Australoheros forquilha is a small, deep-bodied chanchito cichlid of the upper and middle Río Uruguay drainage, on the subtropical grassland frontier of southern Brazil and (historically) northern Argentina. Described only in 2008, it is the namesake of its own species group within the genus, set apart from its relatives by a checkerboard of dark spots across the dorsal, anal and caudal fins and a small downward-pointing mouth. Like every Australoheros it is a temperate, biparental substrate spawner rather than a warm-water Amazonian — a hardy little 'chanchito' built for streams that turn genuinely cold in winter, and one whose true range is still unsettled enough that the IUCN can only call it Data Deficient.

Taxonomy & naming

Australoheros forquilha was described by the Czech ichthyologist Oldřich Říčan and the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 2008, in their monograph on the Australoheros species of the Uruguay and Paraná River drainages (Zootaxa 1724: 1–51, the description on page 14, figured as Fig. 4). It was one of four species erected as new in that paper, alongside Australoheros charrua, Australoheros minuano and Australoheros guarani, and had circulated beforehand under the working label 'Australoheros sp. Forquilha'. The holotype (MCP 13936, in the fish collection of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre) was taken in the Rio Forquilha — a tributary of the upper Río Uruguay — on the road from Maximiliano de Almeida to Machadinho, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with a series of paratypes from the same basin held at the MCP and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM). The genus Australoheros itself was raised by Říčan & Kullander in 2006 to hold the southern-South-American chanchitos formerly lumped in Cichlasoma; the name joins Latin australis, 'southern', to Heros, the type genus of the tribe Heroini. In the 2008 revision the authors sorted the genus into four species groups based on morphology and cytochrome-b sequence, and forquilha lends its name to the forquilha group, which pairs it with its allopatric sister species Australoheros tembe of the Río Paraná system. The Catalog of Fishes accepts the name as valid and treats the species as restricted to the upper Uruguay basin in Brazil.

Morphology

Australoheros forquilha is a small, deep-bodied and laterally compressed cichlid of typical chanchito build. FishBase lists a maximum of 4.5 in standard length, a figure drawn from the preserved type series rather than from large aquarium fish, so a well-grown adult is a hand-sized cichlid of roughly that order rather than a giant. Meristically it carries 15–16 dorsal spines and 9–11 dorsal soft rays, 5–7 anal spines and 7–9 anal soft rays, and 26–28 vertebrae. Říčan & Kullander diagnose it by a suite of fine characters: dark markings below the eye along the postero-lateral border of the suborbital series; a distinctive checkerboard of spots scattered across the dorsal, anal and caudal fins; more than fourteen caudal vertebrae in at least some specimens; 25–26 (rather than 24–25) E0-row scales; a downward-pointing, subterminal mouth; the shortest interorbital and longest preorbital distances in the genus; and a unique scale cover at the base of the dorsal fin in which two cover scales correspond to a single transverse scale row. The ground colour follows the genus pattern — an olive-to-yellowish body crossed by dark vertical bars and a midlateral stripe and blotch — with the spotted fins its most quickly recognised feature. Sexual dimorphism has not been described specifically for forquilha; the value recorded here is the well-documented genus pattern, in which dominant males grow larger and develop longer, more produced unpaired fins while ripe females are rounder-bodied and assume the dark vertical-barred breeding livery, and should be read as genus-typical rather than measured for this species.

Habitat

The species lives in the tributaries of the Río Uruguay along the subtropical-to-temperate frontier of southern South America. The original description and the Catalog of Fishes place it in the upper Uruguay drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; the IUCN's 2020 assessment maps it more broadly across the middle and upper Uruguay basin in both Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina) and Argentina, while explicitly cautioning that its wider distribution is highly uncertain. That uncertainty is genuine — a 2012 checklist (Koerber) concluded the species is no longer reliably known from Argentina, so the Brazilian upper Uruguay is the only range that all sources agree on. These are not Amazonian waters: they drain the campos and Atlantic-forest highlands of southern Brazil, where winters are cool and seasonal. The type material came from a named arroyo (the Rio Forquilha), and the species is a benthopelagic inhabitant of such small rivers and streams. FishBase publishes no depth range and no in-situ temperature, pH or hardness for forquilha, and field chemistry has not been tabulated; the temperature and pH values shown here are the operating ranges documented for the genus's cold-tolerant southern chanchitos (roughly 61–82 °F, pH about 6–8), and the depth is given as a shallow stream band (about 0–7 ft) reflecting the documented small-watercourse habitat rather than a measured figure — both are flagged as habitat- and genus-typical inferences, not species measurements.

Feeding

No dedicated diet study has been published for Australoheros forquilha, so its feeding ecology is read from FishBase and from the consistent habits of its genus. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, the band of a small omnivore that leans toward animal prey, and CRC accounts of congeners describe Australoheros broadly as insectivorous. The downward-pointing, subterminal mouth that helps diagnose the species is the mouth of a benthic forager: it works the stream bottom and the margins of submerged vegetation, taking aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates and picking up incidental algae, plant fragments and detritus while grubbing through the substrate. Its jaw teeth are the caniniform grasping type of a generalist that dislodges and seizes small prey rather than crushing snails or rasping algae from rock. In its grassland streams it functions as a mid-level benthic omnivore — neither a specialist predator nor a dedicated herbivore.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour has not been described for Australoheros forquilha from the wild, but the genus is consistent enough that the broad picture is clear, and it is the standard chanchito pattern. Australoheros are pair-forming, territorial substrate spawners: a male and female establish and jointly defend a territory, and courtship is accompanied by the intensified dark vertical-barred breeding dress typical of the genus. Pairs become markedly more site-attached and aggressive as spawning approaches, excluding conspecifics and other fishes from the chosen patch of bottom. As with related chanchitos, the natural trigger is seasonal — the cooling of the southern winter followed by warming and the spring rains brings fish into condition — and keepers reproduce this with a cool resting period followed by a temperature rise. The species' own narrow, contested range hints that, like its relatives, it is allopatric with its closest kin (Říčan & Kullander noted that sister species in this genus do not occur together), so in the wild its breeding territories are unlikely to be contested by congeners.

Breeding

Australoheros forquilha is, on all available evidence, a biparental open substrate spawner like the rest of its genus; the spawning of forquilha specifically has not been documented, so the figures here are labelled genus-typical and drawn from the well-known breeding of congeners such as Australoheros facetus. Those relatives deposit a clutch of a few hundred adhesive eggs — commonly on the order of 200–500, and up to roughly a thousand in large, well-conditioned females — on a cleaned firm surface such as a flat stone, a root or the floor of a shallow pit. Both parents share care: the female tends and fans the eggs while the male patrols and defends the territory, and after the eggs hatch the free-swimming fry are guarded and shepherded by the pair, herded between feeding pits in the substrate. Captive accounts of the southern chanchitos report spawning cued by raising the temperature into the high 20s °C after a cooler rest, mimicking the seasonal warming of the natural habitat; the fry are not difficult to raise on small live and prepared foods once the parents have brought them up. Because the genus is cool-tolerant, forquilha would, like Australoheros facetus, be expected to breed without a heater in many indoor climates, using the winter cool-down itself as the conditioning phase.

In the aquarium

Australoheros forquilha is almost never seen in the hobby. It was described only in 2008, its range is contested and confined to a corner of southern Brazil, and it has not entered commercial channels in any meaningful quantity. Where it does appear — usually through specialist importers or in the collections of Uruguay-basin enthusiasts in South America and Europe — it is kept very much like the better-known southern chanchitos, and that genus-level care is the honest basis for what follows. Treat any detail below as genus-typical inference drawn from congeners such as Australoheros facetus and Australoheros scitulus, flagged as such, rather than from first-hand accounts of forquilha itself.

At 4.5 in standard length, forquilha is a modest-sized cichlid that fits comfortably into a tank of 25–30 US gal for a single pair, though a grow-out or community setup benefits from 40–55 US gal or more, especially when breeding. The substrate should be sand or fine gravel: this is a benthic forager with a downward-pointing mouth that roots through soft bottom material in search of invertebrates, and coarse gravel or bare glass does not suit it. Provide flat stones, broken clay pots or smooth slate as potential spawning surfaces — the fish will select and clean a site when conditioning for breeding — and include some pieces of driftwood and robust potted plants or terracotta pots for visual cover. A tight-fitting lid is sensible; like many cichlids, chanchitos can jump when startled.

The water chemistry is undemanding and flexible, matching the variable streams of southern Brazil. Temperature should sit between about 20 and 79 °F for everyday maintenance; the species is cool-tolerant and can handle dips toward 61 °F without distress, which makes it suitable for unheated or minimally heated tanks in temperate indoor climates. pH anywhere from 6.0 to 8.0 is acceptable, and moderate hardness up to around 15 °dH is fine; soft, slightly acidic to neutral water most closely mirrors the upper Uruguay drainage, but this is not an acid-specialist or a hard-water cichlid that requires precise tuning. Good filtration and regular partial water changes matter more than chasing particular chemistry numbers.

Tankmate selection requires some thought. Australoheros is a feisty, territorially inclined cichlid that can become aggressive, especially when guarding eggs or fry, and forquilha has the full genus disposition. Other similarly sized, robust South American cichlids — small geophagines, larger tetras, loricariid catfish — are workable partners in a spacious tank with clear territorial zones. Avoid anything small enough to be eaten, delicate or slow-moving fishes that cannot hold their own against a pair on a nest, and other Australoheros of the opposite or same sex unless the tank is large enough to partition properly. A single breeding pair in a species-only or carefully curated community is a more reliable arrangement than a crowded mixed cichlid tank.

Conditioning for breeding follows the natural seasonal rhythm of the southern hemisphere: keep the fish at the lower end of the temperature range — around 64–68 °F — for several weeks through 'winter', feed them well on live and frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, daphnia, earthworm pieces), and then raise the temperature gradually into the mid-to-upper 20s °C while increasing water-change frequency. The pair will claim a flat surface, clean it meticulously, and lay several hundred small adhesive eggs. Both parents guard the clutch and fry in the typical biparental chanchito fashion: the female fans and tends the eggs while the male polices the territory. The main keeper mistake at this stage is disrupting the parents — remove potential egg-eaters before spawning, not after. Newly free-swimming fry take microworms, baby brine shrimp and finely crushed flake readily. The parents' aggression toward tankmates peaks during fry-guarding and a divider or removal of other inhabitants may be necessary in smaller setups.

Conservation

Australoheros forquilha is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (assessed 4 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). The category is not a verdict of either security or threat but an admission of ignorance: the assessment lists the species as Data Deficient precisely because of the lack of information on its exact range, its population size and the threats acting on it, recording an estimated extent of occurrence of about 45,354 mi² but an unknown population trend and no documented threats or uses. It carries no CITES listing. The unsettled range is the heart of the matter — sources disagree over whether the fish reaches Argentina and Santa Catarina or is confined to the upper Uruguay of Rio Grande do Sul — and resolving those limits is the first thing a future assessment would need. The pressures on its habitat are the familiar ones of southern Brazil's farmed grasslands and forested uplands: agriculture and cattle-ranching with their attendant siltation, riparian clearing, water abstraction and agro-chemical run-off into small streams, and the longer-term reshaping of the Uruguay drainage by hydroelectric dams, of which the upper river has several. None of these is documented as an active threat to this particular cichlid, but for a small, apparently range-restricted stream fish they are exactly the backdrop against which its Data Deficient status should be read — and the reason a proper survey of its distribution and abundance remains an outstanding need.
