Taxonomy & naming
Bujurquina oenolaemus was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1987, the year after he erected the genus Bujurquina in his 1986 monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon. The genus holds an assemblage of biparentally custodial, delayed-mouthbrooding acaras separated from the old catch-all Aequidens; the genus name derives from 'bujurqui' (also 'bufurque'), a widely used Peruvian and Bolivian vernacular word for these small cichlids. Almost every Bujurquina is an Amazon-drainage fish, which makes oenolaemus geographically remarkable: its type locality is the Río Aguas Calientes at Aguas Calientes, about 16 mi east of Roboré in Departamento Santa Cruz, Bolivia — water that belongs to the Río Paraguay system and thence the Paraná basin, on the far side of the continental divide from the rest of the genus. The Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid; the species sits in subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Cichlasomatini. The epithet is a compound of the Greek oinos, 'wine,' and laimos, 'throat,' referring to the wine-coloured (deep red) branchiostegal membrane on the underside of the head — a courtship-and-display colour that Kullander singled out as diagnostic. The species' isolation in the Chiquitano spring systems, far from its Amazonian congeners, has long made it a point of interest in discussions of how cichlids crossed between the Amazon and Paraná drainages.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 2.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of an already small genus. The body is the laterally compressed, moderately deep acara shape, with thin lips and conical jaw teeth. The single most distinctive feature is the colour the name advertises — a wine-red to deep-crimson branchiostegal membrane across the throat, most intense in displaying males, set against otherwise muted yellowish-grey flanks marked by the genus-typical iridescent striping, a dark midlateral band condensed into a roundish blotch, and a below-eye (suborbital) stripe. As in the rest of the genus the suborbital marking varies with age and condition, so identification rests on the throat colour together with the meristic and proportional characters Kullander gave in the original description rather than on body pattern alone. Sexual dimorphism in oenolaemus is more conspicuous than in most congeners precisely because of that throat colour: the wine-red membrane is best developed in mature, displaying males, while females are plainer-throated; otherwise males grow somewhat larger and carry the longer fin tips, in the genus-typical pattern. The fish's small adult size and bright throat have made it a quietly sought specialty fish among acara enthusiasts.
Habitat
Bujurquina oenolaemus is a micro-endemic of the Aguas Calientes ('hot waters') area near Roboré, in the upper Río Paraguay drainage of Santa Cruz, eastern Bolivia — a region of warm, spring-fed streams on the Chiquitano shield margin. FishBase records the species from the Aguas Calientes River basin of the Paraguay drainage within the broader Paraná basin and notes a striking upper temperature: its waters can run very warm, with a quoted maximum around 106 °F reflecting the geothermal, spring-influenced character of its habitat. This is genuinely unusual for a cichlid and is the defining ecological fact about the species — it lives in and around thermal and warm-spring waters that most fish would not tolerate. Beyond temperature, no detailed in-situ chemistry profile is widely published; the values given here for pH and hardness are habitat-typical estimates for clear Chiquitano spring streams (generally near-neutral to alkaline over shield and carbonate substrates) rather than measured field figures, and should be read as such. No formal depth band has been reported; as a small fish of shallow spring streams a habitat-typical range of about 0–7 ft is a defensible estimate. The extreme localisation of the species to a single warm-spring system is the root of both its scientific interest and its conservation concern.
Feeding
Unusually for the genus, Bujurquina oenolaemus has a documented diet: FishBase records that it 'feeds on snails.' This makes it a molluscivore-leaning forager rather than the generalist invertivore most of its congeners are assumed to be, and it implies a pharyngeal apparatus capable of dealing with hard-shelled prey — the lower pharyngeal teeth in snail-eating cichlids tend toward the more robust, crushing form. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4. In its warm-spring habitat, snails and other small invertebrates of the stream bed are the obvious food base, and the species can be pictured working the substrate and submerged surfaces for them. In captivity, snail-eaters of this kind generally adapt to take a broad range of prepared, frozen and live foods, and a varied invertebrate-rich diet would suit it; its natural snail-feeding habit is the most distinctive thing about its ecology after its restricted range and warm water.
Mating
Bujurquina oenolaemus forms monogamous pairs that practise biparental care, the social pattern that defines the genus, and its courtship is where the wine-red throat earns its keep. Displaying males flash the deep-red branchiostegal membrane, presumably as a signal in pair formation and territorial display, against the duller ground colour of the body. The species is otherwise comparatively mild, as Bujurquina generally are — peaceful, undemonstrative cichlids that confine real aggression to the immediate defence of eggs and young. Because the eventual nest is a movable object the pair can relocate, much of the pre-spawning behaviour revolves around the two fish cleaning and testing a leaf, flat stone or piece of submerged wood together before the female deposits her eggs. Hobby accounts of oenolaemus — one of the few Bujurquina to have circulated, if sparingly, among specialist keepers — describe exactly this pair-bonded, leaf-tending behaviour.
Breeding
Like all Bujurquina, oenolaemus is a biparental delayed (or 'primitive') mouthbrooder, and it is one of the better-documented members of the genus in this respect because it has occasionally been kept and bred by specialists. The female lays her eggs on a movable surface — in the wild typically a leaf, in aquaria a leaf, flat stone or slate the fish can carry — and both parents guard and fan the clutch in place for the first day or two. They then take the eggs or newly hatched yolk-sac larvae into the mouth and brood them buccally until the young are free-swimming, after which the parents continue to offer the fry shelter in the mouth when threatened, sometimes for several weeks. Kullander interpreted this leaf-carrying-plus-mouthbrooding as an adaptation to fluctuating water levels, letting a pair physically relocate a vulnerable brood. Keeper reports for oenolaemus describe broods on the order of a couple of hundred fry raised by an attentive pair — a figure consistent with the genus-typical range of roughly 100–400 eggs and offered here as a guide rather than a precise published count. Both parents participate throughout, taking the free-swimming young back into the mouth at any sign of danger.
In the aquarium
Bujurquina oenolaemus is a rarity in the hobby, but it is one of the few members of its genus that has actually reached specialist aquarists and been bred in captivity — its small size and the male's red throat give it a niche appeal. Husbandry notes can therefore lean partly on direct keeper experience as well as on the genus, though no single parameter set is exhaustively documented.
For a fish topping out around 2.5 in standard length — perhaps 3 in total length for a large male — a dedicated pair is comfortable in a tank of roughly 20–25 US gal, with a little more room helpful if other fish are present. The substrate should be fine sand or soft, rounded gravel, both because Bujurquina pick and sift the surface layer when foraging and because a snail-eater benefits from a substrate that supports the small invertebrates it favours. Cover matters: broadleaf plants, driftwood and a scatter of flat stones replicate the structure of its spring-stream habitat and provide territory markers and spawning surfaces. Filtration should provide gentle, well-oxygenated flow.
Water chemistry is the point where oenolaemus differs from its Amazonian relatives. It comes from warm, spring-fed Chiquitano waters that are generally near-neutral to alkaline rather than soft blackwater, and it tolerates genuinely high temperatures in the wild; in the aquarium a warm setting in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius, with near-neutral, moderately mineralised water, is closer to its natural conditions than the soft acidic regime that suits most western-Amazon acaras. It does not require the warmth of its hottest spring habitats, but it is a warmth-tolerant species and should not be kept cool. Regular partial water changes are, as always, more important than any single additive. Outside of breeding it is a mild, non-combative fish suited to a community of similarly sized peaceful species. For breeding, provide a movable spawning surface — a large dried leaf, a flat smooth stone or a small slate the fish can lift — because the leaf-carry behaviour is hard-wired and pairs denied it may refuse to spawn; both parents must be present to complete the delayed-mouthbrooding cycle. The species is best regarded as an intermediate-difficulty cichlid, straightforward to keep but rewarding the keeper who provides the right warm, structured water and a proper spawning surface.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina oenolaemus as Vulnerable (VU) — the most threatened status in its genus and a direct consequence of its tiny range. The assessment (current as of the recent Red List, with the FishBase-recorded evaluation dated October 2020) reflects the species' confinement to the small Aguas Calientes warm-spring system near Roboré in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. A fish restricted to a single, geographically minute, geothermally distinctive habitat has almost no buffer against local disturbance: any degradation of the spring streams — through changes to the springs themselves, water abstraction, pollution, sedimentation from land clearance, tourism pressure on the popular Aguas Calientes hot-spring sites, or the introduction of non-native fishes — could affect the entire global population at once. FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low, and it has no commercial fishery interest, but it does appear occasionally in the specialist ornamental trade, which for a micro-endemic is itself worth monitoring. The combination of a wine-throated display fish, a snail-eating ecology and a single warm-spring home makes oenolaemus both one of the most distinctive Bujurquina and the one most in need of habitat protection; its Vulnerable listing is a reminder that range size, not abundance at a single site, is what most constrains its future.
