Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

"Trematocranus Masinje" is an undescribed, cave-dwelling peacock cichlid from Lake Malawi — recognised in the field by Ad Konings but never formally named, with no describing author, no year, and no scientific catalogue entry. It is one of the lake's strangest and least-seen peacocks: a dark, big-mouthed fish that lives only at great depth, hiding in small caves within terraced rocky structures more than twenty metres down and most often around thirty-five. Its placeholder name records an old confusion with the unrelated genus Trematocranus, but its enlarged head pores place it squarely among the Aulonocara peacocks. Very rare, very deep, and among the least vivid of the cave peacocks, it should be treated strictly as a documented field form rather than a described species.

Taxonomy & naming

Aulonocara sp. "Trematocranus Masinje" is not a formally described species. It has no binomial scientific name, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has yet published a description of it. It is an informal taxon recognised in the field and aquarium literature, principally through the work of Ad Konings in his Malawi cichlid books and on the Cichlid Room Companion, and catalogued on the malawi.si species database. The placeholder name follows the standard convention for undescribed Malawi cichlids: the genus Aulonocara, the abbreviation "sp.", and an informal tag in quotation marks. That tag is a fossil of past uncertainty — the fish was at one time associated with the genus Trematocranus, and "Masinje" records a collection area on the lake's southeastern shore — but Konings places it firmly within Aulonocara on anatomical grounds, since it carries the genus's diagnostic enlarged cephalic sensory pores. Its notably large mouth recalls that of Aulonocara sp. "Jalo," another atypical cave-dwelling peacock, and the two are sometimes mentioned together for that reason. Until a formal revision is published, no authority or date should ever be attached to it.

Morphology

This is a cave-dwelling peacock built on the genus's standard plan — a moderately deep, laterally compressed haplochromine body and a head carrying the enlarged sensory pores that define all Aulonocara — but distinguished by a notably large mouth, a feature it shares with the cave-dwelling Aulonocara sp. "Jalo." Its precise adult dimensions are not well documented, but it is a medium-sized peacock in line with others of its habit. Its most striking feature is its coloration, or rather its lack of it: this is a dark fish, and it has one of the least vivid colour patterns of any cave-dwelling member of the genus, a restraint in keeping with its lightless, deep-water existence. Sexual dichromatism is present in the general peacock manner, with males more strongly coloured than females, but because the fish is so rarely observed and the sexes are so seldom seen together, the details of its dimorphism are poorly recorded. Females in particular appear to remain hidden for most of the day and are rarely encountered.

Habitat

Aulonocara sp. "Trematocranus Masinje" lives on steep rocky coastline with terraced intermediate habitat, and it is a creature of great depth: it is found below 66 ft and most commonly around 115 ft, hiding in small caves within the deep rocky structures. This is a fundamentally cave- and rock-associated existence rather than the open-sand habitat of the typical peacock. Its known range is very narrow — restricted to a small section of the east coast north of the Nsinje River in Malawi and south of Charley's Bay in Mozambique, with Chiofu Bay among its documented localities. The water there is the warm, hard, strongly alkaline medium typical of Lake Malawi's deeper rocky zones, with the low light and stable conditions of the deep terraces. Because the fish is confined to a small stretch of coast and occurs only at considerable depth, it is genuinely rare and seldom seen by divers.

Feeding

Aulonocara sp. "Trematocranus Masinje" is a carnivore that feeds, like the rest of the genus, on small invertebrates living in the sand, detecting them with the enlarged cephalic sensory pores that give the peacocks their name. Despite its cave-bound life, it does forage on the open substrate: males are often observed feeding outside their caves during the morning hours, presumably working the sand patches among the deep rocks for buried prey before retreating again to shelter. The enlarged sensory pores let it register the faint movements of invertebrates beneath the surface even in the dim light of its deep habitat. The diet is the genus-typical menu of small benthic invertebrates; what is unusual is the setting — a deep, rocky, cave-strewn terrace rather than a sunlit sand flat.

Mating

Like all Lake Malawi haplochromines, this form is understood to be polygynous, with no pair bond. Males defend small caves as spawning sites and show aggression only toward other males of their own kind. Females are rarely observed and appear to remain hidden inside caves and crevices for most of the day, emerging seldom; as a result, the encounters between the sexes are hardly ever witnessed, and the social system is inferred to be a quiet, dispersed, cave-centred one rather than an open lek. What courtship has been surmised follows the general haplochromine pattern, with a ripe female visiting a colour-holding male at his cave, but the details have not been documented in the wild because the fish is so rarely seen at all.

Breeding

Aulonocara sp. "Trematocranus Masinje" is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all members of the genus: the female takes the eggs into her mouth immediately after laying and broods them there until the fry are free-swimming, with no male or post-release parental care. Males defend small caves as spawning sites, so spawning is presumed to take place within a cave rather than over open sand. Beyond that, the specifics of its reproduction — clutch size, brooding period, fry development — are essentially undocumented, a direct consequence of how rarely the fish is seen and how hidden its females remain. The form is effectively never kept or bred in captivity, so even aquarium accounts of its reproduction are absent.

In the aquarium

Aulonocara sp. "Trematocranus Masinje" is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It lives at great depth in a narrow stretch of coast, it is very rare, and it is hardly ever collected, so the overwhelming majority of keepers will never see one. There is no established body of husbandry experience for it, and any keeping advice can only be extrapolated from the requirements of other deep, cave-dwelling Malawi cichlids.

Should a specimen ever reach a hobbyist, its tank would need to depart sharply from the open-sand peacock template. It would require generous rockwork arranged to form genuine caves and shaded, dark retreats, since this is a fish that shelters in deep cave structures rather than cruising open flats, together with a fine sand floor where it can forage. A footprint of at least 49 in is sensible, with more space welcome. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's deeper rocky zones: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH on the alkaline side of neutral (roughly 7.7 to 8.6), and moderately hard to hard general hardness; the deep, stable conditions of its natural habitat suggest it would not tolerate swings well.

Because nothing is documented about its captive behaviour, a keeper would have to observe carefully rather than assume it will behave like a familiar peacock. It is reported to be aggressive only toward other males of its own kind, which suggests it would not dominate a robust community, but a single male with several females remains the safest arrangement. Diet should be the standard varied carnivore-leaning peacock menu — a quality cichlid pellet or flake supplemented with small frozen or live invertebrates such as chironomid larvae and brine shrimp — bearing in mind that this fish takes its food from sand among deep rocks. Fatty foods should be avoided, as they predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat.

Conservation

Aulonocara sp. "Trematocranus Masinje" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind — no status, no category, no published criteria. The fish is genuinely rare, confined to a small section of the east coast straddling the Malawi-Mozambique border and occurring only at considerable depth. Its great-depth, cave-bound habits give it natural protection from the netting that threatens shallow-water sand-dwellers — it is essentially out of reach of the ornamental trade — but a narrow range always leaves a population exposed to localised disturbance. The honest position is simply that it is unassessed, narrowly distributed, and rare, and that no fabricated conservation status should ever be attached to it.
