Rheocles vatosoa is a small, jewel-bright rainbowfish in the family Bedotiidae, the Madagascar rainbowfishes — a lineage found nowhere else. Described in 2002 from the Lokoho River basin in northeastern Madagascar, it is known from only a handful of clear hill streams near the town of Andapa, and the IUCN lists it as Endangered. The name is literal: vatosoa is the Malagasy word for a gemstone, given for the fish's coloration.

Taxonomy & naming

Rheocles vatosoa was described by Melanie L. J. Stiassny, Maria del Rosario Castañeda Rodriguez and Paul V. Loiselle in 2002, in the journal Cybium (26(1): 71–77). The type material was collected in the Lokoho River basin of northeastern Madagascar. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Rheocles vatosoa Stiassny, Rodriguez & Loiselle, 2002; the species was described in Rheocles and remains there, so no parenthetical authority is used.

The genus Rheocles belongs to the family Bedotiidae, the Madagascar rainbowfishes, an endemic radiation within the order Atheriniformes. The family is confined to the freshwaters of Madagascar — one of several old, narrowly distributed lineages that set the island's fish fauna apart. The original description separates R. vatosoa from its congeners by a combination of characters: it possesses a single interdorsal pterygiophore (versus three in other members of the genus), a shorter upper jaw and no black pigment on the genital papilla (separating it from R. sikorae and R. wrightae), full squamation of the nape and chest (versus R. pellegrini and R. derhami), a shorter caudal peduncle (versus R. lateralis), and irregular predorsal scale rows with a longer anal-fin base (versus R. alaotrensis).

The specific epithet vatosoa is a Malagasy noun in apposition meaning crystal or gemstone, chosen for the fish's coloration. The generic name Rheocles comes from the Greek rheos, a stream or current — a nod to the flowing-water habitats these fishes favour.

Morphology

Rheocles vatosoa is a small bedotiid, reaching about 3 in in standard length in the type series. The body is elongate with an oval cross-section, the typical build of a stream-dwelling rainbowfish that holds position in moving water.

Meristic counts from the original description place the dorsal fin with 5 to 7 spines and 11 to 15 soft rays, the anal fin with a single spine and 14 to 18 soft rays, and the vertebral count at 35 to 38. As in other members of the genus, the dorsal fin is divided into a short spinous portion and a longer soft-rayed portion. The single interdorsal pterygiophore — the bony support between the two dorsal portions — is a diagnostic internal character separating this species from its congeners, which carry three.

The coloration that earned the species its name is its most striking external feature, though published accounts of the live pattern are thin. The fish is reported as jewel-bright in life; descriptions of breeding versus non-breeding coloration are not well documented in the accessible literature.

Habitat

Rheocles vatosoa is endemic to the Lokoho River basin in northeastern Madagascar, where it has been collected in the upper and middle reaches of the river near the town of Andapa. It is a fish of clear, flowing hill streams, recorded over substrates of gravel and coarse sand, and it occurs both in rapidly flowing rivers and in small brooks.

The water chemistry of these streams is soft and ranges from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline. Measured conditions include total and carbonate hardness below 1 dGH and pH values between roughly 6.8 and 7.5 — the very soft, low-mineral water typical of rainforest catchments draining the humid northeastern highlands of Madagascar. Such streams run clear and well-oxygenated, and the fish's elongate body suits holding position in current.

The restricted range — a single river basin in a region under pressure from deforestation and land conversion — is the central fact of its conservation status. A narrowly endemic stream fish has little geographic buffer against local habitat change.

Feeding

Rheocles vatosoa is an opportunistic insectivore. Examination of stomach contents in the type series found them filled almost exclusively with macerated insect remains, the great majority of terrestrial origin, together with a few aquatic insect larvae. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 2.6, consistent with a diet dominated by invertebrates.

The heavy share of terrestrial insects points to a fish that takes much of its food from prey dropping onto the surface from streamside vegetation — common among small stream fishes under forest cover, where canopy input matters. The aquatic larvae taken alongside this surface drift show it also forages in the water column and along the bottom.

No dietary studies beyond the original description were located, so the picture rests on the type-series stomach contents; finer detail on seasonal or ontogenetic diet shifts is not available.

Mating

Courtship and mating in Rheocles vatosoa have not been described in the accessible literature. The species is poorly known biologically beyond its original description and a handful of conservation-driven captive observations.

By analogy with other bedotiids, Rheocles are expected to be egg-depositing spawners that attach adhesive eggs to vegetation or other substrates, with males displaying to females in the flowing or still margins of their streams. The specifics for R. vatosoa — pair formation, display, spawning triggers — are not documented and should not be assumed from relatives.

The species has been the subject of ex-situ conservation breeding (see Breeding and Conservation), so captive reproduction is achievable under managed conditions, even without a published account of its mating behaviour.

Breeding

Published breeding data for Rheocles vatosoa is sparse. The species is largely absent from the general aquarium trade, and no dedicated hobbyist breeding article was located; what is known about its reproduction comes chiefly from conservation programmes.

It is held in managed captive-breeding plans run by zoos and aquariums to safeguard a poorly known endangered Madagascar fish. That those programmes exist means R. vatosoa can be bred under controlled conditions — the practical basis for any ex-situ insurance population. Bedotiids are generally substrate or plant spawners with adhesive eggs and no parental care, and R. vatosoa is presumed to follow that pattern, but figures for egg number, incubation, and fry development are not in the consulted sources and are not asserted here.

For a narrow endemic, captive breeding matters beyond the hobby: it buffers against catastrophic loss in the wild and could supply any future reintroduction or population reinforcement.

In the aquarium

Rheocles vatosoa is rare in the aquarium hobby. It is not a commercial trade fish; the species is primarily known from its original scientific description and from conservation-oriented breeding programmes maintained by zoos and public aquariums. No dedicated hobbyist care or breeding profile was located, so detailed husbandry guidance specific to this species is not available, and this section is necessarily brief.

What can be inferred comes from the wild habitat, not from keeping experience. As a fish of clear, flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams, it would want cool-to-warm soft water — its native streams run very soft, hardness below 1 dGH, pH around 6.8 to 7.5 — with good current, high oxygen, and clean conditions. Those are the needs of a stream fish, not a still-water community rainbowfish.

Given its Endangered status and its place in managed conservation programmes, it should not be sought from the wild trade. Keeping it belongs within coordinated conservation breeding rather than general hobby commerce.

Conservation

Rheocles vatosoa is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v), with the assessment dated 23 June 2016. The listing reflects its very small extent of occurrence — a single river basin in northeastern Madagascar — together with inferred declines in the extent and quality of its habitat and in the number of mature individuals.

Madagascar's freshwater fishes are among the most threatened anywhere, pressured by deforestation, stream sedimentation, agricultural expansion, and introduced species. A stream fish confined to the Lokoho basin has essentially no outlying populations to fall back on if that one catchment degrades — which is what puts it in the Endangered category. It was assessed as part of the broader Red List effort covering Madagascar's freshwater fishes.

Ex-situ conservation softens the outlook: R. vatosoa is held in captive-breeding plans run by zoos and aquariums, which describe it as a poorly known endangered rainbowfish from Madagascar. Those managed populations buffer against loss in the wild and keep the species available for study and, potentially, future restoration — a real safeguard for a fish that exists in so few places.
