Cichlasoma portalegrense, the port cichlid, is the original "port" — a stocky, iridescent acara from the cool subtropical lagoons and coastal rivers around Porto Alegre in southernmost Brazil. It was one of the first cichlids ever brought into the German aquarium hobby in the 1890s, prized as a hardy, cool-tolerant, peaceable substrate spawner and an exemplary parent. Yet for most of the twentieth century the name was misapplied: post-war "port cichlids" sold in the trade were almost always other drab brown acaras, and the true fish — a mint-green-flecked beauty as an adult — became all but lost to hobbyists until Argentine and Brazilian shipments and Kullander's 1983 revision reintroduced it.

Taxonomy & naming

The port cichlid was described by the German naturalist Reinhold Hensel in 1870 as Acara portalegrensis, in his "Beiträge zur Kenntniss der Wirbeltiere Südbrasiliens," from eleven fishes he collected in stagnant water near the city of Porto Alegre, the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul; the specific name simply enshrines that type locality. Hensel placed the fish in Heckel's genus Acara and noted its close resemblance to Aequidens viridis (now tetramerus), separating the two chiefly by scale counts. Over the following century the species wandered through a series of generic homes: Eigenmann and Eigenmann (1891) treated Acara as a subgenus of Astronotus, Eigenmann and Bray (1894) shifted it to Astronotus (Aequidens), and Eigenmann and Kennedy (1903) raised Aequidens to full genus, fixing the long-familiar combination Aequidens portalegrensis that stood for some eighty years. Sven O. Kullander's 1983 monographic revision of Cichlasoma transferred the species into Cichlasoma in the strict sense — the small South American "acara" group built around the type species Cichlasoma bimaculatum — where it remains today. Crucially, Kullander restricted the name to the Laguna dos Patos drainage near Porto Alegre, designating a lectotype (the largest of the ten specimens he could relocate, 3.5 in SL) and splitting off the very similar three-anal-spine populations from the Paraná-Paraguay system as Cichlasoma dimerus and Cichlasoma pusillum. As Wayne Leibel detailed in his 1984 Buntbarsche Bulletin essay, the three are nearly inseparable on external characters, differing mainly in dentition (Cichlasoma portalegrense carries roughly 11-15 teeth in the outer row of each lower-jaw hemiseries versus 16-24 in Cichlasoma dimerus) and in geography — which is why so much of the older hobby and behavioural literature on "Aequidens portalegrensis," including G.P. Baerends's classic ethological studies, may in fact rest on related species rather than the true port cichlid.

Morphology

Cichlasoma portalegrense is a medium-sized, deep-bodied and laterally compressed acara with a notably blunt head — blunter than its close relative Cichlasoma dimerus. FishBase records a maximum of 5 in total length, and aquarium specimens commonly mature at five to six inches; Hensel's original series reportedly included a 5.5 in fish, though the lectotype Kullander could locate was only 3.5 in SL, so the very largest historical figures should be read with caution. Juveniles are brown and unremarkable, which is precisely why the fish was so often confused in the trade with the equally drab young of Cichlasoma bimaculatum and various Aequidens. The adult, however, transforms: the centre of each dark-edged scale, especially along the belly, glows a gleaming mint- or blue-green, the lips and gill covers take the same iridescence, and the pectoral fins flush bright lemon-yellow. The dorsal, anal and especially the caudal fins are finely reticulated, the spots fusing near the tail base into alternating concentric dark and pale bands. A trio of dark markings is diagnostic and behaviourally variable in expression: a sub-orbital (cheek) blotch beneath the eye, a mid-lateral body blotch, and a blotch on the caudal peduncle, joined by a dark antero-lateral stripe running from the eye back to the mid-lateral spot. The key meristic separating it from Cichlasoma bimaculatum is the anal-fin count — three hard spines rather than four or more. Sexual dimorphism is modest and typical of the group: males grow somewhat larger and develop more extended, pointed dorsal and anal fin tips, while ripe females are deeper- and rounder-bodied; reliable sexing usually waits on breeding condition.

Habitat

As recognised today, Cichlasoma portalegrense is a southern, subtropical fish with a comparatively narrow range: FishBase and the IUCN restrict it to the Laguna dos Patos basin and the adjacent Tramandaí River basin in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, with occurrence also into neighbouring Uruguay. Hensel's types came from "stagnant water" near Porto Alegre, and the species is a fish of quiet, often vegetated lowland habitats — coastal lagoons, ponds, marshes and the slow margins of rivers draining toward the great Patos-Mirim lagoon complex. The wider literature is muddled here: many older Argentine, Paraguayan and central-Brazilian records published as "portalegrensis" (for example from the Paraná-Paraguay and Salí-Dulce systems) are now referred to Cichlasoma dimerus and its relatives following Kullander (1983, 2003) and Kullander and Santos de Lucena (2013), so the species' true distribution is almost certainly more compact than the historical maps suggest. The defining ecological trait is climate: this is a temperate-edge cichlid. FishBase lists a preferred range of 61–75 °F — strikingly cool for a Neotropical cichlid — with pH 6.5-7.0 and water hardness around 3-10 dH, reflecting the soft-to-moderately-mineralised, near-neutral waters of its subtropical home, where winters are genuinely cold by tropical standards. FishBase classes it as benthopelagic, working both the bottom and the lower water column rather than confining itself to either; no precise in-situ depth band is published for the species, but its still-water, marginal habitats are shallow.

Feeding

The port cichlid is a generalist omnivore. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.0, consistent with a diet of small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans and worms — taken from the substrate and leaf litter, supplemented with plant matter, detritus and whatever small prey the lower water column offers. As a benthopelagic acara it forages opportunistically rather than specialising, neither a dedicated sand-sifter like the eartheaters nor a committed predator. In its quiet, vegetated lagoon habitats it fills the role of a mid-sized substrate-and-margin forager. This dietary flexibility is a large part of why the species proved so easy to keep in the early hobby: it accepts almost anything offered and fattens readily on a varied menu.

Mating

Cichlasoma portalegrense is a monogamous, biparental cichlid that forms pairs and defends a spawning territory. Outside of breeding it is among the more peaceable medium acaras — a reputation that made it a favourite of the pre-war hobby — but a courting pair becomes territorial and will hold and guard a chosen site. Pair formation follows the familiar cichlasomine pattern of mutual display, lateral presentation, and gradual reduction of aggression between the partners as the bond settles. The closely allied "Aequidens portalegrensis" of mid-century behavioural science (Baerends, Aronson and others) was a classic laboratory model for exactly this pre-spawning sequence — the organisation of fanning, nipping, displacement-digging and other communicative acts that precede egg-laying in substrate-spawning cichlids — though, as noted above, the identity of those laboratory stocks relative to the true port cichlid is not fully certain. What is consistent across the hobby record is that established pairs are reliable and cooperative parents once spawning begins.

Breeding

The port cichlid is a biparental open or substrate spawner — the classic acara mode. The pair cleans a firm surface (a flat stone, a leaf, a root, or in aquaria a slate or the floor of a flowerpot) and the female deposits her eggs in neat rows, which the male fertilises in passes. FishBase records fecundity of up to about 500 eggs, a typical clutch for a fish of this size. Both parents tend the spawn: the female fans and guards the eggs while the male patrols the territory, and after the eggs hatch the pair moves the wrigglers to pits and herds the free-swimming fry, defending them vigorously — the species' long-standing reputation as an "exemplary parent." An unusual reproductive footnote in the FishBase record is that females which have already spawned sometimes develop into functional males, a form of sequential sex change reported for the species. The fish has been bred in captivity since the early twentieth century and is regarded as easy to spawn; its tolerance of cool water means breeding can be triggered without the high temperatures many tropical cichlids demand, and a simple water change with a modest warming is often enough to set a conditioned pair to nest.

In the aquarium

Cichlasoma portalegrense has one of the longest aquarium pedigrees of any cichlid: it reached German tanks in the 1890s and has been kept and bred more or less continuously, under one name or another, since around 1913. It earned that staying power honestly — it is hardy, undemanding, relatively peaceful for a medium cichlid, an easy and devoted breeder, and unusually tolerant of cool water. The great caveat for any keeper is identity: for decades the "port cichlid" sold in shops was almost anything but the real thing (usually Cichlasoma bimaculatum or assorted Aequidens), and even documented German aquarium strains have been shown to be misidentified or hybridised. Anyone wanting the true fish should buy from a knowledgeable cichlid specialist and check the three-anal-spine character and the southern-Brazil provenance.

A pair is comfortable in a tank of around 30 US gal or more (a 35.5–39.5 in footprint), larger if kept with companions. Décor should mimic the quiet vegetated lagoons of its home: a soft sand or fine-gravel bottom, driftwood and rock, broad flat surfaces or a flowerpot as a potential spawning site, and robust or potted plants to break sightlines. Filtration should be efficient but the current gentle, since this is a fish of still and slow waters. Water chemistry is forgiving — soft to moderately hard, pH from the low 6s to slightly above neutral (its wild range is pH 6.5-7.0, dH 3-10) — and the species does not need the very soft, acidic blackwater that many Amazonian cichlids prefer.

The single most important husbandry point is temperature. Unlike most Neotropical cichlids, the port cichlid is a subtropical, cool-tolerant fish that prefers roughly 61–75 °F and positively benefits from a cool winter rest; it should not be kept permanently warm in the high 20s. This makes it an excellent choice for an unheated or lightly heated tank and a natural companion for other cool-water South Americans such as the chanchito (Australoheros/"Heros" facetus), cool-tolerant tetras, and similarly subtropical catfish. Avoid pairing it with delicate warmth-loving tropicals on one hand and with large aggressive cichlids on the other. Within its own kind it is generally civil outside of breeding, but a spawning pair will defend its territory, so provide space and cover for tankmates. Feeding presents no difficulty: a varied diet of quality flake or pellet plus live or frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and chopped earthworm, with occasional vegetable matter, keeps it in good colour and condition. Treated as the temperate fish it is, Cichlasoma portalegrense remains a rewarding, historically resonant, and refreshingly low-maintenance cichlid.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Cichlasoma portalegrense as Least Concern (assessed 10 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023), recording its occurrence in Brazil and Uruguay with an Unknown population trend. The assessment notes no threats currently known to affect the species, while flagging habitat loss as a possible future concern. There is no CITES or CMS listing, and the species is of only minor and potential interest to fisheries and the aquarium trade. As a fish of the heavily populated and agriculturally developed lowlands around Porto Alegre and the Patos-Tramandaí coastal plain, its long-term security depends on the condition of those lagoon and coastal-river wetlands, which face the usual pressures of urbanisation, drainage and water-quality decline; none of these is documented as a present danger to the species, but they form the backdrop against which a comparatively range-restricted subtropical cichlid should be watched.
