Apistogramma ortmanni, Ortmann's dwarf cichlid, is a small, sober-coloured dwarf cichlid of the Guianas, living in the acidic, leaf-stained streams that drain the white-sand forests of Guyana and Suriname. Eigenmann named it in 1912 from the savannah of British Guiana, making it one of the first Apistogramma ever described — yet it stays one of the least understood. For most of the twentieth century, almost every fish sold in the hobby as "ortmanni" was really its showier look-alike, Apistogramma steindachneri, so genuine ortmanni are still scarce in the trade. The real fish is a quiet, robust member of the regani lineage with no flashy finnage, and several of its scattered populations may yet prove to be species in their own right.

Taxonomy & naming

Carl H. Eigenmann described this fish in 1912 as Heterogramma ortmanni in his monograph on the freshwater fishes of British Guiana, working from material collected at Erukin, Guyana — the type locality. The name later moved to Apistogramma, the genus Regan erected in 1913, and the combination Apistogramma ortmanni has been treated as valid ever since (Kullander & Nijssen 1989; Kullander in Reis et al. 2003). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the holotype as FMNH 53801 (originally Carnegie Museum no. CM 2306), backed by an unusually large series of 62 paratypes spread across museums in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, London, Berlin, Cambridge and elsewhere — a broad type series that reflects how common the fish was at its collecting sites. Within the genus it sits in the regani lineage, where Tom Christoffersen's classification places it as forms A46–A49. Unlike the steindachneri-group fish it is so often mistaken for, members of the regani lineage lack a bold lateral body spot, and that missing spot is the quickest field separation from steindachneri and its relatives. The confusion runs deep: as the dwarf-cichlid specialist Mike Wise and others have noted, the early hobby photographs and accounts labelled "Apistogramma ortmanni" actually all showed steindachneri-group fish, and even now most aquarium stock traded under the name in North America is misidentified Apistogramma steindachneri. The first published photographs of genuine Apistogramma ortmanni did not appear until 1985, in Germany. The IUCN assessors add a taxonomic caveat of their own: the genus is more diverse than its described species count suggests, and ortmanni populations away from the lowland coastal rivers of Guyana will probably turn out to be distinct, as-yet-undescribed species.

Morphology

Ortmann's dwarf cichlid is small even by Apistogramma standards. FishBase gives a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length for males (after Kullander 2003), roughly 2 in for females, and a maximum total length of around 3 in — so a large aquarium male is a fish of perhaps three inches including the tail. The body is the typical elongate, laterally compressed Apistogramma shape, and the colours are quiet. This is not one of the genus's brilliant species; keepers who know it call it subdued, without the elongated, flag-like dorsal and the lyre-tails that make fish such as cacatuoides or Apistogramma steindachneri popular. Eigenmann's original account describes a brownish fish marked by a dark stripe running from the snout through the eye and back along the body, further dark lines low on the flanks, a spot at the base of the pectoral and another at the caudal peduncle, and — strongest in stressed or displaying fish — a tendency to show several vertical cross-bars; the caudal fin is rounded and may be faintly barred. Crucially, it carries no single bold mid-body blotch, which is the one feature that most reliably separates it from the steindachneri group. Like nearly all Apistogramma the species is strongly sexually dimorphic: males grow larger and develop more finnage and colour, while females stay smaller and plainer. Because several geographically separate forms exist across the range, the fine details of pattern shift from one population to the next.

Habitat

Apistogramma ortmanni is a fish of the Guiana Shield's coastal lowlands. The Catalog of Fishes and the IUCN assessment place it in the Essequibo River drainage — including the Potaro and Rupununi tributaries — and in the Demerara, Berbice and smaller coastal rivers of Guyana, plus the Corantijn River shared by Guyana and Suriname; FishBase also lists the Cuyuni basin, an Essequibo tributary reaching into eastern Venezuela, where the species is thought likely but not yet formally recorded. Its home waters are the classic tannin-stained habitats of the white-sand forests: streams and pools where light is low, the water runs clear to tea-coloured, dissolved minerals and nutrients are very low, and the bottom is carpeted with leaf litter and fallen sticks; where sunlight reaches the shore, rooted plants form marginal stands. These are acidic environments — the IUCN account stresses "very acid pH" — and field measurements bear that out. A Swedish collecting team working a blackwater swamp in the Essequibo drainage in 2019, in habitat holding an ortmanni/steindachneri-assemblage Apistogramma, logged a pH of 4.6 and a temperature of 79 °F (about 79 °F), and FishBase brackets the species' range at roughly 73–84 °F. Like most dwarf cichlids of these biotopes, it keeps to shallow water — small forest creeks, marshes, pools and stream margins, generally well under a metre deep — rather than any open, deep channel.

Feeding

The IUCN assessment describes Apistogramma ortmanni plainly as an omnivore, taking both plant material and invertebrates, and FishBase's modelled trophic level of about 3.3 fits a small, opportunistic predator that also ingests vegetable matter and detritus. In its native leaf-litter streams that means working the bottom and the leaf pack for tiny aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and the like — in the manner typical of the genus, which sifts mouthfuls of fine sediment and picks out the edible particles. No gut-content study specific to ortmanni appears in the literature, so its wild diet is inferred from the genus's well-known feeding ecology and the assessors' omnivore designation rather than measured directly. In the aquarium it accepts the standard dwarf-cichlid fare, taking small live and frozen foods readily and learning to feed on quality prepared foods.

Mating

Ortmann's dwarf cichlid follows the reproductive pattern that defines Apistogramma. The IUCN account notes that, like most of the genus, it is strongly sexually dimorphic, forms pair bonds with nuptial courtship rituals, and gives parental care to eggs and fry. In practice a ripe female selects and defends a small cavity and entices a male to it, the two trading the lateral displays and quivering courtship typical of the group before they spawn. Whether a given population leans toward strict pair-spawning or toward a polygamous harem — one male loosely overseeing the territories of several females, as often happens in the genus where there is room — has not been documented in detail for ortmanni specifically, and the genus's range across both strategies should make a keeper cautious about generalising. As with its relatives, the female becomes the dominant, intensely territorial partner once eggs are present, and aggression around a brooding female is to be expected; broken sightlines and plenty of cover are the standard way to stop that aggression turning lethal in confinement.

Breeding

Apistogramma ortmanni is a cave-spawning, larvophilic substrate brooder. FishBase records that the eggs are fixed to the ceiling of a cave and that the female tends the eggs and larvae — the maternal, female-led care pattern characteristic of most of the genus, in which she fans the clutch inside the cavity while the male patrols the surrounding territory. The species has rarely been bred in captivity, being uncommon in the hobby and seldom offered, and no clutch count specific to ortmanni is available. For scale, closely allied dwarf cichlids that spawn the same way typically lay on the order of 80 to 150 eggs per spawning, and prolific relatives such as Apistogramma steindachneri produce 150–200 fry or more, so ortmanni's clutches are presumably in the lower-to-middle part of that range. After hatching, the fry are guarded by the female and shepherded as a free-swimming brood, again in the genus pattern. One point is worth flagging for anyone attempting them: in many dwarf cichlids the sex ratio of a brood is strongly influenced by incubation temperature and water chemistry, so spawning conditions can skew a batch heavily toward one sex. Because true ortmanni are scarce in the trade and at least some populations come from genuine blackwater, a keeper who can identify the collection locality is best advised to match it — soft, acidic, leaf-stained water for blackwater forms — rather than assume the fish will breed in hard, alkaline conditions.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma ortmanni is genuinely uncommon in the hobby — not rare in the protected sense, but scarce in the sense of being almost never offered. Most fish sold under the name have been misidentified Apistogramma steindachneri or related steindachneri-group species, so a keeper who actually sources verified ortmanni has usually gone through a specialist importer, a cichlid-society contact, or an enthusiast who maintains known-locality stock. Rarity aside, nothing about the fish makes it especially difficult; it fits the standard template for a Guiana-Shield Apistogramma and does well in the hands of anyone already comfortable with the genus.

Tank: 15–20 US gal suits a pair, and 25 US gal or more is better for a trio (one male, two females) or a small harem. Footprint matters more than volume — a long, shallow tank lets the female hold a cave territory while the male keeps his distance, which cuts the stress and injury a cramped setup causes at spawning time. A fine-grain sandy substrate is essential; the fish sift it for food and settle in a way they never do over coarse gravel. A deep layer of dried leaf litter (catappa or beech both work and both break down naturally) anchors the biotope and keeps the water soft and slightly acidic as it decomposes, doubling as a gentle pH buffer. Distribute several snug caves — coconut-shell halves, stacked ceramic shards, or small clay tubes — so the female can claim and defend one while the surplus stops the male trapping her.

Water: track the wild habitat closely — soft to very soft (below 100 µS conductivity is ideal, below 50 better still for conditioning), pH 4.5–6.5, temperature 75–81 °F. The documented field pH of 4.6 for Essequibo-drainage ortmanni-assemblage habitat shows just how acid the species tolerates; most keepers find pH 5.5–6.0 the sweet spot between genuine softwater chemistry and the stability that a little more buffering brings. This is emphatically not a hard, alkaline tap-water fish: rain water, reverse-osmosis water, or similar is the responsible starting point, especially for breeding, and nitrates should be kept low with regular partial changes of appropriately prepared soft water.

Tankmates: choose fish that share the biotope and chemistry. Small Guiana-Shield characins — pencilfish (Nannostomus species), hatchetfish, or small tetras such as Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis or the smaller Moenkhausia species — make good dither fish, signalling that the water is safe and easing the Apistogramma's skittishness. Avoid cichlids of similar size or temperament that might contest the cave. Corydoras or small loricariids can share the bottom but should be added with care; in a small tank with a brooding female, even harmless catfish may draw aggression. Fish that demand hard, alkaline water are entirely unsuitable.

Sexing is straightforward once you know the cues: males run larger with more elaborate finnage and colour, females smaller and drabber — consistent across the genus and confirmed for ortmanni. The female's intensified yellow-orange around the head and abdomen at spawning time is the most reliable behavioural tell. Common mistakes: treating ortmanni as interchangeable with showier Apistogramma — buying on impulse, dropping it into hard, neutral tap water, then wondering why it is listless or will not breed — and failing to distinguish it from Apistogramma steindachneri before purchase, where the presence or absence of the bold mid-body blotch is the deciding character. Given how rarely genuine stock appears, keepers who do obtain verified fish are encouraged to breed them and document the results; the published captive-breeding record for this species is essentially blank.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma ortmanni as Least Concern (assessment by Taphorn & Rodríguez-Olarte, last assessed 25 December 2020, published 2022). The reasoning is straightforward: the species is widespread across many sites in the Guianas and locally abundant at a good number of them, its population trend is judged stable, and although there are no population estimates, the total is assumed to exceed 10,000 mature individuals. It carries no CITES listing. The assessors do note real pressures on its habitat, however. The coastal lowlands of Guyana where it concentrates are affected by urban and residential development, sugar-cane agriculture, deforestation and — significantly for a Guiana-Shield fish — bauxite mining, threats rated as causing slow-to-very-rapid local declines in the affected part of its range. The species turns up in the international ornamental-fish trade, but the assessment records no significant current wild collection or export, so trade is not a population-level concern. Against the wider regional backdrop of steady industrial and agricultural conversion of Guianan lowland watersheds, none of this is documented as an active danger to ortmanni as a species; but because it depends on undisturbed, low-nutrient, acidic forest streams, habitat degradation rather than collection is the pressure most worth watching. The assessors also call for basic research into the species' taxonomy, distribution, ecology and threats, a reminder of how little is firmly known about this long-named but lightly studied fish.
