Taxonomy & naming
Bujurquina apoparuana was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in his 1986 monograph 'Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru' (page 280), one of thirteen new Bujurquina he erected in that single work. Kullander created the genus Bujurquina to hold an assemblage of biparentally custodial, primitively (delayed) mouthbrooding acaras that had long been lumped into Aequidens; several of the new species — apoparuana among them — had previously been misidentified as Aequidens (now Bujurquina) syspilus. The holotype, an adult male of 3 in standard length, is held at the Field Museum, Chicago (FMNH 84269), and was collected on 27 July 1975 by D.W. Greenfield and G.S. Glodek; the type locality is a stream crossed by the first bridge 2 mi from Pucallpa on the road to Lima, in the Río Ucayali drainage of departamento Ucayali, Peru. Twenty-eight paratypes (0.5–3 in SL) are split between the Field Museum and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM). The Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid and the species as a Peruvian Ucayali-drainage endemic; it sits in subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Cichlasomatini. The genus name is taken from 'bujurqui' (or 'bufurque'), a widely used local Peruvian word for these cichlids. The epithet apoparuana is a toponym: from Apoparu, the ancient name — glossed by Kullander, after Villarejo (1979), as 'Great River' — for the Río Ucayali, in whose basin the fish is found. Modern revisionary and phylogenetic work continues to recognise the species: Říčan & Říčanová (2023) included it in their genus-wide key, and a body-shape study by Říčan and colleagues (2023) placed it among the lowland, lentic-adapted Bujurquina of the upper Ucayali alongside Bujurquina megalospilus and Bujurquina hophrys, a group whose members are notoriously hard to separate on body proportions alone.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 3 in standard length, and the largest type specimen — the holotype — measured exactly 3 in SL, so adults of much over three inches should not be expected. The body is moderately deep (about 60 percent of standard length in adults, a depth reached at roughly 2 in SL), laterally compressed, with thin lips and a straight predorsal profile, typical of a stream-dwelling acara. Fin counts run to roughly thirteen to fifteen dorsal spines with nine or ten soft rays and three anal spines, and the caudal fin is truncate, occasionally drawn out into short streamers that are best developed in the largest males. Coloration in preserved and life material is muted: a whitish belly, yellowish flanks with iridescent gold-green stripes along the sides, greenish iridescent buccal (cheek) stripes, and a brown lateral band that runs from the head back along the flank and angles up toward the dorsal fin, broken into a roundish blackish midlateral spot. The most diagnostic — and most variable — feature is the suborbital stripe: in juveniles it is a dark, downward-curving bar below the eye, but it fades with growth, sometimes vanishing entirely in adults and sometimes condensing into a faint preopercular spot. That instability gave Kullander his main headache in telling apoparuana from its neighbours: it differs from Bujurquina syspilus by a shorter pectoral fin and an immaculate spinous dorsal fin, and from Bujurquina hophrys by a weaker nape band, a wider lateral band, basally clear (rather than uniformly dark) rear dorsal-fin lappets, and the curved rather than straight suborbital stripe. Live fish photographed by Staeck (1983) showed reddish dorsal-fin lappet tips and pale blue spots in the unpaired fins. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for this species, but across Bujurquina it is modest and genus-typical: males grow somewhat larger and carry the longest fin filaments and caudal streamers — consistent with the holotype being a streamer-bearing male — while ripe females are deeper-bodied; the sexes are otherwise similarly patterned (flagged as genus-typical, not species-specific).
Habitat
Bujurquina apoparuana is a narrow-range endemic of the upper Río Ucayali system in eastern Peru. Kullander's material came from streams between Pucallpa and Tournavista and, further south, from the lower reaches of two left-bank Ucayali tributaries, the Shahuaya and the Amaquiria; FishBase summarises the range as Ucayali tributaries between Pucallpa and Shahuaya. (The species is sometimes loosely associated with the nearby Río Aguaytía area, but the type locality and documented records are the Pucallpa-to-Shahuaya stretch of the Ucayali, not the Aguaytía proper.) It is a forest-stream fish that favours clear to tea-coloured (lightly blackwater) water rather than the open, turbid main river. The one detailed in-situ habitat description, from Lüling (1981) for a topotypic sample, records a stream of clear, tea-coloured water draining an aguajal (Mauritia palm swamp) with a pH of 6.3–6.4, very soft water (total hardness about 1.7 °dGH, conductivity around 22 µS/cm), and a temperature of 77–81 °F — soft, acidic, warm headwater conditions. These are shallow streams; no formal depth band has been published, so the depth given here (about 0–3 ft) is a defensible habitat-typical estimate for the species' small forest-stream environment rather than a measured figure, and should be read as such. Kullander noted that Bujurquina are poor dispersers and forest-stream specialists, which helps explain why so many tightly endemic species partition the western Amazon; apoparuana is the southernmost of the Ucayali species not belonging to the Bujurquina tambopatae complex.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study exists for Bujurquina apoparuana, so its trophic role is inferred from its anatomy, its genus, and the wider acara guild. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.4, placing it as a small invertivore-leaning omnivore. The jaws carry conical, slightly recurved teeth in several rows and the lower pharyngeal plate bears recurved teeth anteriorly grading to compressed, bicuspid teeth at the margins — a generalist's dentition suited to picking small invertebrates, crustaceans, insect larvae and assorted organic matter from the leaf litter and soft sediment of slow forest streams, rather than to crushing hard-shelled prey or rasping algae. In the community it functions as a small benthic-leaning forager of the stream bed and bank, the ecological niche occupied by acaras throughout lowland Amazonia. As with most Bujurquina, captive fish are unfussy and take prepared, frozen and live foods readily, which is consistent with an opportunistic wild diet.
Mating
Bujurquina apoparuana forms monogamous pairs that practise biparental care, the social pattern that defines the genus. Detailed courtship has not been documented for this particular species, but the genus is well observed in aquaria and in Bujurquina apoparuana's close relatives the picture is consistent: a pair forms and jointly defends a modest territory, and the fish are comparatively mild — Bujurquina are generally peaceful, undemonstrative cichlids that do not bully tankmates outside of the immediate defence of eggs and young. Compared with the more famously combative Neotropical cichlids, aggression is low-key and centred on the brood rather than on holding large display territories. Because the eventual nest is a movable object the pair can relocate, much of the pre-spawning behaviour revolves around the two fish cleaning and testing a leaf, flat stone or piece of submerged wood together before the female deposits eggs on it.
Breeding
The defining trait of Bujurquina — and the most interesting thing about this otherwise plain fish — is its mode of reproduction: it is a biparental delayed (or 'primitive') mouthbrooder. Rather than committing immediately to either substrate-spawning or mouthbrooding, the pair does both in sequence. The female lays her eggs on a movable surface — in the wild typically a leaf, in aquaria a leaf, flat stone or slate that the fish can carry — and both parents guard and fan the clutch in place for the first day or two. They then take the eggs or newly hatched, yolk-sac larvae (wrigglers) into the mouth and brood them buccally until the young are free-swimming, after which the parents continue to offer the fry shelter in the mouth when threatened for some weeks. Kullander interpreted this leaf-carrying-plus-mouthbrooding as an adaptation to the rapidly changing water levels of Amazonian stream banks, letting the fish move a vulnerable brood out of harm's way when a quebrada rises or falls. Direct spawning records specifically for Bujurquina apoparuana are essentially absent from the literature — the genus as a whole is poorly represented in the hobby and rarely bred — so the account here is drawn from the consistent, independently reported behaviour of congeners (Bujurquina vittata, Bujurquina syspilus, Bujurquina zamorensis, Bujurquina oenolaemus and others), where keepers describe spawns of on the order of 100–400 eggs, eggs laid on a movable leaf or stone, both parents lifting and mouthbrooding the developing young, and release of free-swimming fry that retreat to the parents' mouths for protection. Clutch size for apoparuana itself is undocumented; the ~100–400-egg figure is a clearly labelled genus-typical range, expected to fall toward the low end given this species' small adult size. FishBase explicitly records for Bujurquina apoparuana that 'larvae are carried in the mouth by both parents,' confirming the delayed-mouthbrooding mode for the species directly.
In the aquarium
Bujurquina apoparuana is essentially unknown in the hobby — it has appeared in the literature since 1986 but rarely if ever circulates in the trade under its own name, and published keeper accounts specific to this species are absent. Any husbandry notes must therefore be drawn honestly from the genus and from the broader acara guild, stated as such. Where species-specific data do exist — chiefly water chemistry from Lüling's (1981) field collection and the size data from the type series — those anchor the care parameters; the rest generalises from congeners.
For a fish topping out at roughly 3 in standard length — call it perhaps 3.5–4 in total length for a large male — a dedicated pair can be housed in a tank of around 20–25 US gal, with 30 US gal or more giving comfortable room if other fish are present. The substrate should be fine sand or a soft, rounded gravel; Bujurquina pick and sift the surface layer when foraging and will abrade their mouths on coarse gravel. Cover is important: clumps of broadleaf plants (Echinodorus, Cryptocoryne), driftwood pieces, and a generous scatter of dried leaves on the substrate all replicate the litter-strewn stream floor of an Ucayali headwater and give the fish the visual breaks they need to feel secure. Floating plants help subdue surface light, which these shade-adapted stream cichlids appreciate. Filtration should provide a gentle, well-oxygenated flow rather than a strong current; the species' natural habitat is a quiet forest quebrada, not a fast-flowing river.
Water chemistry must track the field data closely. Lüling's type-locality measurements — pH 6.3–6.4, total hardness roughly 1.7 °dGH, conductivity around 22 µS/cm, temperature 77–81 °F — describe classic western-Amazonian soft blackwater, and the aquarium should match it as closely as practical. Reverse-osmosis water blended back with a small amount of tap water, or tap water treated with peat or a commercial blackwater extract, can achieve these values in most municipalities. Hard, alkaline tap water used straight is likely to suppress activity and may inhibit breeding; long exposure to elevated hardness is linked to declining condition in soft-water Neotropical cichlids generally. Temperature is straightforward: 77–81 °F is a comfortable tropical range. Regular partial water changes — perhaps 20–25 percent weekly — are more important than any chemical additive for long-term health.
As a tankmate, Bujurquina apoparuana is mild by cichlid standards outside of active breeding. A conspecific pair will defend a tight territory around their leaf or stone during spawning, but the aggression is directed and brief rather than the sustained harassment characteristic of larger substrate-spawning cichlids. Suitable companions are similarly sized, non-combative species from comparable soft-water conditions — small tetras, pencilfish, Corydoras catfish, or other gentle western-Amazon cichlids such as Apistogramma species that occupy different habitat layers. Large, aggressive cichlids and fast, nippy fish should be avoided; the former will stress or injure a breeding pair, and the latter will pick at the adults' fins. The species is not a threat to adult small fish but will, like any cichlid parent, energetically defend its brood space.
For breeding, the key provision is a movable substrate: a large dried leaf (catappa/Indian almond leaf is ideal), a flat smooth stone, or a small piece of slate that the fish can physically lift and carry. Experience with congeners such as Bujurquina vittata and Bujurquina oenolaemus shows that pairs will refuse to spawn — or spawn and abandon eggs — if no movable surface is available, because the leaf-carry behaviour is hard-wired and the fish need to be able to relocate the clutch. Both parents should be present; like all Bujurquina the species is a biparental mouthbrooder and a single fish cannot complete the cycle. Common keeper mistakes with the genus include housing the pair in water that is too hard or too alkaline, failing to provide a suitable spawning surface, and disturbing the tank during the mouthbrooding phase — the brooding parent will spit the young under severe stress and may not re-take them. Bujurquina are generally rated as intermediate-difficulty cichlids: easy to keep in good condition but needing soft water and attentive husbandry to breed reliably.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina apoparuana as Least Concern (assessed 21 April 2014 by Hidalgo, Chocano and Velasquez of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos natural-history museum; published in subsequent updates and current as of the 2025 Red List). It carries no CITES listing and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low. The species has little commercial importance: Bujurquina are seldom targeted by the ornamental trade, and apoparuana in particular is rarely if ever exported under its own name — Loiselle (1990) noted that, while it might turn up in shipments from Iquitos, the species most regularly exported are the more widespread Bujurquina syspilus, Bujurquina moriorum and Bujurquina peregrinabunda. That obscurity is a double-edged sword: it spares the fish from collection pressure, but it also means almost nothing is monitored about its populations. The greater long-term concern is its narrow range. As a soft-water forest-stream specialist confined to the upper Ucayali around Pucallpa — one of the more rapidly developing parts of the Peruvian Amazon, with expanding roads, agriculture, palm-oil and deforestation along exactly the kind of small headwater streams it depends on — apoparuana is more exposed to local habitat degradation, siltation and watershed change than its 'Least Concern' status, set over a decade ago, might suggest. Its dependence on clear, low-conductivity water draining intact forest makes it a reasonable indicator of stream health in the region, and a species whose status would benefit from reassessment in light of land-use change since 2014.
