The spotted rainbowfish is one of the smaller, more obscure members of its genus — a slender, sub-5-centimetre fish from the high-altitude swamps and creeks of the Markham and Ramu river systems of Papua New Guinea. Its showier relatives, like the red rainbowfish, are trade staples; Glossolepis maculosa is barely kept and barely documented. The IUCN lists it as Endangered, on the strength of a narrow, fragmented range.

Taxonomy & naming

Glossolepis maculosa was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 1981. It belongs to the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes of New Guinea and Australia, and to the genus Glossolepis, a New Guinea radiation that includes the well-known red rainbowfish, Glossolepis incisus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Glossolepis maculosa Allen, 1981; because the species was described in Glossolepis, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.

The genus name combines the Greek glossa, 'tongue', with lepis, 'scale', a nod to the tongue dentition and scalation of the group. The specific epithet maculosa is Latin for 'spotted', after the fish's patterning — and the source of its English name. The species sits in the order Atheriniformes alongside the other rainbowfishes and silversides; FishBase carries it under SpecCode 10478. As with most rainbowfishes, Glossolepis species are told apart more reliably by colour, body proportions, and geography than by hard meristic counts, which overlap broadly across the genus.

Morphology

Glossolepis maculosa is a small rainbowfish, reaching about 2 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a family whose members are mostly hand-sized or smaller, and well short of the 12-or-more centimetres reached by its relative the red rainbowfish. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the typical rainbowfish manner, carrying the family's divided dorsal fin: a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior one. Recorded fin counts are 6 to 7 dorsal spines and 9 to 10 dorsal soft rays, with a single anal spine and 18 to 20 anal soft rays.

Colour descriptions of this species are sparse. What references exist stress its small size and spotted patterning — the basis of the name maculosa — rather than the saturated block colours that made some of its congeners famous. The genus rule should hold: breeding males the more colourful, deeper-bodied sex, intensifying their pattern in display, females and juveniles plainer. But the published detail is thin, and claims beyond the recorded meristics and the general genus pattern should be treated cautiously.

Habitat

The spotted rainbowfish is endemic to the Markham and Ramu river systems on the northern side of Papua New Guinea, between roughly 4 and 6 degrees south. It skips the main river channels for high-altitude swamps and creeks, at elevations of about 150 to 800 metres — a comparatively cool, upland setting for a tropical lowland-country fish, and a habitat type that is naturally patchy and easily disturbed.

Recorded water parameters are warm but not hot, and distinctly alkaline: about 23 to 27 degrees Celsius, pH 7.5 to 7.8, and hard water of 12 dH or more. These benthopelagic fish keep to the still and slow-flowing margins of swamps and small creeks. A range split across just two river systems, riding on scattered upland swamp-and-creek habitat — that is the central fact of the species' biology, and the reason its conservation outlook is precarious.

Feeding

No dietary studies exist for Glossolepis maculosa, but its placement and ecology point to the omnivorous, micro-predatory habits of small rainbowfishes. FishBase records a trophic level of about 2.9 — a diet dominated by small animal prey (aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans), eked out with algae and plant matter grazed off submerged surfaces. It feeds mainly in the upper and middle water column, as the family usually does.

In captivity it should behave like other small rainbowfishes: an undemanding, willing feeder that takes good flake and small pellets alongside frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and Cyclops. Since the fish is little kept, this is extrapolated from close relatives rather than drawn from any body of aquarium reports.

Mating

Glossolepis maculosa is an egg-layer, and like the rest of its genus it is taken to be an egg-scatterer that spawns over fine vegetation with no parental care. Its courtship has not been observed in the wild, so the account here rests on the family's consistent reproductive pattern.

In rainbowfishes, courtship is a morning affair. Dominant males stake out display areas among plants and work the females with colour and fin displays, often flashing a pale 'courtship band' along the head and nape. A receptive female follows a displaying male into fine-leaved vegetation to spawn. Males show off hardest with rivals around, so this species is probably, like its relatives, at its most active and colourful when several are kept together — though for so little-documented a fish, that is an inference from genus behaviour, not a recorded fact.

Breeding

Breeding follows the general rainbowfish template: a plant-spawning egg-layer that deposits small adhesive eggs, hung by fine filaments from fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with the adults offering no care and happy to eat their own eggs. Hobbyist notes — forum-grade, read with caution — suggest that, as with other Glossolepis, getting adults to spawn is not the hard part. The fry are.

That tracks the family pattern: newly hatched rainbowfish larvae are tiny, hang near the surface, and need very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or a commercial liquid fry food — before they can manage newly hatched brine shrimp. Family eggs typically hatch after a week or more at breeding temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius. With dedicated breeding accounts for this species scarce, breeders should expect to adapt techniques proven on better-known small rainbowfishes.

In the aquarium

You rarely see Glossolepis maculosa in the hobby, and there is little husbandry literature specific to it; what guidance exists is extrapolated from its recorded wild parameters and from keeping related small rainbowfishes. At around 2 in it does not need the long swimming lanes the bigger Glossolepis and Melanotaenia demand, but as an active, sociable shoaler it still wants a group and open water to move in.

Match its hard, alkaline upland origins, not the soft-water tropical default: neutral to alkaline water around pH 7.5 to 7.8, hardness of 12 dH or more, temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius. FishBase cites preferred aquarium conditions of about pH 7.8, hardness 12, and 25 degrees Celsius. Stable water and good filtration matter more than hitting the numbers exactly. Given its rarity in the trade and its threatened wild status, treat any stock as a conservation responsibility — keep it to maintain and breed it, not as a casual community fish.

Conservation

Glossolepis maculosa is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), a geographic-range criterion that reflects a small and fragmented extent of occurrence together with a continuing decline in the quality of the species' habitat. The assessment was made on 5 December 2019 (IUCN species ID 9269).

That vulnerability falls straight out of its biology. The fish is confined to scattered high-altitude swamps and creeks across just the Markham and Ramu systems, a naturally patchy habitat with little buffer against disturbance. A narrow upland specialist has scant resilience to habitat degradation, and there is no large outlying population to soak up local losses. It carries minor commercial and aquarium-trade interest, but its rarity in captivity means the hobby offers little of the safety net — widespread tank breeding — that cushions some of its better-known relatives. Sourcing and keeping captive stock responsibly, and backing habitat protection in its restricted New Guinea range, are the practical levers.
