Taxonomy & naming
The spotted pike cichlid was described by the German naturalist Reinhold Hensel in 1870, in his account of the vertebrates of southern Brazil published in the Archiv für Naturgeschichte. Hensel based the name on material he collected from the Rio Guaíba (rendered in his text as the 'Guahyba') at Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul — the type locality that anchors the species to the Laguna dos Patos lagoon system. The surviving type series is held in the Berlin museum (ZMB); Lucena & Azevedo (1989) designated the 6 in specimen ZMB 7459 as the lectotype, with several paralectotypes from Porto Alegre and the old Colonia Santa Cruz. In the very same 1870 paper Hensel described a second pike from the Rio Cadea, Crenicichla polysticta — also a 'many-spotted' fish — but the two have since proved to be one species: Lucena & Azevedo (1989) placed polysticta in the synonymy of punctata and, in doing so, acted as first revisers under the Code, giving punctata priority. The name has had a chequered history. Ploeg (1991) sank punctata into the wide-ranging Crenicichla lacustris, but that lumping has not held; Ortega & Vari (1986), Malabarba (1989), Lucena & Azevedo (1989) and every subsequent worker have recognised it as a valid species, a verdict confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Within the genus, punctata belongs to the Crenicichla lacustris species group of large, southern, spot-patterned pikes — Lucena & Kullander (2006) found it most similar to Crenicichla maculata, differing in carrying small dark spots on the side of the head. In the integrative revision of pike-cichlid classification by Varella et al. (2023), this lineage falls in the subgenus Lacustria (type species Crenicichla lacustris); that work re-ranks the pike radiation as the subtribe Crenicichlina but retains punctata under the genus heading Crenicichla, which is how it is treated here.
Morphology
This is a comparatively large pike cichlid with the classic Crenicichla outline: a long, cylindrical, slightly compressed body, a long pointed head, and a prognathous lower jaw armed with rows of small, pointed, slightly recurved teeth — the gape and dentition of a fish built to seize moving prey. Reported maximum size depends on the source and on whether length is measured to the tail base (standard length, SL) or to the fin tip (total length, TL): FishBase lists 9 in SL, but the taxonomic revision by Lucena & Kullander (2006), working from 67 specimens, measured the largest male at 11.5 in and the largest female at 9 in SL, so well-grown wild fish approach 12 in. The body is moderately deep for a pike (depth about 19–26 % of SL) with a rounded snout in dorsal view, strongly ctenoid (comb-edged) flank scales and small embedded scales over the predorsal region and chest. The dorsal fin is long and low, carrying 21–24 spines and 11–13 soft rays, the anal fin 8–10 soft rays. Coloration is the source of the name. Both sexes are grey to olive-brown above and paler below, with the sides, back, dorsal and anal fins covered in numerous small, irregularly scattered dark spots, each smaller than the pupil; the spotting extends onto the nape, gill cover and rear of the cheek. A row of about five larger dark blotches runs along the midflank just below the upper lateral line, continuing as paired blotches onto the caudal peduncle, and there are roughly five broad dark bars descending from the dorsal-fin base. A narrow black suborbital stripe and a dark blotch between eye and preopercle complete the head pattern, and a light-ringed black ocellus sits at the upper base of the rounded caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle. Males grow larger, keep the dense head spotting, and develop vivid spotting on the caudal and posterior anal fins; ripe females become deeper-bodied, often lose much of the body and head spotting as part of a breeding dress, and carry a large dark blotch in the rear of the dorsal fin set off by a clear margin — a marking males lack.
Habitat
Crenicichla punctata is restricted to the Laguna dos Patos and Lagoa Mirim basins of Rio Grande do Sul in southernmost Brazil and adjacent Uruguay — a vast subtropical complex of shallow coastal lagoons and the rivers that feed them, the Guaíba, Jacuí, dos Sinos, Caí and Ibicuí among them, draining toward the Atlantic. This is a temperate-to-subtropical setting well south of the Amazon, with a pronounced seasonal temperature swing; FishBase gives a preferred range of roughly 72–77 °F, and winter water is cooler still, so the species is adapted to conditions that would chill a tropical lowland cichlid. It is a benthopelagic fish of shallow, structured margins rather than open water. Field observers in Uruguay have found it abundant in clear and tea-stained rivers and in narrow, shallow streams, hunting from cover where the bottom is a mix of rock, mud and submerged vegetation; the same habitats hold other southern cichlids such as the eartheaters Gymnogeophagus labiatus and Gymnogeophagus terrapurpura, Australoheros, and smaller congeners like the eyestripe pike (Crenicichla scottii). Museum records span everything from small arroios and irrigation reservoirs (açudes) to the open shallows of Lago Guaíba and the broad Lagoa Mirim. Because it is a shoreline and vegetated-margin predator rather than a deep-lake fish, its documented depth band is shallow — broadly the upper few metres of the littoral — and no great-depth occurrence is on record. Precise in-situ chemistry is little published, but the lagoon system runs soft to moderately mineralised and slightly acidic to near-neutral, conditions reflected in the recommended aquarium parameters below.
Feeding
Like its congeners, the spotted pike cichlid is a carnivore — an ambush and stalking predator that lies among rock and weed and lunges at passing prey, seizing it with the long toothed jaws rather than sifting or grazing. Direct evidence comes from the revision by Lucena & Kullander (2006), who examined stomachs and found mollusc shells (bivalves) in one fish and aquatic insect larvae in another, indicating a diet that combines hard-shelled benthic invertebrates with soft insect prey. A comparative study of southern pike cichlids by Kullander and colleagues (2020), relating diet to pharyngeal-jaw form, characterised the genus as carnivorous on fish and invertebrates — notably the freshwater crab-like Aegla and aquatic insects — with the larger, heavier-jawed species taking proportionally more fish. Crenicichla punctata sits within that pattern: a generalist predator that switches with size and opportunity from insect larvae and crustaceans toward small fishes as it grows, and whose molariform-tending pharyngeal teeth let it crush bivalves and snails as well. In the community it is a mid-level predator of the lagoon and stream littoral, one of the principal fish-eating cichlids of the Patos–Mirim system.
Mating
Crenicichla punctata has not been the subject of a detailed field study of its reproduction, but its behaviour follows the well-documented Crenicichla template and is consistent with what aquarists who have spawned it report. Outside breeding the fish is a solitary, cover-bound ambush predator that tolerates little company of its own kind. Reproduction reorganises this into a pair bond: a male and a ripe female form a temporary monogamous partnership and together establish and defend a territory centred on a spawning site. Pair formation is the dangerous phase — a pike that is not ready or not accepted may be driven off or killed — so courtship involves mutual assessment, lateral displays and a gradual reduction of aggression before the fish commit. As spawning nears, the female assumes her breeding dress: she deepens in body, her busy spotting fades, and the dark dorsal-fin blotch becomes conspicuous, an honest signal of readiness directed at her mate. The pair then cleans a chosen surface in a sheltered crevice or cavity, and both fish drive other fishes well back from the nest.
Breeding
Wild spawning has not been described in detail, but Crenicichla punctata breeds as a biparental substrate- and cave-spawner in the manner of the genus, and it has been bred in captivity — a female guarding her clutch in the aquarium of the German aquarist Frank Warzel is among the documented images of the species. The pair deposits a single layer of adhesive eggs on a firm, sheltered surface, typically the roof or wall of a cave, crevice, hollow or overturned object. Care is divided in the usual pike fashion: the female tends the eggs directly — fanning them with her fins to keep them oxygenated and clean and picking off any that fungus — while the male holds the wider territory against intruders. The eggs hatch in a few days and the larvae are moved to pits in the substrate, where the parents continue to guard them; once free-swimming, the fry are shepherded as a tight school and shelter back among rock and cover at any alarm, both parents staying with the brood for some weeks until the young disperse. A precise clutch figure for this species is not published; large southern pikes of the lacustris group typically lay on the order of several hundred eggs per spawning, a genus-typical estimate that should be read as an approximation rather than a measured count for punctata.
In the aquarium
The spotted pike cichlid is an occasional rather than a staple of the hobby, reaching Europe and elsewhere mainly through enthusiasts who collect in Uruguay and southern Brazil. It is a fish for the dedicated keeper of large predatory cichlids, not a community species. Because it grows to nearly 12 in and is a strong-swimming ambush hunter, it needs a long tank — a single adult or a compatible pair is realistically a 450-litre-plus (120 US gallon) project, measured in length and floor area rather than height, with plenty of caves, rockwork, driftwood and planted or shaded retreats to break sightlines and give a subordinate fish somewhere to escape. The single most important husbandry point is temperature: this is a subtropical fish from a region with a real winter, comfortable around 68–77 °F, and it should not be kept permanently in the high-20s tropical range that suits Amazonian pikes; a seasonal cooling is natural to it. Water is best kept soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral — roughly pH 6.5–7.5 — clean and well filtered, with the brisk oxygenation and generous water changes that any large predator's bioload demands. Filtration should be robust but flow need not be torrential; these are fish of structured margins, not rapids. Feeding is straightforward once settled: a varied carnivore diet of earthworms, prawn, mussel, fish-based foods, and good sinking pellets, avoiding the long-term use of feeder fish, which carry disease and offer poor nutrition. Tankmates must be chosen with the fish's predatory nature in mind — anything small enough to swallow will be eaten, and fin-nippers will be harassed in return. Robust, similarly sized South Americans that occupy other parts of the tank (larger eartheaters, big characins, armoured catfish) are the usual companions, while conspecifics are risky outside a genuine breeding pair and should only be attempted in a very large, heavily structured tank where animals can stay out of each other's way. Sexing is easiest on adults — males larger and more heavily spotted on the head and unpaired fins, females rounder with the tell-tale dark dorsal blotch when in condition. Breeders provide a cave or overturned flowerpot as a spawning site and let a pair form on its own terms, dividing the tank if aggression flares.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla punctata as Least Concern (assessed 11 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). The rating reflects a relatively wide distribution across the Laguna dos Patos and Lagoa Mirim basins of southern Brazil and Uruguay, where the species is locally common — field collectors describe it as abundant in suitable rivers — and faces no species-specific threat; its population trend is listed as unknown. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is not a target of commercial fisheries, though it appears incidentally and occasionally enters the ornamental trade. The broader concern is the health of the Patos–Mirim system itself: these coastal lagoons and their feeder rivers drain one of the more heavily settled and farmed regions of southern Brazil and Uruguay, and are exposed to agricultural runoff, urban and industrial pollution around the Porto Alegre metropolitan area, riparian clearing, water abstraction for rice irrigation, and the spread of introduced species. None of these is documented as a present danger to this adaptable predator, but they form the backdrop against which the long-term status of the lagoon fauna as a whole should be read.
