Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla gillmorlisi was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander and the Brazilian ichthyologist Carlos A. S. Lucena in 2013, in the journal Zootaxa (3641(2): 149–164). The holotype — an adult female of 3 in standard length, catalogued as MNHNP 126 in the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural del Paraguay — was collected on 15 May 1982 from a dry arm of the río Acaray below the reservoir, in the department of Alto Paraná. A long series of paratypes, drawn largely from the río Acaray and Lago Acaray, the arroyo Yguazú and the arroyo Paso Itá, is held across museums in Asunción, Geneva (MHNG) and Stockholm (NRM). The species is monotypic in synonymy: no earlier name applies to it. Crenicichla is the largest and most widely distributed genus of Neotropical cichlids, and gillmorlisi belongs to the so-called Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex of the Middle and upper Paraná drainage — a diverse, largely endemic assemblage of small pikes that has become a textbook case of rapid ecological speciation in the river system. Among them, gillmorlisi is most similar to Crenicichla mandelburgeri itself in body proportions and fin-ray counts; the two are separated chiefly by the spotted adult colour pattern described below. (Note that the often-cited 2006 Kullander & Lucena paper is a separate review of the Atlantic-coastal Crenicichla and does not contain this species; the valid authority is the 2013 Zootaxa description.)
Morphology
This is a small pike cichlid: the largest measured specimen reached about 7 in standard length, and most type material falls well below that. The body is the elongate, cylindrical, pike-like shape characteristic of the genus, described in the original account as comparatively short and deep for a Crenicichla. Meristics from the description run to 19–22 dorsal-fin spines and 11–12 soft rays, three anal spines with 7–9 soft rays, 35–37 vertebrae, and 42–57 scales in the E1 row. The mouth is large with a prognathous (jutting) lower jaw and movable, outwardly hinged outer teeth; the preopercular margin is serrated, the cheek and predorsal scales are cycloid, and there is no humeral blotch. The single diagnostic feature that separates gillmorlisi from every other pike cichlid is its colour pattern: young fish carry a row of paired vertical bars down the flanks, but rather than retaining these into maturity — the usual condition in the genus — the bars progressively fragment until the adult is covered in many small dark spots scattered over the sides. The dorsal fin is semi-hyaline, its spinous part marked with two well-defined rows of small dark spots and the soft part with two to four more rows. Live fish photographed at the Yguazú Reservoir showed an olivaceous sheen over the spotted ground. As is typical of the genus, sexual dimorphism is expected to be modest in adults — females tend to be plumper when ripe and may show more colour in the soft dorsal — but the original description does not formalise sex differences, so the point is best treated as inferred from congeners rather than documented for this species.
Habitat
Crenicichla gillmorlisi is endemic to the río Acaray drainage in eastern Paraguay, a right-bank tributary system of the río Paraná in the departments of Alto Paraná and Caaguazú; all known collecting localities fall within that single drainage. Because the Acaray enters the Paraná above the former Guaíra Falls, the species belongs to the Upper Paraná freshwater ecoregion. It is a fish of small, flowing streams. Type specimens were taken from a brownish, very turbid creek about 13 ft wide and 3–5 ft deep, with moderate current and a bottom of rocks and stones, the fish keeping to overhanging banks; a juvenile came from a slightly deeper stream (more than 5 ft) of dark, turbid, running water over sand, in open country of low trees and grass. FishBase records a depth range of roughly 3–7 ft, consistent with these shallow stream habitats. In these waters it shares the community with another small cichlid endemic to the region, Gymnogeophagus setequedas, as well as the more widespread pike Crenicichla lepidota and a varied cast of characins, loricariid catfishes, knifefish and livebearers. Parts of the lower Acaray have been impounded — Lago Acaray and the nearby Yguazú Reservoir both yielded specimens — so the species persists in reservoir margins as well as free-flowing streams. No detailed in-situ chemistry (pH, hardness, temperature) was published with the description; the water envelope given in the facts panel reflects the warm, soft, near-neutral conditions typical of the upper Paraná tributaries rather than measurements specific to this fish, and is flagged accordingly.
Feeding
No gut-content study of Crenicichla gillmorlisi has been published, so its diet is inferred from its morphology and from the well-documented ecology of the genus. Pike cichlids are carnivorous ambush predators: the elongate body, large prognathous mouth and hinged, grasping outer teeth are the equipment of a fish that lurks among rocks and submerged cover and lunges at passing prey. Across the genus the prey base is dominated by small fishes and aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans and the like — with the balance shifting toward fish as the predator grows. The small adult size of gillmorlisi and its rock-and-stone stream habitat point to a diet of stream invertebrates and small fishes taken from among the cover it favours along overhanging banks. FishBase's modelled trophic level of about 3.3 is consistent with a mid-level predator of this kind. In its community it occupies the small-ambush-predator niche alongside the co-occurring Crenicichla lepidota.
Mating
The courtship and pair-forming behaviour of Crenicichla gillmorlisi has not been observed or described — neither in the wild nor, as far as the published record shows, in aquaria. What can be said is drawn from the genus, which is remarkably consistent in this regard. Pike cichlids form monogamous pairs that defend a territory centred on a spawning cavity, and pair formation typically involves the two fish settling together over a chosen site with mutual displays before spawning. Territoriality intensifies sharply around breeding. In the absence of any species-specific account, the honest statement is that gillmorlisi is presumed to follow the biparental, pair-bonding pattern universal to Crenicichla, but the details remain undocumented.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Crenicichla gillmorlisi, in the wild or in captivity. The genus, however, is uniformly biparental: pike cichlids are substrate and cave spawners that attach their eggs to a sheltered surface — the roof or wall of a rock crevice, a cavity under stones, or a dug-out hollow — which both parents then guard, the female tending and fanning the clutch while the male patrols the surrounding territory. After hatching, the fry are moved to pits and guarded by the pair as a free-swimming school. Clutch sizes in small congeners of this size run to roughly a few hundred eggs; lacking any published figure for gillmorlisi, that genus-typical range is the best available guide and is labelled as such. The rocky, stream-bottom habitat in which the species lives offers exactly the crevices and stable cover that pike cichlids use for nesting, so a cave- or crevice-spawning mode is the reasonable expectation — but it should be read as an inference from the genus, not a recorded observation.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla gillmorlisi is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It was described only in 2013 from a single small drainage in eastern Paraguay, it has no established trade name, and it is not a fish that turns up in the ornamental trade; there is no body of keeping or breeding experience to report. Anyone who did encounter it would be looking after a small (to roughly 6.5 in) pike cichlid of flowing, rocky streams, and the husbandry would follow the well-trodden template for small to medium Crenicichla. That means a long tank rather than a tall one — on the order of 47 in / four feet of length for a single fish or a compatible pair — with a substrate of sand and fine gravel, plenty of rockwork and driftwood arranged to create caves and broken sight-lines, and brisk, well-oxygenated water with gentle current to echo its stream origins. Water should be warm and on the soft, near-neutral side, in keeping with upper Paraná tributaries. Like its relatives it is a predator: tankmates that fit in its mouth will be eaten, and it is best matched with robust, similarly sized fishes that occupy open water rather than its bottom territory, while pairing two pikes demands space and cover to defuse the strong territoriality the genus shows around breeding. A varied carnivore diet — frozen and live invertebrates, and over time chunkier meaty foods — suits it. None of this is specific experience with gillmorlisi; it is the standard, honest extrapolation from a genus that is otherwise well kept.
Conservation
Crenicichla gillmorlisi has not been evaluated for the IUCN Red List — a live search of the Red List returns no assessment, and FishBase likewise records its status as Not Evaluated. It also carries no CITES listing. That absence of a formal assessment is worth weighing against the species' biology: it is a narrow-range endemic known only from a single tributary system, the río Acaray, and narrow-range endemics are inherently more exposed to local pressures than widespread fishes. The Acaray and the surrounding upper Paraná tributaries of eastern Paraguay have been heavily modified — the river is dammed (the Acaray hydroelectric scheme and the vast Itaipú and Yguazú reservoirs lie in this corner of the basin), and the wider region has seen extensive deforestation and agricultural expansion. None of these pressures has been documented as a specific threat to this particular cichlid, and it does persist in reservoir margins as well as streams, but a single-drainage distribution in a developed and impounded landscape is the kind of profile that warrants a proper assessment rather than the current data gap.
