Cichlasoma paranaense is a small, deep-bodied acara cichlid endemic to the upper Paraná River system of southern Brazil, where it haunts the weedy margins and floodplain lagoons of one of South America's great river basins. Described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven Kullander in 1983, it is a typical member of the strictly South American genus Cichlasoma — biparental open-substrate spawners of modest size — but it has earned a second life in the laboratory: its unusually blunt, physical aggression and readily formed dominance hierarchies have made it a favourite subject for studies of social behaviour in Neotropical fishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Cichlasoma paranaense was described by Sven O. Kullander in 1983 in his landmark monograph A Revision of the South American Cichlid Genus Cichlasoma (Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm), the work that pared the once-sprawling, pan-American "Cichlasoma" down to a tight South American core. The holotype (MZUSP 13927, in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo) and an extensive paratype series in Stockholm (NRM), Chicago (FMNH) and São Paulo came from the upper Río Paraná system at Três Lagoas, on the left bank of the Rio Sucuriú at Fazenda Santa Luzia, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The name has stood unchallenged since: the Catalog of Fishes and successive checklists, from Kullander's own 2003 treatment in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America through Ota and colleagues' 2018 revision of the upper Paraná floodplain fauna, all list it as valid with no synonyms. It sits in the tribe Cichlasomatini (subfamily Cichlasomatinae of older usage, Cichlinae in current classification), among the genuine acaras — the genus to which the type species, Cichlasoma bimaculatum, belongs, and which today contains only a dozen or so medium-sized South American species. There is no established English common name; in its native range it is simply one of several fishes Brazilians lump together as "acará" or "cará," and the IUCN lists the Portuguese vernacular "Acará" rather than any settled trade name.

Morphology

Cichlasoma paranaense is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid of the classic acara mould, the body depth fitting roughly 1.7 to 2.5 times into the standard length and the head a little under a third of it. The mouth is terminal, the dorsal fin carries XIII–XV spines followed by 10–15 soft rays, and the anal fin bears three spines — the three-spined anal fin marking it as a member of the Cichlasoma group rather than the higher-spined eartheaters. Counts run to 22–23 scales in the longitudinal series and a divided lateral line (14–17 pored scales above, 5–8 below). The living fish is an iridescent green over the flanks, crossed by a set of dark-brown vertical bars, with two diagnostic dark marks: a rounded blotch set just below the upper lateral line at mid-body, and a second blotch high on the caudal peduncle. Reported maximum size differs sharply between sources and is worth flagging. FishBase, following Kullander's original material, gives only about 3.5 in standard length, and length at first maturity around 2 in — figures that suit a small fish. Later faunal surveys of the upper Paraná, however, record much larger animals: Graça and Pavanelli (2007) and Ota et al. (2018) cite a maximum of 6.5 in (about 6.5 in) standard length. The truth probably lies in the species reaching a modest adult size in most populations while occasionally growing considerably larger; aquarium keepers generally see fish in the 4–6 in range. Sexual dimorphism is weak and unreliable as an external cue — behavioural researchers working with this species note no evident external difference between the sexes and have had to confirm sex by gonad inspection — so mature males are best told from ripe, deeper-bellied females by subtle differences in size and finnage rather than colour.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the upper Paraná River drainage above the former Sete Quedas / Guaíra falls, and every authoritative source — FishBase, the Catalog of Fishes and the IUCN — restricts it to Brazil. It is one of the characteristic cichlids of the upper Paraná floodplain, the last long undammed stretch of that river before it crosses into Paraguay and Argentina, and it ranges through the basin's tributaries and reservoirs (the Sucuriú, Paranapanema, Corumbá, Ivaí and others) as well as the main-channel floodplain lagoons. This is subtropical-to-tropical, comparatively soft inland water rather than the black- or whitewater of Amazonia. Field studies put it firmly in the shallow littoral: in macrophyte beds of the Rosana Reservoir on the Paranapanema, Casatti and colleagues (2003) collected it at depths to about 4 ft in water of 50–57 µS/cm conductivity, pH ranging from 6.1 to 8.9, and temperatures of roughly 77–82 °F across the seasons. It is strongly associated with stands of aquatic vegetation (Eichhornia, Salvinia, Sagittaria and the like) and the structurally complex, food-rich margins they create, and with the lateral lagoons that fill and drain with the flood pulse. As a hardy, adaptable floodplain generalist it tolerates the wide pH swing and warm, weed-lined shallows typical of these habitats.

Feeding

Cichlasoma paranaense is an omnivore that feeds mainly on small animal prey gleaned from the littoral. Across the upper Paraná diet surveys it turns up as a benthic-to-mid-water invertivore taking aquatic insect larvae (chironomids, mayflies and caddisflies), microcrustaceans, the occasional small fish, and a measure of plant material and detritus along the way — the flexible, opportunistic feeding typical of weed-bed cichlids and consistent with FishBase's estimated trophic level near 3.0. In the vegetated shallows it forages among macrophyte stems and roots rather than sifting open sand in the manner of the eartheaters, picking invertebrates from plant surfaces and the soft sediment trapped between them. The reliance on the macrophyte-supported invertebrate community ties its fortunes to the health of the marginal vegetation, a point the conservation assessors single out. In aquaria it is an unfussy feeder that accepts prepared, frozen and live foods readily.

Mating

Far more is published about this fish's aggression than about its courtship. Cichlasoma paranaense is markedly territorial and forms stable dominance hierarchies, and a series of behavioural studies from Brazilian laboratories (Brandão et al. 2015, 2018; Gauy et al. 2019) have built a detailed ethogram of its agonistic repertoire — chasing, biting, mouth-fighting and lateral fighting (overt, contact aggression) set against lower-intensity lateral, frontal and perpendicular threat displays (restrained aggression). What sets the species apart is that even after a social rank order is settled, overt physical aggression continues to dominate over the ritualised threat displays that most cichlids fall back on to keep the peace — an unusually blunt style of social conflict. Its response to chemical signals is also atypical: where diluting the water (and the chemical cues it carries) inflames aggression in tilapia and angelfish, in Cichlasoma paranaense it does not, and may even calm the group. For the aquarist the practical message is consistent: this is a pugnacious fish that establishes and vigorously defends territory, so pair formation must be allowed to happen in a tank large enough for a mismatched fish to escape. Like its congeners it is presumed to form a monogamous pair bond around a defended spawning site for the duration of a brood.

Breeding

Spawning in Cichlasoma paranaense has not been formally documented in the scientific literature, and no fecundity figure exists for the species; what can be said draws on the well-established and uniform reproductive biology of the genus. Like all Cichlasoma, it is a biparental, open- or substrate-brooding cichlid: a pair cleans a flat hard surface — a rock, a root, a leaf or, in the tank, a slate or pot — and the female lays an adhesive plaque of eggs there, which both parents then guard and fan. Congeners typically produce clutches of a few hundred eggs (roughly 200–500 in similarly sized species), and after the eggs hatch the wrigglers are moved to pits in the substrate and the free-swimming fry are shepherded and defended by both parents for some weeks. Given the species' pronounced aggression, captive spawning hinges on a securely bonded pair and ample space; the marginal floodplain vegetation it favours in the wild doubles as spawning cover, and Brazilian conservation assessors note that destroying that bankside structure can crowd the fish together and intensify the aggressive encounters that govern its breeding.

In the aquarium

Cichlasoma paranaense is a hardy, undemanding fish to keep alive and a comparatively rarely traded one — "subtly beautiful" and "rarely seen" is how hobbyists who have kept it describe it — but its temperament is the whole story. This is a robustly aggressive cichlid that forms dominance hierarchies and presses physical attacks harder than most of its relatives, so it is not a fish for a peaceful community. A single pair or a small group needs a generously sized, well-structured tank: something on the order of 47 in / ~65 US gal or larger for adults, broken up with rockwork, driftwood and dense planting so that subordinate or unpaired fish can break the line of sight and retreat. Pairing is the dangerous moment; grow out a group and let a pair form, and be ready to separate fish that are being relentlessly driven.

Water chemistry is easy by comparison. Reflecting the warm, moderately soft, pH-variable floodplain shallows it comes from, it thrives across a broad band — roughly 72–82 °F and pH from about 6.5 to 7.8 — and laboratory colonies are kept comfortably at around 81 °F and neutral pH. It does not require soft, acidic blackwater, and tolerates ordinary tap-water hardness well. A mature filter, sensible stocking and routine water changes keep it in good health; it is far more sensitive to social crowding than to water quality. Note that work on the species has shown rising temperature ramps up aggression, so running the tank hot is counter-productive in a marginal social setup.

Feeding is straightforward — it takes flake, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and small crustaceans with equal enthusiasm. Tankmates should be robust, similarly sized fishes that are neither delicate nor easily intimidated, and never small enough to be eaten; fine-finned or slow species make poor companions for a fish this nippy. Kept thoughtfully, in space, it is a rewarding and characterful subject — an authentic, little-seen Paraná cichlid rather than a flashy one.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Cichlasoma paranaense as Least Concern, evaluated on 7 November 2018 by the Brazilian Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022, with a population trend reported as stable. The assessment identifies no significant threats to the species' populations. It does, however, raise a subtle, behaviour-linked concern unique to a fish this territorial: because the species depends on structured marginal habitat, destruction of the bankside aquatic vegetation can alter the physical environment — lowering water levels through siltation and evaporation and compressing the available vertical space — which in turn could intensify the aggressive encounters that organise its social life. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans. As a widespread, adaptable native of the upper Paraná it is in no immediate danger, but its basin is among the most heavily dammed in South America, and the long-term health of its floodplain habitats depends on preserving the undammed reaches and vegetated margins on which its whole way of life turns.
