Taxonomy & naming
Cichla piquiti was formally described by Sven O. Kullander and Efrem J. G. Ferreira in their 2006 monograph "A review of the South American cichlid genus Cichla, with descriptions of nine new species" (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17(4):289-398) — the revision that brought order to a genus that hobbyists and even fisheries biologists had been treating as a few highly variable species. The type material was collected in the rio Tocantins drainage; the species belongs to the New World subfamily Cichlinae, not to the African genera most aquarists picture when they hear "cichlid."
The name is unusually literal. "Piquiti" comes from the Tupi-Guarani word for striped, a noun in apposition rather than an eponym, and it points straight at the fish's diagnostic banding. In Brazil it is the tucunaré azul; English-speaking keepers know it as the blue or azul peacock bass. Within its native range it lives alongside a close relative, Cichla kelberi, described in the same 2006 paper — the two are easily confused as juveniles and have even been shown to hybridize where both have been introduced together (Santos et al. 2016).
The genus name Cichla derives from the Greek kichle, a word for wrasse, applied to these fishes long before their cichlid affinities were understood.
Morphology
This is a fusiform, powerfully built predator. Kullander and Ferreira diagnose Cichla piquiti partly by its high scale count — 83 to 104 scales in the longitudinal E1 row — and partly by its adult color pattern: five wide dark vertical bars below the dorsal fin (designated bars 1-3 plus the supplementary bars 1a and 2a), with bars 1a and 2a typically paler than the three primaries. Like all peacock basses it carries an ocellus, a black eye-spot ringed in pale gold or white, at the base of the caudal fin — a classic false-eye thought to misdirect attacks toward the tail.
Ground color runs grayish to greenish-brown, and breeding or excited adults flush with the blue iridescence across the flanks and fins that gives the "azul" trade fish its name. Selective breeders have pushed that blue further, and "azul" is sometimes marketed as if it were a distinct morph, but it remains ordinary Cichla piquiti.
Reported size needs care. FishBase lists a maximum of 19 in total length and 1.8 kg, drawn from field data, while the IUCN assessment cites a mean body length closer to 7.5 in. Aquarium and angling sources routinely claim 20-29 in (19.5–29 in); those upper figures are real for well-fed reservoir and captive fish but sit well above the wild averages, a gap worth keeping in mind.
Like many cichlids, mature males develop a fleshy nuchal hump on the forehead during the breeding season, the clearest external clue to sex in an otherwise similarly patterned pair.
Habitat
Cichla piquiti is a Brazilian endemic of the Tocantins-Araguaia basin, with records spanning the lower and upper rio Tocantins, the rio Araguaia, and the rio Itacaiunas, across the states of Goiás, Tocantins, Pará, Maranhão, and Mato Grosso (IUCN/ICMBio 2018). This places it firmly in the wider Amazon-region clearwater drainages — the Tocantins-Araguaia carries comparatively low sediment and tea-stained-to-clear water, warm and acidic to near-neutral year round, rather than the white silt-laden water of the main Amazon channel.
In the wild peacock basses are littoral ambush hunters, holding in the structured margins of rivers and floodplain lakes where small prey fish concentrate (Jepsen et al.; Ferraz Luiz et al. 2011). Damming has reshaped that habitat profoundly: large impoundments on the Tocantins, such as Lajeado reservoir, have converted flowing river into still, prey-rich lake, conditions in which Cichla piquiti thrives and dominates.
Beyond its native basin the species has been widely translocated. It is established as a non-native in the upper rio Paraná and the rio Paraguai, and across reservoirs in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Paraná; Santos et al. (2016) documented its arrival in the Paraíba do Sul basin at Lajes reservoir near Rio de Janeiro, alongside the long-introduced Cichla kelberi.
Feeding
Cichla piquiti is a strict piscivore — FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 4.2, near the top of its food web. A year-long study in Lajeado reservoir within the native Tocantins basin examined 270 fish and found a diet built from at least 23 food resources but overwhelmingly dominated by fish: at least 19 prey species spanning anchovies (Engraulidae), characins, curimatids, trahiras (Erythrinidae), armored catfishes, cichlids, and swamp eels, with invertebrates a minor supplement (scielo.br, Neotropical Ichthyology). It hunts by daylight, taking prey from the surface down through the water column with a fast, percussive strike.
That trophic role is exactly what makes the species so disruptive where it does not belong. In its native rivers it sits within a community that evolved around it. In stocked reservoirs it often arrives with no comparable predator and abundant naive prey — one Paraná study concluded the peacock bass there had essentially no predators or competitors and bred continuously (Ferraz Luiz et al. 2011). The literature on introduced Cichla repeatedly links their arrival to the collapse of small native fish assemblages (Pelicice & Agostinho 2008; Franco et al. 2022; Sastraprawira et al. 2020).
Mating
Peacock basses are substrate-spawning, biparental cichlids — a different reproductive world from the mouthbrooding African rift-lake species. Pairs form and defend a territory; mature males advertise their condition with a swollen nuchal hump, and a courting pair clears and cleans a flat spawning surface together before the female lays.
Reproductive timing is flexible. In the native Lajeado reservoir, immature, reproductively active, and resting fish were present throughout the year and reproductive effort did not differ significantly among periods — consistent with the small seasonal swings in temperature and hydrology of these warm reservoirs (Neotropical Ichthyology). Introduced populations take this further: continuous or near-continuous spawning is part of why Cichla piquiti establishes so explosively outside its range.
Keeper experience adds the social dimension the papers omit. Across forums, peacock basses are described as boisterous and intolerant of one another at close quarters, with hierarchies that sort out in groups but turn lethal in cramped tanks. Hobbyists repeatedly note that Cichla piquiti is comparatively even-tempered as peacock basses go — frequently recommended as a tankmate for the far more aggressive speckled peacock, Cichla temensis (MonsterFishKeepers community threads). Forming a compatible pair usually means raising a group of juveniles together and letting one bond emerge on its own.
Breeding
Cichla piquiti is a biparental substrate spawner. The female deposits adhesive eggs in clusters on a cleaned flat surface — a rock, a sunken log, or a hard patch of riverbed — and both parents then mount a sustained defense, fanning and guarding the eggs through hatching and shepherding the dense school of free-swimming fry that follows. This protracted brood care, with two adults patrolling a wad of young, is exactly the trait that lets the species colonize new water so effectively: survival per spawn is high, and warm reservoirs let pairs reproduce again and again across the year.
Captive breeding is rarely a goal of the average keeper, simply because of scale — a bonded pair needs a very large tank to claim territory and raise fry without the rest of the stock becoming targets. Where it has been bred, success follows the same recipe as the wild: a settled pair, warm water in the upper 20s Celsius, a flat spawning site, and the space to let both parents do their job. Much of the trade is hybridized, with breeders crossing Cichla species freely, so fry sold as pure Cichla piquiti should be treated with some caution.
In the aquarium
The azul is one of the more popular large predatory cichlids in the hobby, and one of the more honestly demanding. Its appeal is obvious — the blue coloration, the dramatic banding, and a feeding response that hits pellets or prey with startling force. The catch is size and water volume. Even taking the conservative wild maximum near 19 in (19 in), captive specimens commonly reach 16-24 in (15.5–23.5 in), and a single adult realistically needs a tank on the order of 6-8 ft (6–8 ft) long and around 3 ft (3 ft) front to back — roughly 350 gal (1,80 US gal) and up. Care sheets that suggest less are setting a keeper up to rehome the fish.
Water should be warm and clean: most keepers run 78-86 F (26-30 C), soft to moderately hard, and acidic to neutral, with heavy filtration and good oxygenation to handle a big carnivore's waste load and the fast, oxygen-rich rivers it comes from. Tankmates must be robust and at least half the bass's length — anything that fits in the mouth eventually goes into it. Suitable companions are other large, fast New World cichlids, big catfishes, and freshwater stingrays; timid fish are a poor match.
Two recurring honesty notes from experienced keepers: juveniles sold at a few inches grow startlingly fast, so the "it'll be fine for now" tank is outgrown in months not years; and much of the peacock bass trade is hybridized, since breeders cross species freely, so a fish sold as pure Cichla piquiti may not be.
Conservation
On its own account, Cichla piquiti is secure. The IUCN Red List, assessed by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022, rates it Least Concern with a stable population, describing the species as frequent and abundant and noting no significant threats to it. The pressures recorded are use-based rather than existential: it is targeted by sport and artisanal fisheries and collected for the ornamental trade — the latter not yet formally regulated for this species — but neither rises to a population-level risk. CITES and CMS list it as Not Evaluated.
Placed in its basin, the picture is more mixed. The Tocantins-Araguaia is a heavily dammed system, and impoundment has transformed long stretches of flowing river into reservoir. For most native fish that loss of lotic habitat is a stress; for Cichla piquiti it has been a windfall, the very condition under which it reaches its highest densities. So the honest framing is not that this fish is threatened by its rivers' decline, but that it benefits from one form of that decline while contributing to another elsewhere.
That second role is where the real conservation story sits. As an introduced predator outside the Tocantins-Araguaia, Cichla piquiti is implicated in serious harm to native fish communities. The Neotropical cichlid and invasion literature — from the Kullander & Ferreira (2006) revision that anchors the genus, through Pelicice & Agostinho (2008) on fish-fauna destruction in a Paraná reservoir, to the broader reviews of introduced Cichla (Franco et al. 2022; Sastraprawira et al. 2020) — converges on a consistent message: a Least Concern species in its homeland can be a major driver of decline where people have moved it. For Cichla piquiti, the conservation concern is less about protecting the fish than about not spreading it.
