Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla jegui was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Anthony (A.) Ploeg in 1986, in a paper treating the pike cichlids of the Tocantins River of Pará, Brazil, and erecting four new species at once (Beaufortia vol. 36, no. 5, pp. 57–80). The material came from a survey run between 1980 and 1984 by Brazil's Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) to assess the ecological consequences of the then-rising Tucuruí dam, supplemented by specimens the ichthyologist Michel Jégu had collected. The holotype (INPA 857) was taken in the Rio Tocantins at Itupiranga; paratypes are held at INPA and at the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA). The species has stood as valid since, recognized by Kullander (1997, and in the 2003 Reis et al. checklist of South American freshwater fishes) and by the recent revisionary work of Varella and colleagues (2018, 2023). The genus Crenicichla — the pike cichlids — was erected by Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840 and is one of the largest cichlid genera in South America, with well over fifty described species. Ploeg's follow-up revision (1991) placed jegui's close relative C. cametana, together with C. cyclostoma, in the small-toothed 'C. reticulata' group — once split off as its own genus, Batrachops Heckel, 1840 — but assigned jegui itself to a different assemblage: the large-bodied Crenicichla allied to C. lugubris. That placement sits oddly with jegui's dentition, which extends unusually far back into the gullet, a feature otherwise confined to the reticulata/Batrachops group; its exact affinities within the genus remain unresolved. No synonyms are attached to the name.
Morphology
Crenicichla jegui shows the classic pike-cichlid build: an elongate body with a large, protrusible, tooth-studded mouth — the toolkit of a lunging ambush predator — but with a silhouette that struck the first aquarists to see live specimens as genuinely unusual: a long snout and eyes set unusually high on the head. Ploeg's series reached a maximum of 8 in (about 8 in) standard length, placing it among the medium-large congeners. Unlike the laterally compressed, side-flattened bodies of small rheophilic relatives such as C. cyclostoma and C. compressiceps, jegui's anterior body — like that of its close relative C. cametana — is dorsally compressed: flatter top-to-bottom and broader than deep, a build associated with a bottom-hugging, current-resistant lifestyle. Its most distinctive marking is a dense scatter of bluish dots roughly the size of a single scale across the flanks and head, smaller toward the dorsal surface and larger near the lateral lines, together with cheek stripes and — a trait recorded in no other described Crenicichla — double cross-bands running along the back or body axis, shared only with a closely related, still-undescribed Tocantins species. At the base of the caudal fin, above the end of the lower lateral line, sits a conspicuous ocellated (pale-ringed) spot. Its teeth extend unusually far into the gullet region for a fish this size, a dentition type otherwise confined to the small-mouthed reticulata/Batrachops group. As in most pike cichlids, the dorsal and anal fins are long-based and the body coloration is a muted olive-to-brown that the fish can intensify or pale according to mood. Sexual dimorphism in Crenicichla typically takes the form of brighter, more spangled males and rounder, often red- or orange-bellied ripe females that may carry ocelli in the dorsal fin; jegui has not been studied in detail in this respect, but the genus pattern is expected to hold.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the lower Tocantins drainage of the Amazon basin in Pará, Brazil, within the Tocantins–Araguaia freshwater ecoregion, historically recorded at Itupiranga (the type locality), Jatobal, Breu Branco, and Tucuruí. This is a rheophilic fish of the river's rapids and rocky channels — the same swift, oxygen-rich, current-swept habitat that produces the Tocantins' celebrated loricariid catfishes and its endemic Teleocichla gobies. The Rio Tocantins here is slightly acid and poor in dissolved minerals — a June field reading gave pH 6.6 and a conductivity of just 40 µS/cm (Mayland, 1988) — though the Crenicichla of this river, jegui included, tolerate considerably harder water once in captivity. Pike cichlids of this rapids guild generally shelter among rock rubble and crevices to ambush prey, but jegui is described as the least sedentary of its Tocantins relatives, willing to shift hiding places rather than defend a single fixed ambush point the way C. cametana does under its rock overhangs. Unusually for a rheophilous cichlid — many of which have reduced or non-functional swimbladders as a current adaptation — jegui retains a working swimbladder and can hold station in open water, though only with strong, rather clumsy pectoral-fin movements; functional swimbladders are in fact the norm rather than the exception across Crenicichla. No precise depth band has been published for jegui, but as a fish of shallow rocky shoals and rapids it is associated with the upper few metres of the channel rather than deep water.
Feeding
No dedicated gut-content study of Crenicichla jegui has been published, but field and aquarium observation both point to a committed piscivore. Alongside its close relative C. cametana it is reported to lead 'an extremely predatory existence' and probably feeds mainly on fish in the wild; in aquaria, both species have been watched overwhelming food fish measuring more than three-quarters of their own body length. Its jaw dentition, which extends unusually far back into the gullet compared with most Crenicichla, is consistent with subduing and swallowing sizeable prey rather than picking at small invertebrates. In practice jegui hunts as a mobile ambusher rather than a fixed sit-and-wait predator: it spends most of its time stationary, then 'paddles' toward food with laborious pectoral-fin strokes, varying its hiding place between forays rather than defending one permanent ambush point. FishBase places jegui at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with this picture of a mid-level piscivore hunting from cover among the rocks.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Crenicichla jegui has not been documented in the wild or, as far as the literature records, in aquaria — the same is true of its closely related, still-undescribed Tocantins sibling, for which no field observations exist at all. Inference must come from the wider genus, which is fairly consistent across species: pike cichlids form monogamous pairs that defend a territory centred on a spawning cave or crevice. Pair formation in captivity is notoriously fraught — males grow faster and larger, and mismatched fish often end in the harassment or death of the smaller partner — so keepers raise groups of size-matched juveniles and let bonds form naturally. Ripening females of many Crenicichla species develop a reddened or orange belly that signals spawning readiness, and a courting pair intensifies its bars and colours as the territory is established. Once paired, the genus is generally a diligent, even gentle parent despite its predatory reputation.
Breeding
Crenicichla jegui has not, to the available record, been bred in captivity, and its spawning has not been observed in the field; the account here is genus-typical and labelled as such. Pike cichlids are biparental substrate and cave spawners: adhesive eggs are laid on the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity — a rock crevice, a hollow, or in aquaria a length of PVC pipe, a flowerpot or a coconut shell — and both parents tend the brood. Clutch size in Crenicichla varies enormously with the size of the fish; for a medium-large species the figure runs to a few hundred eggs (genus-typical estimate, not measured for jegui), in contrast to the few dozen laid by the dwarf pikes. The female generally takes the lead in fanning and guarding the eggs while the male patrols the territory; after the fry become free-swimming the pair continues to shepherd them, sometimes for months, a level of extended care unusual among Neotropical predators. Wild spawning in this species would presumably be keyed to the rapids habitat and the seasonal flood cycle of the Tocantins.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla jegui is essentially an aquarium rarity. It reached the American and European trade only sporadically — riding along with the wave of loricariid catfish and pike-cichlid exports out of the Tocantins–Xingu region from the early 1990s onward, alongside its closely related, still-undescribed sibling species — and was prized as much for its scarcity as its looks; one hobbyist account from the period described it candidly as 'beautiful, albeit elusive.' There is no body of dedicated husbandry literature for the species, so the guidance here draws on field notes on wild fish and on keeping its rheophilic Tocantins congeners.
This is a fish for a large, well-filtered tank. At roughly 8 in and built like a predator, an adult needs a footprint on the order of 59 in or more; a pair or a small grow-out group needs more still. Because it comes from a slightly acid, mineral-poor rapids river (around pH 6.6 in the wild), it appreciates warm, clean, well-oxygenated water with brisk flow, though — like its Tocantins relatives — it settles readily into considerably harder tap water in the aquarium. Heavy biological filtration and large, regular water changes are essential: pike cichlids are messy carnivores and several Crenicichla are prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion when water quality slips. A rockwork aquascape with abundant caves, crevices, flat stone slabs and lengths of pipe is not optional — jegui in particular is reported to spend most of its time stationary near cover, only paddling out with laboured pectoral-fin strokes to reach food, so plentiful retreats matter for its own comfort as much as for managing aggression toward tankmates.
Feeding is straightforward in principle: a varied carnivore diet of frozen and live foods — earthworms, prawn, mussel, and good-quality sinking pellets once weaned — suits it, and this species has a documented appetite for food fish up to three-quarters its own length. Live fish are unnecessary and best avoided as a staple. Compatibility is the hard part. Like its relatives, jegui is a predator that will eat anything it can swallow and can be belligerent toward conspecifics and similar-shaped fish; tankmates should be too large to be eaten, robust, and ideally occupy different parts of the tank. Honestly, this is an expert's fish that almost no aquarist will ever encounter, and given its conservation status, any wild-collected specimen should be regarded as a fragment of a threatened endemic population rather than a casual purchase.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla jegui as Endangered (EN, criterion B2ab(v)), assessed on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio); the population trend is recorded as unknown. The criterion reflects a small, fragmented area of occupancy in continuing decline — exactly the predicament of a fish restricted to one short, rocky stretch of the lower Tocantins. The irony is sharp: the very survey that discovered and described the species, INPA's 1980–1984 inventory, was undertaken to measure the ecological toll of the Tucuruí dam, one of the oldest and largest hydropower projects in the Amazon. As late as 1990, expedition accounts could still find the species living upstream of the reservoir, in what remained of its original rapids habitat — but noted even then that the impoundment had already 'swallowed up the major part' of that range, converting flowing, rocky channel into still water. This transformation has been documented to have erased habitat for other Tocantins endemics too (the dwarf cichlid Apistogramma tucurui was likewise named for the reservoir 'which destroyed a large portion of its habitat'). With its narrow range, its dependence on a specialized current-swept biotope, and ongoing pressure from dams and altered flow regimes across the Tocantins–Araguaia basin, Crenicichla jegui is among the more genuinely imperilled cichlids of the eastern Amazon. It carries no CITES listing.
