Apistogramma sororcula is a small, clearwater dwarf cichlid of the rio Guaporé (río Iténez) drainage on the Bolivia-Brazil frontier — the river that traces the southeastern rim of the Bolivian Amazon. Hobbyists knew it for nearly three decades as 'Apistogramma sp. Rio Guaporé' or 'Apistogramma cf. staecki' before Wolfgang Staeck and Ingo Schindler finally gave it a formal name in 2016. The name they chose, 'little sister,' is a quiet bit of taxonomic honesty: the fish is the near-twin of Apistogramma staecki, separated from it not by a wall of obvious anatomy but by the slow vicariance of two Bolivian river basins. It is a member of the cacatuoides species complex, a leaf-litter specialist of shallow lagoon margins, and — unlike its more famous relatives — has no GBIF record and no IUCN assessment at all.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma sororcula was described by Wolfgang Staeck and Ingo Schindler in 2016 in Vertebrate Zoology (66(2): 141-150), published by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft. The holotype, MTD-F 33580, is an adult male of 1.5 in standard length collected by Staeck in 2004 from the rio San Martín, approximately 3 mi upstream of the village of Bella Vista in the Departamento Beni, Bolivia; the bulk of the type series is housed in the Museum für Tierkunde Dresden (MTD), with two paratypes deposited at the Centro de Investigación de Recursos Acuáticos of the Universidad Técnica del Beni in Trinidad, Bolivia (CIRA-UTB). The species had circulated in the aquarium literature since its discovery in 1987 under provisional names such as 'Apistogramma sp. Guaporé' and 'Apistogramma cf. staecki Rio Guaporé,' and an old record of Apistogramma staecki itself from the Guaporé (Kullander, 2003) very likely refers to this fish under a misidentification.

Staeck and Schindler place Apistogramma sororcula in the Apistogramma cacatuoides species complex, a group of geophagine dwarf cichlids characterized by only three infraorbital pores together with marked sexual dimorphism and dichromatism. Within that complex its closest relative is Apistogramma staecki Kossowski, 1985 — the 'sister' the epithet alludes to — described from the adjacent rio Mamoré system. The two form a vicariant, allopatric species pair: sororcula occupies the rio Guaporé basin while staecki is confined to the rivers draining the western Bolivian lowlands. Males of the two are separable chiefly by the number of narrow vertical stripes on the caudal fin (usually 10-12, rarely 13, in adult male sororcula versus up to 8 in staecki), a lateral band that reaches the caudal fin or caudal spot, short vertical streaks forming oblique stripes on the anterior abdominal scales, distinctly produced dorsal-fin lappets, and a dark mark on the chin. The authors note that such pairs of nearly identical sister species — Apistogramma erythrura and Apistogramma trifasciata, or Apistogramma linkei and Apistogramma inconspicua — are a recurring pattern among the dwarf cichlids of the Bolivian lowlands.

Morphology

This is a small, comparatively slender geophagine cichlid with body depth only about 30-34% of standard length. As is typical for the genus, males are the larger and showier sex: the examined adult males run roughly 1.5 in SL (the holotype is 1.5 in), and most fish are well under 2 in. The fish carries the diagnostic apparatus of the cacatuoides complex — only three infraorbital pores — together with strong sexual dimorphism and dichromatism. The mouth is terminal with a slightly projecting lower jaw, the snout short, and the caudal peduncle taller than long. Fin counts include a dorsal fin of XV-XVI spines and 6-7 soft rays and an anal fin of III spines and 5-7 soft rays.

The male's defining feature is the tail and the long fins. The caudal fin is truncate but drawn out into short dorsal and ventral streamers (up to about 40% of SL including the streamers) and bears a distinct reticulate pattern of up to twelve (rarely thirteen) narrow dark transverse bars; the anterior dorsal-fin membranes form long, produced lappets, and the pelvic fins extend into long thread-like filaments reaching well past the front of the anal fin. Coloration is polychromatic: adult males occur in a yellow morph, with bright yellow cheeks and gill covers, and a bluish morph with a whitish-to-bluish lower head, both crossed by a dark suborbital stripe that widens sharply toward the throat, a black upper pectoral spot, a dark band across the chin just below the lower lip, and a narrow zigzagging lateral band ending in a small round caudal spot. Females are smaller and largely beige, frequently with a yellow head and belly, a prominent black suborbital stripe, a pectoral spot, and a midventral stripe; during brood care a female turns brilliant lemon-yellow with the suborbital stripe reduced to a black blotch in the corner of the gill cover and the ventral and anal-fin membranes blackened.

Habitat

Apistogramma sororcula is known from a number of localities scattered along the upper and lower rio Guaporé (río Iténez), in the province of Beni in Bolivia and the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil; Brazilian collecting sites cluster near Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade, and the Bolivian type locality lies on the rio San Martín about 3 mi upstream of Bella Vista. The georeferenced point on this page (about 13.27°S, 63.70°W) marks the vicinity of that type locality and is approximate — the description gives a village reference rather than precise coordinates. The species is also reported in the aquarium trade from the Lago das Cobras in the rio Pacaás Novos drainage near Guajará-Mirim, Rondônia.

The Guaporé is the key to the fish's biology. Unlike most rivers of the Bolivian lowlands, it originates on the Brazilian Shield rather than in the Andean foreland, and so it runs as a nutrient-poor, highly transparent clearwater river with a slightly acid pH and very low dissolved-solid load — a chemistry quite unlike the turbid, ion-rich whitewater of the neighbouring Mamoré and Beni. Staeck and Schindler describe sororcula as a lentic-adapted, comparatively tolerant species living in clearwater, whitewater, or mixtures of the two. It occupies the banks of lagoons and the littoral margins of rivers in extremely shallow water — a depth of roughly 2–15.5 in — favouring either a thick blanket of dead leaves on the bank bottom or stands of submerged terrestrial and aquatic vegetation, with population density tracking the amount of such cover closely. Field measurements at collecting sites in the Guaporé and San Martín gave pH 6.2-6.7, total and temporary hardness below 1°dH, electrical conductivity of just 5-20 µS/cm, and water temperature 75–82 °F — very soft, very acidic, very dilute water.

Feeding

No quantitative diet study has been published for Apistogramma sororcula, and the original description does not analyse gut contents, so its trophic ecology must be inferred from the genus and from where it lives. Apistogramma are small benthic micropredators that pick and sift through the upper film of soft substrate, leaf litter, and detritus for tiny aquatic invertebrates — chironomid and other insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms, and the associated meiofauna. For sororcula that foraging arena is, very specifically, the thick mats of waterlogged dead leaves and tangles of submerged vegetation along shallow lagoon and river margins, the same structure that provides its cover. The fish's marked preference for leaf-litter beds, where 'the highest population density occurs where a thick layer of dead leaves provides plenty of cover and protection,' points to a life spent working the interstitial fauna of decomposing litter rather than open sand or water column. Treat any more specific dietary claim as unconfirmed.

Mating

Observations reported by Staeck and Schindler were made under aquarium conditions; the wild mating system has not been documented directly. In captivity Apistogramma sororcula is a polygynous cave spawner. A male defends a territory that contains several potential spawning sites, and each of those sites may become the focus of a smaller territory held by an individual female — the classic harem-type arrangement of the cacatuoides-group dwarf cichlids, in which one large, ornamented male oversees the territories of several females. Mate choice in Apistogramma is strongly visual, and the authors note that the elaborate, intensified caudal bar pattern males display in front of females during courtship is exactly the trait that differs between sororcula and its sister species — a difference that may itself act as a reproductive barrier keeping the two from interbreeding where their ranges approach. After spawning the pair bond effectively dissolves: the female takes sole charge of the brood and drives the male away from the immediate vicinity of the spawning site.

Breeding

Apistogramma sororcula is a maternal cave spawner. As in other cave-brooding dwarf cichlids, the female places her eggs on the underside of a horizontal surface — in aquaria the preferred site is the underside of a stout plant leaf, a stand-in for the sheltered cavities and litter the fish uses in the wild. At a water temperature of about 81 °F the eggs hatch roughly three days after spawning, and the larvae become free-swimming approximately five days after that. No clutch count has been published for Apistogramma sororcula specifically; as a genus-typical reference, cacatuoides-complex females are reported by aquarium breeders to lay on the order of 30 to 100 eggs per spawn (around 40 is a commonly cited figure for the closely allied Apistogramma cacatuoides), and sororcula's brood is expected to fall in that range. Parental care is exclusively maternal: the brilliantly lemon-yellow female tends and guards the wrigglers and free-swimming fry, while the male contributes only indirectly, by defending the outer territory against predators rather than attending the brood itself.

In the wild, the description suggests the species times reproduction to the flood pulse. During the high-water season the river floods into the riparian forest and inundates the marginal vegetation, and the authors infer that sororcula breeds in this flooded riparian forest; as the dry season returns and water levels fall rapidly, the still-subadult fish abandon the drying forest floor and retreat to the main channel. Beyond this seasonal sketch, the natural spawning behaviour has not been studied.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma sororcula is rarely kept. It turns up in specialist importations from Bolivia and the Rondônia border region of Brazil, and a small number of German and Central-European hobbyists maintained it before its formal description under the label 'Apistogramma sp. Guaporé' or 'Apistogramma cf. staecki,' but it has never entered wide circulation and is not a fish you will find in a general pet shop. Anyone keeping it is most likely working from a dedicated Apistogramma breeder or a hobbyist who already breeds the related Apistogramma staecki or Apistogramma cacatuoides. Treat all the husbandry below as generalizing from the cacatuoides complex where sororcula-specific keeper records are thin.

A tank of 15–20 US gal (roughly 80 × 40 × 15.5 in) is adequate for a single harem — one male with one or two females — and a slightly larger footprint is better if you intend to keep a pair alongside dither fish. The substrate should be fine, pale river sand, which the fish will sift through while foraging; cover it generously with dead, dried leaf litter (Indian almond, beech, and oak leaves all work and release the humic acids that condition the water toward the species' natural chemistry). Driftwood roots and pieces of bogwood anchored to give shaded recesses are important structural elements. Spawning caves are the critical furnishing: flat roof-tiles, unglazed ceramic caves, and coconut shell halves placed on or partially buried in the sand all work, and you should provide at least two per female so that territorial females have some choice. Dense plantings of small Java fern, Anubias nana, or floating plants are useful for reducing overhead light and breaking sightlines between females.

Water chemistry must match the species' field measurements closely. The natural collection sites record pH 6.2–6.7, total hardness below 1 °dH, conductivity of 5–20 µS/cm, and temperature 75–82 °F. In practical terms this means using RO water, either pure or cut with a small amount of tap water, and conditioning it lightly with peat or alder cones; hardness above 4–5 °dH and pH above 7.0 can suppress breeding and, over time, compromise fish health. Temperature in the lower part of the range (75–77 °F) suits maintenance; raising it to 81–82 °F during a simulated wet-season period — combined with frequent small water changes with slightly cooler water — is a standard trigger for spawning in cacatuoides-complex fish. Filtration should deliver a gentle, low-velocity flow; these fish live in practically still, shallow lagoon margins in the wild and will be stressed by strong turbulence. A small sponge filter or a slow-running hang-on with baffled return is ideal.

Tankmate selection matters. Within the species, the polygynous harem system means that two females in a small tank will fight unless the space is broken up well enough that each can claim her own spawning site without constant visual contact with the other. A single male per tank is non-negotiable. Good dither fish for this size and chemistry requirement are small, soft-water tetras — Paracheirodon axelrodi, Hemigrammus bleheri, or Nannostomus species — whose movement in the water column signals to the Apistogramma that the open area is safe. Avoid anything large or aggressive, including other dwarf cichlids that compete for the same substrate and territories. Bottom-dwelling armoured catfish such as small Corydoras or Otocinclus are sometimes included and are generally compatible at low densities as long as caves are not monopolised.

Sexing adults is straightforward in good light: males are noticeably larger with the produced dorsal lappets, long filamentous pelvic fins, and the characteristic caudal pattern of up to twelve narrow dark bars on a truncate fin with short streamers; females are smaller and plainer, and become unmistakable when guarding fry in breeding dress — a brilliant lemon yellow with a black suborbital blotch. Juveniles under about 1 in are difficult to sex reliably. Because parental care is entirely maternal, the male should be removable if the female becomes severely harassed in a small tank, though in a well-furnished tank with adequate cover this is usually not necessary. The species is not inherently difficult for a keeper already experienced with softwater Apistogramma — its main demands are consistent soft, acid water, plenty of cover and leaf litter, and a calm, low-flow environment. The common mistake with the cacatuoides group in general is keeping fish in water that is too hard and too alkaline; for a clearwater specialist like sororcula, that error is compounded by the fish's natural origin in some of the most ion-poor water in the Bolivian Amazon.

Conservation

Apistogramma sororcula has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it carries no published assessment and does not appear in the Red List database, so its status is Not Evaluated (NE); FishBase likewise lists no IUCN category for the species. That gap is unsurprising for a fish formally named only in 2016 and still absent from GBIF: the basic distributional and population data a formal assessment would draw on simply have not been compiled. It is not listed under CITES.

What little can be said about its prospects is indirect. The species is a narrow-range endemic of the rio Guaporé / río Iténez basin, restricted to the very shallow, leaf-litter-rich margins of lagoons and rivers, and it depends closely on that bankside cover — a microhabitat vulnerable to deforestation, riparian clearance, and the sedimentation and agricultural pressures spreading across the Guaporé borderlands of Beni and Mato Grosso. On the other hand, Staeck and Schindler characterize it as comparatively tolerant of a range of physicochemical conditions, and it is collected for the ornamental trade across several localities, which argues for a reasonably widespread population within its basin. In the absence of any field assessment, the honest position is that its conservation status is genuinely unknown.
