Crenicichla minuano is a medium-sized pike cichlid endemic to the middle and upper Uruguay River basin of southern Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. It belongs to the celebrated Crenicichla missioneira species flock — a tight cluster of closely related pike cichlids that diversified in situ within a single subtropical river, evolving distinct feeding specialists in a manner usually associated with the great African lakes rather than a river. Among that flock Crenicichla minuano is the mollusc-cracker: a stout-jawed, isognathous fish whose robust pharyngeal mill lets it crush snails and bivalves, setting it apart from the slender, fish-eating members swimming alongside it on the same rocky shore.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla minuano was described in 1992 by the Brazilian ichthyologist Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena and the Swedish cichlid specialist Sven O. Kullander in their landmark revision of the Crenicichla of the Uruguai (Uruguay) River drainage in Brazil, published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (3(2):97–160). That paper recognized eleven pike cichlids in the Brazilian portion of the river and described seven new species at once, among them minuano. The type locality is the Rio Comandaí, on the road between Porto Xavier and Porto Lucena, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; the holotype (MCP 14321) is housed at the Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia da PUCRS in Porto Alegre, supported by a long series of paratypes (MCP and NRM lots). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists no synonyms — the name has stood unchallenged since description. Within the genus, minuano sits in the subgenus Crenicichla (Lacustria), the species-rich southern-South-American lineage, and more precisely in the Crenicichla missioneira species complex of the upper Uruguay. Lucena and Kullander had placed it near the Crenicichla scotti group on jaw and colour characters, but molecular work by Piálek and colleagues (2012) and the phylogenomic studies of Burress and co-workers (2017, 2018) instead recovered it as a member of the missioneira flock — a monophyletic, recently radiated assemblage. The most recent integrative revision of pike-cichlid classification (Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira & López-Fernández, 2023) split off several Amazonian and Guianan lineages as new genera but explicitly retained the Lacustria radiations, including minuano, within Crenicichla, so the genus name used here is current. The species epithet honours the Minuano, an indigenous people who once inhabited what is now Rio Grande do Sul, and by extension the Minuano — the cold southwesterly wind that sweeps the region in winter.

Morphology

Crenicichla minuano has the elongate, cylindrical, pike-like body shape shared by all members of its genus, but it is a comparatively heavy-headed, blunt-snouted member of the missioneira flock rather than a slender one. FishBase records a maximum total length of about 10 in and a published weight near 204 g, though wild and aquarium fish are commonly seen at a more modest 7–8 in. The single most diagnostic feature is the mouth: unlike the prognathous, bulldog-jawed missioneira (whose lower jaw juts forward in the manner of a gape-and-suck piscivore), minuano has isognathous jaws — upper and lower of roughly equal length — set on a short, stout snout. This jaw structure, together with greenish base coloration, lets a practised eye separate it on sight from its flock-mates. Behind the mouth lies its real specialization: a robust lower pharyngeal jaw bearing a small number of stout, molariform teeth, the durophagous mill of a mollusc-crusher. The flanks are patterned with rows of inclined, vertically oriented bars on the upper half of the body; the species lacks both a prominent humeral (shoulder) blotch and a strong suborbital stripe, and females do not carry a dorsal-fin ocellus. Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle and emerges with size — from roughly 4 in, males develop irregular dark spots and markings on the caudal peduncle and caudal fin, while ripe females become deeper-bodied; like many Lacustria pike cichlids, breeding females typically flush with reddish or purplish pigment on the belly.

Habitat

Crenicichla minuano is endemic to the middle and upper Uruguay River basin, which drains the subtropical highlands of southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina) and forms successive stretches of the Brazil–Argentina and Argentina–Uruguay borders. The Catalog of Fishes gives its range as the middle and upper Uruguay basin across Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay; long thought restricted to the upper river in Brazil, it was documented far downstream in the Uruguayan state of Salto in 2001 (near Constitución, Salto Grande), confirming a broader distribution. This is a subtropical, not tropical, fish: the basin lies near 30–34° S, with hot summers and cold winters in which night air temperatures can fall to near freezing — the cold southwesterly Minuano wind that gives the fish its name. Field observations place minuano among the rocky shorelines and clear, shallow, rapid-strewn reaches that are the classic habitat of the missioneira flock; at one well-studied site on the Cuareim (Quaraí) River, a tributary of the lower Uruguay, the shallow clear water and abundant rock slabs support several flock members alongside it. The river bottom there and at the Salto Grande sites is characteristically littered with smooth, egg-sized cobbles and pebbles rather than the sand or clay of Amazonian rivers — exactly the rock-and-crevice substrate that supports the snails and bivalves minuano eats. In-situ water chemistry recorded with the species at Salto Grande was soft (hardness around 31 ppm) and near-neutral, with pH measured between 6.7 and 7.4 over a couple of days; water in the adjacent stagnant lagoons reached 84–91 °F in high summer, while the running, rocky main-channel habitat the fish prefers runs cooler. Depth at the documented sites was shallow, on the order of a metre or two, though the fish was sometimes taken from deeper, chest-high water during summer heat.

Feeding

Crenicichla minuano is the molluscivore of the Uruguay River pike-cichlid flock — one of only a handful of pike cichlids worldwide to have specialized on hard-shelled prey. Edward Burress's ecomorphological work on the genus assigns it, with Crenicichla tesay, Crenicichla taikyra, Crenicichla cyclostoma, and Crenicichla semifasciata, to the molluscivore ecomorph: fishes characterized by stout heads and snouts, isognathous oral jaws, and robust pharyngeal jaws bearing a few heavy molariform teeth. The diet is dominated by bivalves and snails, supplemented by small fractions of soft-bodied invertebrates such as caddisfly larvae; the molariform pharyngeal mill crushes shells that other pike cichlids cannot process. This is a marked departure from the ancestral pike-cichlid condition of generalist or piscivorous predation, and it underpins the species' role in the flock: by partitioning the snail-and-mussel resource, minuano coexists on the same rocky shore with specialist piscivores (Crenicichla missioneira, Crenicichla celidochilus), crevice-feeders (Crenicichla tendybaguassu), and other ecomorphs without competing head-to-head for food. Aquarists have noted a striking foraging quirk — captive minuano frequently dig into the substrate, picking up mouthfuls and spitting them out nearby to inspect for edible items, an eartheater-like behaviour unusual among pike cichlids and consistent with a fish that hunts benthic, shell-bearing prey rather than chasing fish in open water.

Mating

Specific courtship has not been documented in detail for Crenicichla minuano in the wild, and the species has rarely been spawned in captivity, so much of what can be said is inferred from its biology and from the well-known reproductive pattern of the genus. Pike cichlids are pair-forming, biparental fish that establish and defend territories around a spawning site; the sexes become distinguishable as they mature, and in minuano this happens from around 4 in with the appearance of the male's caudal-peduncle markings and the female's deepening, often reddish-bellied body. Aquarium observers describe minuano as notably milder-mannered than its rowdier, intensely territorial flock-mate Crenicichla missioneira, a temperament that should in principle make pair formation less fraught. Even so, like other pike cichlids the species is territorial, and the brief moments of cross-territory tolerance between sexes that keepers have recorded are the early signals of pairing rather than settled compatibility. In a flock setting on the rocky shore, where several closely related Crenicichla coexist, holding and defending a rock-bound site against both conspecifics and ecologically distinct neighbours is presumably central to its breeding ecology.

Breeding

The breeding of Crenicichla minuano has not been described from the wild, and confirmed aquarium spawnings are scarce, so the account here is necessarily framed by what is firmly established for the genus. All Crenicichla are biparental substrate spawners that deposit adhesive eggs on a sheltered hard surface — typically the roof or wall of a cave, crevice, or overhang, with rocky-shore and rheophilic species favouring spaces among or beneath stones. Both parents share guarding duties: the female tends and fans the egg plaque while the male patrols and defends the wider territory, and after hatching the pair shepherd a tight school of free-swimming fry, which dart back to cover at any disturbance. For a rock-dwelling, snail-eating fish of clear subtropical rapids, the natural nest is almost certainly a rock crevice or sheltered cavity on the same cobble-and-slab shores where the fish feeds. Clutch size is not documented for this species; medium-sized congeners typically lay on the order of a few hundred eggs (commonly ~150–400), and that is the best available estimate for minuano. No specific spawning triggers have been published, but in subtropical pike cichlids of this kind the seasonal warming and rising flows of spring and early summer are the expected cues. The species' relative scarcity in the hobby and its specialized molluscivorous diet — fry of a shell-crushing fish need appropriate invertebrate foods to grow on — likely both contribute to how seldom it has been raised in captivity.

In the aquarium

Crenicichla minuano is a rarely kept fish, of more interest to specialist pike-cichlid and South-American-biotope hobbyists than to the general trade — collectors who have handled it candidly call it commercially a 'dud', a brownish-green, largely colourless fish whose appeal lies in behaviour rather than colour. For those who do keep it, the realistic requirement is a long tank: a single adult reaches 7–10 in and is a powerful, fast-moving swimmer, so a footprint of at least 47–59 in length (roughly 75–120 US gal) is sensible, more if a pair or any conspecifics are involved. Décor should reproduce its rocky-shore home — a substrate of sand mixed with smooth pebbles and cobbles, plenty of stacked rockwork and slabs to create the crevices and territorial boundaries the fish relies on, and some shaded retreats. The species' habit of digging through the substrate eartheater-fashion means fine, smooth grit is kinder than sharp gravel.

Water should reflect its subtropical, soft, clear-water origins: temperature in the 68–79 °F range for routine maintenance (the fish tolerates both the cooler running water of its rocky shores and the warmer summer lagoons, and a seasonal dip is natural, so it does not need to be kept hot year-round), pH from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline (about 6.5–7.5), and soft to moderately soft water. Good filtration and clean, well-oxygenated water suit a fish of flowing rocky reaches; moderate current is welcome.

Feeding is where minuano differs from a typical pike cichlid. It is a molluscivore, not a piscivore, so a diet built around invertebrates — snails (which it will crush), small mussels or cockle, chironomid larvae, krill, gammarus, earthworms, and good-quality sinking carnivore pellets — keeps it in condition, with the bonus that it makes an effective and willing snail-control specialist. It is not a dedicated fish-eater and need not be fed live fish.

The critical compatibility issue is intraspecific and congeneric aggression. Like all pike cichlids minuano is territorial, and while keepers consider it gentler than the truculent Crenicichla missioneira (which has to be separated from its own kind once it reaches about 4 in), it still cannot be crowded with rival pikes in too small a space. It is best kept singly, as a confirmed pair given room to set boundaries, or in a large biotope tank with sturdy, mid-to-large subtropical tankmates (larger characins, other robust cichlids) that occupy different niches. Avoid small fish that read as food and avoid keeping multiple unpaired Crenicichla in close quarters. As a subtropical fish it is comfortable at room temperature and does not belong in a hot tropical community.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla minuano as Least Concern (assessment by R.G. Frederico, assessed 11 November 2020, published 2023). The assessment notes the species is widely distributed across the middle and upper Uruguay River basin in Argentina, Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina), and Uruguay, classifies its habitat broadly as inland wetlands, gives the population trend as unknown, and records no threats currently known to affect the species; it is not listed by CITES. That comparatively reassuring picture should be read against the wider pressures on the Uruguay River system, which — like the broader La Plata basin — has been progressively dammed for hydropower, with reservoirs flooding the clear, rocky, rapid-strewn reaches that the missioneira-flock pike cichlids depend on. Because minuano and its flock-mates are rock-and-rapid specialists endemic to a single river system, the conversion of running, cobble-bottomed habitat into still reservoir water is the kind of change to which they are intrinsically vulnerable, even where no species-specific decline has yet been documented. The fish has negligible commercial value and is not a target of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a concern.
