Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Aulonocara koningsi is a small peacock cichlid found nowhere on Earth but the reefs of a single offshore island in Lake Malawi. Patrick Tawil described it in 2003 and named it for Ad Konings, the field naturalist who had done more than anyone to document Malawi's sand-dwelling peacocks. Like the rest of its genus it is a quiet sand-hunter: it cruises the thin substrate between the boulders, chin lowered, listening through enlarged sensory canals for the twitch of buried invertebrates rather than searching for them by eye. The breeding males are an electric, near-uniform blue, which is exactly why the fish reached the aquarium trade as the 'Blue Regal' or 'Mbenji' peacock long before most hobbyists could spell its describer's name.

Taxonomy & naming

Aulonocara koningsi was described by the French cichlid specialist Patrick Tawil in 2003, in the French aquarium-science annual L'an Cichlidé (volume 3, pages 89-98), under the original combination Aulonocara koningsi. The paper's title frames the fish plainly as a new species 'apparenté à Aulonocara stuartgranti' — a close relative of Aulonocara stuartgranti — and Tawil placed it in what hobbyists and the Cichlid Room Companion call the stuartgranti species group. The holotype is held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris under register MNHN 2003-1086, and the act is registered in ZooBank. The type locality is stated, in Tawil's French, as 'l'île de Mbenji, lac Malawi' — Mbenji Island, in the southern half of Lake Malawi. The genus Aulonocara was erected by C. Tate Regan in 1922; it is one of the lake's roughly two dozen peacock species, a largely sand- and intermediate-zone lineage diagnosed by the conspicuously widened cephalic lateral-line canals that give the group both its scientific name and its feeding style. Several similar peacocks occur in the same waters and have long muddled the trade: Aulonocara koningsi is one of a cluster of blue, Mbenji-area Aulonocara, and aquarium fish sold simply as 'Mbenji peacock' or 'Blue Regal' have at times mixed this species with Aulonocara stuartgranti and with undescribed Mbenji forms. The valid name, authority and Mbenji-only distribution are corroborated by FishBase, Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and GBIF; no junior synonyms are listed.

Morphology

This is a small peacock by any measure. FishBase records a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length (the snout-to-tail-base measurement), so an adult male in the lake is a fish of roughly 5–5.5 in including the tail; well-fed aquarium males are routinely reported a little larger. The body is the typical Aulonocara shape — moderately deep, laterally compressed, fusiform — but Tawil singled out a rounded dorsal head profile, concave in front in mature males, with a relatively large head carrying well-developed mandibular, lachrymal and preopercular sensory pores. Fin counts run to 15-16 dorsal spines and 8-11 soft rays, with three anal spines and 6-8 anal soft rays. The sexes are strongly dimorphic. A territorial male is essentially blue all over — body, head and fins — with yellow striae radiating across the caudal fin, faintly yellow lower flanks toward the tail, a white-edged dorsal with a black submarginal band, and reddish-brown eyes; tellingly for a peacock, the egg-spots on the anal fin are absent or strongly reduced, one of the features Tawil used to separate it. Females, juveniles and non-territorial males are a cryptic brown-grey marked with six to eight dark vertical bars (sometimes fused or V-shaped) and two or three round spots along the flank, one of them sitting on the caudal peduncle; ripe females may carry whitish spots on the unpaired fins and darken or pale with mood and light. The near-uniform blue male and the reduced anal egg-spots are the most reliable visual cues that separate koningsi from the yellow-bodied Maleri peacocks and from look-alike blue stuartgranti variants of the same region.

Habitat

Aulonocara koningsi is a lacustrine endemic in the strict sense: it is known only from the waters around Mbenji Island, a small rocky island group rising from the central-western basin of Lake Malawi at roughly 12.06 degrees south, 34.59 degrees east. FishBase gives a depth range of about 3 to 25 metres. Within that band the fish keeps to the intermediate zone — the transitional habitat where the island's boulder slopes give way to open sand — rather than the bare offshore flats or the rock faces themselves. Like most peacocks it works the sandy patches tucked between rocks, which is also where it shelters and breeds. Lake Malawi itself sets the water chemistry: it is a warm, strongly buffered rift lake with surface temperatures around the mid-20s Celsius, a high pH (commonly 7.7-8.6) and moderate hardness, conditions that hold remarkably steady in the well-mixed upper layer the fish inhabits. Mbenji's standing as a long-protected traditional fishing reserve, where the surrounding community has limited extraction for generations, has helped keep its reef habitat — and its narrow-range endemics like this one — comparatively intact.

Feeding

Peacocks are sand-sifting invertivores, and koningsi feeds the way its genus does: it patrols the sandy gaps between rocks and takes small invertebrates from the substrate, FishBase placing it at an estimated trophic level near 3.5. The mechanics are the genuinely remarkable part, and they are why the genus is named for its head. Aulonocara carry greatly enlarged, open lateral-line canals on the lower jaw and face. Working with the close relative Aulonocara stuartgranti, Jacqueline Webb's group at the University of Rhode Island showed experimentally that these fish can locate buried, tethered prey using the lateral line alone, in the dark, with no help from vision — gliding chin-down over the sand 'like a metal detector', as the team put it, and snapping down on the faint hydrodynamic signal of a twitching invertebrate before it can be seen. That sensory trick lets the peacocks exploit a food supply — the small crustaceans, insect larvae and other meiofauna hidden in the sand — that purely sight-feeding cichlids cannot efficiently reach, and it is presumably how koningsi makes a living on the thin sand patches of the Mbenji intermediate zone. In the lake's community it is therefore a benthic micro-predator of the sand interface rather than a competitor for the algae-covered rock that the mbuna graze.

Mating

Social structure in koningsi is the standard peacock arrangement of dispersed, male-held territories visited by loose groups of females. Tawil's account, summarised in FishBase, has the females moving about in small groups of four or five fish, while individual males hold and defend territories on the sand and excavate beneath the rocks to build a spawning site. A male in breeding condition turns on his full electric-blue coloration to advertise the territory and court passing females; as in other Aulonocara the egg-spot signalling of mbuna is muted here, with the male's whole blue body and his radiating caudal pattern doing the display work. Courtship is the prelude to a brief, female-centred spawning rather than to any lasting pair bond — once eggs are laid the male's role in parental care is over, which is typical of the lake's maternal mouthbrooders.

Breeding

Aulonocara koningsi is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared by essentially all of Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids. The male excavates a spawning burrow beneath a rock and entices a ripe female down to it; she lays a small clutch on the cleaned surface and takes the eggs straight into her mouth, where — in the classic Malawi sequence — fertilisation is completed as she mouths at the egg-dummy markings near the male's vent. She then carries the developing eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, eating nothing, before releasing free-swimming fry. There is no biparental or substrate brood-guarding stage; parental care is entirely the female's and ends not long after the fry are released, after which the young are independent. Clutches are modest, in keeping with the fish's small size and the energetic cost of mouthbrooding — peacock spawns are typically a few dozen eggs rather than the hundreds an open-substrate spawner produces. In aquaria the species breeds readily once a confident male holds a territory and females are in condition; keepers commonly raise successive small batches from a single colony, and the fry are large and easily grown on the usual crushed flake and brine-shrimp nauplii.

In the aquarium

Aulonocara koningsi is kept at about the same level of difficulty as the peacock group in general — manageable for a hobbyist who understands the Lake Malawi chemistry and the social demands of harem cichlids, but not a fish to house in a community tank with soft-water species or with the wrong rift-lake neighbours. A minimum of 40–50 US gal is the practical floor for a stable colony, and 55 US gal or more is better: males grow to roughly 5–5.5 in total length, hold genuine territories, and need room to establish a pecking order without constant damage to subordinate fish. Water should match the lake: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.8–8.6, and moderately hard water — target a general hardness of 10–20 °dH and a carbonate hardness high enough to hold the pH stable. Regular partial water changes of 25–30% weekly are more effective at maintaining stable chemistry than any additive, and the fish are sensitive to accumulated nitrate in a way that excess water volume alone will not cure.

Substrate and furnishing are straightforward but matter to the fish's behaviour. A base of fine pale sand, 2–3 in deep, lets males excavate and display their sand-sifting naturally; bare glass or coarse gravel are stressful and will suppress normal foraging. Large flat-bottomed rocks and small boulder piles give each male a back wall against which to anchor a territory, provide females and non-territorial males with refuge, and give a spawning male something to brood under. A sandy corridor down the centre of the tank, open enough for the male's chin-down hunting runs, is worth building in from the start.

Colony composition matters more with peacocks than with most cichlids. The reliable baseline is one male to three or more females. A lone pair almost always ends badly — the male harasses the female continuously and she cannot escape. Adding a second adult male into an established tank typically triggers relentless fighting unless the tank is very large and the territories are separated by solid rock; most keepers run a single dominant male per enclosure, or build a large enough system that sight lines between males are broken. Suitable tankmates are other Malawi species that occupy different physical space — Malawi catfish of the Synodontis kind for the bottom, or haplochromines that hold the upper-mid water away from the male's sand territory. Mbuna are not good neighbours in a peacock tank: they graze rock and compete for space in ways that unsettle a male trying to hold a sandy territory, and they are fast enough to harass brooding females.

The species' restricted range and striking appearance have given it trade value, and that value is also the source of its principal husbandry problem: hybridisation. Aulonocara koningsi has been crossed in captivity — sometimes deliberately, sometimes through careless mixed-colony housing — with Aulonocara stuartgranti, other Mbenji-area Aulonocara, and blue peacock variants from unrelated locations. The resulting fish look similar to the real article at a glance and circulate under the 'Mbenji', 'Blue Regal', and even 'koningsi' labels. Keepers who want an honest example of the species should source fish from suppliers who maintain clean, documented Mbenji Island locality lines and do not mix variants. There is no reliable way to distinguish F1 hybrids from pure fish by eye once the morphology is blurred, so provenance at the time of purchase is the only protection. Mixing this species with other blue peacocks in the same tank is the single most common mistake keepers make, and the one that most permanently compromises the colony.

Breeding in the aquarium is straightforward once the colony is settled. A confident male in full colour, holding a territory and excavating beneath his rocks, will court ripe females without much encouragement. Females signal readiness by their body condition and by responding to the male's lateral displays rather than fleeing. The female broods alone for approximately three weeks; experienced keepers leave her in the display tank if the colony is calm, or move her to a separate brooding tank in the last week if they want to raise a full batch. Fry released at roughly 0.5 in are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp and fine crushed flake from day one. The diet of adults in captivity should be varied — quality pellet or flake foods, supplemented with frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, or mysis — but the standard caution against feeding heavily with protein-rich live tubifex or regular high-fat foods applies to all Malawi cichlids, where a condition called Malawi bloat (a gut dysbiosis with fast onset) is a recognised keeper risk, particularly in overfed or overcrowded fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Aulonocara koningsi as Least Concern, assessed on 22 June 2018 by Ad Konings and published in 2018. That category sits alongside an unusually tight range: the assessment records this species from the single location of Mbenji Island, with an estimated extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of just about 12 square kilometres. The reasoning for Least Concern rather than a threatened category is local and specific — Mbenji is a long-standing, community-managed traditional fishing reserve, and as Konings has noted in the Cichlid Room Companion, the island is ringed by enough rock that there is little scope for the kind of beach-seine netting that could sweep a sand-dweller off an open shore. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing. The honest caveat is that a single-island endemic with a 12-square-kilometre footprint has essentially no buffer: a localised shock — habitat damage, a change in the fishery's management, targeted ornamental collection of so desirable a blue fish — would bear on the whole world population at once. That sits within the wider strain on Lake Malawi as a whole. Basin-scale reviews, notably Chavula and colleagues' 2023 assessment of the Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa system, document rising sediment and nutrient loading from catchment deforestation and agriculture, heavy and growing fishing pressure, and climate-driven warming and reduced mixing that threaten the productivity of the lake's upper layer — the very stratum the peacocks live in. None of these is recorded as an active decline in koningsi specifically, but they are the backdrop against which the status of every Malawi endemic, however locally secure, should be read.
