Taxonomy & naming
Aulonocara sp. "Jalo" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has yet published a description of it. It is instead an informal taxon recognised in the aquarium and field literature, principally through the work of Ad Konings, who documents it in his Malawi cichlid books and on the Cichlid Room Companion. The placeholder name follows the standard convention for undescribed cichlids — the genus, the abbreviation "sp." (species), and a trade or collection name in quotation marks, here taken directly from the fish's only known home, Jalo Reef near Nkhotakota. Konings places it firmly within Aulonocara on anatomical grounds: it carries the genus's diagnostic enlarged cephalic sensory pores, the widened lateral-line canals of the head that define the peacocks. In male breeding colour it most closely resembles the yellow form of Aulonocara stuartgranti, and it is to that broad stuartgranti-type assemblage that it is usually allied. Two features set it apart, however — a noticeably larger mouth than typical Aulonocara and somewhat less-enlarged head pores — and Konings has noted that its biology is unusual enough that some have questioned whether it belongs in the genus at all, a doubt he rejects on the strength of its anatomy. Until a formal revision is published, it should be regarded strictly as a Konings-recognised undescribed form, and no authority or date should be attached to it.
Morphology
This is a medium-sized peacock. Field references following Konings give males to about 4.5 in and females to roughly 4 in, the usual peacock arrangement in which males run a little larger. The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed haplochromine form shared across the genus, and the head bears the enlarged sensory pores that mark all Aulonocara — though in this form the pores are reported to be less strongly developed than in the open-sand peacocks. The most distinctive structural feature is the mouth, which is comparatively large; large individuals of the deep-water Aulonocara sp. "Trematocranus Masinje" show a similarly enlarged mouth, and the two are sometimes mentioned together for that reason. Sexual dichromatism is present and is the basis for telling the fish apart from look-alikes. Breeding males carry a colour pattern that strongly recalls the yellow form of Aulonocara stuartgranti; the surest way to separate them is the mouth, since the stuartgranti forms have a distinctly smaller one. Females and non-breeding individuals are far plainer, drab and cryptically marked, and are rarely seen at all because they remain hidden in caves.
Habitat
Aulonocara sp. "Jalo" is one of Lake Malawi's narrowest endemics, known only from Jalo Reef, a deep rocky reef lying off the shore north of Nkhotakota on the central-western side of the lake. Its biotope is unusual for a peacock: it lives among large boulders that form the reef at around 49 ft depth, with the surrounding sand floor beginning only at unknown depths well below 197 ft. Small patches of sand occur between the rocks, covered with a thick layer of fine sediment, and water visibility over the reef is poor throughout the year. This is a fundamentally rock- and cave-associated existence rather than the open-sand habitat of most peacocks. The water is the warm, hard, strongly alkaline medium typical of Malawi's rocky zones. Because the entire known population is confined to this one reef and is reported to be very small, the form is potentially vulnerable to local extinction even though it has not been formally assessed.
Feeding
Aulonocara sp. "Jalo" is a sand-and-cave invertivore, but it feeds in a way that sets it apart from the rest of the genus. Konings reports that, uniquely among Aulonocara, this fish has never been observed adopting the classic "listening to the sand" posture — the motionless hover a centimetre above the substrate, head pores registering the faint movements of buried prey, that defines peacock foraging. Instead it appears to take its food, principally insect larvae and crustaceans, from within the dark caves it inhabits, probably gleaning invertebrates from the sediment and rock surfaces inside. Its head pores are less enlarged than those of the open-sand peacocks, which is consistent with a fish that relies less on that sensory hunting mode. The diet itself remains the genus-typical menu of small benthic invertebrates; it is the method, not the prey, that is anomalous.
Mating
Social and breeding behaviour in this form is poorly known, a direct consequence of how rarely the fish is seen. It appears to live a largely solitary, cave-oriented life. Males in breeding colour are only occasionally observed, usually as wandering individuals moving between caves rather than as a tight lek of neighbouring territory-holders. Females are rarely encountered at all and are thought to remain hidden inside caves for most of the time. Interactions between individuals are seldom witnessed, and aggression appears low — a quiet, dispersed social system quite unlike the busy open-sand leks of peacocks such as Aulonocara baenschi. What courtship has been inferred follows the general haplochromine pattern, with ripe females visiting colour-holding males, but the details have not been documented in the wild.
Breeding
Like all Lake Malawi haplochromines, Aulonocara sp. "Jalo" is understood to be a maternal mouthbrooder, in which the female takes the eggs into her mouth immediately after laying and broods them there until the fry are free-swimming, with no male or post-release parental care. Beyond that genus-level certainty, the specifics of its reproduction in the wild are essentially undocumented: spawning sites, clutch size, and brooding period have not been described, because breeding males are seen only sporadically and females hardly at all. The reasonable expectation, by analogy with other cave-associated peacocks, is that spawning takes place inside a cave rather than over open sand, but this has not been confirmed by direct observation. The form is rarely kept and rarely bred in captivity, so even aquarium accounts of its reproduction are scarce.
In the aquarium
Aulonocara sp. "Jalo" is an uncommon fish in the hobby. It is collected only in small numbers from its single reef and does not appear in the trade with anything like the frequency of the popular sand-dwelling peacocks, so most keepers will never encounter it. When it is kept, its requirements follow the general template for a rock- and cave-associated Lake Malawi cichlid rather than for an open-sand peacock.
The tank should provide a fine sand substrate together with generous rockwork arranged to form caves and shaded retreats, since this is a fish that naturally shelters among boulders rather than cruising open flats. A footprint of at least 47 in is sensible, with more space welcome given how dispersed and cave-bound the species is. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's rocky zones: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH on the alkaline side of neutral (roughly 7.8 to 8.6), and moderately hard to hard general hardness. Prolonged exposure to soft or acidic water causes chronic problems in Malawi cichlids and should be avoided.
Because so little is documented about its captive behaviour, a keeper should observe carefully rather than assume it will behave like a typical peacock. It is reported to be low in aggression and solitary in habit, which suggests it will not dominate a community of robust Malawi haps and peacocks, but a single male with several females remains the safest arrangement. Diet should be the standard varied peacock menu — a quality cichlid pellet or flake supplemented with small frozen or live invertebrates such as chironomid larvae and brine shrimp — bearing in mind that this fish takes its food from caves and sediment rather than by sifting open sand. Fatty foods should be avoided, as they predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat.
Conservation
Aulonocara sp. "Jalo" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and because it is an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind — no status, no category, no published criteria. That absence should not be read as reassurance. The fish is endemic to a single reef, Jalo Reef, and the known population is described as very small. A species with so restricted a range is inherently exposed to local extinction, whether through over-collection for the trade, habitat disturbance, or chance events on the one reef where it lives. The conservative position, and the one taken in the field literature, is that its limited range makes it potentially vulnerable and that its small, single-locality population warrants caution. No fabricated conservation status should ever be attached to it; the honest statement is simply that it is unassessed, narrowly endemic, and rare.
