Apistogramma minima may be the smallest cichlid on Earth: mature adults reach only about 1 in in standard length, and the largest specimen ever measured stopped at 1 in. A dwarf of the middle and upper Orinoco, it was described in 2011 from a single tea-coloured creek in Venezuela's Amazonas State, where it lives in blackwater so soft and acidic it barely conducts electricity. It is far too small to be a trade fish, and reaches aquarists only by accident — riding along in shipments of the larger Apistogramma it superficially resembles. In the end it is a species defined mostly by what it lacks: size, ornament, and, so far, any documented account of how it lives in the wild.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma minima was named in 2011 by the Colombian ichthyologists Lina M. Mesa Salazar and Carlos A. Lasso, in a monographic revision of the Orinoco-basin Apistogramma published by the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute in Bogotá. That revision nearly doubled the region's known fauna — recognizing eighteen species where ten had stood, and naming eight new ones, minima among them. Its holotype (MHNLS 18075), a 1 in fish held at the Museo de Historia Natural La Salle in Caracas, was collected in November 2003 from caño Guapuchi, a small affluent of the Río Ventuari in Estado Amazonas, Venezuela, at 4°11'35.7"N, 66°44'56.7"W; that creek is also the type locality. A single paratype (MHNLS 18023) came from caño Guachapana on the upper Orinoco. The genus name pairs the Greek apistos, 'inconstant' or 'uncertain', with gramme, 'line' — a nod to the variably developed, often incomplete lateral line of these small geophagine cichlids; Regan coined it in 1913 to replace his own preoccupied Heterogramma. Within the genus, Apistogramma minima sits among the plain, lightly marked Orinoco species and is most readily mistaken for Apistogramma inornata: the two are dwarfs of nearly identical size that overlap in range, told apart mainly by fin proportions and the pattern of the caudal bars (see Morphology). The species has no established common name.

Morphology

Even among a genus of dwarfs, Apistogramma minima stands out for its size — or the lack of it. Mesa and Lasso worked from material spanning 0.5–1 in in standard length and diagnosed the species as never exceeding 1 in, which makes the largest known individual barely the length of a neon tetra and, arguably, the smallest cichlid yet described. The name is literal: minima is Latin for 'smallest' or 'least'. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, brown above a paler belly, crossed by about seven faint vertical bars, with a dark stripe running back from the eye beneath the orbit. Its diagnostic marks are subtle and best read against its near-twin Apistogramma inornata. In Apistogramma minima the transverse bars on the caudal fin are thin, slightly wavy and set close together rather than thick and ruler-straight; a distinctive double lateral spot combines a large principal blotch on the second body bar with a smaller one on the first bar, abutting the rear edge of the gill cover; the front dorsal-fin rays are clear (hyaline) rather than pigmented; and the pectoral fin, anal-fin base, upper jaw and caudal fin are all proportionally short. Three well-defined longitudinal rows of pale, transversely elongate spots run along the flanks and persist throughout development. Because the description rested on alcohol-preserved specimens, almost nothing is known of the fish's colours in life, and with so few individuals ever examined its sexual dimorphism has never been documented — in Apistogramma at large, males grow somewhat bigger and brighter than females, but for this species that is inference, not observation.

Habitat

Apistogramma minima is endemic to the Orinoco basin, ranging across the middle and upper river from the Río Ventuari downstream to the Río Capanaparo and onto the Colombian llanos on the far bank. Recorded localities include the lower Capanaparo, the Río Puente Paria just south of Puerto Ayacucho, the middle Ventuari, the creeks of the internal Orinoco–Ventuari delta above where those two rivers meet, and, in Colombia, the Río Bita (caño El Mosco) and the lower Río Guaviare below its junction with the Inírida. The IUCN puts its extent of occurrence at about 79,311 mi² and its area of occupancy near 19,497 mi². This is a blackwater fish in the strict sense: the Ventuari and upper-Orinoco creeks it favours run tea-black to ochre, green, even bluish with humic acids, carry extremely low conductivity — no more than about 10 microsiemens per centimetre — and are generally acidic, below pH 5.3 (Mora et al. 2007). These are ion-poor, nutrient-poor waters, though the species also turns up in gentler conditions: the lower Guaviare at around pH 7.3, and the lower Capanaparo near its mouth, where pH averages about 5.9 over moderate conductivity. No water temperature has ever been published for it — the original description and the IUCN assessment log pH and conductivity but not heat — yet these lowland equatorial creeks stay warm year-round, broadly in the high 20s Celsius typical of the region. Nor is any depth range on record; the small forest creeks, lagoons and marginal pools it lives in are shallow leaf-litter habitats, and the roughly 0–3 ft figure given here is a habitat-typical estimate, not a measurement. Tellingly, the species is absent from the well-sampled Río Cataniapo even though it occurs in neighbouring drainages — a gap Mesa and Lasso read as a fingerprint of the basin's Miocene paleohydrography.

Feeding

No one has studied the diet of Apistogramma minima directly. The IUCN assessment, following Lasso's work on Orinoco fishes, assumes it feeds like its congeners — an entomophage taking small invertebrates — and FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, the mark of a micro-predator rather than a plant- or detritus-eater. Apistogramma as a group are micro-carnivores that pick tiny crustaceans, insect larvae and other meiofauna out of leaf litter and soft sediment, frequently taking mouthfuls of substrate and sorting the edible particles in the geophagine way. At under two centimetres, Apistogramma minima can only hunt the very smallest prey — the microcrustaceans, rotifers, worms and insect larvae of the leaf-litter layer — and it sits at the bottom of the cichlid size range in its creeks, itself fair game for almost any larger fish.

Mating

The reproductive behaviour of Apistogramma minima has never been watched or described — not in the wild, not in a tank. What little can be said is borrowed from the genus. Apistogramma are, with few exceptions, cave-spawning dwarf cichlids: a female claims and defends a small shelter — a crevice, a hollow under wood, a snail shell or a leaf — while one or more males hold larger, overlapping territories and court the females within them. Many species are facultatively polygynous, a dominant male spawning with several females across his range, and many show strong sexual dimorphism, the female donning a vivid yellow brooding dress. Whether Apistogramma minima follows that script is genuinely unknown: its sexes have not been distinguished in the literature, its courtship has never been observed, and its extreme small size could in principle bend the usual pattern. Anything past 'probably a cave-spawning dwarf cichlid, like its relatives' would be guesswork.

Breeding

As with mating, the breeding of Apistogramma minima is a blank. No clutch size, spawning trigger, egg or larval description, or account of parental care has been published. The genus is again the only guide: Apistogramma are overwhelmingly female-tended cave spawners, laying a small adhesive clutch — a few dozen to a couple of hundred eggs in the larger species — on the ceiling or wall of a sheltered cavity, the female guarding and fanning the eggs and then shepherding the free-swimming fry while the male patrols the surrounding territory. For a fish as tiny as Apistogramma minima, any clutch is likely to fall at the very small end of that range, but nothing has been counted, so the figure stays honestly unknown rather than guessed. The species is so seldom available and so easily overlooked that no aquarist has ever reported a spawning; documenting its reproduction, in the wild or the tank, is an open task the IUCN explicitly lists as a research need.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma minima is, as of this writing, one of the rarest Apistogramma in the hobby. It never appears in the regular ornamental trade; the few specimens that have reached aquarists came in as accidental inclusions among shipments of larger Venezuelan and Colombian Apistogramma, and no captive line exists. Anyone who acquires what they believe to be this fish should treat it as rare and potentially irreplaceable, and record everything — good aquarist notes have real scientific value here.

Water: the chemistry follows straight from the type locality. The Ventuari-system blackwater creeks run at or below 10 µS/cm and pH roughly 4.5–5.3, though specimens have been taken as high as pH 7.3 near whitewater confluences. In practice, aim for pH 4.8–6.5 and conductivity under 100 µS/cm — ideally below 50 for long-term health and any hope of spawning — at 77–84 °F; like most blackwater cichlids, Apistogramma minima is far more troubled by wrong chemistry than by a degree or two of temperature drift. Untreated tap water almost certainly will not do: RO water remineralised with a blackwater conditioner, or blended with a peat-conditioned soft-water source, is the workable route, and dried Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) leaves or a little peat filtrate supply the humic acids these fish are built for.

Tank: at a 1 in adult size a single pair can technically live in a modest box, but a well-planted, well-structured 10–15 US gal tank makes for a more stable environment, easier water management and better viewing. Use fine pale or dark sand — Apistogramma minima sifts the substrate for micro-invertebrates, and coarse gravel blocks that and abrades the barbels. Cover the floor with dried leaf litter (Indian almond, oak or beech) to mimic the forest bed, tint the water and grow both micro-food and cover. Several small caves — coconut-shell halves, pottery shards, small ceramic tubes — are essential: if the fish holds to the Apistogramma template, a female will claim one to spawn and brood in and will not settle without it. Keep the light low and the planting fine (Java moss and the like), and run filtration that turns the water over gently, without current — a sponge filter or a baffled hang-on-back.

Tankmates: at only 1 in, companion choice is unusually fussy — almost anything big enough to nip a fin or read as a threat is wrong. The safest dithers are tiny, peaceful, upper-water nanos: small pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.) from the same blackwater habitats fit ecologically, and any gentle nano from soft, acidic water (Boraras spp., say) works too. Bottom-dwelling loaches, plecos and any larger cichlid do not. Keep other Apistogramma out unless the tank is big enough for wholly separate territories, since conspecific aggression in tight quarters lands on the smallest fish present; a single male with one or two females is easier on everyone than a lone pair in a cramped tank, where a female can be harassed without let-up.

Sexing is hard. The description came from a short series of alcohol-preserved fish in which dimorphism was never characterised, so one can only extrapolate from the genus — males the slightly larger, brighter fish with extended dorsal spines, females smaller, rounder-bellied and plainer — until living adults are actually observed. Difficulty is high, not because the species is inherently delicate but because the chemistry is exacting, the fish are tiny and easily lost from view, the trade supply is essentially zero, and there is no husbandry literature to lean on. A keeper who managed to maintain and breed it would be filling a real gap, and a well-documented account would be of genuine scientific interest.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List rates Apistogramma minima Least Concern, assessed on 2 August 2020 by Lina Mesa-Salazar, reviewed by Donald C. Taphorn and published in 2022. The reasoning is its broad spread across the middle Orinoco, in both still and flowing water, with many records falling inside protected areas — El Tuparro National Park, the Bita and Inírida Ramsar wetlands in Colombia, and the Santos Luzardo (Cinaruco-Capanaparo) National Park and Sipapo reserve in Venezuela — and no sign of decline. CITES does not list it, and the assessors note it is unclear whether the species enters the ornamental trade at all; the trickle that reaches aquarists comes as accidental bycatch among larger Apistogramma. The one localized threat the Red List flags is illegal gold mining around the Orinoco–Ventuari confluence, near the type locality, within Venezuela's Yapacana National Park — activity that loads the water with mercury and other metals and drags deforestation and settlement into an otherwise lightly touched region. That hotspot aside, the blackwater creeks of Apistogramma minima are among the better-protected freshwater habitats in northern South America, and the real conservation issue is not threat but ignorance: its population size, ecology and reproduction are all unknown, and the IUCN names basic research and monitoring as the priorities.
