Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

"Chitande Type Mozambique" is an undescribed peacock cichlid from the southeastern reaches of Lake Malawi — a fish recognised in the field by Ad Konings but never formally named, with no describing author, no year, and no scientific catalogue entry. It is one of the lake's "Chitande Type" peacocks, a cluster of closely similar sand-dwellers whose females are nearly indistinguishable and whose males carry each population's signature. The Mozambique form is the small one, with breeding males marked by a yellow patch across the neck and shoulder; it is also the most rock-associated of the group, working sand near rocks at depths of fifteen metres and more. It ranges along the southeastern shore from Mozambique into the lake's Tanzanian corner, and should be treated strictly as a documented hobby and field form rather than a described species.

It is an informal taxon recognised in the field and aquarium literature, principally through the work of Ad Konings in his Malawi cichlid books and on the Cichlid Room Companion, and catalogued on the malawi.si species database. The placeholder name follows the standard convention for undescribed Malawi cichlids: the genus Aulonocara, the abbreviation "sp.", and an informal collective-and-locality tag in quotation marks. "Chitande Type" denotes a group of closely similar sand-dwelling peacocks distinguished mainly by the breeding dress of their males and by collection locality, while "Mozambique" marks this form's range along the southeastern shore. Konings places it firmly within Aulonocara on anatomical grounds, since it carries the genus's diagnostic enlarged cephalic sensory pores. Within the Chitande Type group its nearest relative is Aulonocara sp. "Chitande Type Masinje," from which it is separated by subtle differences in male shape and the colour of the shoulder patch. Until a formal revision is published, no authority or date should ever be attached to it.

Morphology

This is a small peacock — the most diminutive of the Chitande Type forms — built on the genus's standard plan of a moderately deep, laterally compressed body and a head bearing the enlarged sensory pores that mark all Aulonocara. Males reach only about 3 in and females about 3 in, smaller than most of the lake's peacocks. Sexual dichromatism is present and is the basis for telling this form from its relatives. Breeding males show a yellow patch across the neck and shoulder against an otherwise restrained body colour; the closely allied Aulonocara sp. "Chitande Type Masinje" differs in being slightly more elongate and in showing a more orange — rather than yellow — patch in the same region. Females and non-breeding individuals are drab, silvery-brown and cryptically marked, and resemble the females of other Chitande Type forms so closely as to be difficult to distinguish. As with the rest of the group, reliable identification rests on a colored, territorial male examined in its home range.

Habitat

Aulonocara sp. "Chitande Type Mozambique" occurs in the southeastern part of Lake Malawi, ranging from Lumbaulo on the Mozambique shore to Hai Reef in the lake's Tanzanian corner, with Londo Bay among its documented localities. Its biotope is intermediate habitat — open sand bordered by rocks — but compared with the other Chitande Type forms it is notably more rock-associated, usually found over sand near rocks at depths of about 49 ft and deeper. That deeper, rock-adjacent distribution sets it slightly apart from the shallower open-sand habits of its relatives. The water is the warm, hard, strongly alkaline medium typical of Lake Malawi's middle and upper water column. Because it is spread across a stretch of the southeastern shore rather than confined to a single reef, it is less narrowly endemic than some Chitande Type forms, and its deeper, rock-proximate habits are thought to give it a measure of natural protection from the netting pressure that threatens shallower sand-dwellers.

Feeding

Aulonocara sp. "Chitande Type Mozambique" is a sand-sifting invertivore, the foraging mode that defines the peacock radiation. It feeds on small invertebrates living in the sand, locating them by detecting the faint movements of buried prey through the enlarged sensory pores on its head. The hunting posture is the genus's signature motionless hover just above the substrate, after which the fish darts down, takes a mouthful of sand, sifts out the edible items and expels the spent grains through the gills and mouth. The diet is the genus-typical menu of small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae and micro-crustaceans worked out of the soft sediment around the rocks it favours. In captivity this means a fine sand bed over which the sifting behaviour is readily displayed, together with a varied diet of fine prepared foods plus small live or frozen invertebrates.

Mating

Like all Lake Malawi haplochromines, this form is polygynous and lek-like, with no pair bond. Males weakly defend territories, and only against other males of their own kind; each territory is centred on a shallow, saucer-shaped spawning depression scraped in the sand, usually near or under rocks. Females are not territorial and forage in schools, visiting a male's territory only when ready to spawn. Courtship is brief and conventional for the genus, with a ripe female approaching a displaying male at his site. Overall aggression is low — a quiet, dispersed social system in keeping with the deeper, rock-adjacent habitat — and the interactions between rival males are settled mainly by display rather than combat.

Breeding

Aulonocara sp. "Chitande Type Mozambique" is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all members of the genus. The male leads a willing female to the shallow spawning depression near rocks; she lays a small batch of eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth, then is drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin and, in attempting to collect these "eggs," takes in milt that fertilises the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She then broods the developing eggs and fry in her mouth, fasting for most of the period, before releasing free-swimming young; there is no male or post-release parental care. Clutch size and brooding duration are not specifically recorded for this small form, but a clutch of a few dozen eggs and a brooding period of roughly three weeks would be typical for a peacock of its size. It is rarely kept, so dedicated captive-breeding accounts are scarce.

In the aquarium

Aulonocara sp. "Chitande Type Mozambique" is rarely kept in aquaria and seldom reaches the trade, partly because its deeper, rock-adjacent distribution makes it difficult to net. When it is available, it appears as wild or wild-descended stock from specialist Malawi importers, and its husbandry should follow the general Chitande Type guidelines.

The tank should provide a fine sand substrate of at least 2 in together with scattered rocks — somewhat more rockwork than the other Chitande Type forms warrant, in keeping with this form's stronger rock association — and ample open sand where a group of females can forage. A footprint of at least 49 in (around 80 US gal) is a sensible minimum. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's middle water column: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH on the alkaline side of neutral (roughly 7.7 to 8.6), and moderately hard to hard general hardness. Prolonged exposure to soft or acidic water causes chronic problems in Malawi cichlids and should be avoided.

The fish is low in aggression and weakly territorial, so it mixes well with other peaceable haps and peacocks, but no more than one male of this form should be kept per tank, and it should not be housed with visually similar Chitande Type peacocks or yellow-shouldered relatives, since mixing risks hybridisation. A single male with several females is the natural and recommended arrangement. Diet should be the standard varied peacock menu — a quality cichlid pellet or flake supplemented with small frozen or live invertebrates such as chironomid larvae and brine shrimp — with fatty foods avoided, as they predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat.

Conservation

Aulonocara sp. "Chitande Type Mozambique" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind — no status, no category, no published criteria. Unlike the single-reef Chitande Type forms, this one ranges across a stretch of the southeastern shore from Mozambique into Tanzanian waters, which gives it a broader distribution and a measure of resilience. It is also thought to be relatively safe from overfishing because its deeper distribution and proximity to rocks make it difficult to net for the aquarium trade. None of that amounts to a formal status, however; the honest position is simply that it is unassessed, and no fabricated conservation category should ever be attached to it.
