Taxonomy & naming
Australoheros taura was described in 2009 by the Brazilian ichthyologists Felipe P. Ottoni and Morevy M. Cheffe, in the Munich journal Spixiana (volume 32, part 1, pages 153-159), from small tributaries of the upper rio das Antas in the rio Jacuí drainage. The holotype, an adult of 2.5 in standard length, is registered as UFRJ 7574 in the fish collection of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro; it was taken near the arroio Barreiro at Município de Bom Jesus (28°48'S, 50°30'W) by M. Cheffe and L. Rosa on 6 April 2004, with paratypes spread across the UFRJ, CIMC (Pelotas) and MCP (Porto Alegre) collections. The genus Australoheros had been erected only three years earlier, by Oldřich Říčan and Sven O. Kullander in 2006, to hold the southern 'Cichlasoma' facetum group; taura was the tenth species added to it and the first found in a high, rapids-dominated landscape rather than the lowland still waters its relatives favour. Ottoni and Cheffe diagnosed it on a distinctive mix of characters — the longest snout of any Australoheros, a deep body, a very narrow caudal-fin-base spot of the kind seen in the Australoheros scitulus group, pink-to-red dominant males, and meristic counts (more anal-fin rays, fewer total vertebrae) separating it from neighbouring congeners such as Australoheros ribeirae, Australoheros forquilha, Australoheros minuano and the still-undescribed 'Australoheros sp. jacui' that shares its river basin.
Its taxonomic status is, however, genuinely unsettled, and honesty requires flagging it. FishBase, GBIF and the IUCN Red List all still carry Australoheros taura as a valid species. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, by contrast, now lists it as a junior synonym of the older Australoheros acaroides (Hensel, 1870), following the coastal-rivers revision of the genus by Lucena, Calegari and others (2022) — a treatment also reached in the molecular and morphological reappraisal of the group that Ottoni himself co-authored (2021). In other words, the man who named taura has since concluded it is not distinct. We retain the name taura here because it remains the working binomial under which the fish's biology, range and conservation are catalogued, but a reader should understand that 'taura' may ultimately prove to be the upland population of Australoheros acaroides rather than a species in its own right. The synonym Australoheros acaroides is the name to watch.
Morphology
This is a modest-sized, laterally compressed cichlid of typical chanchito build: a deepish, slab-sided body, a rounded-then-pointed dorsal and anal fin, and a long caudal fin. Reported maximum size is about 5 in standard length — the largest paratype measured 5 in SL — so a large adult is roughly five inches in the body, a little more counting the tail. The single most diagnostic feature is the snout: at 14.4-17.3 percent of standard length it is the longest in the genus, giving the head a drawn-out profile reminiscent of Australoheros tembe. The body bears the seven dark vertical trunk bars characteristic of Australoheros, often forked at top or bottom, overlaid on a ground colour that shifts chameleon-like from light brown through yellowish and grey to near-black with the fish's mood — a colour-changing ability that earned the whole group its old Brazilian name acará-camaleão. There are three dark spots: one on the caudal-fin base (here distinctively very narrow), one where the mid-lateral stripe crosses the fourth trunk bar, and one on the rear edge of the gill cover. Living fish carry green or blue iridescence concentrated along the flanks and bars, a purple sheen on the snout, and a yellow ring around the iris; the belly can flush yellow to purple. Crucially, there are no dark marks on the side of the head, which separates taura from Australoheros scitulus and Australoheros forquilha. Sexual dimorphism is present and is mainly one of colour and size: dominant, breeding males develop a pink-to-red wash over the body (a trait taura shares only with Australoheros minuano among the southern species) and grow larger, while females stay more subdued and, when ripe, noticeably rounder in the belly — the general pattern across substrate-spawning Australoheros, in which males run larger and more intensely coloured than the females they pair with.
Habitat
Australoheros taura is, on present evidence, a narrow endemic of the upper rio das Antas basin in the rio Jacuí drainage of the Laguna dos Patos system, entirely within the State of Rio Grande do Sul in southernmost Brazil — recorded from the type locality near arroio Barreiro and a short list of nearby streams (arroios João Souza, Pinheiro Alto, Moraes and Tainhas, the rio das Antas itself, and the impoundment of a small hydro dam). This is the Araucárias plateau, 2297–3281 ft above sea level, a subtropical highland of araucaria forest where rivers run as rapids rather than the sluggish lowland channels most chanchitos inhabit. The describers found taura in small, shallow, clear-water streams of moderate current, over a bed of rock, loose stones and sand with only sparse macrophytes and grassy, vegetated margins. The setting is unusually harsh for the genus: water can turn cold in midwinter and air temperatures over the plateau routinely fall below freezing, so this is a cool-water cichlid by South American standards rather than a tropical one. In-situ water chemistry was not measured in the original description, and no published field readings of temperature, pH or hardness exist for the species; the values given in this article's data panel are therefore defensible inferences from the documented habitat and from congeners — a clear, rock-and-sand highland stream of this kind is typically cool and close to neutral in pH, and as a shallow-stream fish taura occupies roughly the top metre of the water column. These should be read as estimates flagged as such, not as field measurements. The fish shares its streams with a characteristically southern-Brazilian upland fauna — Astyanax tetras, Bryconamericus, Hyphessobrycon luetkenii, loricariid catfishes such as Rineloricaria and Pareiorhaphis, the pike cichlid Crenicichla cf. maculata and an undescribed Geophagus.
Feeding
No diet study has been published for Australoheros taura specifically, so its feeding ecology must be read from its anatomy and from the well-known habits of its genus. Australoheros are generalist, substrate-oriented omnivores — the chanchito's old reputation is precisely as a fish that spends its day 'rooting about in the substrate', sifting sand and detritus and uprooting plants in the search for food. The robust lower pharyngeal jaw of taura, sutured and bearing stout teeth (unicuspid and laterally compressed bicuspid forms described from the type series), is the equipment of an opportunist that takes small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and worms — along with algae, plant material and organic detritus worked from the stream bed. In a cool, rocky highland stream the practical menu is aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates grazed and grubbed from rock and sand, supplemented by whatever vegetable matter and detritus the current delivers. In its community it functions as a mid-sized benthic forager rather than a specialist of any single food, the trophic role that has made the wider chanchito group such adaptable survivors.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Australoheros taura has not been documented in the wild or, as far as the published record shows, in aquaria, so what follows is the consistent pattern of the genus rather than observation of this species. Australoheros are biparental substrate spawners that form monogamous pairs and become markedly territorial and pugnacious around breeding — the very trait that gave the chanchito its name (Spanish 'piglet', for fighting like a young pig and uprooting plants) and gave taura its own (a gaucho word for 'brave'). A pair forms within a loose social group, the dominant male intensifying in colour — in taura that means the diagnostic pink-to-red flush — and the two fish jointly clear and defend a territory around a chosen spawning surface. Courtship in the group runs through the usual cichlid repertoire of lateral displays, jaw-locking and substrate cleaning before spawning. Aggression toward conspecifics and tankmates is a defining feature: keepers of the chanchito complex consistently report that breeding pairs harry subordinates relentlessly, which in this highland, fast-water species is presumably amplified by the limited shelter of a rocky stream.
Breeding
As with mating, no spawning of Australoheros taura has been formally described, and the account here is genus-typical, drawn from the well-documented breeding of the chanchito group to which it belongs. These are open or semi-cave biparental substrate spawners: a pair selects and cleans a firm surface — a flat stone, a submerged log, a leaf, or in aquaria a clay pot — and the female lays a sheet of adhesive eggs that both parents then guard, fan and defend. Clutch sizes reported for the chanchito complex run from roughly 200 to 500 eggs, a reasonable expectation for a fish of taura's size, with both male and female sharing brood care diligently: the female tends the eggs and wrigglers while the male patrols the territory, and after hatching the free-swimming fry are guarded and shepherded by both parents in classic biparental cichlid fashion. The triggers that bring chanchitos into spawning condition are a warming after a cool period and clean, well-oxygenated water with frequent partial changes — a cycle that maps neatly onto taura's natural regime, where a cold highland winter gives way to warmer, productive spring conditions. Direct figures for this species' clutch size, egg development time and the duration of parental care remain unpublished; the numbers given here are explicitly the genus-typical range, not measurements from taura itself.
In the aquarium
Australoheros taura is rarely encountered in the hobby and, as far as the published record shows, has not yet been bred in captivity under its own name — any fish sold under that label must be treated with reasonable scepticism given the species' unresolved synonymy with Australoheros acaroides and the general obscurity of the upland Uruguay chanchitos in the trade. Husbandry here is therefore necessarily drawn from the well-documented care of the wider chanchito group, with the key correction that taura is a cool-water highland fish, not a tropical one, and must be kept accordingly. A minimum tank of around 25 US gal (roughly 35.5 in in length) is appropriate for a single pair; a larger vessel of 40–55 US gal gives the pair enough territory to establish a spawning site without forcing subordinate fish into corners. Filtration should be robust and turnover brisk — the species comes from oxygenated, fast-flowing rapids and will not thrive in stagnant or poorly aerated conditions. Strong oxygenation and a moderate current from the return are both desirable.
Water chemistry should reflect the cool, near-neutral headwater streams of the Araucárias plateau. The inferred parameters — 57–75 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderately soft to slightly hard, clear — are the target range, and the temperature band is perhaps the most important parameter to get right. A heater is usually unnecessary in a temperate or air-conditioned room, and attempting to keep taura at the 79–82 °F typical of tropical cichlid tanks would likely suppress immune function over time. Winter cooling to the low teens appears to be tolerated and may well stimulate breeding condition, as it does in the genus generally. Weekly partial water changes of 25–30 percent with well-conditioned tap water are advisable to maintain water quality and mimic the dilution effect of rainfall in a shallow highland stream.
The aquascape should prioritise open-water swimming space over planted density. A sand or fine-gravel substrate, flat stones and rounded cobbles, a few pieces of driftwood or slate propped to form overhangs, and sparse planting with cold-tolerant species such as Vallisneria or Java fern is a reasonable layout. The flat stones serve a functional purpose: when the pair spawns they will select one, clean it methodically, and deposit their eggs in a tight sheet across its surface. Deep substrate-disturbing plantings of the rooted-in-gravel kind should be avoided — a substrate-sifting cichlid will unplant them as a matter of course. Dim to moderate lighting is tolerated; a heavily planted back corner provides refuge for any non-breeding fish that need to escape the pair's territorial aggression.
Tankmate selection is where a novice is most likely to underestimate this species. Australoheros in general are emphatically not community fish; they are territorial, combative substrate-spawners that bully smaller fish even when not breeding and can be genuinely dangerous to companions when they are. For taura in particular, given the fast-water, cold-intolerant requirements, a tankmate roster of tropical tetras or soft-water Corydoras is unsuitable on chemistry grounds as well as temperament grounds. The safest approach is a species-only tank of a single pair, perhaps with a small shoal of hardy cool-water dithers — southern tetras such as Astyanax or Hyphessobrycon luetkenii that share its natural community — to serve as open-water indicators and reduce the pair's mutual aggression between spawning cycles. Other cichlids, loricariid catfishes of comparable size, or robust bottom-dwelling gobies can work in larger tanks but should be monitored closely; the pair will harry any fish they can corner once they are holding eggs or fry.
The main keeper mistakes with genus Australoheros are, in order: keeping them too warm; underestimating the aggression of a breeding pair and losing tankmates to harassment; overstocking a small tank and triggering chronic stress in subordinates; and neglecting water changes while relying on a heater to mask water-quality decline. Breeding, when it occurs, is a reward for patience rather than technique. A pair that has been conditioned on a varied diet of live or frozen invertebrates — chironomid larvae, daphnia, small earthworms, frozen bloodworm — and given a winter cool-down of a few degrees is more likely to spawn than one held at a constant artificial temperature year-round. When the pair does spawn, both parents share duties closely: the female fans and mouths the egg cluster while the male holds the territory, and after hatching the wrigglers are moved by mouth to one or more pits in the sand until they become free-swimming fry, which the pair then shepherd in a tight school around the tank. At this stage the aggression toward any perceived threat — including the keeper's hand and any remaining tankmates — is at its peak. Removing all other fish before the eggs hatch is sound practice.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Australoheros taura as Data Deficient (DD), in an assessment dated 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). Data Deficient is not a clean bill of health — it means there is too little information on the fish's range, population and threats to judge its risk of extinction — and for a species like this it is the honest verdict: taura is known from a single small upland basin, has never been the subject of a population study, and is now of uncertain validity. A fish with so restricted a documented range is, in principle, exposed to the pressures that bear on Rio Grande do Sul's plateau rivers. The upper rio das Antas and rio Jacuí drainages have been heavily developed for hydroelectric power — taura was itself collected at the impoundment of a small hydro dam — and dams fragment stream populations, alter the rapids-and-riffle habitat these fish depend on, and convert flowing reaches to still water. Catchment-scale agriculture, riparian clearance and the resulting sedimentation are the other standing pressures on highland streams of this region. None of these has been shown to threaten taura specifically, and the deeper uncertainty is taxonomic: if the recent revisions are right and taura is simply the upland form of the wider-ranging Australoheros acaroides, then the population is less isolated than its narrow type range suggests. Until that question is settled and a real survey is done, Data Deficient is the appropriate and candid label.
