Taxonomy & naming
The Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel described this fish in 1840 as Acara pallidus, in his account of the freshwater fishes Johann Natterer had collected in Brazil ('Johann Natterer's neue Flussfische Brasilien's'). The holotype is a single specimen about 2.5 in long, held today in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien as NMW 33678; its label reads only 'Brasil, Rio-negro,' which fixes the type locality on the Rio Negro. Synonyms accumulated over the next century — Centrarchus vittatus Jardine, 1843, and, more consequentially, Aequidens duopunctatus Haseman, 1911, described from Manaus and later synonymised by Kullander. Gill (1858) moved the species into Cichlasoma, and for decades it was repeatedly mistaken for the widespread Aequidens tetramerus. Kullander revalidated and recombined it as Aequidens pallidus in 1983, and its modern diagnosis rests on the redescription by Sven O. Kullander and Efrem J. G. Ferreira (1990, Zoologica Scripta), which pinned down its characters and separated it from a newly described relative, Aequidens tubicen of the Rio Trombetas. The genus itself, erected by Eigenmann & Bray in 1894, sits in the subfamily Cichlinae and the tribe Cichlasomatini, the Neotropical 'acaras'; its type species is Aequidens tetramerus, and its limits remain under active phylogenetic revision.
Morphology
Aequidens pallidus is a moderately large but relatively slim acara that reaches about 5.5 in (5.5 in) standard length. Kullander (2003) gives a maximum of 5.5 in, while FishBase cites roughly 8 in total length from a different source, so the reported maximum depends on how length was measured and which population was sampled. The body is fusiform rather than deep, with a triserial predorsal scale pattern, a fairly long pectoral fin (36.6–44.6% of standard length), 25–26 scales in the E1 row, and a high vertebral count of 14 + 13 = 27.
Colour pattern is what settles an identification. With its sister species Aequidens tubicen it shares three marks: a lateral band set high on the flank, a midlateral blotch placed well to the rear, and a broad light spot just ahead of the dark spot on the caudal peduncle. What separates it from Aequidens tubicen is a supraorbital spot, which Aequidens tubicen lacks, and an ordinary cheek spot where Aequidens tubicen carries a preopercular one; its rear lateral band also stays unbroken at every size. From the superficially similar Aequidens diadema it differs in a higher E1 scale count (25–26 versus 24), much narrower dark edges on the dorsal flank scales, and a midlateral spot set further back. The epithet 'pallidus' — pale — records the washed-out fins of the preserved holotype. Sexual differences are slight and poorly characterised: as in most acaras, mature males probably grow a little larger and develop more produced unpaired fins, but no one has studied the species closely enough to say so with confidence.
Habitat
The doublespot acara is endemic to the central Brazilian Amazon, in the state of Amazonas. It is widely distributed yet geographically hemmed in — the lower and middle Rio Negro plus a handful of neighbouring drainages, the Rio Uatumã, Rio Preto da Eva and Rio Puraquequara — and it is absent from the Rio Branco. Museum labels mention swamps and lakes, but in practice it turns up most often in running (lotic) water: along the margins of rapids, in fast- and slow-flowing forest streams, and in rocky pools. In the Rio Uatumã it was collected from pools stranded in the rapids after the Balbina dam closed and the river fell well below its usual low water. The Rio Preto da Eva site was a small, slow forest stream, while the nearby Igarapé Tarumãzinho was a swift one, and the fish is common in terra firme forest igarapés (Espírito-Santo et al. 2009). Matching these soft, tea-coloured waters, FishBase gives a pH of roughly 6.5–7.5, a temperature range of about 72–86 °F, and hardness up to around 10 dH; site-specific chemistry is otherwise thin in the literature.
Feeding
Aequidens pallidus is a benthopelagic omnivore that leans carnivorous, with an estimated trophic level near 3.2. The clearest dietary evidence comes from Rio Negro material: stomach analyses (Goulding, Carvalho & Ferreira 1988, reported in Kullander & Ferreira 1990) found that specimens had eaten chiefly fish and detritus. That puts it above the dedicated sediment-sifting eartheaters on the food web. It works instead as a generalist predator-scavenger, taking small fishes and other animal prey from the bottom and lower water column while also swallowing organic detritus. In the leaf-littered, low-productivity blackwater streams it favours, where prey is patchy and shifts with the seasons, that dietary flexibility earns its keep.
Mating
No one has documented pair formation or courtship in Aequidens pallidus in any detail; the species has never been the subject of a published reproductive study, and the little that appears in the aquarium literature is unreliable (see Breeding). What can be said is inferred from its place among the acaras of the tribe Cichlasomatini and from better-known relatives such as Aequidens tetramerus. On that basis it is expected to form monogamous pairs that hold and defend a spawning territory together, with the deepened, intensified breeding colours and the mutual territorial aggression typical of substrate-brooding acaras. That everyday territorial behaviour is easy enough to watch across the genus, but for Aequidens pallidus specifically there is no quantitative account of courtship, mate choice or territory size. The gap is real: much of what older hobby sources say about 'Aequidens duopunctata' pairing is now understood to describe misidentified fish.
Breeding
For all its decades in the aquarium trade, the reproduction of Aequidens pallidus is essentially undocumented. Kullander & Ferreira (1990) put it plainly: 'there are no reliable reports on its reproduction in captivity,' and the various accounts of breeding 'Aequidens duopunctatus' in the hobby literature 'seem to refer to misidentified Aequidens diadema and other similar species.' That misidentification is the root of a stubborn myth. Aequidens diadema is a documented biparental larvophilic — delayed — mouthbrooder: it spawns on a surface and, once the eggs hatch, both parents carry the wrigglers in their mouths, and that behaviour has been wrongly pinned on Aequidens pallidus. FishBase, working from the same reference that records the mouthbrooding of Aequidens diadema, states outright that Aequidens pallidus is not a larvophilic mouthbrooder. The best reading of the evidence is that Aequidens pallidus breeds like most acaras — a guarding biparental substrate-brooder, a pair laying adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface and guarding both eggs and free-swimming fry, with no oral incubation. Clutch size, egg counts, fry development and spawning triggers have never been reliably recorded for it. Anyone reading an old 'doublespot acara' or 'duopunctata' breeding report should treat the mouthbrooding claims with suspicion; they almost certainly concern Aequidens diadema rather than the true fish.
In the aquarium
Aequidens pallidus is rare in the hobby. It reaches the trade only sporadically, usually as bycatch of Rio Negro ornamental collecting, and many fish sold as 'doublespot acara' turn out to be misidentified Aequidens diadema or Aequidens tetramerus — so the first task is confirming what you actually have. A genuine specimen should be kept as any moderately large, running-water acara from blackwater Amazonia, using what is known of its habitat and of its well-documented congener Aequidens tetramerus.
Tank. It reaches at least 5.5 in SL and ranges over a wide territory, so give a single adult or a proven pair a footprint no smaller than 120 × 17.5 in (about 55 US gal), and more if tankmates share the space; a grow-out group meant to pair off naturally wants 150 × 19.5 in or larger.
Water. Aim for soft, warm, tea-coloured water: pH 6.0–7.0, hardness below 8 °dH, and 75–82 °F — the cooler end of FishBase's 72–86 °F band and a match for the low-mineral Rio Negro. Peat filtration or a blackwater extract helps, but cleanliness matters more, since acaras suffer as nitrate climbs and pH slides under accumulating waste. Change 40–60% weekly at a minimum; an external canister is ideal, its return angled away from strong surface turbulence, as this is a fish of marginal pools and slow streams rather than racing rapids.
Substrate and décor. Fine sand suits it best — it matches the natural bottom and lets the fish excavate at spawning time — laid 2–3 in deep. Build a dim forest-stream look with driftwood branches and roots for cover and territory edges, a scatter of dried leaves (Indian almond, catappa, oak) for tannins and refuge, and a smooth flat stone or two as possible spawning sites. Dense planting is unnecessary and may be uprooted by a spawning pair, though hardy low-light Microsorum or Anubias tied to wood will hold; keep the lighting subdued.
Feeding. Wild fish eat fish and detritus, and captive ones take a broad menu: quality cichlid pellets or sinking wafers as a staple, with frozen or live bloodworm, earthworms, Artemia, and the occasional scrap of fish or prawn. Offer two or three smaller meals a day rather than one large one, and gut-load live foods for lasting condition.
Tankmates. Day to day it is assertive rather than aggressive, but it will eat fish small enough to swallow and turns markedly more territorial over eggs or wrigglers. Pair it with robust, similarly sized fish that are neither bullies nor bite-sized: larger characins such as silver dollars or big tetras, peaceful catfish (Corydoras are risky at their size — larger Ancistrus, Farlowella or other loricariids are safer), or medium-large South American cichlids that occupy different zones. Avoid smaller cichlids, tiny schooling fish, and bottom-dwellers that linger in the pair's territory at breeding time; a lightly stocked tank with plenty of visual breaks is safest.
Difficulty and common mistakes. Intermediate. The fish is not delicate, but getting a correctly identified one is the real hurdle — verify the identification before you buy. The usual error with Rio Negro acaras is water that is too hard and too alkaline: pH above 7.5 and hardness above 10 °dH tell against it over time. Skimping on water changes is the surest path to fading condition, lateral-line erosion and disease. And a keeper hoping to see it spawn should expect no published guidance — as Kullander & Ferreira (1990) note, there are no reliable captive-breeding accounts, and the older 'duopunctata' reports almost certainly describe Aequidens diadema.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List rates Aequidens pallidus as Least Concern, assessed on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), reviewed by P. Reis. The species is endemic to Brazil but spread widely across the lower and middle Rio Negro, Uatumã, Preto da Eva and Puraquequara, where it is frequent and abundant; its population is judged stable, with no significant threats detected. It holds no CITES listing. It is scarce in the ornamental trade yet legally authorised for ornamental capture in Brazil, and the assessment records no established population in protected areas while flagging population size, distribution and trends as research needs. As with any narrow-range Amazonian endemic, its long-term prospects ride on the wider health of the Negro basin — and those Rio Uatumã collections, taken from pools left stranded by the Balbina dam, are a pointed reminder that large hydroelectric projects can remake exactly the lotic blackwater habitats this fish depends on. None of this is presently documented as a population-level threat to Aequidens pallidus, but it is the backdrop against which its status should be read.
