Cichla vazzoleri was formally described by Sven O. Kullander and Efrem J. G. Ferreira in their 2006 revision of the genus, "A review of the South American cichlid genus Cichla, with descriptions of nine new species" (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17(4): 289-398) — the monograph that finally imposed order on a genus that aquarists and anglers had long lumped under a handful of names. The species epithet honors Gelso Vazzoler (1929-1987), a Brazilian fisheries biologist and oceanographer who headed the Departamento de Biologia Aquática at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) in Manaus and who collected the holotype in 1982.
The genus Cichla (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) is the earliest-diverging lineage of the Neotropical cichlids, and Cichla vazzoleri sits within the species-rich "temensis group" of large, barred, spotted peacock bass. It is closely allied to — and easily confused with — Cichla jariina, Cichla pinima, Cichla temensis, and Cichla thyrorus, which share the same four horizontal rows of pale flank spots in subadults and large females. In Brazil it is simply tucunaré (the catch-all Portuguese name for the genus); Spanish-speaking anglers say pavón, and in the hobby it is marketed as Vazzoler's or vazzoleri peacock bass. Kullander and Ferreira designate the type locality as the lower Rio Trombetas drainage (Área Shell-Alcoa), Pará, Brazil (holotype INPA 3501); paratypes also come from the Rio Uatumã.
Morphology
This is a robust, fusiform predator. FishBase lists a maximum of about 16 in (16 in) standard length, though that figure reflects measured museum and survey material rather than a true ceiling — anglers routinely report much heavier fish, and rod-and-reel records for the species run into the mid-teens of pounds. The IUCN assessment, drawing on Kullander and Ferreira, gives a mean body length of about 10 in. As in other peacock bass, the build is that of a thick-shouldered open-water hunter.
The diagnostic details are scale-counts and barring. Kullander and Ferreira separate Cichla vazzoleri from its look-alikes by its small scales — roughly 100-110 (exceptionally 95-114) in the E1 row, more than Cichla thyrorus — and by a lateral line that is nearly always discontinuous, unlike the usually continuous line of Cichla temensis. The dorsal fin carries four to five spines. Subadults and large females carry four horizontal rows of light spots along the side; adults develop prominent black, light-margined vertical bars or blotches, and breeding fish show ocellated (eye-spotted) bars, typically with a small blotch near the dorsal-fin base. A dark blotch on the anterodorsal process of the preopercle is nearly always present in adults over about 8 in (8 in). In the aquarium trade the fish is recognized by the fine speckling that develops across the body. Like the genus generally, mature males grow larger and can develop a nuchal hump in breeding condition.
Habitat
Cichla vazzoleri is endemic to Brazil and to a strikingly small range for so conspicuous a fish: the middle Rio Uatumã (Amazonas) and the lower Rio Trombetas (Pará), from Oriximiná downstream to the mouth of the Rio Cuminá. Anglers also report it from neighboring eastern-Amazon clearwater rivers such as the Nhamundá and Jatapu. These are tributaries on the Amazon's left bank, draining the Amazonas Lowlands ecoregion, and the species is a creature of warm, low-conductivity, generally clear-to-blackwater systems rather than the silt-laden whitewater of the main Amazon channel. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish of tropical waters; the IUCN lists it from permanent rivers and inland wetlands.
Much of what is known about the living fish comes from the Uatumã, where the Balbina hydroelectric dam created a vast reservoir in the late 1980s. The species adapted to the impounded lake and the rivers above and below it, where it occupies wetlands, permanent river channels, and the structure-rich margins typical of peacock bass everywhere. Its dependence on soft, acidic, well-oxygenated water — a recurring theme in both the fisheries literature and hobbyist experience — is the single most important fact about its habitat.
Feeding
Cichla vazzoleri is an apex daytime piscivore. FishBase places it near the top of the food web with an estimated trophic level around 4.2, and field workers on the Uatumã describe its diet as essentially fish. As in better-studied congeners such as Cichla monoculus and Cichla temensis, the pattern is almost certainly ontogenetic: juveniles take shrimp and small fishes, and adults shift to an overwhelmingly piscivorous diet, hunting by sight in the bright, structured shallows where smaller fishes shoal.
Its ecological role is that of a top predator regulating prey-fish abundance, which is also why it became a fishery target — peacock bass concentrate predictably along shorelines and around drowned timber. The genus's deep evolutionary position among Neotropical cichlids is reflected in its conservative genetics: a 2020 comparative cytogenetic study (Quadros et al., Comparative Cytogenetics) found Cichla vazzoleri shares the ancestral cichlid karyotype of 2n = 48 acrocentric chromosomes with five other Cichla species. That same study flagged something ecologically telling — apparent natural hybrids between Cichla vazzoleri and other peacock bass in the Uatumã region, a reminder that these closely related species can interbreed where their ranges meet.
Mating
Like all peacock bass, Cichla vazzoleri pairs off to breed, and reproduction is keyed to the seasonal rhythm of Amazonian water levels. A year-long study around the Reserva Biológica do Uatumã (Augusto et al., published through ICMBio) put numbers on it: female Cichla vazzoleri reach first sexual maturity at about 10.5 in standard length, with all individuals larger than about 12 in fully mature, and the species is a multiple (batch) spawner rather than a once-a-year breeder — a strategy that lets it exploit the seasonal flood pulse.
Outside of breeding, peacock bass are roving, loosely social hunters rather than tightly territorial residents; the territoriality switches on hard only once a pair has selected and prepared a nest. Sexes are distinguishable in breeding condition — as across the genus, mature males grow larger and can develop a fleshy nuchal hump, while gravid females thicken with eggs — which is how pairs are recognized in the field and in the tank before spawning begins.
Breeding
Cichla vazzoleri is a substrate spawner with intense biparental care — and that, more than its size, defines its breeding behavior. A pair cleans and defends a spawning site, lays adhesive eggs on a hard surface, and then both parents guard the eggs and escort the resulting school of fry, fiercely repelling intruders from a territory of a foot or two around the brood. A behavior well documented across the genus and reported by keepers is that Cichla parents largely stop feeding during the brood-care period, devoting themselves to defense.
This protective biology has a sharp conservation edge: because a guarding adult stays glued to its fry, a single hooked parent can cost an entire brood. Combined with the batch-spawning strategy documented at the Reserva Biológica do Uatumã — where reproductively active fish were tracked through the year — it makes the species both a reliable producer of young in good conditions and unusually exposed to fishing pressure during the breeding season.
In the aquarium
Vazzoler's peacock bass has trickled into the predatory-fish hobby as wild imports, prized for its speckled pattern. It should be regarded as an advanced, specialist fish, not a community centerpiece. The honest constraints are space and water chemistry. This is a fish that pushes past a foot in captivity and keeps growing; experienced keepers on cichlid-forum.com argue that even an 8-foot tank is too small, pointing toward 10-foot-plus tanks or indoor ponds with width to match. Treat published tank-size minimums skeptically — peacock bass are big, heavily fed, and high-waste.
The chemistry is the part casual buyers miss. Mirroring the soft, acidic blackwater it comes from, this Cichla is reported to do poorly in hard, alkaline water and to be unusually intolerant of dissolved nitrate; keepers describe targeting a pH below 7 (closer to 6 than 7), very soft water, and nitrate kept near undetectable through aggressive water changes. The other surprise is temperament: for all its predatory firepower, Cichla vazzoleri is anecdotally timid around genuinely aggressive cichlids and can be bullied by smaller, scrappier tankmates, so housing it with "tough" fish is a mistake. None of this is exotic biology — it is just a large, sensitive, soft-water Amazonian predator, and it punishes keepers who treat it like a hardy African cichlid.
Conservation
Cichla vazzoleri is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment conducted 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio, and published in 2022), with a population described as stable, frequent and abundant. The assessors found no significant threats to its overall population, even though the species is endemic to a relatively small range. The clearest pressure on it is direct: it is a valued food fish and the headline target of commercial and sport fishing on the Balbina reservoir of the Rio Uatumã.
That said, "Least Concern globally" is not the same as "unstressed locally," and the fishery literature says so plainly. A reproductive-biology study around the Reserva Biológica do Uatumã reported that decades of heavy fishing pressure had depleted the local stock and reduced the average body size of the fish caught — and that abundance and body size were both higher inside the protected reserve than outside it. The species' biology makes it vulnerable to exactly this: it grows large, is easy to target along shorelines and in the reservoir, and its protective biparental care means a hooked guarding adult costs a whole brood.
Placed in the wider Amazon context, Cichla vazzoleri tracks the pattern Neotropical-cichlid specialists describe for the basin's fishes (e.g. the syntheses by Kullander in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, 2003, and Lowe-McConnell's work on tropical fish communities, 1991): most Amazonian cichlids are Least Concern or Not Evaluated and face ornamental-trade and food-fishery collection plus habitat alteration — here above all the Balbina dam that reshaped the Uatumã — rather than outright collapse. The fish itself is in no danger of extinction; its home river is a heavily modified, fished system, and the honest summary is that this is a stable species under real but localized, manageable pressure.
