Taxonomy & naming
Bujurquina moriorum was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in his 1986 monograph Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru (page 304, figures 134–135, plate 33). In that same work Kullander erected the genus Bujurquina to hold a cluster of biparentally custodial, primitively (delayed) mouthbrooding acaras that had previously been lumped under Aequidens, and he fixed Bujurquina moriorum as the genus's type species — the name-bearing reference point for everything else in the genus. He described roughly a dozen new Bujurquina at a stroke, several of which had long been confused with Bujurquina syspilus or with the species then called Aequidens vittata, so the genus and its type species were born together out of a single act of untangling. The type locality is Quebrada Carahuayte, a stream along the road between Jenaro Herrera and Colonia Angamos in the Río Ucayali drainage, Loreto, Peru; the holotype (NRM 17572) and a long series of paratypes are held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm (NRM), with additional paratypes at Geneva (MHNG) and Berlin (ZMB). The genus name Bujurquina is taken from "bujurqui" (also written "bufurque"), a local Peruvian vernacular name for these cichlids. The species epithet moriorum is frequently — and wrongly — read as the Latin morior, "to die"; it is in fact a commemorative genitive plural honoring Luis Mori Pinedo and Palmira Padilla de Mori of the Proyecto de Asentamiento Rural Integral, who assisted collecting ichthyologists in the Jenaro Herrera region. Within the cichlid family the genus belongs to the Neotropical subfamily Cichlinae and the tribe Cichlasomatini (FishBase still files it under the older name Cichlasomatinae). Bujurquina is the most widespread and species-rich genus of that tribe, and recent molecular and morphological work (Musilová et al. 2008; Arbour et al. 2014; Říčan et al. 2022; Říčan & Říčanová 2023) has continued to split off new species and rearrange the western-Amazon members, so the total species count is a moving target rather than a settled figure.
Morphology
This is a modestly sized cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 4 in standard length (a published weight of roughly 41 g goes with that figure), and aquarium and field reports converge on "around 4 in / 4 inches" for a grown adult, so it is a palm-sized fish rather than a showpiece. In overall build it is a typical Bujurquina — a compact, laterally compressed acara with the moderately deep body and rounded snout of its genus. Coloration is restrained: a tan-to-olive ground broken by faint vertical barring and the dark markings that the genus relies on for identification. Kullander's diagnostic characters for Bujurquina moriorum, distilled into Paul Loiselle's annotated key to the Peruvian species, are the absence of a predorsal spot on the nape combined with a caudal-peduncle marking that takes the form of a narrow bar lying entirely above the lower lateral line — features that separate it from look-alikes such as Bujurquina huallagae (which has a faint predorsal nape spot and a mid-basal peduncle spot) and from the broadly sympatric Bujurquina syspilus and Bujurquina perigrinabunda. The lateral band runs back to the caudal peduncle, and the lips are thin rather than fleshy. Documented sexual dimorphism in Bujurquina moriorum is slight and not well published; across the genus the sexes are similar, with males tending to run a little larger and, in some species, to carry slightly extended fin tips, while ripe females are fuller-bodied — the genus-typical pattern that applies here in the absence of a species-specific description.
Habitat
Bujurquina moriorum is a western-Amazon forest-stream fish. The type series and most museum material come from Peru, in and around the lower Ucayali drainage near Jenaro Herrera, with additional records along the lower Napo and the Carahuayte and Mazán systems; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the distribution as the Amazon basin of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, though Ecuadorian and Colombian records are sparse (one Ecuadorian collection is noted in the older aquarium literature). Kullander characterized its waters as forest streams carrying near-colorless, clear to slightly turbid water with a moderate to swift current that rises and falls with the rains — small, shaded, flowing habitats rather than the still blackwater lagoons favored by many other lowland acaras. In-situ water chemistry has not been published for this species specifically; the western-Amazon forest streams it occupies are characteristically warm, soft and on the acidic side of neutral. On that basis the figures here are habitat- and genus-typical rather than measured for Bujurquina moriorum: a temperature band of roughly 72–82 °F, a pH of about 5.5–7.5, and a shallow working depth of perhaps 0 to 2 metres appropriate to small streams. (For comparison, FishBase gives its better-studied relative Bujurquina vittata a pH range of 6.0–8.0 and 75–82 °F; Bujurquina moriorum's forest-stream habitat skews softer and more acidic.) Hardness is left unstated because no reliable in-situ figure exists for the species.
Feeding
By trophic role Bujurquina moriorum is a small generalist carnivore-omnivore of the stream bed and water column, sitting at an estimated trophic level near 3.2. Kullander summarized its diet as insects, insect larvae, small fish and plant material — a catholic menu that, as Matt Clarke noted in Practical Fishkeeping, makes it an easy feeder that will take most prepared and live foods in captivity. There is no evidence that it is a specialist sifter or scraper in the manner of the eartheaters; it forages opportunistically among leaf litter, submerged wood and the stream substrate for whatever invertebrate prey and edible detritus a shaded forest creek provides, supplemented by the occasional small fish. In its community it occupies the unglamorous but ecologically important niche of a mid-sized invertebrate predator in low-order Amazonian streams.
Mating
As in all Bujurquina, reproduction is built on a monogamous pair bond rather than a harem or a lek. Mature fish pair off — hobbyists keeping the genus consistently advise buying a small group of juveniles and letting a pair form naturally rather than forcing two adults together — and the pair then defends a shared territory in which spawning takes place. Courtship and pair formation in Bujurquina moriorum specifically are undocumented, but the genus's pattern is well established from congeners: a settled pair, mutual defense of the spawning site, and a division of labor that, unusually for a New World cichlid, eventually moves the brood into the parents' mouths. Aggression in the genus is moderate by cichlid standards — the closely related banded acara (Bujurquina vittata) has a reputation as fairly placid for its size — so pre-spawning conflict is more about a pair excluding intruders from its patch of streambed than about the relentless territoriality of larger Amazonian cichlids.
Breeding
Bujurquina moriorum is a biparental, delayed (larvophilous) mouthbrooder, and this is the genus's signature trait. FishBase records simply that "both parents guard eggs and larvae," but the fuller picture comes from the behavior documented across the genus: the pair first spawns in the open, substrate-spawner fashion — adhesive eggs laid on a firm surface such as a leaf or flat stone and tended by both fish — and then, around hatching, takes the larvae into the mouth for protection, periodically shuttling them in and out. In George Barlow's terminology this is "cedocavus" mouthbrooding (one parent picks the brood up first, then shares or cedes it to the mate); in the banded acara Bujurquina vittata the male leads, carrying eggs and larvae for roughly the first five days before mouthbrooding duty is shared with the female. The same delayed-mouthbrooding, biparental mode is the firm expectation for Bujurquina moriorum, which has been bred in captivity as an egg-layer with biparental care, though the fine details of clutch size and timing for this particular species have not been formally published. Clutch sizes in the genus are modest — on the order of a few hundred eggs or fewer, in keeping with a small fish whose investment goes into oral protection rather than sheer egg numbers — and the free-swimming fry are guarded by the pair and, in classic larvophile fashion, dart back into a parent's mouth when threatened. Both parents share the care of the brood. (The clutch and care figures here are stated as genus-typical, flagged as such because no species-specific count exists for Bujurquina moriorum.)
In the aquarium
Bujurquina moriorum is rarely imported and, when it does reach the hobby, is likely to be mislabeled or sold under a generic "Bujurquina sp." tag — so finding it at all requires a specialist retailer or a contact in the Peruvian ornamental trade. That scarcity means most husbandry notes are extrapolated from the genus rather than species-specific, and keepers should treat them accordingly. The genus as a whole is manageable and rewarding, however, and Bujurquina moriorum is no more demanding than a typical small acara.
A pair can be housed in a 25–30 US gal aquarium, but a 150-litre or larger tank is worth the investment if breeding is intended, because it gives the pair room to claim a territory without turning the whole tank into a war zone. The substrate should be fine sand — the fish will shift it, and the leaf litter that sits on top of sand in the wild is both décor and functional spawning surface. A generous scatter of dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, or beech all work) anchored with small smooth pebbles is important: a resting leaf is the natural oviposition site for Bujurquina, and pairs in bare tanks are conspicuously less settled. Driftwood branches and a few pieces of rounded root create additional visual breaks and shelter. Plants are welcome but should be potted or robust, since the pair will rearrange everything near the spawn site. Low to moderate flow, dim lighting, and tannin-stained water closer to the wild than to a clinical community tank will encourage the most natural behaviour.
Water chemistry should mirror the soft, slightly acidic forest streams of the western Amazon: temperature 75–81 °F (the lower end of the 72–82 °F species range; avoid sustained temperatures above 82 °F), pH 6.0–7.2, and low to very low hardness. Neutral, moderately soft tap water that has been aged and dechlorinated works in practice, and the genus is not hair-trigger sensitive to brief pH fluctuation, but consistent softness and acidity produce noticeably better color and breeding readiness. RO water cut with a small fraction of mineral-rich tap, or a peat-filtered system, is ideal if tap water is hard.
Bujurquina moriorum is peaceful by cichlid standards outside of spawning. Community tankmates drawn from sympatric western-Amazon species — small tetras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, Corydoras or smaller Loricariids — are generally well tolerated and add to the naturalistic feel of the tank. Large, aggressive cichlids or comparably sized territorial fish are unsuitable. During breeding the pair becomes noticeably more assertive, and tankmates that stray near the spawn site will be chased; a species-only setup is safest for a committed breeding attempt, or the tank should be large enough that persistent chasing cannot back a smaller fish into a corner. Avoid keeping two Bujurquina pairs in the same tank unless the aquarium is very large, because pair-on-pair conflict is prolonged and one pair will usually dominate.
The breeding process follows the genus's characteristic delayed (larvophilous) mouthbrooding sequence: the pair selects a leaf — ideally a large, flat, fairly rigid one lying on the substrate — cleans it carefully, and deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on its surface. Both parents fan and guard the eggs openly. At or shortly after hatching the larvae are picked up by one or both parents and held in the buccal cavity; the young are released periodically to feed and dart back to a parent's mouth at the first sign of danger. This cedocavus shuttling phase continues until the fry are large enough to scatter and forage independently, typically within two to three weeks of hatching. Common keeper mistakes include disturbing the pair in the first 48 hours after spawning (which triggers abandonment), running water that is too hard or too warm during the mouthbrooding phase, and failing to provide a suitable leaf surface — pairs offered only flat rock or bare glass often refuse to spawn or consume the eggs. Condition breeders on varied live and frozen foods (bloodworm, Daphnia, white mosquito larvae) for several weeks before an attempt. Fry can be started on microworms and finely powdered dry food as soon as they are free-swimming.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina moriorum as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 9 October 2014 (assessors P. Arguello, M. Hidalgo and P. Sanchez-Duarte); it carries no CITES listing and is not considered a threat to humans. As a small, fairly widely distributed Amazonian stream fish with no targeted commercial fishery — it is only sporadically exported for the ornamental trade, and rarely seen even by specialist hobbyists — it faces no species-specific pressure that the assessment flags. That said, its Least Concern status should be read against the broader strain on western-Amazonian freshwaters. The headwater and lowland stream systems of the Ucayali and Napo basins, where this fish lives, are exposed to deforestation, road-building (the type locality itself sits on a road cut through forest), agricultural runoff, and the mercury contamination that accompanies Andean and Amazonian gold-mining, all of which degrade exactly the clear, forested, flowing habitats Bujurquina moriorum depends on. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but a narrowly habitat-tied stream species is intrinsically more vulnerable to local land-use change than a widespread lake or main-channel generalist, and the genus as a whole is still being found to contain more localized, undescribed diversity than once assumed — a reminder that "Least Concern" rests partly on how little we know.
