Congochromis squamiceps is a small, secretive dwarf cichlid of the forest streams and larger rivers of the central and upper Congo basin, the type species of a genus split off from Nanochromis in 2007. Its epithet, "scaly-head," captures the very feature that sets it apart: where the closely related Nanochromis wear a bare, scaleless nape and cheek, Congochromis carry scales over the top of the head. A reddish, cave-spawning fish of soft, acidic blackwater, it has long been a confused presence in the hobby, where most fish sold under its name turn out to be its lookalike relative Congochromis sabinae.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1902, in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, as Pseudoplesiops squamiceps — a curious original placement, since Pseudoplesiops is otherwise a genus of marine dottybacks; the name was soon recognized as a misassignment for this Congo cichlid. The type material consists of two syntypes, one in the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1902.4.4.11, ex IRSNB) and one in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (IRSNB 13), both taken from the Lindi River, a right-bank tributary of the upper Congo near Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For most of the twentieth century the fish was carried in the genus Nanochromis Pellegrin, 1904, as Nanochromis squamiceps. Peter Greenwood's 1987 analysis of the chromidotilapiine cichlids first flagged that the older Nanochromis species fell into two distinct groupings; Ad Lamboj and, independently, Ulrich Schliewen and Melanie Stiassny later formalized these as a 'nudiceps group' and a 'squamiceps group.' In 2007 Stiassny and Schliewen erected the genus Congochromis (American Museum Novitates 3576) for the squamiceps group, designating Congochromis squamiceps as the type species alongside Congochromis dimidiatus, Congochromis sabinae, and a newly described species, Congochromis pugnatus, from the vicinity of Kisangani. Congochromis is diagnosed against Nanochromis sensu stricto by its scaled nape, partly scaled cheek and chest, a reduced supraneural bone, a dark midlateral body stripe, and widely spaced, relatively robust unicuspid jaw teeth (versus the extremely fine, closely spaced teeth and naked nape of true Nanochromis), plus internal features of the cephalic laterosensory system.

Morphology

Congochromis squamiceps is a small, elongate dwarf cichlid. FishBase lists a maximum of 2.5 in total length, and aquarium experience with the genus is consistent with a modestly sexually dimorphic size: in the closely allied Congochromis sabinae males reach roughly 2.5–3 in and females 2 in, and Congochromis squamiceps is similar. The body is moderately slender with a rounded snout and a rounded caudal fin. Fin counts run to roughly 17–18 dorsal spines with 8 soft rays, 6–7 anal soft rays, and 26–27 vertebrae. Coloration is the warm reddish-brown of a blackwater chromidotilapiine, with rows of small red and pale-blue spots in the unpaired fins of mature males and reddish to orange flushing over the cheeks, throat and belly. A dark midlateral body stripe is present and, distinctively for this species, extends back into the caudal fin — a feature it shares with Congochromis dimidiatus but not with Congochromis sabinae, where the stripe stops at the tail base, or Congochromis pugnatus, which lacks the stripe entirely. The single most reliable field mark separating Congochromis squamiceps from the much more commonly traded Congochromis sabinae lies in the female: a ripe female Congochromis squamiceps carries a broad band of silvery, iridescent scales running vertically from the genital region up the flank toward the dorsal fin, whereas Congochromis sabinae shows only two or three such scales tightly around the vent. The 'scaly-head' name reflects the genus-level diagnostic — a scaled nape and partly scaled cheek, against the bare head of Nanochromis.

Habitat

The species occupies the middle to upper reaches of the Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the type series drawn from the Lindi River near Kisangani (the former Stanleyville) on the upper Congo. The Lindi catchment lies within the Upper Congo freshwater ecoregion, while the lower course and the Congo mainstream into which it drains fall within the vast, low-lying Cuvette Centrale ecoregion — the flooded-forest heart of the basin. FishBase records the species from larger rivers and lakes as well as the smaller forested tributaries typical of its genus. These are warm, soft, tannin-stained blackwaters: FishBase gives a preferred range of about 77–82 °F, pH 6.0–8.0 and hardness 5–12 °dH, but field and aquarist accounts of Congochromis habitats describe far softer and more acidic conditions, with congeners collected from streams of around 40 µS conductivity and pH as low as 4.0. The explorer-aquarist Heiko Bleher, who collected this fish and Congochromis sabinae in the early 1980s, reported them from very acidic black waters of pH 4.2–4.6 along the upper Congo (Lualaba) drainage, over fine sand among leaf litter and submerged wood. Recorded depths are shallow — the small forest streams that typify the genus run no more than one to a few metres deep.

Feeding

Congochromis species are benthic micro-omnivores, working the soft sediment, leaf litter and biofilm of slow forest streams. The diet is built mainly on organic detritus and the algal and plant matter bound up in it, supplemented by small aquatic invertebrates — chironomid (midge) larvae, micro-crustaceans and similar prey turned up while sifting the bottom. FishBase places the species at a trophic level near 3.2, consistent with a small generalist that leans herbivorous-detritivorous but readily takes live animal food. In the leaf-littered, tannin-rich streams it inhabits, this trophic role overlaps with that of many other small chromidotilapiine and characoid fishes that graze the decomposing forest floor underwater; there is no evidence the species is a specialist feeder of any kind. In aquaria it accepts fine prepared foods with a high spirulina or vegetable content alongside frozen and live bloodworm, Daphnia and Artemia.

Mating

Like its congeners, Congochromis squamiceps is a monogamous, biparental cave spawner with a female-led courtship — a pattern documented in detail for the closely related Congochromis sabinae and reasonably extended to this species given how similar the two are in form and behavior. Outside breeding the fish are non-gregarious; males are territorial and a single pair is the natural social unit in all but the largest tanks. Courtship is initiated by the female: as she comes into condition she develops brood coloration and displays to the male by bending into a 'U' shape, presenting an intensely colored belly and quivering. Receptive males respond with deepened red-to-orange pigment on the lower fore-body, and in both fish the overall body pales while the dark lateral stripe fades. The pair then selects and prepares a concealed spawning site — typically a small cave or crevice whose entrance they excavate themselves. Pairs can be volatile in confinement, and an unready or mismatched male may harass the female, but serious physical damage during ordinary pairing is not commonly reported in the genus.

Breeding

Spawning takes place inside the prepared cave, where the female deposits and fertilizes a clutch on the chamber walls or ceiling. Once the eggs are laid the division of labor is sharp: the female remains inside as the sole brood-tender, fanning and guarding the eggs, while the male is ejected from the cave and defends the surrounding territory. No published wild clutch count exists for Congochromis squamiceps specifically; in the genus, broods are the modest few-dozen to roughly hundred-egg clutches typical of small cave-spawning chromidotilapiines. Incubation is temperature-dependent but runs around three days to hatching, after which the larvae are hung from the cave roof until they become free-swimming some 8–9 days after spawning. The fry emerge large enough to take Artemia nauplii immediately and grow quickly — keepers of Congochromis sabinae report young reaching 1 in standard length by about five weeks. Parental care is well developed and continues for five to six weeks; in younger or inexperienced pairs the male may eventually turn on the female, at which point separating them is the usual remedy. Soft, essentially hardness-free water is the decisive breeding trigger: adults tolerate harder water, but successful egg and embryo development in the genus is reported only at little-to-no measurable hardness, often requiring reverse-osmosis or peat-softened water.

In the aquarium

Congochromis squamiceps is an uncommon and frequently misidentified fish in the hobby — a great deal of what is sold as 'Congochromis squamiceps' (or, historically, 'Nanochromis squamiceps') is in fact Congochromis sabinae, the more readily available and similar-looking relative. Genuine Congochromis squamiceps is kept like the rest of the genus, and the husbandry below draws on documented keeping of Congochromis sabinae and direct accounts of this species.

A single pair can be housed in a tank with a footprint of roughly 60 × 12 in (about 18 × 18 inches base), though more space is welcome and essential if any tankmates are added. The substrate should be soft silica sand, since these are bottom-oriented fish that sift and dig. The key furnishing is cover and spawning sites: clay flowerpots, coconut shells, lengths of PVC pipe and tangles of bogwood roots all work, arranged to create shaded retreats and at least one defensible cave per fish. A layer of dried leaf litter (oak, beech or Indian almond) reinforces the blackwater biotope, supports microfauna for fry, and releases the tannins these fish are adapted to. Lighting should be dim, with floating plants or hardy shade-tolerant species such as Anubias, Microsorum or Cryptocoryne to soften it. Most importantly, Congochromis demand mature, stable water and should never go into a new, uncycled tank.

Water should be warm and soft: roughly 75–81 °F, with a low pH (around 5–6, and lower still for breeding) and very low hardness. For mere maintenance the fish are adaptable to harder, more neutral water, but reproduction effectively requires soft, acidic conditions, frequently achieved with RO water re-mineralized lightly or filtered over peat. Gentle filtration — an air-driven sponge filter or a low-flow canister — suits these stream-margin fish, which dislike strong current.

The genus is peaceful by cichlid standards but non-gregarious and territorial, so a single pair per tank is the safe default. Suitable companions are small, peaceful, upper-water dither fish — West African species such as Ladigesia, small 'Barbus' and lampeye killifish, or peaceful South American tetras and small Corydoras — that occupy the open water and leave the cichlids' floor undisturbed. Other bottom-dwelling cichlids and any larger substrate competitors should be avoided. The most common keeper mistakes are buying the wrong species under this name, introducing the fish to immature water, and trying to breed them in hard water, where eggs simply fail to develop.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Congochromis squamiceps as Least Concern, in an assessment by T. Moelants (assessed 16 February 2009; published 2010). The species is widely distributed across the middle and upper Congo basin, is not targeted by fisheries, and faces no identified species-specific threat, which underpins the Least Concern listing; its population trend is recorded as unknown. It carries no CITES listing. As with much of the Congo basin's freshwater fauna, the broader pressures are habitat-scale rather than directed at this fish: deforestation and agricultural clearing of the forested headwater streams it favors, sedimentation, artisanal mining, and the general data-poverty that leaves many central-African fishes thinly monitored. None of these is documented as a present danger to Congochromis squamiceps in particular, but they form the backdrop against which a small, range-restricted-seeming forest cichlid's long-term status should be read.
