Bujurquina labiosa is a small, slender acara endemic to the headwater tributaries of the upper Ucayali River in Peru, where it lives in fast, crystal-clear Andean-foothill streams. Its name means "large-lipped," and the swollen, fleshy lips that earned it that epithet, together with a long, pointed snout, set it apart from every one of its many congeners. Like all Bujurquina it is a biparental delayed mouthbrooder: a pair lays its eggs on a leaf or other movable object, then carries the developing young in the mouth — an unusual halfway point between the Neotropics' substrate spawners and the mouthbrooding cichlids of the African lakes.

Taxonomy & naming

Bujurquina labiosa was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1986, in his monograph Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru — the same work in which he erected the genus Bujurquina itself to hold a group of small, biparentally brooding acaras that had until then been lumped into Aequidens. The genus name is not classical: Kullander took it from "bujurqui" (also rendered "bufurque"), a widely used local Peruvian name for these cichlids. The species epithet is Latin, from labium (lip): labiosa means "large-lipped" or "thick-lipped," a direct reference to the fish's hypertrophied, fleshy lips. The type species of the genus is Bujurquina moriorum, also Kullander 1986; labiosa is one of roughly a dozen new Bujurquina Kullander named in that single monograph, and the genus has since grown to eighteen-plus described species with a substantial backlog still awaiting description. The original combination is the one still in use — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists Bujurquina labiosa Kullander 1986 as valid, in the subfamily Cichlinae. The type locality is a tributary of the Río Chinipo, about 6 mi south of Chicosa in the Río Ucayali drainage, Departamento Ucayali, Peru; the holotype (NRM 17589) and a single paratype (NRM 17588) are held in the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. Within the genus, labiosa belongs to the thick-lipped group of Peruvian species: Paul Loiselle's 1990 aquarist key (Buntbarsche Bulletin 140) separates it at the first couplet by its thick lips, and then from the other thick-lipped species (Bujurquina eurhinus, Bujurquina tambotapae) by its dorsal-fin lappets being bordered by paired light and dark submarginal bands.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid: the largest specimen Kullander measured was 2 in in standard length (the snout-to-tail-base measurement), so even with fins a mature fish is only a few inches long. The body is comparatively slender and elongate — a build that field workers later tied to its fast-water habitat. Two features make Bujurquina labiosa among the more recognizable of an otherwise look-alike genus: a notably long, pointed head and snout, and the conspicuously thick, fleshy lips that give it its name. Oldrich Rican, who in 2017 published the first photographs of living specimens, separated it from its only sympatric congener, Bujurquina robusta, by a longer head (about 37% of standard length versus 32–35%), a slenderer body and caudal peduncle, a narrower interorbital, and a shorter pectoral fin. In life the fish is darker and bluer than its lowland relatives: the flanks carry rows of opalescent blue lines (two per scale row, the scale centres dark) that are richer and darker than the silvery-to-gold sheen of Bujurquina robusta, and the head markings and the leading edges of the pelvic fins are likewise a deep blue. The vertical bars are narrow and crisp, and — unlike most of the genus — the suborbital stripe under the eye is all but absent, reduced at most to a faint diffuse blotch. Sexual dimorphism in Bujurquina is modest and not separately documented for this species; as in its congeners, males tend to be the larger sex and to develop longer, frillier extensions on the soft fins and tail, while ripe females thicken in the body — a genus-typical pattern rather than a measured one for labiosa.

Habitat

Bujurquina labiosa is a narrow-range Peruvian endemic of the upper Ucayali basin. The Catalog of Fishes treats it as restricted to the upper Ucayali drainage, and for decades it was known from its type locality alone; the IUCN assessment extends its range to the Bajo Urubamba and the Aguaytía drainage, both upper-Ucayali tributaries, and gives an altitudinal band of roughly 820–1969 ft above sea level. It is, in the precise sense, an upland lotic species — a fish of fast-flowing, clear-water foothill streams rather than the still backwaters most acaras favour. Rican's 2017 fieldwork in the Selva Central drew the distinction sharply: along a single tributary of the Río Tambo, Bujurquina labiosa occupied the upper and middle reaches — crystalline, fast water running over boulders, rubble, coarse gravel and sand, broken into isolated pools during the dry season — while its lowland sister Bujurquina robusta held only the short, turbid, slow-flowing mouth-bay where the stream met the main river. The two were genuinely syntopic only in the narrow transition zone between, so earlier reports of them sharing a habitat were largely a sampling artifact. Direct water-chemistry measurements for Bujurquina labiosa have not been published; as a clear-water foothill-stream fish it can be expected in soft, near-neutral water (pH roughly 6.0–7.5) at temperatures somewhat cooler than the lowland Amazon — on the order of 72–82 °F — and the figures in the fact box are habitat- and genus-typical inferences, flagged as such, not in-situ readings for this species. Because it lives in shallow streams and dry-season pools, its working depth is on the order of 0–7 ft. The IUCN classes its habitat simply as permanent rivers, streams and creeks.

Feeding

No gut-content study has been published for Bujurquina labiosa specifically, but the IUCN assessment characterizes it as an omnivore with a tendency toward frugivory and insectivory — that is, a generalist that takes both fallen fruit and seeds and aquatic and terrestrial insects — feeding by day in clear water. FishBase places its trophic level around 3.3, the value expected of a small omnivore that sits above pure detritivores but well below dedicated piscivores. In a fast, clear foothill stream this means working the bottom and the water column for insect larvae, drifting invertebrates, and plant material washed in from the surrounding forest, the typical diet of a stream-dwelling acara of its size. Its modest body size and low fishing vulnerability reflect a fish that is a minor, generalist consumer in its community rather than a top predator.

Mating

Detailed courtship has not been described for Bujurquina labiosa in particular, so what can be said is drawn from the genus, whose reproductive biology Kullander built into its very definition: Bujurquina are "biparentally custodial" brooders, meaning a male and female form a pair and share the work of guarding eggs and young. In aquaria the closely related, better-documented members of the genus (the fish long traded as "Aequidens mariae" and "Aequidens vittata" before Kullander moved them to Bujurquina) form monogamous pairs that defend a territory together; the female typically tends the clutch while the male patrols its margins. These are not especially aggressive cichlids by Neotropical standards — keepers describe them as moderately territorial only around a spawn — which fits a small fish that in the wild lives at modest densities in clear foothill streams. As with most pair-bonding cichlids, a settled, compatible pair is the precondition for breeding, and the pair bond is reinforced through the shared defence of the brood rather than dissolving after spawning.

Breeding

Bujurquina are delayed, or "primitive," mouthbrooders — one of the most interesting things about the genus and the trait that distinguishes it from the open and cave substrate-spawners that dominate the South American cichlids. The pair spawns onto a movable object rather than a fixed surface: classically a leaf, sometimes a flat stone or even a piece of debris, which the parents can pick up and carry. The eggs are guarded and fanned on this object by both fish; once the larvae hatch (or sometimes the egg-laden leaf itself), they are taken up into the mouth and brooded, then released as free-swimming fry that the pair continues to shepherd, taking them back into the mouth when threatened. FishBase records exactly this for the congener Bujurquina syspilus — "eggs are deposited on leaves and guarded by both parents; larvae are taken into the mouth" — and an experienced keeper, recalling Bujurquina kept before the genus was formalized, describes a pair laying eggs on a small movable rock, moving it about, then mouthbrooding the wrigglers until they were free-swimming (community account, FishLore). This precise behaviour has not been documented for Bujurquina labiosa itself, and clutch counts for the species are unpublished; congeneric Bujurquina lay small clutches on the order of one to a few hundred eggs, in keeping with their small body size. The IUCN notes that reproduction in this species is aseasonal and that it shows parental care, consistent with the genus's biparental delayed-mouthbrooding pattern. The clutch-size figure in the fact box is therefore given as a genus-typical estimate and flagged as such.

In the aquarium

Bujurquina labiosa is rarely encountered in the hobby and has never been widely available in the trade; most keepers who have worked with Bujurquina have done so with the commoner lowland species (such as the fish historically sold as "Aequidens mariae" or "Aequidens vittata"), and husbandry advice for labiosa specifically is extremely thin. What follows draws on the published biology of the species and, where that is silent, on generalizations from the genus — flagged as such. Any keeper lucky enough to obtain labiosa should treat these as starting points and document their own observations carefully, as the fish are unusual enough that firsthand records have real value.

Tank size and furnishings should reflect the species' natural habitat: a clean, well-oxygenated foothill stream. A single pair is workable in a tank of around 20–25 US gal (roughly 90 × 15.5 in footprint), though a longer tank is always preferable for a territorial pair. The substrate should be fine sand or a sand-and-fine-gravel mix, kept shallow. Dried botanical leaves — Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) or similar — serve double duty: they lower pH slightly, leach tannins, and, critically, they provide the movable spawning surfaces that Bujurquina are hard-wired to use. Several flat leaves of varying sizes will let the pair select one to their liking. Driftwood branches and smooth stones add structure and sight-breaks; live plants (Java fern, Microsorum pteropus, Anubias on wood) are fine and will not be eaten. The tank must be well filtered with moderate to brisk flow to replicate the clear, oxygenated streams the fish comes from. Avoid the still, heavily planted soft-water tanks suited to lowland acaras — labiosa appears to come from faster, cooler, better-oxygenated water.

Water chemistry should target the soft, near-neutral conditions inferred for its Andean-foothill streams: pH 6.5–7.2, hardness well under 10 °dGH, and temperature 72–79 °F. Bujurquina labiosa sits at the cooler end of the Amazonian cichlid spectrum; sustained temperatures above 81–82 °F are likely to cause stress over time. The fish is a clear-water species and is intolerant of high nitrates; a clean, well-maintained tank with regular water changes is non-negotiable. Soft or reverse-osmosis water blended to the target hardness is ideal; straight hard tap water is likely to suppress spawning and may impair long-term health.

As tankmates, peaceful small fish that share the same water-parameter requirements are appropriate — small tetras, pencilfish, or small corydoras that would naturally overlap with Andean-foothill or clear-water western-Amazon habitats are reasonable choices. Other cichlids are generally inadvisable in a small tank with a breeding pair of any Bujurquina: the pair will defend their leaf and brood vigorously, and the confined space will create chronic harassment of any competitor. Conspecifics in a small aquarium are equally problematic; a lone pair is the standard approach. Because the fish is small (maximum about 2 in standard length) it can be bullied by anything significantly larger, so large or boisterous tankmates should be avoided even outside breeding.

Difficulty is moderate: the fish is not especially demanding in terms of diet (it accepts live, frozen, and good-quality dry foods) or disease susceptibility, but it is sensitive to water quality, it requires soft water that many municipal supplies cannot provide without treatment, and it is simply hard to obtain. The primary keeper mistake with this genus generally is failing to provide a movable spawning surface — a pair of Bujurquina without a suitable leaf will be chronically restless and may not breed at all. When the pair does spawn, they will deposit eggs on the chosen leaf, guard it together, and at wriggler stage take the brood into the mouth for brooding (genus-typical biparental delayed mouthbrooding, as documented for congeners and noted in the IUCN assessment for this species). The pair should be disturbed as little as possible during this phase; excessive water changes or netting near the brooding adult are the most common triggers for a pair to swallow rather than complete a brood. Fry, once free-swimming, are small and should be fed infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods before graduating to baby brine shrimp nauplii.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina labiosa as Least Concern (assessed 21 April 2014 by L. Chocano and M. Hidalgo del Aguila, published 2016), on the grounds that, although the species is uncommon, it has a relatively wide range across the upper Ucayali tributaries and faces no major threat; the population is judged stable. The assessment carries a "needs updating" annotation, and the species is not listed by CITES. The only specific pressure it flags is local: the Urubamba subpopulation could be affected by leakage from the gas pipeline that runs through that region, and the fish is occasionally taken as food by local communities, but neither is treated as a population-level danger. Its real vulnerability is structural rather than acute. As a narrow-range endemic of clear, fast foothill streams at 820–1969 ft, it is far more exposed than a widespread lowland generalist to anything that degrades those specific headwaters — deforestation and the sedimentation and warming that follow it, road building, mining, and hydrocarbon development in the Andean piedmont of the upper Ucayali. Rican's documentation that the species is confined to the upland, clear-water reaches of its streams, and absent from the turbid lowland stretches just downstream, points to how little tolerance it may have for losing that water quality. None of this is a documented decline today, but for a fish known from so few localities, the health of the Selva Central's foothill streams is the backdrop against which its Least Concern status should be read.
