Australoheros mboapari is a chanchito cichlid of the Rio Taquari–Antas drainage in the highlands of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, part of the Rio Jacuí system that feeds the great Laguna dos Patos. Described in 2022 by Carlos Lucena and colleagues, it is one of a cluster of closely similar, narrowly distributed Australoheros that a combined morphological and genetic study sorted out of the long-confused southern-Brazilian fauna. Its name comes from the Guaraní word for 'four,' marking it as the fourth of several new species the revision recognised.

Taxonomy & naming

Australoheros mboapari was described in 2022 by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena, Sven O. Kullander, Michael Norén and Bárbara Calegari, in a wide-ranging revision of the genus published in the open-access journal PLOS ONE (titled 'Conjectures and refutations: species diversity and phylogeny of Australoheros from coastal rivers of southern South America'). That study combined morphometrics, meristics and molecular data across the genus and recognised 17 valid species, describing several new ones — mboapari and its sister Australoheros ricani among them — from the river systems of Rio Grande do Sul. The genus Australoheros holds the southern 'chanchito' cichlids, raised by Říčan and Kullander in 2006 out of the old genus Cichlasoma to contain the lineage around the type species Australoheros facetus; the Cichlid Room Companion files the group in tribe Therapsini of subfamily Cichlinae. The specific epithet mboapari derives from the Guaraní mboapy, 'four' (with the suffix -i), in reference to its being one of a numbered series of new species in the revision. The holotype (MCP 49000), an adult male of 4 in SL, comes from the Rio Taquarí drainage at Quaresma, close to the Rio das Antas, in the municipality of Antônio Prado, Rio Grande do Sul. No junior synonyms are recognised; a formal correction to the 2022 paper was published in 2025 but did not alter the species' validity.

Morphology

Australoheros mboapari is a medium-sized member of the genus: the adult-male holotype measures 4 in (about 4 in) standard length, with paratypes ranging down through 3.5 in females to small juveniles. It has the deep, laterally compressed, blunt-snouted body shape characteristic of the chanchitos, marked by a series of vertical dark bars down the flanks — the number, inclination and relative width of these trunk bars are among the characters Lucena and colleagues used to separate the southern Australoheros species from one another, together with a battery of fine measurements of fin-spine lengths, body proportions and meristic counts. Live coloration in Australoheros of this group runs to olive and brownish flanks over a paler belly, the dark bars and a midlateral blotch standing out and intensifying in breeding or display, often with scattered iridescent spangling on the body and unpaired fins. Because the species was so recently described and is not in the aquarium trade, detailed published notes on its life coloration and on sexual differences are limited to the original description's material.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the upper Rio Taquari–Antas system in the highlands of northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, part of the larger Rio Jacuí drainage that empties into the Laguna dos Patos — the vast coastal lagoon of southern Brazil. Type and paratype localities lie around the municipalities of Antônio Prado and Nova Roma do Sul in the Serra Gaúcha, in tributaries close to the Rio das Antas: the Quaresma locality, the Arroyo do Carma near its mouth in the Rio das Antas, and the Rio Toro on the road between Vila Flores and Antônio Prado. This is a subtropical upland river country of clear, cool, fast-flowing rocky streams draining a basalt plateau, climatically much cooler than the tropical lowland habitats of most cichlids. FishBase carries no measured water-chemistry or depth data for the species, but as a Serra Gaúcha endemic it experiences a strongly seasonal, cool-temperate-to-subtropical regime.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Australoheros mboapari. As a chanchito cichlid it is, by the consistent ecology of the genus, an opportunistic benthic omnivore — taking aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates, detritus, algae and plant material gleaned from the stream bottom and from rocks and submerged wood. Its deep body and short, robust jaws suit a fish that forages over and among structure rather than one built for open-water pursuit. In the absence of gut-content data, this characterisation is an inference from close relatives such as the well-studied Australoheros facetus rather than a direct observation for mboapari.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been described for mboapari specifically, but the genus is behaviourally consistent. Australoheros are monogamous, pair-bonding biparental substrate spawners. A male and female form a lasting pair, select and clean a spawning site — a flat stone or other firm surface — and defend a shared territory around it, courting with lateral displays, fin-spreading and heightened barring. As in the southern congener Australoheros facetus, the pair becomes notably territorial and aggressive toward intruders during breeding, with the female typically adopting a darker, higher-contrast breeding dress. The cool, seasonal climate of its highland range would be expected to tie breeding readiness to the warmer months, as in other subtropical southern cichlids.

Breeding

There is no published account of breeding in Australoheros mboapari, and clutch size, egg number and developmental timing are unrecorded for the species. By the uniform biology of the genus it is an open, biparental substrate spawner: adhesive eggs are laid on a cleaned hard surface and guarded by both parents, the female fanning and tending the clutch while the male patrols the territory perimeter. After hatching the larvae are moved to substrate pits, and once free-swimming the fry are herded and defended as a school by both adults. This extended biparental care is the reliable pattern across captive-bred Australoheros (most familiarly Australoheros facetus, the long-kept 'chanchito'); mboapari is presumed to follow it, but this remains an extrapolation rather than a recorded observation.

In the aquarium

Australoheros mboapari has no presence in the aquarium hobby. Described only in 2022 from a remote highland drainage in Rio Grande do Sul, it has never been a trade fish, has no commercial name, and is known essentially from the museum material of its original description. No species-specific keeping, water-chemistry or breeding information exists for it.

Any husbandry notes can only be borrowed from the genus, with that caveat firmly in mind. Australoheros as a group are among the hardier and more cool-tolerant New World cichlids — an attribute especially relevant here, since mboapari is a subtropical highland fish from cool, clear, fast Serra Gaúcha streams and would want lower temperatures than tropical cichlids, in well-oxygenated water over a rocky and sandy bottom with structure for cover and territory. A medium chanchito of around 4 in, a pair would need a tank with defended space and a sensible footprint, robust filtration, and a varied omnivore diet of small frozen and live invertebrates, quality sinking foods and some plant matter. The realistic summary, though, is that this is a newly described, range-restricted endemic with no aquarium track record — a fish of scientific rather than hobby interest at present.

Conservation

Australoheros mboapari has not been evaluated by the IUCN; it carries no Red List status, reflecting how recently it was described. That absence of assessment is itself the salient point: this is a narrow-range endemic of a single highland drainage, the kind of restricted-distribution southern-Brazilian fish most exposed to localised habitat change. The Serra Gaúcha streams of the Taquari–Antas system face the familiar pressures of the region — agriculture and land-use change, water abstraction and damming, and pollution — and small-range endemics in such basins can be threatened well before any formal assessment catches up with them. The original describers (Lucena et al. 2022) note that the species had not been evaluated by the IUCN at the time of description. No CITES listing applies, and the species is of no fishery or commercial interest.
