Apistogramma brevis is a tiny blackwater dwarf cichlid from the Rio Uaupés drainage of Brazil's upper Rio Negro, named simply for being short — small even by the diminutive standards of its genus. It lives in acidic, tannin-stained forest streams, where a female spawns in a cave and raises the fry alone. The fish is naturally scarce in the wild and only sporadically reaches the hobby, where it carries the trade code A168. It is also the nominal type species of a small assemblage of upper Rio Negro and Orinoco dwarfs, the brevis-group. Anyone tempted by it should know up front that it will not breed — and often will not thrive — without genuinely soft, acidic water.

Taxonomy & naming

Sven O. Kullander, the Swedish ichthyologist who has done more than anyone to sort out the genus, described Apistogramma brevis in 1980 in his foundational monograph (Bonner Zoologische Monographien 14: 1–152), the work that revised the Brazilian and Peruvian species. The type locality is the Rio Uaupés basin in Amazonas State, Brazil. The genus belongs to the cichlid subfamily Geophaginae (tribe Geophagini), the South American eartheaters and their dwarf relatives. Its epithet is the Latin brevis, "short" — a nod to the fish being small even next to the other Apistogramma that share its type locality. The genus name is usually read as Greek apistos ("uncertain, doubtful") plus gramma ("a drawn line or mark"), for the variably developed, often incomplete lateral line these fishes carry.

Where the species sits within the genus is best resolved through the hobby-systematics framework maintained by Mike Wise, the field's working authority on Apistogramma relationships. He treats Apistogramma brevis as the nominal type species of a brevis-group nested inside the larger trifasciata-lineage, and diagnoses that group on a consistent set of characters: tiny to moderately large fish (about 1.5–3 in) with moderately deep, slightly compressed bodies; serrated male dorsal fins; a caudal fin crossed by rows of fine spots, at least centrally; unusually short, blunt male pelvic (ventral) fins; and a net-like mesh of dark scale margins on the flanks. As Wise records it, the group holds four described plus five undescribed species and is endemic to the upper Rio Negro of Brazil and Colombia and the upper Río Orinoco of Colombia and Venezuela. Seriously Fish independently confirms the species as the type of the brevis-group; one of its metadata fields still carries the older label "personata complex / gibbiceps group," but Wise's framework supersedes that and it can be disregarded. In the trade the fish is catalogued as A168, part of the informal "A-number" system aquarists use to track forms that outpace formal description.

Morphology

Apistogramma brevis is a small, fairly deep-bodied, slightly compressed dwarf cichlid in muted blackwater tones — browns and greys lit by blue-green iridescence on the cheeks and flanks, overlaid by the dark, net-like scale edging Kullander and Wise use to characterize the group. Males carry the showier finnage: serrated, lappet-fringed dorsals and extensions to the dorsal, anal and caudal fins, while the pelvic (ventral) fins stay unusually short and blunt — a group hallmark. Rows of fine spots cross the caudal fin, at least centrally. The sexual dimorphism is the usual Apistogramma pattern: males larger and more elaborately finned, females plainer and, in brood condition, flushing an intense yellow.

Reported size depends on which source you trust, and the figures disagree in two ways worth flagging. First the number. The taxonomic literature is conservative — Kullander's 2003 checklist figure, carried by FishBase and the IUCN, gives a maximum of about 1.5 in, which would make Apistogramma brevis one of the smallest apistos. Aquarium references run larger, with Seriously Fish citing males to roughly 2.5 in and females to about 2 in, and Wise's group description reaching 3 in. Second the measurement basis: FishBase logs the 1.5 in figure as standard length (SL), while the IUCN assessment, citing the same Kullander 2003 source, gives it as total length — so even the authorities disagree on what was measured. The honest read is a very small fish somewhere in the roughly 1.5–2.5 in range, the lower museum value taken from wild specimens and the hobby maxima from well-fed captive stock.

Habitat

Apistogramma brevis is an Amazon-basin endemic with a narrow, blackwater range. The original description and Kullander's 2003 checklist both place it in the Rio Uaupés basin of Amazonas State, Brazil, and the IUCN assessment — which treats the species as endemic to Brazil — adds only informal records from the middle and upper Rio Negro upstream of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro. Hobby sources draw the range wider: Seriously Fish reports the fish from the Rio Tiquié in southern Colombia and from the upper reaches of both the Rio Negro and the Rio Orinoco. Treat that extension with caution at the species level. The IUCN notes that material reported as Apistogramma brevis from Venezuela by Lasso et al. (2004) was later re-identified as Apistogramma megaptera (Mesa & Lasso 2011), so the verified distribution is probably tighter than the broadest hobby maps suggest — the wider upper Negro and Orinoco footprint is better read as the range of the whole brevis-group than of this one species, which Seriously Fish itself calls a fish of "a relatively small range."

The water it lives in is the defining fact. These are slow forest streams, creeks and small tributaries of true Rio Negro blackwater — stained dark by humic and fulvic acids leached from decaying leaves, nearly free of dissolved minerals, and strongly acidic, with pH that can fall to 4–5. The rainforest canopy holds the surface in deep shade, and the bottom is a clutter of fallen branches and rotting leaf litter rather than open sand. It is a world of very low ionic content and low biological productivity, which shapes both how the fish lives and how collection pressure plays out. FishBase records no depth range; as a litter-zone dweller of shallow, shaded streams and inundated margins, Apistogramma brevis lives in the top metre or so of the water column — a rough 0–3 ft band — rather than at any measured depth. There is likewise no published in-situ temperature series for the species, so the warm, stable 79–82 °F aquarium target reflects typical lowland blackwater rather than a field record.

Feeding

Like most small Apistogramma, Apistogramma brevis is a benthic micropredator, working the leaf litter and woody debris of the stream bed for tiny invertebrates, larvae and other small organisms it can pick or sift from the substrate. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3 — squarely a small carnivore-leaning omnivore rather than a specialized grazer. Little in-situ dietary work exists for the species; the picture is inferred from its mouth and body form, its congeners, and its leaf-litter habitat, and is best read as a reasonable generalization rather than a measured diet.

Within its community it fills the role countless dwarf cichlids play in Amazonian blackwater — a small, cryptic resident of the litter zone, hunting micro-invertebrates and itself feeding larger fishes and birds. That blackwater is nutrient-poor, so populations are naturally thin and patchy; the IUCN describes the species as naturally infrequent and not very abundant, an ecological baseline rather than a sign of decline. The same omnivory carries into the aquarium: keepers offer a varied diet of small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp alongside quality prepared foods and some vegetable matter, and condition breeding fish on live and frozen invertebrates.

Mating

Apistogramma brevis follows the harem-polygynous mating system typical of the genus, organized almost entirely around competition for cave sites. It is a peaceful dwarf by cichlid standards, but not without edges: in breeding condition males turn territorial and can harass females, and access to suitable spawning cavities sets the social order. In a balanced group a single dominant male holds a loose territory that overlaps the smaller territories of several females, each defending a cave — and keepers reproduce this deliberately as a single-species harem of one male to three or more females, with caves spread out so no female is overworked. The genus's defining reproductive trigger is water chemistry: viable spawns need genuinely soft, acidic conditions, a point stressed repeatedly by the keepers who have worked with this rarely imported fish.

Much of the fine behavioral record here is anecdotal, drawn from a handful of keepers, and is best read as corroborated tendency rather than measured data — there is no published field study of pair formation or courtship in the species. What runs consistently through the accounts is that a receptive female adopts and defends a cave, that the male mostly fertilizes and patrols a wider territory, and that the female may turn intolerant even of the male once she has eggs. Because males can be aggressive toward females in this phase, experienced keepers deliberately supply some caves too small for the male to enter, giving the female a refuge from harassment.

Breeding

Apistogramma brevis is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with maternal care — the classic dwarf-cichlid mode, not the mouthbrooding of the African rift lakes. A female adopts a small cavity, attaches her eggs to its ceiling, and tends them alone; FishBase states plainly that the eggs are laid on the roof of caves and that the female cares for both eggs and larvae. Once she has eggs she becomes intensely territorial, flushing bright yellow and driving off intruders, the male included. Aquarium accounts (Seriously Fish) report the eggs hatching in roughly three days and the fry free-swimming another four or five days after that, with pairs generally proving attentive parents; the fry take newly hatched brine shrimp first and graduate onto adult foods as they grow.

No wild-spawned clutch size has been published — neither FishBase nor the aquarium literature gives an egg count — so any figure is genus-typical rather than measured: small cave-spawning Apistogramma of this size generally lay on the order of 40–80 eggs, glued to the cavity roof, and Apistogramma brevis is unlikely to stray far from that. The single most important condition for success is chemistry. Spawning is "not too difficult" given genuinely soft, acidic water, and often needs conditions softer and more acidic than routine maintenance, closer to the wild blackwater. A warm, dimly lit, well-furnished tank with several small caves and a litter of dried leaves both mimics the biotope and supplies the tannin-stained, low-mineral water the eggs need. As with much dwarf-cichlid breeding lore, the detail rests on a small number of keepers and should be treated as a reliable tendency rather than hard data.

In the aquarium

In the hobby Apistogramma brevis is genuinely rare — not merely uncommon but only sporadically imported and seldom bred in the numbers that would sustain a captive line. If you find it offered, treat it as a specialist purchase rather than a routine Apistogramma, and expect price and availability to match. It rewards keepers who already have a track record with the softer, more demanding apistos, because the water chemistry is unforgiving and most of the trouble people run into traces straight back to water that is not soft and acidic enough.

Tank: a harem group of one male with two or three females does best in at least 15–20 US gal, long rather than tall, with dense cover on the bottom. Caves are the make-or-break detail — one per female, spread so no female sees another's entrance, each small enough that the male cannot easily follow a guarding female inside. Coconut-shell halves, small clay pots and sections of narrow PVC all work. Lay down a deep bed of fine sand rather than gravel, which does not suit the litter-zone hunting style, and scatter dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, beech) to leach tannins, lower pH passively and add the visual clutter that defuses territorial aggression. Dim lighting, softened further by floating plants, keeps the fish active rather than stressed.

Water: chemistry is not negotiable. Hold the temperature at 79–82 °F, pH between roughly 4.5 and 6.5 — the lower end is where spawning turns reliable; the fish will survive nearer neutral but rarely breed — and hardness no higher than about 5 dH, genuinely soft and mineral-poor. On hard tap water that means RO or rainwater blended with a little peat-filtered or tannin-dosed water. A conductivity or TDS meter earns its keep here: many breeding failures come from water that reads soft on test strips yet is still too buffered for the eggs to develop. Match every water change to the tank — a sudden swing to harder or higher-pH replacement water is a dependable way to lose a clutch or spark aggression.

Tankmates: small open-water dither fish — Nannostomus pencilfish or Hemigrammus tetras from a compatible blackwater origin — help considerably, signalling to the cichlids that the surface is safe and pulling the male's attention off the females when tensions rise.

Sexing and common mistakes: males are larger (roughly 2–2.5 in against 1.5–2 in for females), carry the extended, serrated dorsal and the short, blunt pelvic fins of the brevis-group, and show more iridescence on the flanks; a female in breeding condition flushes an unmistakeable yellow. The mistake reported most often is keeping just a pair — a 1:1 ratio concentrates the male on a single female and invites chronic harassment and injury, so a harem of one male to three or more females is strongly preferred, and if only a pair is kept it needs extra visual breaks and extra caves. Condition breeders on varied small live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, white worm, brine shrimp nauplii — before a spawning attempt, watch or separate the male once a female is guarding, and expect fry that are manageable on freshly hatched brine shrimp from free-swimming and fairly robust thereafter. Given those correct conditions the species is described as not too difficult to breed — the qualifier carries the weight, because for Apistogramma brevis "correct" means a closer copy of Rio Negro blackwater than most keepers first attempt.

Conservation

The IUCN assesses Apistogramma brevis as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022; assessor Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio, reviewed by P. Reis). It is treated as endemic to Brazil, naturally scarce and low in abundance, with an unknown population trend. The one threat the assessment names is collection for the international ornamental-fish trade. Because the fish lives in low-productivity blackwater, the assessors note that even modest harvest could matter, and there are unquantified hints of local declines — but the dense network of protected areas and Indigenous lands across the middle and upper Rio Negro is judged to shield much of the population, which is why the verdict lands at Least Concern rather than a threatened category. There is no CITES listing. The recommendation is simple: monitor both wild populations and catch levels.

That species-level read sits inside a larger, more hopeful story about the basin. The Rio Negro is the model case for a sustainable ornamental fishery: since 1991 the Project Piaba initiative has shown that the aquarium trade is the economic backbone for thousands of riverine families around Barcelos, and that a living, profitable fishery gives those communities a direct stake in keeping the forest and its waters intact — "buy a fish, save a tree." The wider pressures are real — deforestation, mercury from gold mining, and a long decline in fishery demand that can perversely push people toward more destructive land uses — but for a small, dispersed, low-value species like this one the picture is a Least-Concern fish in a strained but not collapsing system. The river is under pressure; this particular fish, on current evidence, is not.
