Aequidens diadema — the diadem or royal acara — is a modestly sized cichlid of the soft, tea-dark backwaters where the upper Rio Negro and the upper Orinoco interleave across the Brazil-Colombia-Venezuela frontier. Brassy and unassuming until display darkens its bars, it is named for a faint brown band drawn across the top of the head between the eyes, which the describer read as a crown. Its real distinction is reproductive. Where most of the genus spawns on open substrate and leaves it at that, Aequidens diadema carries the relationship a step further into the mouth: both parents gather the newly hatched larvae onto their tongues, a biparental, larvophilic form of delayed mouthbrooding rare among South American cichlids.

Taxonomy & naming

The Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel described this fish in 1840 as Acara diadema, in his landmark monograph on the new river fishes Johann Natterer had brought back from Brazil ("Johann Natterer's neue Flussfische Brasilien's", published in the Annalen des Wiener Museums der Naturgeschichte). The type material — syntypes catalogued as NMW 33791 in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien — came from a forest brook (an igarapé, given in Heckel's German as "einem Ygarapé oder Waldbache") near Marabitanas, a settlement on the upper Rio Negro close to the modern Brazil-Venezuela border. The genus Aequidens came later, erected by Carl H. Eigenmann and William L. Bray in 1894 as a subgenus of Astronotus; its name points to the even-sized teeth of the type species Aequidens tetramerus, in contrast to the enlarged front teeth of Astronotus. In the modern, restricted sense Aequidens holds roughly seventeen valid species across the Amazon-Orinoco-Guianas region and the La Plata basin, placed in the tribe Cichlasomatini of the Neotropical subfamily Cichlinae. Aequidens diadema is closely similar to — and historically confused with — the wide-ranging Aequidens tetramerus; both the IUCN assessment and FishBase flag the risk of mistaking the two, and FishBase notes that material reported as Aequidens diadema from Peru by Kullander (1986) belongs to a different species. Some literature and trade records under this name therefore need to be read with care.

Morphology

Aequidens diadema is a compact, ovoid, laterally compressed acara reaching about 4.5 in in standard length — the largest males in Kullander's 2003 checklist — though most aquarium and field fish run closer to 3–4 in. The ground colour is a warm brassy tan to grey-olive, scattered with iridescent blue-green flecks on the flanks and unpaired fins; many fish also carry a reddish or orange wash on the lower body and fins, the source of the "royal" and "orange acara" trade names. Two markings do the diagnostic work: a dark midlateral blotch on each flank, and the namesake brown band running between the eyes across the top of the head, which Heckel read as a diadem or crown. Like most acaras, the fish can switch its pattern abruptly — stressed or displaying, it throws up a set of bold dark vertical bars across the whole body, a quick mood signal that fades back to the plainer brassy dress once it settles. Sexual dimorphism is modest and mostly about size: dominant males grow larger and somewhat more robust, ripe females are deeper-bellied, and colour intensifies in both sexes during courtship and brooding. There is no dramatic finnage difference between the sexes, which is part of why keepers usually let a group pair off on its own rather than trying to sex individuals.

Habitat

The species occupies the upper Rio Negro drainage of the Amazon basin together with tributaries of the upper Orinoco, straddling Brazil (Amazonas and Roraima states), southern Venezuela, eastern Colombia and — depending on which records are accepted — adjacent Peru. This is classic blackwater country: water stained brown by tannins leaching from decomposing leaf litter, extremely soft and acidic, and poor in dissolved minerals. Field accounts place Aequidens diadema along slow or stagnant margins among submerged root tangles and drowned wood near the banks, over bottoms of sand mixed with peat, clay and leaf detritus, where it can bolt into cover when threatened. The in-situ chemistry runs strikingly soft and acidic — pH values from roughly 4.9 up toward neutral, very low hardness, and warm temperatures generally in the mid-20s Celsius (FishBase gives a 73–82 °F envelope). In the Jenaro Herrera region of Peru, fish referred to this species — with the caveat above about Peruvian identifications — have turned up in aguajal-type swamp streams, clearwater quebradas and small blackwater creeks. The IUCN places it in inland wetlands and rivers/streams and estimates an extent of occurrence around 1.86 million km²: a genuinely wide range, even if the fish is described as locally uncommon.

Feeding

Aequidens diadema is an omnivore with a carnivorous lean, foraging the bottom and lower water column of these leaf-littered backwaters. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.2, consistent with a diet built around small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae and other macroinvertebrates picked from the substrate and leaf litter — supplemented by plant and detrital matter. True to its acara build, it sifts and digs, taking mouthfuls of sand and fine debris and winnowing out the edible particles, a habit that makes it an inveterate redecorator of planted tanks. In aquaria it accepts the full omnivore range: frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp alongside good-quality flake and pellet. Vary the diet to hold wild-type colour. It is a generalist of the soft-sediment and leaf-litter zone, not a specialist on any one prey.

Mating

Outside of breeding the diadem acara is moderately peaceful and can share space with calm, similarly sized tankmates, but reproduction sharpens it considerably. It becomes territorial, and the territoriality bites hardest among its own kind: rival males in particular do not tolerate one another, and a contest between two can escalate into intense, sometimes lethal fighting, so keeping more than one male in a confined space is discouraged. Pairs form within a group and then jointly hold a territory, dividing the labour through courtship and spawning — keepers describe the male driving off intruders while the female works over the chosen surface, the two trading roles as she deposits and he follows. One repeatedly noted quirk of this species is its attachment to fallen leaves: collectors and breeders report that Aequidens diadema strongly prefers, and may even require, a mobile leaf substrate to spawn on, choosing a leaf over open rock or sand. As with many acaras the pair bond can be fragile under aquarium crowding, and aggression between a mismatched pair is a common reason spawnings fail.

Breeding

Reproduction is what sets this fish apart from its relatives. Aequidens diadema begins like a typical open substrate spawner — the female lays a clutch onto a chosen surface, characteristically a fallen leaf rather than rock, and both parents fan and guard the developing eggs, the male warding off intruders while the female tends the brood and the roles alternate between them. Once the eggs hatch, though, the pair does something most South American cichlids do not: both parents take the larvae up into their mouths, carrying and protecting the wrigglers there. That makes Aequidens diadema a biparental, larvophilic (delayed) mouthbrooder — it does not brood the eggs in the mouth like an African ovophile, but transfers the young only after hatching, a behaviour shared with just a handful of relatives such as Aequidens paloemeuensis and Aequidens pallidus and noted alike in FishBase, the IUCN account and the cichlid literature. Laying onto a portable leaf and then mouth-carrying the hatchlings lets the parents move a clutch through its most vulnerable stage even in cluttered, predator-rich blackwater. Aquarium breeding is rated moderate, and the levers are few: soft, acidic water (around pH 6 and roughly 75 °F), leaves to spawn on, and a settled, well-matched pair. Hard data are thin — FishBase carries no fecundity figure — but hobby accounts put a spawn at roughly 200-300 comparatively large eggs (about 0.5 in) laid on a chosen leaf. Precise fry-development timings for this species remain poorly documented, so read those numbers as hobby-reported rather than measured.

In the aquarium

Aequidens diadema is an intermediate-level cichlid: match its blackwater origins and it does well, but cut corners on water chemistry or space and it lets you know. It is not as forgiving as a blue acara (Andinoacara pulcher) or a keyhole cichlid, though far less demanding than a discus — an experienced cichlid keeper with a blackwater setup will find it relatively straightforward, while a complete beginner would do better starting elsewhere.

Tank: a single pair needs at least 30 US gal (roughly a 39.5 in footprint), with more appreciated once the pair spawns and defends a territory; raising a growout group of six to eight juveniles to let natural pair bonds form comfortably wants around 65 US gal. Filtration should be efficient but gentle — the slow, tannic backwaters this fish comes from carry almost no current, and heavy surface turbulence will stress it. Keep lighting dim, with floating plants or surface cover.

Water: aim for pH 5.5-6.8, total hardness below 5°dGH, and a temperature of 75–81 °F, mirroring the documented chemistry of the upper Rio Negro and upper Orinoco. Trade fish tolerate neutral water short-term, but colour stays flat and breeding rarely occurs above pH 7 in hard water; the soft-acid range is where the fish looks and breeds best.

Substrate & scaping: a sandy or fine-gravel base with a generous scattering of dried leaves — Indian almond (Catappa), oak or beech all work — gives both foraging habitat and the mobile spawning surface the fish prefer. Driftwood tangles and root sections add shelter and visual breaks, the difference between manageable aggression and a hounded female. Because it digs and sifts constantly, anchor rooted plants in pots or stick to epiphytes such as Anubias or Java fern tied to wood.

Tankmates: outside breeding it is moderately peaceful toward dissimilar species of comparable size — robust, peaceful tetras (Hyphessobrycon or Moenkhausia species that share blackwater conditions), small loricariid catfish and similarly sized eartheaters all coexist. Avoid anything small enough to be eaten, anything that resembles a rival acara enough to trigger territory disputes, and — emphatically — more than one male Aequidens diadema in the same tank unless the system is very large and densely structured.

Common mistakes: housing a lone pair in a bare or sparsely decorated tank, where the male can bully the female relentlessly before or between spawnings and she has nowhere to escape; and running tap water at neutral or alkaline pH and mid-range hardness, then wondering why the fish refuses to breed or loses colour. The soft-acid requirement is genuine and not negotiable for consistent success.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Aequidens diadema as Least Concern (assessed 29 October 2020 by R.G. Frederico, reviewed by T.J. Lyons, published 2023). The rationale is essentially geographic. Despite little information on the species' biology, population size or trend — which the assessment describes as unknown, with the fish apparently uncommon where it occurs — its very wide distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco basins, an estimated extent of occurrence near 1.86 million km², keeps it well clear of any threatened threshold. No specific threats are identified, and the species carries no CITES listing. It is taken for the ornamental aquarium trade, regulated in Brazil under IBAMA's normative instruction governing the harvest of native and exotic fishes for aquarium use, but the assessment does not flag this as a population-level concern. As with all Rio Negro and Orinoco endemics, the broader backdrop is the accelerating pressure on Amazonian freshwaters — deforestation, mining, damming and shifting flood regimes — none of it documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but all of it framing the long-term outlook for the soft-water habitats it depends on.
