Hybridization watchi

Caquetaia spectabilis, the spangled cichlid or basketmouth, is a robustly built Amazonian predator best known for its extraordinary feeding apparatus: a jaw that telescopes forward into a wide tube to engulf prey in a single explosive suction strike. Ranging across the lowland Amazon and the Branco drainage of Brazil and Guyana, it is the most colourful and most traded member of its small genus of South-American 'basketmouths', an adult male flushing with overlapping blues, yellows, oranges and greens. Despite its size and showy looks it is a comparatively peaceful piscivore toward other species, reserving its temper for its own kind.

Taxonomy & naming

The spangled cichlid was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1875, in his 'Beiträge zur Kenntniss der Chromiden des Amazonenstromes' (Contributions to the knowledge of the cichlids of the Amazon River), as Acara (Petenia) spectabilis. His material came from Gurupá and Óbidos on the lower Amazon in Brazil, and the surviving syntypes are held in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW 24534, 76430). The species spent much of the twentieth century under the broad umbrella genus Cichlasoma, and was for a time placed in Petenia and in Parapetenia; the modern combination follows the work of Sven O. Kullander, who in his 2003 checklist of South and Central American freshwater fishes assigned it to Caquetaia. The genus Caquetaia itself was erected by Henry Weed Fowler in 1945 (type species Caquetaia myersi) and was resurrected from synonymy as part of the long, contentious untangling of the Cichlasoma complex — a nomenclatural saga reviewed for aquarists by Paul V. Loiselle (Buntbarsche Bulletin 105, 1984). Today Caquetaia is a small assemblage of large-jawed Neotropical predators that also includes Caquetaia kraussii and Caquetaia myersi, sitting within the subfamily Cichlinae; the Cichlid Room Companion places it in the tribe Therapsini, and the molecular phylogeny of Říčan et al. (2016) treats it among the heroine cichlids. Its broader relationships within that radiation remain an area of active revision.

Morphology

Caquetaia spectabilis is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid that FishBase records to about 7.5 in standard length; aquarists routinely report larger total lengths, with males reaching roughly 12 in and the somewhat smaller females around 10 in. The defining feature is the mouth. Like its congeners, this fish has hugely protrusible jaws that shoot forward into a wide funnel when it strikes — the basis of the group's 'basketmouth' nickname — letting it engulf prey by gape-and-suck in a fraction of a second. A mature male is a genuinely striking animal, the source of the epithet spectabilis ('showy'): the flanks carry an overlapping wash of iridescent blue and blue-green spangling over a yellow-to-orange ground, brightening on the lower body and unpaired fins, often with darker vertical barring that flares during display. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle. Males grow larger and more intensely coloured, tend to develop longer trailing extensions on the dorsal and anal fins, and show stronger striping; females are plainer and deeper-bodied when ripe. Because these cues are unreliable in young fish, experienced keepers note that venting is the only dependable way to sex the species.

Habitat

The species is a lowland Amazonian fish. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes give its range as the Amazon basin along the main river in Brazil — from the Madeira and Uatumã drainages downstream to Gurupá — together with the Araguari River in Amapá and the Branco River drainage, the latter reaching into southern Guyana. Across this range it is a fish of slow and still waters: it is recorded among aquatic vegetation and is closely associated with the marginal plant growth and submerged structure along river banks, where it lies in wait as an ambush predator. It occupies the soft, warm waters typical of the central Amazon, including blackwater habitats such as those of the Rio Negro system. FishBase lists it as benthopelagic and non-migratory, with a documented temperature preference of about 79–81 °F and water on the neutral-to-slightly-soft side (pH from around 7.0, dH from about 7) — though as an Amazon-basin fish it also occurs in the more acidic, mineral-poor blackwaters of the region. No precise depth range has been published; consistent with its life among bankside vegetation it is a shallow-water, near-surface to mid-water inhabitant rather than a deep-channel fish.

Feeding

Caquetaia spectabilis is a piscivore and ambush predator, and its whole body plan is built around catching other fish. It hangs motionless among plants or near cover and, when a prey item drifts within reach, fires its protrusible jaws forward to engulf it whole in a suction strike — the same gape-and-suck mechanism that gives the genus its 'basketmouth' name. The mouth is capable of taking surprisingly large victims; hobbyists warn that the species can swallow tankmates up to roughly half its own length, a direct caution born of that expandable gape. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a mid-level predator that takes small fish and probably large invertebrates. In the river community it functions as one of the larger sit-and-wait predators of the vegetated margins, alongside other ambush specialists of the same waters. In captivity it is undemanding at the table, readily learning to take prepared foods such as large cichlid pellets and sticks once settled.

Mating

Outside of breeding, Caquetaia spectabilis is relatively tolerant of unrelated species but can be markedly aggressive toward its own kind, and pair formation has to be read against that backdrop. Fish tend to pair off while still young, but they are slow to mature sexually — keepers report that a pair generally needs to be at least eighteen months old, and sometimes a year or two, before it will spawn. As spawning approaches, a pair selects and holds a territory for several days in advance, and the colours of both fish intensify markedly in the run-up. The combination of strong conspecific aggression and the need for a genuinely compatible, mature pair is the main reason the species has a reputation as a long-term 'project' rather than a fish that spawns readily; an ill-matched pair in cramped quarters is liable to fight rather than breed.

Breeding

Caquetaia spectabilis is a biparental substrate spawner. In the manner documented by FishBase for the species, eggs are deposited on an open surface and guarded by both parents, and after hatching the larvae are moved by the female to a succession of hiding places. Reported clutches are large for a cichlid of this size — hobbyist accounts give roughly 400 to 1,500 eggs depending on the age and size of the pair, and counts toward and beyond the upper end of that range occur in big, well-conditioned fish. Parental quality is mixed by cichlid standards: pairs will defend the spawn and have been observed relocating fry into a single-entrance cave, but they are not the most reliable guardians, and keepers describe parents that seem unsure of what to do once the fry are free-swimming. For this reason artificial incubation of the eggs is a common and successful workaround, yielding far higher fry numbers than leaving a brood with uncertain parents. Soft, even reverse-osmosis water is reported by some breeders to help trigger spawning, though others have bred the fish in ordinary hard tap water. The fry grow quickly and are easy to raise, with the important caveat that they are cannibalistic and must be kept well fed and, ideally, size-graded.

In the aquarium

Caquetaia spectabilis is a well-regarded but space-hungry fish kept by predatory-cichlid enthusiasts rather than beginners. Its size and appetite make it a heavy waste producer, so strong filtration and large, regular water changes — weekly is the standard advice — are non-negotiable for keeping it in good health. A single pair can be housed in a tank of about 4 ft, but most experienced keepers recommend a 6 ft or larger aquarium, both to dilute its waste load and to give fish room to retreat from one another. The species is forgiving on water chemistry: it does well in either hard or soft water provided the extremes are avoided, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s °C (roughly 75–84 °F) and a near-neutral pH suiting it well, while softer, more acidic conditions resemble its native blackwaters and are favoured by some for breeding.

The décor that matters most is cover. Generous hiding places — large flowerpots, lengths of drainpipe, driftwood and rockwork — let the fish establish territories and break up sightlines, which is the single most effective way to manage its temperament. The critical husbandry warning concerns tankmates and that telescoping mouth: because the fish can engulf prey up to about half its own length, anything small enough to fit will eventually be eaten, so companions must be chosen with the adult gape in mind. Toward larger, robust species Caquetaia spectabilis is generally not excessively aggressive, which makes it a workable centrepiece in a big South-American predator community of similarly sized, sturdy cichlids and large characins. The real friction is intraspecific: conspecific aggression runs high, especially around breeding, so keeping more than one is a project that demands space and careful matching. Feeding is straightforward — a varied diet built on quality pellets or cichlid sticks, supplemented with meaty frozen and live foods, keeps the fish in colour and condition; live 'feeder fish' are best avoided for disease and nutritional reasons. It is a long-lived, characterful fish that rewards keepers who can give it room.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Caquetaia spectabilis as Least Concern (assessed 5 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). The assessment notes that, despite little information being available on the species specifically, it is common and occupies a wide range across the Amazon and Branco drainages; the population trend is listed as unknown, and no major species-level threats are identified. It carries no CITES listing. The fish is used locally — taken in minor subsistence fisheries and consumed where it occurs — and is a commercial species in the aquarium trade, but neither is flagged as a population-level concern given its broad distribution. As with all widespread Amazonian fishes, its long-term security is tied to the health of the basin as a whole, where deforestation, damming, mining and changing hydrology are mounting pressures on freshwater habitats; none of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but they form the backdrop to its status.
