Taxonomy & naming
Rheocles wrightae was described by Melanie L. J. Stiassny in 1990 as part of her work on the freshwater fishes of Madagascar, a fauna she did much to revise. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Rheocles wrightae Stiassny, 1990; because the species was described in Rheocles, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used. The genus sits in the family Bedotiidae, the Madagascan rainbowfishes, within the order Atheriniformes (the silversides and their allies).
The Bedotiidae are an endemic Madagascan radiation of two genera, Bedotia and Rheocles. Their nearest relatives lie outside Madagascar, and the family is read as a relict lineage that diversified in isolation on the island's eastern drainages. Rheocles is the more poorly known of the two genera. Several of its species were described only recently, and a number — R. wrightae among them — are known from scant material and a single locality or two. Stiassny and Raminosoa's 1994 account, 'The fishes of the inland waters of Madagascar,' remains the principal reference for the species.
The genus name Rheocles derives from the Greek rheos, a stream or current, reflecting the flowing-water habitats these fishes occupy. The specific epithet wrightae is a patronym honouring Dr. Patricia Chapple Wright, the American primatologist whose long fieldwork in Madagascar contributed to the study and conservation of the island's biota.
Morphology
A small, slender, laterally compressed rainbowfish. FishBase reports a maximum recorded length of about 3.5 in standard length — a modest-sized member of the family. As in other Bedotiidae, the body is elongate with the divided dorsal fin of the rainbowfish-type body plan, built for life in flowing stream water.
