Congochromis dimidiatus, the Congo dwarf cichlid, is a small, secretive cave-spawner of the central African forest waters. Barely the length of a finger, it works the leaf litter and submerged wood of shaded blackwater streams and the margins of the great Cuvette Centrale lakes, where pairs slip into hollows to brood their young. Long carried in the hobby under the name Nanochromis dimidiatus, it was moved in 2007 into the then-new genus Congochromis, the central-Congo dwarfs split off from Nanochromis by Stiassny and Schliewen. It is one of the more frequently imported members of an otherwise sparse and little-known genus.

Taxonomy & naming

The Congo dwarf cichlid was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1900 as Pelmatochromis dimidiatus, on material collected at Banghi (Bangui), on the Ubangi River in what is now the Central African Republic. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the original syntypes in the Paris museum (MNHN 1892-0120 to 0121). For most of the twentieth century the fish drifted through several West-African cichlid genera before being placed in Nanochromis, the small Congo-basin dwarfs, where it sat for decades — and where it is still found in older aquarium books, listed as Nanochromis dimidiatus. In 2007 Melanie Stiassny and Ulrich Schliewen erected the genus Congochromis (American Museum Novitates 3576) to receive a cluster of central-Congo dwarf cichlids they considered distinct from Nanochromis proper, with Congochromis squamiceps (Boulenger, 1902) as type species and dimidiatus among the included species. The two genera are separated by characters of the cephalic laterosensory (lateral-line) canal system, scalation, and dentition: Congochromis has a fully scaled nape and partly scaled chest and cheek, relatively robust unicuspid jaw teeth, a small supraneural bone, and only the last few pored scales of the upper lateral line touching the dorsal-fin base — all reversed in Nanochromis. The genus belongs to the chromidotilapiine dwarf cichlids of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. The genus today holds a handful of species (including Congochromis sabinae, Congochromis pugnatus, Congochromis squamiceps and the more recently described Congochromis rotundiceps and Congochromis wickleri); dimidiatus is the most widely distributed and the one most often seen in the aquarium trade.

Morphology

This is a true dwarf cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 2.5 in total length, and most accounts settle on roughly 2.5–3 in for the largest fish, so a mature adult is a slim, finger-sized cichlid with the elongate, fusiform build typical of the genus. The fin counts run high in the dorsal — about 17 spines and 7 soft rays, with 6 anal soft rays and 25 vertebrae. The body is fawn to greyish or olive, often with a brassy or pinkish sheen, marked by a dark longitudinal band running along the flank; the lateral line is split into a separate upper and lower section, a feature that may be echoed in the species name 'dimidiatus' (halved or divided). In breeding dress the colours intensify, and older aquarium photographs — taken under peat-stained water and warm tungsten light — show fish flushed a striking red, more saturated than typical specimens look today. Sexual dimorphism is present but moderate: as in related dwarfs, males tend to grow somewhat larger and longer-finned, while ripe females become rounder-bodied and develop a flushed, reddish or wine-coloured belly that signals spawning readiness. Reliable sexing usually depends on this combination of body shape and breeding colour rather than on a single fixed marking.

Habitat

Congochromis dimidiatus is a fish of the central African lowlands. FishBase and faunal checklists place it through the middle Congo River basin in the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including the Sangha, Likouala and Ubangi tributaries and the great forest-floor lakes of the Cuvette Centrale such as Mai-Ndombe and Tumba; it is also reported from the upper Chari in the Lake Chad basin in the Central African Republic. (Older reports from Gabon and Cameroon are now referred to other species, including Parananochromis brevirostris, so the true range is best read conservatively.) Its waters are warm, soft and acidic forest streams and lake margins — typically clear to tea-stained 'blackwater' coloured by leaf tannins, over sand and humus, among submerged wood, roots and decaying leaf litter. FishBase lists a pH of 6.0-7.0 and hardness around 5-8 dH with temperatures of about 22-25 degrees C; field and hobby sources extend the envelope somewhat softer and more acidic (pH down toward 5, into the low 20s of degrees C and up to the high 20s) in the most heavily tannin-stained habitats. As a small demersal cichlid of shallow margins, it lives in the upper metre or two of the water column rather than at depth.

Feeding

Like most chromidotilapiine dwarfs, Congochromis dimidiatus is a benthic micro-predator and opportunistic omnivore that leans carnivorous. FishBase places it around trophic level 3.2, consistent with a diet built largely on small invertebrates. In the wild it forages over and through the leaf litter, soft sediment and submerged wood of its streams, taking insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and other small benthic animals, supplemented by the organic detritus and biofilm that coat the substrate of a tannin-rich forest stream. There is no evidence that it specialises in any one prey type or in heavy sand-sifting; it is a generalist gleaner of the bottom and the structure just above it. In the community it occupies the small-invertebrate-predator niche shared by many forest-stream dwarfs, itself small enough to be prey for the larger cichlids, catfishes and other predators of the same waters.

Mating

Congochromis dimidiatus is a pair-bonding, biparental cichlid. Outside breeding it is reasonably social and can be kept as a small group, but as a pair forms it becomes territorial, claiming and defending a cave or sheltered hollow as a nest site. Courtship follows the familiar dwarf-cichlid pattern of mutual display, with the female advertising readiness through her swollen, reddened belly and the pair settling on and cleaning a chosen cavity. The bond can be intense and the fish can be intolerant of their own kind once spawning is underway — conspecifics not part of the pair may be driven off hard, which is why keepers either grow on a group so a pair can self-select or move surplus fish out once a pair has set up. The aggression is real but, given the fish's small size, it is contained: it manifests as vigorous territorial defence of a modest patch around the nest rather than the tank-wide warfare of larger cichlids.

Breeding

This is a cave-spawning, biparental cichlid: a pair selects an enclosed cavity — a hollow under wood or stone, a crevice, or in the aquarium a small cave or upturned pot — and spawns hidden inside it, the eggs attached to the cave roof or wall. The female takes the leading role in tending and fanning the clutch within the cave while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory, a division of labour typical of the chromidotilapiine dwarfs. Precise wild clutch counts for the species are not well documented; congeneric Congochromis and related Nanochromis dwarfs typically lay on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred-plus eggs, modest clutches in keeping with the fish's small size (FishBase models the genus with a fecundity near 60). After hatching, the pair guards the wrigglers in the cave and then shepherds the free-swimming fry as a tight school, the young darting back to cover at any disturbance. Hobby accounts treat captive spawning as achievable rather than difficult once the water is clean, soft and warm and a suitable cave is offered; reported triggers are the standard dwarf-cichlid recipe of soft, acidic water (pH toward 5.5-6.5), warmth in the upper 20s of degrees C, and a diet rich in live and frozen foods to bring the female into condition.

In the aquarium

Within its genus, Congochromis dimidiatus is one of the more available species and a sound choice for a small West/Central African biotope or even a nano cichlid tank, as Ted Judy noted in Tropical Fish Hobbyist's 2017 survey of cichlids for nano aquaria. A single pair can be housed in a tank of roughly 15 US gal, with more room needed if a group is grown on to let a pair form or if tankmates are added. The decor should mimic a shaded forest stream: a soft sand bottom, plenty of cover in the form of driftwood, roots, leaf litter and rockwork, and — crucially for breeding — at least one or two small caves or pots with a single defensible entrance. Subdued lighting and floating or background plants help the fish feel secure and show their best colour.

Water should be soft and acidic and clean above all. Aim for a pH in the 5.5-7.0 range (lower for breeding), low to moderate hardness, and a temperature around 24-28 degrees C; many keepers run the water over peat or with botanicals (leaf litter, alder cones) to provide the tannin-stained 'blackwater' chemistry the species evolved in. These dwarfs are sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous waste, so steady filtration without strong current, modest stocking, and regular partial water changes matter more than chasing exact numbers. Feeding is easy: a varied menu of small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops) alongside good-quality micro-pellets and flake keeps them in colour and condition.

Temperament is the main thing to plan around. Away from breeding the fish are peaceful and rather shy, and they do best with calm, similarly sized tankmates — small West African characins, small barbs or other dwarf cichlids of different appearance — and dither fish to draw them out; they should not be mixed with large, boisterous or aggressive cichlids that will bully them off their territory. The flashpoint is intraspecific: a spawning pair will turn on surplus conspecifics, so either keep a single pair or be ready to remove extra fish, and give a community tank enough broken sightlines and hiding places that subordinate fish can stay out of the way. The species is rare enough in the trade that most stock is wild-caught or close to it, which is one more reason to provide soft, well-tannined water rather than hard tap water.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses this species (under the name Nanochromis dimidiatus) as Least Concern, assessed on 14 August 2019 and published in 2020 by K. Diouf, T. Bousso, P. Lalèyè and T. Moelants for the Pan-Africa Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment. The assessment notes a wide distribution across the central African drainages and no major widespread threats, while flagging that agricultural development and associated pollution are likely causing localised declines in habitat quality; the population trend is listed as unknown. The fish carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to people. As a small, widely distributed habitat generalist it is far less exposed than narrow-range endemics, but its forest-stream and floodplain habitats sit within a Congo basin facing mounting pressure from deforestation, land conversion and pollution, and — as hobbyists note — political instability in parts of the range that periodically interrupts the wild collection on which the aquarium supply still largely depends.
