Crenicichla mandelburgeri is a subtropical pike cichlid of the middle Paraná River drainage, described in 2009 from small forest streams in southern Paraguay. Slender, big-mouthed and ambush-built like all of its genus, it is best known not for the hobby — where it is rarely seen — but for science: it is the namesake of the "Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex," a tight cluster of closely related pike cichlids in the borderlands of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil that has become a textbook case of rapid, river-confined adaptive radiation, with the same handful of feeding specialists evolving over and over in parallel.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla mandelburgeri was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 2009, in the journal Zootaxa (No. 2006: 41–50), from material collected in the Paraná drainage of Paraguay. The holotype (MHNG 2691.043, in Geneva) came from Arroyo Tembey above its falls, in the department of Itapúa, Paraguay; the type series was drawn from the Tembey, Pirayuy, Pirapó and Poromoco streams, all small Paraguayan tributaries of the upper/middle Paraná. The species honours Darío Mandelburger, a Paraguayan ichthyologist and co-coordinator of the Proyecto Vertebrados del Paraguay (1992–1999). Crenicichla is the largest and most widely distributed genus of Neotropical cichlids — well over a hundred valid species of "pike cichlids" — and mandelburgeri sits in the lacustris species group, among the southern, subtropical members of the genus. Its lasting importance is as the type and namesake of the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex, a cluster of closely related, largely sympatric pike cichlids of the middle Paraná and its tributaries (the Iguazú, Urugua-í and Misiones streams) that has been the subject of a decade of phylogenetic and evolutionary work by Lubomír Piálek, Oldřich Říčan, Jorge Casciotta, Adriana Almirón and Edward Burress. A major 2023 revision of the pike cichlids by Bárbara Calegari, Sven Kullander and collaborators (Varella et al.) split the old, sprawling Crenicichla into several genera — erecting Wallaciia, Saxatilia, Hemeraia and Lugubria — but the lacustris-group species, including mandelburgeri and the rest of its complex, were retained in Crenicichla in the strict sense, so the name is unaffected by that reshuffle.

Morphology

Crenicichla mandelburgeri has the classic pike-cichlid build: an elongate, cylindrical, slightly compressed body with the dorsal and anal fins set far back, giving the fish a streamlined, lurking outline. Kullander's type series reached 8 in in standard length (the largest a male; FishBase carries this figure), making it a medium-large pike cichlid, though most specimens collected were considerably smaller. The fins are well counted: 20–23 dorsal spines with 10–12 soft rays, 3 anal spines with 8–10 soft rays, and 35–37 vertebrae. Juveniles wear numerous narrow vertical bars along the flank; as the fish matures these are replaced by an irregular dark horizontal band running along the side, two to three scales wide and lying close to the upper lateral line, together with a distinct dark caudal blotch. A short, narrow suborbital stripe — made up of recognizable individual spots rather than a solid band — crosses the cheek below the eye. The diagnostic feature Kullander leaned on is scale count: mandelburgeri has a low number of scales in the E1 lateral row, 44–56, which separates it from look-alikes such as Crenicichla mucuryna (57–63), Crenicichla niederleinii (56–65) and the coastal Crenicichla maculata, Crenicichla punctata, Crenicichla lacustris, Crenicichla tingui and Crenicichla iguapina (56–75). It is further told apart from the sympatric Crenicichla jupiaensis (which never develops a lateral band) by its prognathous lower jaw and serrated preopercular margin, and from Crenicichla haroldoi by its distinct caudal blotch. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern — males grow larger and longer-snouted, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and, as in most Crenicichla, develop reddish or otherwise contrasting flush and white-edged median fins around spawning.

Habitat

Crenicichla mandelburgeri is endemic to the middle Paraná River basin along the Paraguay–Argentina border region, with its core range in the Paraguayan tributaries from which it was described and in the adjacent Misiones streams of Argentina. It is a fish of small, shallow, running water rather than the big river itself. Kullander's collection notes describe two situations: most specimens came from small, shallow brown-water forest streams up to about 10 ft wide, with sand-and-stone bottoms, variable current and transparency, and little or no aquatic vegetation; a few were taken by electrofishing from rapids in a larger stream 16–33 ft wide and up to about 3 ft deep, the water turbid and brownish, flowing over a roughly 10-degree slope of rock. The associated fish fauna is a typical subtropical forest-stream assemblage — the more generalist pike cichlid Crenicichla lepidota alongside it, plus armoured catfishes (Ancistrus, Rineloricaria), the heptapterid catfishes Heptapterus mustelinus and Rhamdia quelen, characins of the genera Astyanax, Bryconamericus and Oligosarcus, and the eartheater Gymnogeophagus cf. caaguazuensis. These are subtropical waters with a real seasonal swing; collections were made in the high-water month of February. FishBase classifies the species as subtropical freshwater, and no in-situ chemistry was published, but waters of this part of the Paraná drainage are generally soft to moderately mineralized and circumneutral, running roughly pH 6.5–7.5 and around 64–82 °F across the year. The documented habitat depth is shallow — on the order of the knee-to-waist streams and the up-to-3 ft rapids that Kullander sampled.

Feeding

Like all pike cichlids, Crenicichla mandelburgeri is an ambush predator — an elongate, large-mouthed carnivore that lies in cover near the bottom and lunges at passing prey. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a diet of aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, small fishes and other invertebrates taken from the stream bed and water column. What makes the mandelburgeri complex remarkable is the diversity of feeding specialists that have evolved from this generalist ancestor. Edward Burress and colleagues have shown that the complex, like the unrelated Crenicichla missioneira flock of the Uruguay River, has repeatedly and independently produced the same set of trophic "ecomorphs": generalist piscivores with long snouts and large mouths; molluscivores with stout jaws and robust, molar-like pharyngeal teeth for crushing snails and bivalves; crevice-feeders that pick insect larvae and crustaceans from among rocks; and periphyton-grazers with decurved snouts that scrape algae and diatoms from rock slabs in shallow water. Crenicichla mandelburgeri itself retains close to the ancestral, generalist-predator condition rather than one of the extreme specialisms, foraging opportunistically along the stony stream bottom. Because complex members are largely sympatric, this trophic partitioning is part of how so many closely related pike cichlids coexist in the same short stretches of river.

Mating

The reproductive behaviour of Crenicichla mandelburgeri has not been documented in detail in the wild or in aquaria, so its courtship is inferred from the well-known pattern across the genus. Pike cichlids are not shoaling fish; outside breeding they are solitary, territorial ambush hunters that hold a patch of cover. Reproduction reorganizes them into pairs: a male and female form a bond and jointly stake out and defend a breeding territory centred on a cave or sheltered crevice. As in other Crenicichla, the female is the more conspicuously coloured sex around spawning, developing a flushed belly and contrasting markings that she presents to the male during courtship, while the larger male patrols the territory's perimeter. Pair formation in pike cichlids can be fraught — males are substantially larger and an unready or mismatched female may be harassed or killed — which, combined with the fish's general rarity in the trade, is part of why captive accounts of this particular species are essentially absent.

Breeding

No published account documents the breeding of Crenicichla mandelburgeri specifically, and FishBase carries no fecundity or reproductive data for it; the picture here is therefore drawn from its close relatives and the genus as a whole, and should be read as genus-typical rather than species-confirmed. Crenicichla are biparental cave or crevice spawners. The female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity — among rocks, under a ledge, or inside a hollow — and tends, cleans and fans them while the male defends the surrounding territory. Clutch size in pike cichlids of this body size is on the order of a few hundred eggs (congeners typically lay roughly 100–500). The eggs hatch in a few days, after which the parents move the wrigglers to pits and guard the free-swimming fry as a tight school, leading them out to forage and herding them back to shelter at any disturbance. Parental care is extended and shared, with the pair guarding the brood until the young disperse. Spawning in subtropical Paraná streams is most plausibly tied to the warm, high-water season.

In the aquarium

Crenicichla mandelburgeri is essentially never seen in the ornamental trade. It is a small-range, scientifically collected fish from Paraguayan and Argentine forest streams, not a commercial export, and there is no established body of hobbyist experience with it specifically. Anyone wishing to keep it would have to extrapolate from the husbandry of other medium-sized, subtropical Crenicichla of the lacustris group — which is well understood — and the following is offered on that basis, not as a tested protocol for this species. A medium-large pike cichlid reaching about 8 in needs a long tank: a single fish or a bonded pair is best housed in something on the order of 47 in / 4 ft or more (roughly 250+ litres), aquascaped with abundant rockwork, driftwood and caves that create defended sightlines and retreats, over a sand or fine-gravel bottom. Being subtropical Paraná-drainage fish, they want cooler, well-oxygenated water than tropical Amazonian cichlids — a yearly range around 64–79 °F with a genuine cool season, soft to moderately hard water, and pH near neutral (about 6.5–7.5). Strong filtration and brisk, clean, current-bearing flow suit a fish from running streams. Diet is straightforward for a piscivore: meaty foods — earthworms, prawn, mussel, and live or frozen invertebrates — weaning onto good sinking pellets, with no reliance on feeder fish. The cautions are the usual pike-cichlid ones: they are predatory and will eat tankmates small enough to swallow, and they are intolerant of conspecifics outside a settled pair, so a roomy tank, careful pairing and the option to separate fish are essential. This is a specialist's fish, not a beginner's, and its scarcity means most aquarists will only ever encounter related species rather than mandelburgeri itself.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla mandelburgeri as Near Threatened (NT), under criteria B1a+2a, assessed on 11 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico and published in 2023. The Near Threatened listing reflects the species' restricted distribution in the middle Paraná drainage — a relatively small range, fragmented among tributary streams, that approaches the thresholds for a threatened category without quite meeting them. It carries no CITES listing. The principal pressures on this part of the Paraná basin are habitat-driven: the region's Atlantic-forest streams have been heavily affected by deforestation, agricultural expansion and the damming of the Paraná and its tributaries for hydropower (the Itaipú and Yacyretá reservoirs transformed long reaches of the river), which fragments stream networks, alters flow and sediment regimes, and isolates the small endemic ranges that characterise the whole mandelburgeri complex. Because the complex's many species are each narrowly distributed and largely confined to single tributaries, the group as a whole is regarded as a conservation priority among Neotropical fishes, and mandelburgeri's status should be read against that backdrop of basin-wide change rather than any single, species-specific threat.
