Rheocles pellegrini is one of the most shadowy members of the Madagascar rainbowfishes — a small Bedotiid silverside known, as far as the literature records, from little more than its original type material. Endemic to the forested streams of Madagascar's northeast, around Andapa, it went unrecorded for decades after its 1930s collection before specimens turned up again in the type region in recent years. The IUCN lists it as Data Deficient — a verdict that says less about the fish than about how little anyone has been able to learn of it.

Taxonomy & naming

Rheocles pellegrini was described in 1931 by the American ichthyologists John Treadwell Nichols and Francesca La Monte, working from material collected on the northeast coast of Madagascar. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid name as Rheocles pellegrini (Nichols & La Monte, 1931); the parenthetical authority reflects that the species has been combined with the genus Rheocles since its original description in a different genus. The species belongs to the family Bedotiidae, the Madagascar rainbowfishes, a small endemic radiation within the order Atheriniformes (the silversides) confined to the fresh waters of Madagascar.

The genus name Rheocles comes from the Greek rheos, stream or current — fitting for fishes that live in flowing water. The epithet pellegrini honours Dr Jacques Pellegrin (1873–1944), the French zoologist whose work on African and Malagasy freshwater fishes shaped the field. The principal taxonomic reference for the species in the modern literature remains Maugé's 1986 treatment of the Atherinidae in the Check-list of the Freshwater Fishes of Africa (CLOFFA).

Beyond the original description and these catalogue entries, documented material is sparse. FishBase notes that the species 'seems to be known only by the type specimen,' which leaves much of its biology a matter of inference from better-studied relatives in the genus rather than direct observation.

Morphology

Rheocles pellegrini is a small fish, with a recorded maximum length of about 3 in SL. In overall form it follows the Bedotiid plan: a slender, laterally compressed, silvery body of the kind shared across the Madagascar rainbowfishes and the wider silverside lineage, built for moving water near the surface and mid-column.

Morphological and meristic data specific to R. pellegrini are sparse in the accessible literature, which follows directly from how little material exists. The features that would normally distinguish a Rheocles species — fin-ray counts, scale rows, and the colour pattern of breeding males — are not well documented here, and this article does not assert characters that the sources do not support.

The genus-level picture is firmer: Rheocles are modestly sized, stream-dwelling rainbowfishes whose males, in several species, develop heightened fin colour in breeding condition against an otherwise silvery ground. Whether R. pellegrini shows comparable nuptial colour is not recorded in the material at hand.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Madagascar. The single known locality was given by Nichols and LaMonte (1931) as 'one day west of Andapa' — an inland forest-stream site in the northeast of the island, in the Andapa region rather than on the coast itself — where the original specimens were collected during the Archbold Expedition. Subsequent specimens have been taken from this same region in recent decades. Like its congeners, R. pellegrini is a freshwater, stream-associated fish — the genus name itself points to flowing water — and the IUCN describes the genus Rheocles as ecologically restricted to heavily forested streams.

Madagascar's eastern drainages, where the Bedotiid rainbowfishes reach their greatest diversity, are typically clear, well-oxygenated rainforest streams and rivers running off the island's humid eastern escarpment. Precise water chemistry, depth, and flow data for R. pellegrini are not available in the sources consulted, so no figures are given here; the habitat is best described at the level of the forested stream systems around Andapa.

The single-region distribution is the most consequential fact about the fish. A species confined to a small part of one island's drainage network has almost no documented spatial extent — which is exactly what makes its status so hard to assess.

Rainbowfishes of this build typically take small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and surface-fallen insects — from the upper water column of the streams they inhabit.

In the absence of species-specific data, the diet is described here only at this general level. The genus's stream-surface foraging habit and small mouth are the safest guides to what R. pellegrini is likely to eat, but no captive or field feeding record is asserted.

Mating

There is no documented account of courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Rheocles pellegrini in the sources consulted, and this section does not invent one. The fish's reproductive habits are inferred only from the general pattern of the Bedotiidae.

Madagascar rainbowfishes are egg-laying fishes that, like other rainbowfishes and silversides, attach adhesive eggs to vegetation or other fine substrate, with males displaying to females in flowing or still margins of streams. Whether R. pellegrini follows this pattern in detail — and what, if any, nuptial display its males perform — is not recorded.

Given how little material exists, even the basic timing and triggers of breeding (season, temperature cues, courtship signals) remain unknown for this species. The honest summary is that its mating biology is undescribed.

Breeding

Breeding data for Rheocles pellegrini are effectively absent. The species is not established in the aquarium hobby, and there is no published captive-breeding account in the accessible literature.

By analogy with other Bedotiid rainbowfishes, it is reasonable to expect an egg-scattering, plant-attaching reproductive mode with adhesive eggs and no parental care — the standard pattern across the family and the silversides more broadly. Eggs in this group typically hang from fine-leaved plants or roots by filaments and hatch after a period of days to a couple of weeks depending on temperature.

These expectations are offered strictly as genus-level context, not as observations of R. pellegrini. No clutch size, incubation period, or fry-rearing detail is available for the species, and none is asserted here.

In the aquarium

Rheocles pellegrini is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is not present in the ornamental trade, and there is no body of hobbyist husbandry experience for it; it is a wild Malagasy endemic of no commercial interest, recorded only from a single remote forest-stream region.

For this reason no care recommendations are given. Where some other Malagasy rainbowfishes (notably Bedotia species) have made limited appearances in specialist aquaria, R. pellegrini has not, and any keeping advice would be pure speculation extrapolated from relatives.

What an aquarist can take from this species is context, not a stocking plan. Madagascar's endemic freshwater fauna includes fishes so poorly known that they enter the literature once and then vanish from it — which is exactly why captive-breeding and conservation programmes for the better-documented Malagasy rainbowfishes matter.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Rheocles pellegrini as Data Deficient (DD), assessed on 23 June 2016 (current assessment published in 2020). The Data Deficient category does not mean the species is secure; it means there is not enough information to judge its risk of extinction. For much of the twentieth century the fish was known only from its 1930s type material — older FishBase notes even raise the possibility that it is 'a species which might have disappeared' — but the current IUCN assessment records that additional specimens have been collected from the region of the type locality within the past decade, and that subpopulations there 'are extant and appear relatively stable.' What remains lacking is data on habitat quality and population size, which is why the species is still listed as Data Deficient rather than placed in a threat category.

That concern sits within a grim regional picture. According to IUCN assessments, more than half of Madagascar's native freshwater fishes are threatened — on the order of 50 of roughly 97 native species, and a similar share of the island's endemics. The Bedotiid rainbowfishes, Rheocles and Bedotia, are among the hardest hit, pressured by deforestation and the resulting sedimentation of their clear-water streams, and by introduced fishes that prey on or compete with the natives.

For a narrowly endemic, stream-restricted species already known from almost nothing, those pressures are acute: there is no large outlying population to buffer local losses, and no monitoring to detect them. The realistic conservation priority for R. pellegrini is basic — targeted survey work to establish whether the species still exists at all, before its status can be meaningfully reassessed.
