are present, so these rainbowfishes are at their most colourful and most reproductively active in groups, not as isolated pairs.

Breeding

No direct breeding observations exist for Glossolepis dorityi, so this account is genus-typical. The eggs carry sticky filaments that catch in plants, where they sit until hatching after roughly 5 to 11 days into well-formed larvae with only a small yolk sac. Spawning is not one big event but a drawn-out one: related species lay on the order of 40 to 100 viable eggs a day — occasionally up to around 200 — over several consecutive days across a spawning period of about two weeks, peaking around the wet season.

Life-history figures, again from close relatives, put maturity at roughly six months. Lifespan runs to about four years in the wild and perhaps eight in captivity. FishBase rates the species' resilience as medium, with an estimated population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years and low fishing vulnerability. Like other rainbowfishes, the adults give no parental care and will eat their own eggs, so in the aquarium the eggs or spawning media have to be separated for the fry to survive.

In the aquarium

Glossolepis dorityi has reached the hobby in both Europe and North America, though it stays uncommon. It is reported as a mid- to surface-dwelling fish that shows little aggression beyond the harmless display breeding males aim at one another — a peaceable, active community rainbowfish.

Given the inferred hard, alkaline water of its native lake, aim for neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard water in the tank, kept warm to match its lowland New Guinea origins. Keep it as a group so the males colour up against one another, and give it open swimming space — it is a busy swimmer. No hybridising with other species has been recorded, and no feral populations have established outside its native range despite its presence in the trade. Species-specific care data remain sparse, so husbandry is extrapolated from the better-known Glossolepis and Melanotaenia.

Conservation

Glossolepis dorityi is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B2ab(v). The listing rides almost entirely on the species' tiny range: a single locality — a 4-to-5-hectare lake and the immediate Grime River drainage — gives it a very small extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, with no outlying population to buffer a local decline.

A fish this narrowly endemic has almost no resilience to habitat change, pollution, or the introduction of non-native species into its one lake system. It is harmless to humans and is not evaluated under CITES or CMS, but its outlook rests entirely on the integrity of that single small waterbody. Its presence in the hobby in Europe and North America offers a measure of ex-situ persistence, yet the wild population's fate is tied to the protection of Lake Nenggwambu and the Grime system. Current monitoring data are sparse, and the precautionary CR listing reflects how fragile a single-locality range is.
