Taxonomy & naming
The Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander described Apistogramma cruzi in his 1986 monograph, Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru. The holotype (NRM 16664, Swedish Museum of Natural History) came from a right-bank tributary creek of the Río Mazán, above the settlement of Puerto Alegre in the Loreto region of Peruvian Amazonia; paratypes are held at the Gothenburg (GNHM) and Peruvian (MHNSM) collections alongside further NRM material. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid — Apistogramma cruzi Kullander 1986, family Cichlidae, subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Geophagini.
The genus name pairs the Greek apisto (uncertain, inconstant) with gramma (a written line or marking) — a nod to the variable lateral striping that makes Apistogramma so hard to pin down. The species epithet is an eponym honoring José Cruz Rodriguez, the boat motorista and skilled volunteer who helped Kullander collect at Pebas in 1981 and at Mazán in 1984, recognized in the describer's own words for "his tireless help on those trips which added considerably to the inventory of the Peruvian ichthyofauna." In Spanish-speaking Peru the fish is lumped with other small cichlids as bujurqui; in the hobby it carries the A-number A83 and is occasionally called the parallel-striped dwarf cichlid, though that label is an aggregator coinage rather than a settled trade name.
Specialists place Apistogramma cruzi in the Apistogramma regani lineage, Apistogramma eunotus complex, Apistogramma cruzi subcomplex, following the widely used classification of Mike Wise hosted on Tom Christoffersen's Apisto site. The placement matters in practice, because the eunotus complex is a tangle of similar brown, banded fish, and decades of imports labeled "cruzi" have proved to be other members of the complex. After a 2007 expedition retracing Kullander's route up the Río Mazán, Christoffersen documented that almost none of the European aquarium fish sold as Apistogramma cruzi were the genuine article.
Morphology
This is a small fish. Kullander's material tops out at about 2 in standard length, and wild specimens usually run smaller. The body is moderately elongate with a rounded snout — the unremarkable, workmanlike shape shared across the eunotus complex.
Kullander's diagnosis separates Apistogramma cruzi from the very similar Apistogramma eunotus on fine but consistent points: none of the vertical body bars are split, the dark lateral band covers an entire longitudinal scale row rather than just its lower portion, and the abdominal stripes are distinct, with the upper two of three running far back along the flank (to bar 6 or 7) instead of fading out near mid-body. Field observers note a couple of features useful at the tank glass — broad blue markings beneath the eye and a caudal-base spot with a small notch cut from its rear edge, giving it a faintly crescent shape.
As in nearly all Apistogramma, the sexes differ sharply. Males grow larger and develop more color and longer, more elaborate fins; females stay smaller and plainer, turning an intense black-marked yellow when guarding eggs or fry. Color in life is modest by Apistogramma standards — keepers who saw the early imports often remarked that the fish "doesn't look like it has much color" — which is part of why genuine cruzi rarely drew attention in shops.
Habitat
Apistogramma cruzi lives in the upper Amazon basin. Catalog of Fishes and FishBase give its range as the Napo River drainage of Peru and Ecuador plus the Putumayo and Caquetá drainages of Colombia; the type locality sits in the lower Napo system near the Río Mazán, in the lower Ucayali–lower Napo region of Loreto, Peru. The IUCN assessment gathers records from Peruvian and Colombian Amazonia and from the Tambococha stream and Jatuncocha lagoon in the lower Napo basin of Ecuador, across an elevation band of roughly 328–1312 ft (330–1,310 ft).
It is a fish of small, slow waters rather than the main river channels. FishBase describes its habitat as slightly turbid, colorless water; the IUCN notes slow-flowing blackwater rivers with forested banks, plus seasonal use of groundwater-fed forest streams and shallow blackwater lagoons that flood into the forest during the wet season. Galacatos and colleagues (2004), who recorded the species in the Yasuní region of Ecuador, measured those forest-stream habitats at around pH 5.5–6.2, conductivity near 12–60 µS/cm, and temperatures of roughly 77–79 °F (77–79 °F). At the Peruvian type locality, Christoffersen's readings in a leaf-littered Mazán quebrada ran a touch higher — pH 6.71, conductivity 91 µS/cm, 83 °F (84 °F) — consistent with the observation that this part of Peru is less strongly blackwater than the deep tea-colored systems further downstream. The picture that emerges is soft, acidic-to-near-neutral, warm water over a substrate of sand and decaying leaves.
Feeding
Like its congeners, Apistogramma cruzi is a small benthic omnivore — a micropredator that works the leaf litter and soft sediment of shallow margins. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, and the IUCN calls it plainly omnivorous. In the wild that means a diet of small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other tiny prey sifted from detritus, rounded out with the organic matter that collects among submerged leaves.
In the leaf-bank communities it inhabits, a fish this size is both hunter and hunted: it takes invertebrates while staying vulnerable to larger fish, and it shelters in the structure that litter banks and flooded forest provide. The seasonal swelling and shrinking of these habitats — streams expanding into the forest at high water, then falling back to residual pools in the dry season — shapes where the fish turns up and crowds it together as the water drops. Christoffersen's account of finding true cruzi only in the last few quebradas still holding water at the end of a dry spell shows just how tightly these dwarf cichlids track the flood pulse. In the aquarium the same appetite is easily satisfied with small live and frozen foods — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, microworm — alongside quality dry foods that carry some roughage.
Mating
Across the genus, Apistogramma are typically harem-polygynous: one male holds a larger territory that overlaps the smaller, separately defended territories of several females, each of whom claims her own spawning cavity. Apistogramma cruzi follows the same pattern, with the bigger, showier male patrolling while the smaller females defend breeding sites inside his range. Pair formation hinges on the female's readiness — a ripe female colors up into the intense black-marked yellow that signals receptivity and warns off rivals, drawing the male to her cavity to spawn.
Hard species-specific data on courtship sequences, pair dynamics and typical harem size for Apistogramma cruzi itself are thin in the literature, so the safest statements are the ones that hold for the genus generally. What is well attested is that too little cover sharpens the social tension: where defensible caves are scarce, plain unguarded females become targets, and managing the male's territorial pressure on them is the keeper's main job. Favorable conditions — warm, soft, slightly acidic water and the flush of live food that the wet season brings — carry fish into breeding condition and trigger spawning.
Breeding
Apistogramma cruzi is a maternal cave (cavity) spawner, the reproductive mode of most Apistogramma. FishBase records that the eggs are attached to the ceiling of a cave and tended by the female, who then cares for the larvae — a maternal brood-care arrangement in which the smaller female does the close guarding while the male holds the surrounding territory. She cleans the chosen cavity, deposits her clutch on its roof, and the male enters to fertilize; after that she fans and defends the eggs, leads the wrigglers from pit to pit, and shepherds the free-swimming fry in a tight foraging shoal.
Species-specific figures for clutch size and brood-care duration are not well documented for Apistogramma cruzi, so the genus pattern is the honest guide: clutches on the order of a few dozen to roughly a hundred eggs, hatching in two to four days at tropical temperatures, with the fry free-swimming several days after that. Christoffersen's wild-caught Mazán fish bred readily once settled in Norway, which fits the broader picture: Apistogramma are not difficult to spawn given the right water and a willing pair, but raising the fry and buffering the male's territorial pressure on tending females is where the real skill lies. Soft, warm, slightly acidic water is the usual spawning trigger, and a generous supply of caves lets each female brood without being harassed.
In the aquarium
Genuine Apistogramma cruzi is one of the rarer dwarf cichlids in the hobby — not because it is hard to keep, but because almost nothing sold under the name is the real thing. As the Mazán-expedition account documents, experienced hobbyists who went looking for the fish and examined their imports under magnification found other eunotus-complex relatives instead. Go in with open eyes: unless a fish arrives with verifiable field documentation, or came directly from someone who traced it to the type drainage, there is a fair chance it is a near-lookalike. That caveat aside, the genus-typical care below serves Apistogramma cruzi and its complex-mates equally well.
Tank: a single male does fine in around 15–20 US gal (roughly a 60 × 15.5 in footprint), but a breeding group of one male with two or three females wants more room — 20–30 US gal, favoring footprint over height. Fine sand is the right substrate; the fish spends real time on or just above the bottom. A thick, irregular layer of dried leaf litter (Indian almond, oak, beech) is close to obligatory — it darkens and gently acidifies the water, releases tannins, creates foraging habitat, and gives females visual breaks from a pushy male. Add driftwood and rounded stones worked into caves and overhangs so every female has a spawning site, plus dense fine-leaved stem plants or floating cover. Keep the flow gentle and the lighting subdued; these are fish of nearly still forest streams.
Water: aim for the field readings — pH 5.5–6.8, temperature 77–84 °F, and very soft (general hardness under about 6–8 °dGH, conductivity below roughly 100 µS/cm). Christoffersen's Mazán creek sat at the upper end (pH 6.7, 91 µS/cm), while Ecuador's Yasuní sites were much softer (pH 5.5–6.2, 12–60 µS/cm). If your tapwater is hard, RO water cut back with a little hard water gives a workable start. Stability matters more than a precise figure: a large swing in pH or temperature stresses the fish more than water that settles at pH 6.5 in soft conditions and stays put. Weekly partial changes of about 25–30% keep nitrates down without jarring them.
Food: lean on small live and frozen invertebrates — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, micro-worm, frozen bloodworm — to mirror the leaf-litter micropredator diet and bring fish into spawning condition. High-quality small pellets and flakes can supplement, but fish fed only dry food often fail to color up or come into breeding trim.
Tankmates: choose peaceful species that use different water layers and won't compete for cave sites — small corydoras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, or similarly sized tetras from acidic South American waters make good dithers, their calm movement drawing the cichlids into the open. Avoid any cichlid or robust barb big enough to bully or eat the small females, and avoid territorial substrate dwellers that want the same caves. Do not mix Apistogramma cruzi with other Apistogramma unless the tank is large enough to hold genuinely separate territories.
Common mistakes: keep at least two females per male — a lone female with a male in breeding condition is pursued relentlessly and can be killed with nowhere to hide, and each female needs at least one cave she can defend. The usual errors are under-providing cover (chronic female harassment), keeping the fish too warm and hard (above pH 7 or in moderately hard water, color and condition suffer and breeding usually fails), and feeding too heavily on dry food. Given correct water, abundant cover, and regular live food, spawning is not hard to achieve — the main practical skill is separating the male after eggs are laid, or running a tank big enough that he cannot raid brooding females.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma cruzi as Least Concern (assessment by Ortega Torres, Sanchez-Duarte & Jimenez-Prado, evaluated 24 April 2014 and published 2016), with a population presumed stable and no known major threats. The reasoning is straightforward: the species is widely distributed across the upper Amazon of Peru, Colombia and Ecuador and is relatively frequently encountered. It is collected for the ornamental trade — listed in Peru's ornamental-fish reporting and exported from the country — but that pressure is not currently seen as a population-level threat, and the fish occurs inside protected areas including Ecuador's Yasuní and Cuyabeno reserves. The assessment is flagged as needing updating, so read the status as "no evidence of decline as of the mid-2010s" rather than a guarantee of present security.
That individual reassurance sits inside a basin under real strain. The Amazon is the most species-rich freshwater system on Earth — Kullander's own work in Reis, Kullander & Ferraris's Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003) helped catalogue that diversity — yet its tributaries face deforestation, sedimentation, spreading agriculture, oil and mining activity, dams and a warming climate. The forested headwater creeks Apistogramma cruzi depends on are exactly the habitats most exposed to logging and land-clearing along their banks; Christoffersen noted illegal timber extraction throughout the Mazán region he surveyed. The honest summary is the one the data support: this dwarf cichlid is, for now, common and not individually threatened, but it lives in small waters within a basin whose long-term health is anything but assured, and continued monitoring is warranted.
