Taxonomy & naming
Australoheros charrua was described by the Czech ichthyologist Oldřich Říčan and the Swedish cichlid systematist Sven O. Kullander in 2008, in a Zootaxa monograph (Zootaxa 1724: 1–51) revising the Australoheros of the Uruguay and Paraná river drainages. The holotype (MCP 13938, in the fish collection of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre) came from Arroyo Canoín, a small tributary of the Río Uruguay drainage along the road from Pirapó to São Nicolau, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The genus Australoheros had itself been erected only two years earlier, by Říčan & Kullander in 2006, to receive the southern "chanchito" cichlids long lumped into the wastebasket genera Cichlasoma and Heros; Australoheros charrua was one of four species (with Australoheros forquilha, Australoheros minuano and Australoheros guarani) newly named in the 2008 paper. Within the genus the authors recognized several species groups, and they placed Australoheros charrua in the scitulus group alongside its closest relative, Australoheros scitulus. The two are very similar and broadly sympatric; Australoheros charrua is distinguished by a lower dorsal-spine count (typically 16 versus 17), a lower anal-spine count (7 versus 8–9), a higher dorsal soft-ray count (about 10 versus 9), a shorter head and a larger interorbital width, and by lacking the dark blotches on the head and body that usually mark Australoheros scitulus. The genus remains taxonomically active: a 2018 revision by Říčan and colleagues and subsequent molecular work (Říčan et al. 2022) have continued to refine species limits and the phylogeny of these coastal-river cichlids, but Australoheros charrua has stood as a valid species since its description.
Morphology
Australoheros charrua is among the smallest species in its genus. The original description and FishBase give a maximum recorded size of about 3 in standard length (snout to tail base) — a genuinely small cichlid, well under half the size of the familiar chanchito Australoheros facetus. (Figures of "6 in" that circulate on some aggregator sites appear to confuse the species with larger congeners and are not supported by the type material.) The body is the typical chanchito plan: short, deep and strongly laterally compressed, with a steep forehead and a small mouth suited to picking food from the substrate. Meristics from the description run to roughly 16–17 dorsal spines and 9–10 dorsal soft rays, 7–8 anal spines and 7–8 anal soft rays, over 26–28 vertebrae. Coloration is the muted olive-to-brassy ground of the southern chanchitos, broken by a series of dark vertical bars on the flanks and a midlateral blotch, with iridescent flecking on the head and unpaired fins that intensifies in breeding fish. Crucially for telling it from Australoheros scitulus, Australoheros charrua lacks the distinct dark spots scattered on the head and body that characterize its sister species. As in the genus generally, sexual dimorphism is modest: breeding males tend to grow somewhat larger and develop more produced, pointed dorsal- and anal-fin tips, while ripe females are rounder-bodied; the sexes are otherwise hard to separate outside of spawning condition.
Habitat
Australoheros charrua is endemic to the temperate-subtropical drainages of southern South America, specifically the tributaries of the middle Río Uruguay in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and in northern and central Uruguay. The type locality, Arroyo Canoín, is a small clear stream of the Uruguay system; across its range the species occupies the kind of habitat typical of the southern chanchitos — small to medium rivers, arroyos, marginal ponds and backwaters with moderate current, often somewhat turbid, with patchy aquatic and marginal vegetation over sand, mud or rocky bottoms. These are shallow-water fish; while no precise depth band is published for the species, like its stream-dwelling congeners it lives in the upper few metres of the water column, and a 0–7 ft habitat depth is a reasonable representation of where it is collected. No species-specific in-situ water chemistry has been published, but the region's rivers are well characterized: they are mineral-poor to moderately mineralized and run close to neutral, and — most importantly — they are temperate. This is the defining ecological fact about Australoheros charrua: the rivers of Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay experience cold subtropical winters, and chanchitos there routinely tolerate water in the low teens Celsius and brief excursions colder still, far beyond what a tropical Amazonian cichlid would survive. A practical year-round range of roughly 57–79 °F and a near-neutral pH of about 6.5–7.5 reflect this temperate, cool-adapted envelope. (FishBase nominally labels the genus "tropical," but the southern Uruguay/La Plata species are functionally subtropical to warm-temperate.)
Feeding
No dedicated diet study has been published for Australoheros charrua, but its trophic ecology can be read from its morphology, its FishBase-estimated trophic level of about 3.2, and the well-documented habits of the genus. Australoheros are benthic omnivores: small-mouthed, deep-bodied fish that forage over the bottom and among vegetation and leaf litter, taking aquatic insect larvae (chironomids and others), small crustaceans and other invertebrates, supplemented by algae, plant material and detritus picked or sifted from the substrate. As a small species, Australoheros charrua sits as a mid-level invertivore-omnivore in the stream communities it inhabits — both predator on the benthic invertebrate fauna and, as a small cichlid, prey for larger fishes and piscivorous birds. In the aquarium chanchitos of this type take readily to prepared foods, frozen invertebrates and live foods, reflecting the same opportunistic, generalist feeding seen in the wild.
Mating
The pre-spawning behaviour of Australoheros charrua has not been described in detail in the wild, but it follows the well-known and consistent pattern of the genus. Australoheros are monogamous, biparental cichlids that form strong, often durable pair bonds. As the breeding season approaches, a pair selects and clears a spawning site — typically a flat rock, a firm patch of substrate or the wall of a depression — and becomes territorial, with both partners defending the area and the male, as the larger fish, taking the leading role in repelling intruders. Courtship involves the lateral displays, fin-spreading, quivering and substrate-cleaning common to substrate-spawning Neotropical cichlids, and the pair's colours intensify into the barred breeding pattern. Pair bonds in chanchitos are noted for remaining intact between spawnings, which makes them comparatively reliable breeders for a cichlid of their temperament.
Breeding
Australoheros charrua is a biparental, open-substrate (and pit) spawner, the reproductive mode shared across the genus; its breeding has not been documented in the wild and is inferred from genus-typical behaviour rather than a species-specific account. The female deposits adhesive eggs in neat rows on a cleaned hard surface, and both parents tend the clutch — the female fanning and mouthing the eggs while the male patrols and defends the territory. After hatching, the parents shift the wrigglers among pits excavated in the substrate, moving them between nursery depressions as they develop; the fry become free-swimming after a few days and are then guarded and shepherded as a tight school by both adults, a hallmark of chanchito parental care. No clutch count has been published specifically for Australoheros charrua; as a small species it would be expected to lay a modest clutch, on the order of the few-hundred eggs typical of similarly sized congeners (smaller than the many hundreds laid by large chanchitos such as Australoheros facetus). In aquaria the genus is straightforward to spawn, and a seasonal cue — a cool-down followed by warming and water changes, mimicking the temperate spring of its native range — is a natural breeding trigger for this cool-adapted fish.
In the aquarium
Australoheros charrua is an infrequently kept species in the hobby, overshadowed by its larger and more widely available chanchito relatives — chiefly Australoheros facetus and, to a lesser degree, Australoheros tembe and Australoheros scitulus. Those who do keep it find a compact, engaging cichlid well suited to the experienced keeper willing to source a subtropical fish that demands slightly different management than most cichlid species. Given its maximum size of under 3 in SL, a single pair can be housed comfortably in a tank of 25–30 US gal (roughly 4 feet long), which is a realistic minimum for a spawning pair with adequate territory; a somewhat larger footprint helps if dither fish or a second pair are planned. Longer, shallower tanks with generous bottom space suit the species better than deep columns, as it is a benthic fish that spends most of its time in the lower third of the water column.
The most important departure from standard cichlid husbandry is temperature. Australoheros charrua comes from temperate-subtropical river systems that regularly cool to the low teens Celsius in winter and only warm to the mid-twenties in summer. A year-round range of 57–79 °F is appropriate; in practice, many keepers in temperate climates maintain the fish unheated or with minimal supplemental heating in heated rooms, which is quite acceptable. The fish is genuinely cold-tolerant and will be uncomfortable, and may suffer long-term if held continuously at 79–82 °F or above, the kind of temperatures a standard tropical thermostat delivers. Water chemistry is correspondingly undemanding: near-neutral pH (6.5–7.5) and low to moderate hardness suit this fish well, reflecting the mineral-poor streams of Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay. Soft to moderately hard, well-oxygenated water changed regularly is the practical formula; excellent filtration and good gas exchange matter more than achieving a precise pH.
In terms of decor, the tank should replicate the structured habitat of a temperate stream or backwater. A sand or fine-gravel substrate allows natural foraging and the pit-digging that accompanies breeding. Flat stones or slate pieces — both for spawning sites and as territorial reference points — are important; caves or overhangs of bogwood or ceramic provide additional retreats. Some robust planting (Java fern, Vallisneria, Echinodorus species) adds visual complexity and shelter, though a determined breeding pair will uproot lighter plants near their chosen spawning site. Dim to moderate lighting and some leaf litter on the substrate keep the fish settled and encourage natural behaviour.
Tankmate selection requires thought. Australoheros charrua is a cichlid that becomes territorial when breeding, and both adults will defend vigorously against anything they perceive as a threat to eggs or fry. In a mixed community, robust but non-aggressive dither fish of similar size and temperature preference work best — coolwater hillstream loaches, small Geophagus or eartheater relatives, or temperate-zone characids and barbs that share the 59–75 °F comfort zone. Keeping it with unrelated warm-water tropicals is inadvisable, both because of the temperature mismatch and because the breeding pair's aggression can escalate dramatically. Conspecific pairs work in a large tank with clear visual breaks; a lone pair in a species tank is the safest route to a clean breeding attempt. Avoid keeping it with much larger cichlids that will intimidate or prey on it.
Breeding in aquaria follows the typical chanchito substrate-spawner protocol. Providing a natural seasonal cue — a gradual cool-down over several weeks followed by warming, an increase in water-change volume and frequency, and improvement in food variety — reliably triggers spawning condition. The pair cleans a hard surface (underside of a flat stone is the preferred site), and the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs in neat rows; both adults then tend the eggs, the female attending closely and the male patrolling the perimeter. Wrigglers are moved by the parents among pits in the substrate, and free-swimming fry are shepherded as a tight school. Both parents continue guarding attentively for several weeks. The main keeper error is underestimating the pair's aggression during this phase: tankmates that were ignored before spawning may be attacked relentlessly afterward, and cover or partition glass is sometimes necessary to protect them. A second common mistake is running the tank too warm, which stresses the fish chronically and depresses long-term health, reproductive success and lifespan even if it does not cause immediate visible distress.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Australoheros charrua as Data Deficient (DD), assessed on 7 November 2018, meaning there is at present insufficient information on its distribution and population to judge its extinction risk. As a small-bodied fish with a relatively restricted range confined to the tributaries of the middle Río Uruguay in Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay, and one that was only recognized as distinct in 2008, it has simply not accumulated the survey data needed for a firmer category. It carries no CITES listing. The broader pressures on its habitat are the familiar ones for the rivers of the southern Pampas and Atlantic-slope Uruguay: intensive agriculture and the associated runoff and siltation, expansion of soy and rice cultivation, water abstraction and the draining or alteration of wetlands, urban and industrial pollution, and dam and small-hydropower development that fragments stream systems. None of these has been documented as an acute threat to this particular species — that is precisely the data gap the DD listing reflects — but they are the backdrop against which a narrow-range temperate endemic like Australoheros charrua should be watched, and they argue for the basin-level survey work that a future reassessment will require.
