Taxonomy & naming
Congochromis robustus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Anton Lamboj in 2012, in the French journal Cybium, on the basis of five preserved specimens held at the Musée royal d'Afrique centrale in Tervuren, Belgium. The fish had been collected in 1954 by J.P. Gosse and had sat unrecognised in the museum's drawers for more than half a century before Lamboj sifted it out as a distinct, undescribed species. The holotype is a male, MRAC 135706, 2.5 in in standard length, with four male paratypes (MRAC 135707-135710). No clearing-and-staining of a specimen was possible given how little material existed, so the description rests on external counts, callipered measurements, and X-rays produced at the American Museum of Natural History.
The genus Congochromis was erected only a few years earlier, by Melanie Stiassny and Ulrich Schliewen in 2007 (American Museum Novitates 3576), to hold four small Congo-basin cichlids — three of them, Congochromis dimidiatus, Congochromis sabinae and Congochromis squamiceps, transferred out of Nanochromis, plus the newly described Congochromis pugnatus. Congochromis robustus is therefore the fifth species placed in the genus and the only one Lamboj himself added. The genus is diagnosed by a suite of anatomical features: only the last few pored scales of the upper lateral line touch the dorsal-fin base, the nape is fully scaled while chest and cheek are only partly scaled, the jaw teeth are relatively robust unicuspids that are not closely spaced, and a small supraneural bone is present. Within the family Cichlidae, Congochromis belongs to the informally recognised chromidotilapiine group of West and Central African dwarf cichlids and is most closely allied to Nanochromis. Congochromis robustus is separated from its congeners chiefly by size — its largest specimen, at 3 in SL, is more than 1 in longer than any other Congochromis — together with a greater cheek depth and snout length and a smaller eye and postorbital region. Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid. Because the material is so scant, Lamboj noted that the full distribution, the colour pattern in life, and any sexual differences remain unknown, and that other unidentifiable Congochromis specimens in the same museum collection hint at still further undescribed diversity in the Kisangani region.
Morphology
Congochromis robustus is a moderately elongate, fusiform dwarf cichlid with a steep, rounded forehead, a rounded snout, and a rounded caudal fin — the generalised body plan shared across the genus. By the standards of its small relatives it is a comparatively heavy-bodied fish, which is what the epithet records. Body depth runs about 30 to 34 percent of standard length, the head about 29 to 36 percent, and the caudal peduncle is always longer than it is deep. The fin counts are XVI–XVII spines and 7–9 soft rays in the dorsal, III spines and 5–7 soft rays in the anal, with 24–25 vertebrae. The jaws are isognathous with fleshy lips and carry three to four rows of unicuspid teeth; a few teeth at the front of the lower jaw point backward rather than outward. The scales are cycloid, the chest is nearly naked, and the upper and lower lateral lines are separated by two scale rows.
The most important point about this fish's appearance is what we do not know: the colour pattern of living specimens has never been recorded. In the long-preserved type material the body is a uniform brown — most of the pigment lost to decades in fixative — with the soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins marked by alternating rows of light and dark blotches that produce a striped patterning. There is a pale-edged dark blotch on the rear of the gill cover. Notably, the preserved fish lack the dark lengthwise band running from the eye to the tail base that is characteristic of the other Congochromis species where life colour is known; Lamboj cautioned that this absence may simply be a preservation artefact rather than a real difference. The maximum recorded size is 3 in (about 3 in) standard length. Because only males were available, nothing can be said about how the sexes differ in this species, although strong sexual dimorphism — brighter, longer-finned males and shorter, round-bellied females — is the rule throughout the related dwarf-cichlid genera.
Habitat
Congochromis robustus is known from a single locality: Yaekama, on the Congo River system just west of and downstream from the town of Yangambi, near Kisangani, at roughly 0°47'N, 24°17'E in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This places it in the central Congo basin, in the upper reaches of the great forested lowland the freshwater ecoregion scheme calls the Cuvette Centrale — the flat, swamp-fringed heart of the basin that begins below the Upper Congo Rapids and holds the largest tract of lowland rainforest in Africa. The wider region is a mosaic of the main river channel, blackwater creeks and tributaries, permanent swamps, and seasonally flooded forest, much of it stained dark and tea-coloured by tannins and humic acids and running soft and acidic. Because the species was described from old museum material with no field notes, its precise microhabitat — whether it favours stream margins, leaf litter, sandy runs, or rocky cover — was not documented, and its full geographic range is unknown; the genus as a whole is restricted to the Congo basin and its members are typically associated with shallow forest streams and quiet river waters rather than the open main channel. No in-situ water chemistry was measured for this species. By the well-documented standards of related Congo dwarf cichlids and the central basin generally, the water it inhabits is warm, soft and acidic year-round, the climate sitting almost on the Equator with little seasonal temperature swing; figures around pH 5.5–7.0 and roughly 75–82 °F are reasonable inferences from congeners and from the basin, not measurements from this fish.
Feeding
No gut contents or feeding observations exist for Congochromis robustus, so its diet is inferred from its anatomy and its relatives. The mouth carries several rows of robust unicuspid teeth and the gut and trophic estimates point to a small benthic omnivore — FishBase places its trophic level near 3.3, the value typical of a generalist invertebrate-feeder that also takes some plant and detrital material. Across the closely related Congo dwarf cichlids (Congochromis and Nanochromis), the fish are bottom-oriented omnivores that work over the substrate for small invertebrates, larvae, micro-crustaceans and organic particles, supplemented by the algae and vegetable matter that coat surfaces in their streams; keepers of congeners stress that vegetable roughage is a normal and necessary part of the diet. In its forest-stream community Congochromis robustus would function as one of many small benthic foragers picking through sand, leaf litter and biofilm rather than as a specialised predator or a dedicated herbivore.
Mating
The social and courtship behaviour of Congochromis robustus has never been observed — only preserved male specimens are known, and nothing has been published on its pairing, territoriality or sexual signalling. What can be said is drawn entirely from its close relatives. The chromidotilapiine dwarf cichlids of the Congo, including Congochromis and the sister genus Nanochromis, are pair-forming, cave-oriented breeders in which a male and female establish a bond and defend a small territory centred on a hidden spawning site. In these relatives the female is the more brightly coloured partner during breeding, advertising a swollen, vividly pigmented belly to the male, and pairs can be intensely intolerant of one another and of rivals in confined spaces. Whether Congochromis robustus shows the same female-led courtship colours is unknown, precisely because no female of the species has ever been identified. Any account of how it forms pairs or holds territory is, at present, an extrapolation from its better-known kin rather than a description of the fish itself.
Breeding
Breeding has never been documented in Congochromis robustus, in the wild or in captivity — the species is not known to have been kept alive at all, having been described from 1954 museum specimens. The reproductive biology given here is therefore the genus-typical pattern of the Congo chromidotilapiine dwarfs, not observed fact for this fish. Congochromis and its close relative Nanochromis are biparental cave spawners: a bonded pair selects a small, dark, enclosed cavity, the female deposits and tends a comparatively modest clutch of eggs on the cave ceiling or wall while sealed inside, and the male patrols and guards the surrounding territory. Clutch sizes in these dwarf cave-spawners are small — on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a couple of hundred eggs in congeners — and both parents continue to escort and defend the free-swimming fry, which graze on micro-foods and biofilm and retreat to cover when threatened, for some weeks after hatching. None of these specifics has been confirmed for Congochromis robustus; its clutch size, egg and larval development, and care behaviour are all genuinely unknown.
In the aquarium
Congochromis robustus is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish: it is known only from a handful of preserved museum specimens collected in 1954, has never (to any published record) been collected alive, exported, or kept, and its living colours are unknown. There is no husbandry experience specific to this species, and anyone who believes they are keeping it should treat the identification with strong suspicion — within the genus the species are superficially similar and notoriously hard to tell apart even in museum collections, and the more available Congochromis in the trade is Congochromis dimidiatus.
What follows is general guidance for the genus rather than a care sheet for this fish. The related Congo dwarf cichlids are small, secretive, pair-forming cave spawners that do best in a quiet, dimly lit tank with a fine sand substrate they can dig in, plenty of structure — driftwood, roots, rockwork or dense planting — and several small caves with openings barely wide enough for a fish to pass. The single most common pitfall is intraspecific aggression: an incompatible pair can end in the dominant fish harassing the other to death, so multiple hiding places and escape routes are essential, and forced pairings are not a beginner's exercise. Most of these dwarfs come from soft, acidic, tannin-stained water, and the species from the deeper interior of the Cuvette Centrale need genuinely soft, acidic conditions (low hardness, pH well below neutral) to thrive; a planted, blackwater-style setup with subdued lighting suits them. Diet is easy — they are omnivores that take sinking prepared foods, small live and frozen invertebrates, and vegetable matter, with roughage important for long-term health. Tankmates should be small, peaceful, and not prone to outcompeting a shy bottom-dweller for food. All of this describes the genus; for Congochromis robustus specifically, the honest statement is that it is a fish of the museum drawer, not the aquarium.
Conservation
Congochromis robustus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — its global status is Not Evaluated, and it carries no CITES or CMS listing. This reflects how little is known about the species rather than any judgement of security: it is recorded from a single locality, from old specimens, with no data on population size, range, or trend. A species known from one spot in the vast and undersampled central Congo basin is inherently difficult to assess, and the genus as a whole is poorly studied. The broader Cuvette Centrale remains one of the least disturbed large freshwater systems on Earth, buffered by the sheer remoteness of the central Congo rainforest, but the basin faces mounting pressures — deforestation, expanding artisanal and commercial fishing, and the long-term threat of hydropower and resource extraction along the Congo and its tributaries. None of these is documented as a specific threat to this particular cichlid. Until live specimens are found and the fish is relocated and studied in the field, its true distribution and conservation needs will remain a genuine blank.
