Apistogramma regani is a small geophagine dwarf cichlid of the Amazon's blackwater country, described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven Kullander in 1980 from a tea-dark forest stream in the lower Rio Negro. Barely two inches long, it is a cave-spawning micropredator that hunts the tiny invertebrates living in submerged leaf litter. Its real fame, though, is as a taxonomic headache: "regani" lends its name to an entire group of look-alike dwarf cichlids, and most aquarium fish sold under the name are something else entirely.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma regani was described by Sven O. Kullander in 1980, in his monographic revision of the genus published in Bonner Zoologische Monographien (No. 14, pages 1–152). The holotype, IRSNB 577, is held at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels. The type locality is an igarapé — a small forest stream — feeding the Rio Negro within the Anavilhanas Archipelago of Amazonas State, Brazil, at roughly 3°00'S, 60°45'W. The species name honours Charles Tate Regan (1878–1943), the British ichthyologist of the Natural History Museum in London who erected the genus Apistogramma in 1913 and revised the American cichlids in 1905–1906; Kullander dedicated the fish to him in recognition of that work. The genus name itself joins the Greek apistos ("inconstant" or "unreliable") and gramme ("line"), an allusion to the variably developed, often incomplete lateral line that runs through the genus.

Within Apistogramma, Apistogramma regani anchors its own regani group, and there the trouble begins. The IUCN assessment plainly notes the species "could be a species complex," and specialist aquarists agree. In Mike Wise's widely cited survey of Apistogramma species-groups, the regani lineage is flagged as harbouring complex and undescribed forms — traded names such as Apistogramma sp. "Masken"/"Apache" and Apistogramma sp. "São Gabriel" have all circulated under the regani label, alongside regional forms like Apistogramma cf. regani "Trombetas." The practical consequence is that the great majority of fish offered commercially as "Apistogramma regani" are not Kullander's species at all. The confusion runs deep enough that, historically, regani-group specimens were repeatedly shuffled between names: Buntbarsche Bulletin records that Meinken's 1971 material later assigned to Apistogramma regani had earlier been called Apistogramma borellii, one of seven names tangled around that other dwarf over the decades.

Morphology

This is a small fish even by dwarf-cichlid standards: FishBase gives a maximum of about 2 in standard length for males and 2 in for females, so a fully grown adult is roughly two inches before the tail fin. The body is the typical elongate, laterally compressed Apistogramma shape, marked by a bold lateral band running from the snout to the caudal base and a series of vertical bars that flare dramatically when the fish is excited or holding territory.

The most reliable field mark separating the true species from its impostors sits on the tail. On genuine Apistogramma regani, males carry prominent banding across the entire length of the caudal fin, and females show the same pattern, if more muted. The frequently traded Apistogramma sp. "Masken," by contrast, shows banding only on the rearmost part of the tail, with females sporting an unpatterned caudal — a difference experienced keepers use to call out mislabeled stock. A small dark spot near the vent is another character keepers look for. As with most apistos, the sexes diverge with maturity: males grow larger, with longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, while females are smaller and, when guarding eggs, turn an intense yellow crosscut by black bars. The fish's mosaic of characters has never been easy to place — observers note features pulling it toward both the eunotus and the macmasteri complexes, leaving its exact position within the genus genuinely unsettled.

Habitat

Apistogramma regani is an Amazonian endemic of Brazil. Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both centre its distribution on the lower Rio Negro drainage, the type series coming from the Anavilhanas island maze. The IUCN assessment describes a broader Brazilian range — spanning the states of Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia and Roraima with an estimated extent of occurrence near two million square kilometres — but those outlying records are exactly where the "species complex" caveat bites, and several may represent confusion with related regani-group fish rather than true Apistogramma regani.

What matters for understanding the fish is the kind of water it came from. The Rio Negro is the Amazon's great blackwater river: stained dark by dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from the surrounding forest, strikingly acidic, nutrient-poor and very low in dissolved minerals. Apistogramma regani lives at the margins of this system — shallow, slow forest streams and flooded-forest (igapó) edges floored with sand and a deep mat of fallen leaves and branches. A biotope record for the type-region Igarapé Bosò describes clear, highly transparent, slow-flowing water, consistent with the soft, acidic forest tributaries the species favours. FishBase's captive-care envelope for the species runs to about pH 6.5 and upward and 5 dH and upward — gentler than the wild blackwater — while keepers of genuine stock report the fish needs considerably softer, more acidic water than that to thrive. Recorded temperatures span roughly 73–86 °F. That leaf litter is the entire stage on which the fish feeds, breeds and hides.

Feeding

Like other Apistogramma, Apistogramma regani is a benthic micropredator. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with a carnivore that takes small animal prey rather than plant matter. In the wild that means sifting the leaf litter and the top layer of sand for tiny invertebrates — copepods, ostracods, aquatic insect larvae and other meiofauna that shelter in the decaying litter. This is the standard ecological niche across the genus, and observations of regani-group fish foraging through leaf litter and substrate match it closely.

Within its blackwater community the species is a small, low-trophic player, prey itself for pike cichlids, larger characins and other ambush predators of the flooded forest. The acidic, ion-poor chemistry of the Rio Negro is harsh enough that relatively few fish families thrive there, which sharpens the importance of the leaf-litter microhabitat: it is simultaneously the larder, the nursery and the cover that keeps a two-inch cichlid alive.

Mating

Apistogramma regani follows the harem-polygynous template typical of the genus. A dominant male holds a comparatively large territory that overlaps the smaller, defended territories of several females, courting and spawning with each in turn rather than forming a lasting pair bond. Females do the choosing, the egg-tending and the close defence of fry; the male's role is to patrol the wider ground and fend off rivals. Courtship is a business of posture and colour — the female flushing a vivid lemon-yellow shot through with black, the male flaring his unpaired fins and lateral bars. In the confines of an aquarium this social structure has to be respected: too little floor space or too few females and the male's attention concentrates lethally on whichever female is nearest, so successful keeping leans on broken sight-lines and enough room for each female to hold her own corner.

Breeding

Apistogramma regani is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with the maternal care pattern characteristic of the genus. FishBase records that the eggs are attached to the ceiling of a cave and tended by the female, who guards the clutch and then the free-swimming fry while the male holds and patrols the wider territory. Females turn brilliant yellow with black markings in brood-care mode, a signal both to the fry and to any intruder. Clutch sizes in the genus are modest — typically on the order of several dozen eggs for a fish this small — and the female leads and herds the fry through the leaf litter once they are mobile, flicking them back into cover at any threat.

The key to breeding the genuine species lies in its water chemistry. Keepers who have worked with true regani report it as a committed blackwater fish that needs very soft, strongly acidic conditions — around pH 5.5 — to spawn successfully, considerably more demanding than the regani-complex look-alikes, which will breed in merely slightly acidic, moderately soft water. This is a recurring source of frustration on the forums: a keeper buys "regani," breeds it easily, and thereby discovers they almost certainly own one of the easier impostors rather than Kullander's blackwater specialist. As with most dwarf cichlids, parental aggression can spike in confined quarters, and the male may need removing once the fry are free-swimming if the tank is small.

In the aquarium

Before anything else, a practical warning: the fish sold as Apistogramma regani is very often not Apistogramma regani. As the Taxonomy section describes, the regani group is full of look-alikes, and most commercially available stock belongs to easier, less demanding congeners. The advice that follows applies to the genuine species as understood from keepers who have maintained verified blackwater regani; for the common trade fish, moderately soft and slightly acidic water will often suffice, but for Kullander's original from the Anavilhanas you need to go further.

A single pair of true Apistogramma regani can be kept in a tank of around 23.5 in, but the species's harem-polygynous social structure means a more natural arrangement is one male with two or three females in a tank of 31.5–39.5 in or larger. Floor space matters more than height: this is a bottom-dweller that rarely ventures more than a few centimetres above the substrate. A fine-grained sand bottom covered with a loose layer of dried oak or Indian almond leaves replicates the leaf-litter microhabitat the fish evolved in and is, in practice, the single most useful thing a keeper can provide — it gives the fish foraging stimulus, reduces stress by breaking up sightlines, and lowers the water's pH and hardness slightly as the leaves decompose. Several caves (coconut shells, terracotta pots, or short lengths of PVC pipe tipped on their sides and buried partly in the sand) give females a choice of spawning sites and somewhere to retreat from the male. Some gentle water movement from a small sponge filter or spray bar directed along the back glass keeps conditions stable without generating the current these fish would never encounter in the wild.

Water chemistry is where Apistogramma regani diverges sharply from easier apistos. Keepers working with confirmed stock consistently report that the fish is reluctant to spawn and prone to condition problems in anything above pH 6.0, and that conditioning and spawning are much more reliable at pH 5.5 and below, matched with very soft water (under 3 °dH general hardness). Temperature can run between 23 and 81 °F for routine keeping, and a modest rise toward 81–84 °F can help trigger breeding condition in a well-settled pair. Achieving and maintaining these parameters typically requires reverse-osmosis or rainwater, remineralised lightly (a conductivity of 50–100 µS is a reasonable target) and acidified with peat filtration or blackwater extract rather than chemical additives. Cutting corners here with tap water that merely lacks carbonate hardness usually ends in disappointment.

For tankmates, the safest approach is a species-only setup or a blackwater biotope arrangement. Small, peaceful characins that live naturally alongside Apistogramma in the Rio Negro — tetras such as Hyphessobrycon and Moenkhausia species, or pencilfish — make good dither fish, drawing the cichlids out from cover and reducing skittishness without competing for the substrate or provoking territorial responses. Corydoras are generally fine companions at the substrate level, though the most commonly available Corydoras prefer harder, more neutral water than Apistogramma regani needs; the soft-water Corydoras (Corydoras hastatus, Corydoras pygmaeus, or similar) are better matched. Anything boisterous or fin-nipping is unsuitable. Other Apistogramma males should not be housed together unless the tank is large and heavily planted.

Sexing mature adults is straightforward on size and finnage: males are noticeably larger with longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins and carry bold banding across the whole caudal fin, while females are smaller with rounder fins. When a female is guarding eggs or fry she turns an intense lemon-yellow with black markings that make her unmistakable. Difficulty is moderate to high — the water-chemistry demands and the sourcing problem (finding genuine, properly identified stock) place Apistogramma regani above the beginner level. Common keeper mistakes are using the wrong water (too hard, too alkaline), overcrowding the male with too few females in too small a space, and failing to recognise that a fish that spawns readily in neutral, moderately soft water is almost certainly not the species they bought.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma regani as Least Concern, in a global evaluation dated 29 October 2020 (published in the 2025 Red List update; assessor R. G. Frederico). The reasoning is straightforward: the species appears widespread across the Brazilian Amazon and locally common, with no documented threats and an estimated extent of occurrence around two million square kilometres. Its population trend is recorded as unknown, and it moves in the ornamental trade as a small, fast-maturing cichlid — collection pressure that, for a widely distributed fish, is not currently considered a population-level risk. Worth flagging: the assessment itself notes the taxon may be a species complex, so its apparent range and abundance partly reflect look-alikes pooled under one name.

Placing the fish in its basin: the lower Rio Negro is among the better-buffered parts of the Amazon for a fish like this. Much of the Rio Negro ornamental harvest is small-scale and seasonal, and is frequently cited — through initiatives such as Project Piaba — as a model of a fishery that gives riverside communities an economic reason to keep the forest and its blackwater intact. The broader Amazon basin nonetheless faces real and mounting pressures: deforestation, hydroelectric dams that fragment rivers, mining and the mercury that comes with it, and a warming, shifting climate. For a leaf-litter specialist tied to flooded-forest margins, the relevant long-term risk is less the aquarium trade than the loss or degradation of the igapó habitat itself. The fair summary is the plain one: the species is currently secure, even as the basin it depends on is not uniformly so.
