Taxonomy & naming
Glossolepis leggetti was described by Gerald R. Allen and Samuel J. Renyaan in 1998, in a paper presenting three new species of rainbowfishes from Irian Jaya (now the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua), published in the journal aqua, Journal of Ichthyology and Aquatic Biology. The type material came from the Wapoga River system in the northern lowlands of what was then Irian Jaya. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Glossolepis leggetti Allen & Renyaan, 1998; because the species was described in Glossolepis, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.
The genus Glossolepis sits within the family Melanotaeniidae, the rainbowfishes and their blue-eye relatives, in the order Atheriniformes. Glossolepis is a New Guinea genus, smaller and less species-rich than its sister genus Melanotaenia, and includes the well-known red rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisus) of Lake Sentani. The genus name combines the Greek glossa, 'tongue', with lepis, 'scale'. The specific epithet leggetti is a patronym honouring Ray Leggett (born 1936) of Brisbane, Queensland, an Australian aquarist-naturalist recognised for his contributions to the knowledge of the freshwater fishes of the Australia-New Guinea region.
Morphology
Leggett's rainbowfish is a small to moderately sized rainbowfish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 3.5 in SL based on the original description, and the Australian live-import risk analysis gives an adult size range of roughly 2–3.5 in — placing it among the more compact members of the genus rather than the deep-bodied giants like the red rainbowfish.
In body plan it shows the characteristic rainbowfish architecture: a laterally compressed body and the divided dorsal fin typical of the family, with a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal. Recorded meristics from the description are dorsal spines 4 to 8, dorsal soft rays 9 to 13, a single anal spine, and anal soft rays 19 to 23. Detailed life-colour notes for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and FishBase carries no photograph; as in most rainbowfishes, adult males are likely the more colourful and deeper-bodied sex, but its breeding coloration is not documented here. Better to say the data are sparse than to guess.
Habitat
Glossolepis leggetti is known only from the northern lowlands of Indonesian Papua. FishBase records it from the Wapoga River system of northern Irian Jaya, and the Australian risk analysis adds that it has been found at one location in the Wapoga River and three locations in the Tiawiwa River, west of Papua province near the West Papua border — a very small documented range.
The species inhabits relatively clear, deep, and quiet pools within these river systems. Recorded water conditions from collection and assessment data describe a freshwater, tropical, benthopelagic fish with a fairly broad chemistry tolerance for the region: pH spanning roughly 6.0 to 8.4 and water temperatures from about 26.2 to 30.7 degrees Celsius, with salinity below 1 part per thousand (strictly freshwater). The Wapoga is a remote, species-dense lowland catchment; predators recorded alongside it include the Papuan black bass (Lutjanus goldiei) and the spot-tailed bass (Lutjanus fuscescens). Distribution data for the species cross-reference the Mack and Alonso 2000 rapid biological assessment of the Wapoga River area.
Feeding
No diet study exists specifically for Leggett's rainbowfish, but its feeding ecology can be inferred from the genus and family, which are well studied. Rainbowfishes are opportunistic omnivores, taking algae, ants and other terrestrial insects that fall to the water, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and plant matter. Many rainbowfishes carry villiform teeth that extend around the lips, used to scrape algae and biofilm from hard surfaces. The species' recorded trophic level is about 2.9, consistent with an omnivore that leans toward small invertebrates and algae rather than a predatory diet.
The Australian risk analysis notes that the species is believed to occupy mid-water habitats and to feed there rather than as a dedicated bottom feeder, and that it is not predatory or aggressive. In an aquarium setting it would be expected to behave like other small rainbowfishes — an active, mid-water grazer that accepts a varied diet of small prepared foods, frozen and live invertebrates such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, and some vegetable matter — though specific captive-feeding records for this species are limited.
Mating
Specific courtship and spawning behaviour for Glossolepis leggetti has not been documented in the accessible literature; the breeding ecology of this species in the wild is recorded as unknown. What can responsibly be said comes from the well-established patterns of the genus and family rather than from direct observation of this fish.
Rainbowfishes are egg-scattering, plant-spawning fishes with no parental care. In the group generally, males court females with colour displays — often most intense in the early morning — and a receptive female follows a displaying male into fine vegetation to release small numbers of adhesive eggs at a time. Whether Leggett's rainbowfish conforms in detail to this pattern is plausible but not confirmed here, so it is treated as inferred from relatives rather than established for the species.
Breeding
As with mating behaviour, the breeding biology of Glossolepis leggetti is not specifically documented, and the data are sparse. General rainbowfish life-history figures provide the available context: rainbowfishes typically reach maturity at around six months of age, live roughly four years in the wild, and can reach up to about eight years in captivity. The species shows medium resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years.
By the pattern of the family, the species would be expected to be an egg-depositing spawner whose adhesive eggs attach by fine filaments to fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, hatching after roughly a week to a fortnight depending on temperature, with no parental care and a need for very small first foods for the fry. These expectations are extrapolated from related rainbowfishes rather than recorded for Leggett's rainbowfish itself, and no captive-breeding account specific to the species is available in the cached sources.
In the aquarium
Leggett's rainbowfish is not an established aquarium species. It was the subject of a 2017 preliminary live-import risk analysis by the Australian Government department responsible for the environment, which assessed whether the species could be safely imported for the ornamental trade; this indicates interest in the fish for aquaria but not a history of widespread keeping. No feral populations of the species have been established outside its natural range, although a congener — the red rainbowfish, Glossolepis incisus — has long been established in the Australian ornamental trade.
Where the species has been or might be kept, its requirements can be inferred from its habitat and from rainbowfish husbandry generally. The recorded wild parameters — pH around 6.0 to 8.4 and temperatures of roughly 26 to 31 degrees Celsius — suggest a warm-water fish tolerant of a fairly wide chemistry range. A small, peaceful mid-water schooler, it would do best in a group in a planted tank with open swimming space and gentle current, alongside similarly sized, mild-tempered tankmates. Because direct husbandry records are limited, these notes should be read as reasonable extrapolation rather than tested aquarium practice.
Conservation
Glossolepis leggetti is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 3 December 2019 (Red List version 2025-2, Global assessment; IUCN species ID 161080708). The species is not listed on CITES and not on the Convention on Migratory Species.
The Least Concern listing should be read against the fish's narrow documented range — a single river system with a handful of known localities — but also against the remoteness and relative inaccessibility of the northern Papuan lowlands, which limit human pressure on the habitat. FishBase notes the species is of no fisheries interest and is harmless to humans, with a low vulnerability to fishing. As a fish that is little collected, little kept, and living in a sparsely developed catchment, it currently faces no major identified threats, though the same factors that keep it safe — remoteness and obscurity — also mean its population is poorly monitored.
